41 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2007 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 12/10/2012

Vehicle suddenly lost power to the wheels in the middle of heavy rush hour traffic, though the vehicle was still on. After coasting into a parking lot, I tried to move the car both forward and backward and it just wouldn't go. There was no noise to indicate something had broken. After taking it to the transmission shop, I found out from the owner that the torque converter was at fault and that they saw this all the time on this generation of Ford Taurus around 60,000 to 90,000 miles driven. It cost about $3,000 to repair but luckily won't happen again because a few after market auto parts manufacturers have realized this issue exists and have made strengthened torque converters. If transmission shops have noticed this is an issue and parts manufacturers have noticed this is enough of an issue to make a profit from, then this is something Ford needs to rectify. The torque converter failing at 75,000 miles is alone unacceptable and potentially quite dangerous, though I was lucky. Please investigate.

44 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 09/10/2012

I just picked my four year old sun from daycare and the car suddenly stalled without any warning, I was on the left lane and had to steer the car to the side of the road. No forward no reverse. Neighbor said same thing happened to his Taurus and he changed the torque converter and now it drives fine, seems like a common problem. This is a disaster waiting to happen, imagine what would have happened if I was on the highway driving 60?.

46 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2007 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 08/15/2012

"check transmission" has come up three times on display over the past 2 months. I am not sure of the dates of the first 2 incidents but each time I found transmission fluid underneath the car as I drove away. I also found fluid on the engine block after the second incident. I took it to a local mechanic after the second incident, and they said my transmission was starting to go but they could not be specific on when this would happen. The last incident happened last week, and I decided to take it to the local Ford dealership. They spent time looking at my car and found the problem to be the torque converter! again, I was also told that there was no telling when the transmission will fail.

47 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2004 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 08/15/2012

I was accelerating from a stop light, when all of a sudden the engine speed increased and the car slowed down. As the car was slowing down in heavy traffic I attempted to accelerate but all that happened is the engine revved higher. I was in heavy 2 way traffic and was lucky enough to notice a turn off into a parking lot before the car came to a complete stop. I proceeded to try the car in all gears but no movement occurred. It is like it is like the car is stuck in neutral. I had to have it towed to a local garage where it was diagnosed with a known problem with these transmissions. I was told the splines inside the torque converter strip out and fails to spin the shaft that spins the fluid pump. This is a know problem and a recall was issued (11s25) for Ford freestar using the same transmission. I called Ford and was told this car does not fall under the recall even though it is the same transmission.

48 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2007 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 07/15/2012

While returning to lubbock, TX from carrollton, TX with the cruise control on the engine began racing but the car slowed down. Applied brake to turn off cruise control and coasted off the highway. The temperature was about 105 degrees outside and was 20 miles away from nearest town. Was stranded until tow truck could make it out there. Car would not engage in any gear. Shop determined that torque converter failed. Car has never towed anything.

49 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 07/10/2012

Was driving down I-74 in the quad city area at approximately 50 mph, when my 2003 Ford Taurus quit moving - just stopped while driving down the interstate! would not move in either forward or reverse directions. I was very lucky I was not hit from behind. Had it towed to my mechanic, and it was determined the pump drive splines inside the torque converter were defective. Had to replace the torque converter at a cost to me of about $2,000. My mechanic said he's seen this exact same issue in about three dozen Taurus' in his shop alone, in 2003 to 2007 models. He is wondering if all torque converters are made at same location and shipped to various plants for installation?? Taurus' built at some plants are part of the recall, but mine isn't because it wasn't built at the "recall" plant. But my vehicle had the same problem as the other torque converter recalls!.

I was driving my car to the store, came to a traffic light and accelerated and it shifted fine until I pressed the gas pedal and nothing besides high rpms. . . Also it happened with no signs or warnings and transmission wasn't slipping or acting up. . . Had it towed to a mechanic and he said it was my torque converter that ruined the splines that engage. ! something needs to be done!.

54 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 04/03/2012

Car was slowly approaching red signal at major busy traffic intersection. While car was still moving, signal turned green. But, with neither unusual sounds nor other advance warnings, the engine lost all ability to transmit power to the transmission, creating an urgent emergency situation for safely transiting the intersection as well as bringing the car to a full controlled stop out of way of considerable fast moving traffic. Then had to deal with my visually-handicapped wife and significant foodstuffs just purchased, plus tow arrangements to our Ford dealer. Ford service determined cause clearly resulted from catastrophic failure of faulty torque converter because of stripped splines. Repairs cost over $1,300 just for torque converter replacement. However, transmission could still fail suddenly from undiscovered internal damage caused by broken torque converter, requiring significant additional cost for rebuilt transmission. Now, it's like a "russian roulette" experience each time we get in the car, something two elderly seniors really are not well-equipped to deal with!.

55 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 04/01/2012

As I accelerated after stopping at a stop sign , there was a noise, the car coasted a short distance and stopped. I could not put the car in drive or reverse. I had no warning of this failure, no slippage or noises, and had I been in traffic, I would surely have been hit in the rear by any car behind me. I understand this is a common problem with the Taurus and shudder to think how many accidents may have been caused by similar failures. I am the original owner of this vehicle and have religiously followed Ford's recommendations for service. I realize this is a 2003 vehicle, but with only 52,000 miles I did not expect this failure. I received estimates up to $2600 to repair, but was told by one knowledgeable and honest mechanic, that the torque converter is usually the cause of transmission failure in a car with low mileage, dismantling proved the converter to be the problem. By rebuilding my transmission I saved a substantial sum, but this information is not easily available to consumers; leading many to spend more money than necessary to repair. Although well past any warranty, I do feel the transmission was inferior. This repair might have been covered if I were a high mileage driver.

59 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 1999 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 12/28/2011

I was going down he interstate with my 3 kids when my car stopped accelerating. It acted like it was in neutral, the engine was running and the rpm's would go up when I pressed on the gas pedal but it wouldn't accelerate anymore. I had to merge over 3 lanes of interstate traffic to get to the shoulder and luckily got to stop before we went over a bridge! I had it towed to a shop and they just called to tell me it is the torque converter and they just replaced one a few weeks ago. I looked online and this seems to be a common problem with this car.

60 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2005 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 12/01/2011

Ea09016 this recall should be expanded to include all models of car vehicle with this transmission/issue not just Mini vans. There are quite a number of complaints with the same issue. We had the same issue and during my investigation this appears to be transmission (torque converter related) not vehicle make and model related. I have filed complaints with both NHTSA and Ford only to be told (by Ford) that the recall doesn't apply because it is this decision does not apply to other types of vehicle.

Torque converter failed in driveway October 2012. Almost $1000 in repair costs. 2004 Taurus with only 35,000 miles. The only owner/driver is my retired mother. Car was always well maintained. Very fortunate the failure did not occur on the highway.

63 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 10/11/2011

My 2003 Ford Taurus has 39,464. I got in it to go to work, started it, put it in reverse and car would not move. I tried drive and nothing. I have been doing research on this problem, and find this issue is very common in the 03 Taurus, and other Ford vehicles with this transmission. I was lucky enough not to be driving when this happened, as a lot of the people I have read about. The problem being a defective torque converter. I understand that you opened an investigation in July of 2009, with aprrox. 3000 reports of this part failing. Ford needs to have a recall on these parts, before someone is killed. This is my first step in complaining about this matter, but it is not my last.

65 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2004 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 09/15/2011

I spent 4 hours at night waiting for a tow truck to arrive. All most got hit by a semi trying to get this pos off the road. That was $150 for the tow and now I need to spend more to get this 2004 Taurus running. I am a Ford fan as you can tell by my email address. I even drag race mustangs. I am thinking about going Honda for my daily driver. Problem was a improperly heat treated torque converter spline. Has left 100's if not 1000's of us stranded. Gives out with no warning. Car just stops moving. Car was down for 1 week and cost ended up being just over $1000.

67 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 09/08/2011

Driving 2003 Ford Taurus in heavy traffic on overpass champaign illinois. Rpm's soared and drivetrain completely stopped moving car forward. We coasted to safe parking. Had car towed to transmission mechanic and he stated that Ford should be ashamed of themselves and to keep the receipt of what I had paid in excess of $1200 for new torque converter. I have exact dates in September 2011 to include full receipts in storage at this time. Had I not been as skilled a driver, many could have died in such abrupt drivetrain failure, no warning!!!!!! we want a full refund for want we had to pay, to include towing. We have moved from illinois to florida, I am on disability and would appreciate some attention to such a large amount we had to pay for such a dangerous condition. Please contact me if you need additional information and copies of our receipts from the reputable mechanic. Thank you.

69 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2003 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 08/23/2011

Driving along on my way to work, on major highway (rt. 95, ewing, NJ) slightly over 65 mph speed limit and all of a sudden engine starts racing. No bang, clang or boom sounds. I reduced pressure on gas pedal to stop racing engine. Tried to press again to resume speed, but no reaction but racing engine again. Pulled over to right shoulder through 2 lanes of traffic in morning rush hour and stopped. Tried car in all gears (including reverse), only reaction was like car was in neutral, no gears worked. Called for a tow. Mechanic said it was major transmission failure (torque converter broke and a pump?) in my 2003 Ford Taurus with 102k miles. I was lucky I had enough speed to maneuver my way across the highway to the shoulder.

70 Automatic Transmission Torque Converter problem of the 2004 Ford Taurus

Failure Date: 08/22/2011

2004 Ford Taurus with approx 101k miles. Turning left at a traffic light, the transmission disengaged without warning. The engine runs fine, but the transmission will not engage in any gear. The dealer says there is zero line pressure and the pump shaft and torque converter needs to be replaced. $1700. 00 or basically a total rebuild. This is dangerous!!!.
