While driving the car noticed a clunking feeling in front end. After approx one mile saw smoke and smelled burning rubber. Turned around to get car home, and while sitting at stop light, front driver side tire exploded like a gun shot. Car was towed to Ford dealership and found "front left coil spring broke causing it to rub on tire causing burning rubber smell, smoke and tire to blow out". Repair bill is approx $925. Owner is 83 year old woman, and this is a very costly expense. Recall 04v332000 does not extend to this VIN although it is clearly the same issue.

About 2 weeks ago as I was backing out of my drive and the left front coil spring broke and punctured my tire. Now just this morning as I was driving down the road the right front coil spring broke and punctured my tire. I know there is a recall from Ford o4s17 front coil springs. However they are saying my car is not covered by the recall since my car was not originally sold in a salt belt state. Well it is in a salt belt state now and it is broke. 2 front coil springs and 2 tires. Everywhere I call the price range is around 1200 dollars. I am very upset with Ford. They sold a defective vehicle and they should be responsible for the repairs. I would rather put the 1200 dollars towards a new vehicle than waste any more money on Ford.

I have had to replace all the coil springs on my 2002 Ford Taurus. I was lucky not to be on the highway when the front one broke. I was more or less setting idle when it broke. The spring went through the tire. I have been told other people have had the same problem. Ford motor company should have to do something about it.

The front, left coil spring broke leaving a jagged edge that shredded the tires sidewall when the car was put in reverse. I do not know exactly when the spring broke, but I was driving on the freeway prior to parking the vehicle. Had this happened on the freeway, the results could have been disastrous. The tire that was shredded was a near new studded snow tire. The total cost to repair the suspension and replace the tire will be about 400 - 500 dollars.

Front passenger coil spring fractured. This was an item that was covered by recall 04m04. The fix was to install a cheap plate to prevent the coil spring from puncturing the tire when it cracks. The recall included a prevision to replace a broken spring if the vehicle was in service less than 10 years or less than 150,000. I am disappointed that the corrective action was not to fix the coil spring itself before it would break.
