Car was parked,when I went to get into car to go to work,I heard a bang! I went to inquire,I noticed a piece of broken white nylon stabilizer link,then I went to put car in reverse,and the drivers side strut spring went into tire,if I had been driving,a serious accident could have occurred! please help Taurus owners with this problem. While backing my 2003 Ford Taurus out of the garage, the front driver side tire blew up. It was a loud noise. My husband was standing in front of the car and thought I ran over something that made the tire blow. When he took the tire off he found that the spring had snapped and punctured the tire and it cannot be repaired. We feel so lucky no one was driving the car at the time. It very easily would have lost control and could have injured or killed someone. We have properly maintained the car and now I see many other Ford Taurus drivers have the same problem. Ford had a recall for 1999-2001 cars with the same problem.

Front passenger side spring broke destroying tire.

Broken front spring on 2002 Ford Taurus. Fortunately, the spring did not break on the freeway!.

2003 Ford Taurus was backing out of driveway when front driverside spring snap and punctured the tire.

I was backing out of driveway and heard a pop and air releasing from tire. While changing the tire my husband noticed that it wasn't just a normal flat but the spring had broken and pierced the tire. The car was towed and is currently with my mechanic and they are attempting to only replace both the springs and the one tire.

Driving 2002 Ford Taurus with 3 kids in car and going 55 miles an hour when the front driver's side spring popped and strut went into tire. Barely got off the road because it would not steer. Was told it was under recall but it wasn't. It was the 2001 Ford Taurus that was on recall. Had to pay $545 to get fixed. Was told by dealership that the engine etc is 2001 model but shell of car is 2002.

1) the events leading up to the failure, none, car was riding smooth, no noises, bouncing, etc. . . 2) the failure, how often it occurs, its consequences. The drivers side front strut spring broke, puncturing through the tire. This is a huge known problem with these cars. Luckily I was driving at a slow speed (30 mph) when the spring let go. However, I do take the express way to and from work and travel often. Had this happened on the expressway I most definitely would have lost control when the spring punctured through the tire. 3) what was done to correct the failure? struts, springs, and two front tires were replaced. Luckily my dad, a former mechanic, was able to do the struts and springs for me. Total cost ended up being $600.

Entering driveway, right front tire blew out and car "clunked" to ground! had difficult time to get the carjack under car. . Because it was so low, no realization at that time that springs were gone. Replaced with donut spare, while driving to repair shop next day, car started smoking and smelling like burning rubber. Smoking a lot. Both tires in front burning up. Made it to repair shop, was told both front springs were gone, and both front tires were gone. Had to replace springs and tires in front end = $516. 25. Was told I was lucky to make to to repair shop with all the smoke and burning rubber. Was also told I was lucky I wasn't driving on the highway. Was also told this happens often in 2002 Taurus model. I do not know if repair shop kept the old springs. I was too angry to ask. The tires looked like someone took a can-opener to them and sliced them wide open. Very angry.

We were at a school event and at the end of the day got in our 2003 Ford Taurus and put in gear to leave the parking lot heard a loud bang. Got out and noticed front right tire was completely flat. Got the jack and spare tire out of trunk, lifted car, loosened lugs and tried to pull off tire - wouldn't come off. Reached behind tire and fount the suspension spring was sticking in the back of the tire. Reached in further and pulled out a section of the spring that was completely broken off and tossed it on the ground. Put tire back on and had a flat bed truck come to tow to their repair shop. I am not looking forward to getting this repair bill.

The right front spring for the strut rusted out and ripped open the right front tire. Car has 70,000miles. Recall to install shield so spring can't rip tire was done for all models up to 2002. I could have been killed. On line report of problems with this car indicate numerous owners having this same problem,.

My wife and I got in the car to go home, I started the car and went to leave when we heard a loud bang and car dropped several inches. The right front spring had broken and one of the pieces punctured the tire causing it to deflate immediately. We would have been on the highway in a matter of minutes, had it happened then it could have been catastrophic. I spoke with the dealer and also contacted the manufacturer via e-mail and both basically said sorry for your luck. I know this is a common problem on these vehicles and I actually know someone personally that had the same thing occur with his 2002 Ford Taurus. I am in the process of having repaired now, I am replacing both front springs as a safety precaution and will try to keep the broken spring but there may be a core deposit involved. This defect in my opinion is potentially very serious and widespread and should be addressed by someone. Unfortunately until an entire family gets killed on the highway probably nothing will be done.

On the morning of March 1st, 2010 my wife was backing our 2002 Ford Taurus out of the garage when the tire blew. Upon inspecting the car I noticed that the coil spring was broken and contacted the tire resulting in tire failure. This is the second time that a coil spring has broken and blown a tire. The first time was in 2006. We live in franklin massachusetts. We bought the car new in 2002 from acton Ford. Ford did not offer to cover the cost of the repairs. Franklin Ford mentioned that it was a campaign and the car was not covered. My wife and I recently sold the car for parts to a Toyota dealer. We are concerned about the safety of people driving these cars that are unaware of the potential dangers. I'm thankful that my family was not driving on the highway when the tire blew. I took pictures of the tire and spring. I have the VIN number as well. Thanks for your time.

Right front spring broke and punctured the tire - spring and tire had to be replaced. They punctured after vehicle was out in motion.

My 2002 Ford Taurus had both front springs broken, 1 tire destroyed, drive axel destroyed and a stabilizer link destroyed. There is a recall for up to 2001 and wonder why this car with the same problem would not be covered. This is extremely disappointing.

Right front spring broke and blew out right front tire. Luckily, my wife was not at highway speed when it happened. We had to replace the tire,and the front right spring and strut assembly.

The car made a loud bang n front end dropped to the ground. Drivers side front suspension busted n blew out the tire, just reached home driveway. It is not fixed as I am on limited income. Also I do have the broken parts and they are not rusted at all. Also the tire was like new and is totally shot.

2002 Ford Taurus sel: driving at 40 mph, passenger's side spring broke and immediatly cut entire inside diameter of car tire. Car immediatly pulled hard to the right and was not driveable. Car was damaged as well as lawn that car swerved onto. Had to have spring and tire replaced, replaced driver side as well. Cost was over $550. 6 months later at inspection rear spring was broken and had another $450 expense. Online search shows this is a common complaint and re-call should be extended to 2002 Ford tarus.

My daughter's 2002 Ford Taurus had the front driver's side spring snap off and punctured here new tire, while back out of the driveway. I see there is a recall up to 2001 and wonder why this car, with the same problem, would not be covered. This is very disappointing.

2002 Ford Taurus sedan w/45k miles broke front left spring taking out tire. Aaa towed car to shop where other side did the same thing when they moved car. Car owned/operated by 80 year old woman. Total cost $850 by non Ford garage, as Ford claims no responsibility. I have looked around enough to know better. Something needs to be done before somebody gets killed!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Was making a turn onto a street when I noticed loud noise coming from the front of the vehicle and smell of burning rubber. Stopped and noticed front left tire was flat. After removal of tire, noticed that inside of tired had been ripped open as a result of the breaking of the front left spring that encompasses the shock.

The contact also stated that as she moved her vehicle into the driveway the suspension snapped and ripped the tires. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and contact was told that there were no related recalls or warranties. The failure mileage was 60,000.

I was pulling out of a driveway in my vehicle, and as I backed out of my parking spot I heard a popping noise. By the end of the driveway I knew there was something wrong, so I got out to check. The front left spring on my 2002 Ford Taurus had broken and sliced my tire open, causing the popping noise I had heard. As a result of this, my car was not drivable. My vehicle had to be towed to a repair facility, and it will cost $350 for a new tire, new springs, a front end alignment and labor. Had I been traveling on an expressway going 70 mph this could have been fatal.

The contact owns a 2003 Ford Taurus. While driving approximately 20 mph on normal road conditions there was a loud clanking noise and a strong rubber burning odor inside and outside of the vehicle. 2003 Ford Taurus front spring failure resulting in destruction of front tire. Left front spring catastrophically failed in driveway while driver was entering car, spring punctured left front tire resulting in instant deflation. Temperature at time of failure was approximately 25f. With 116,688 miles, last passed nh state safety inspection in June 2009 which included close inspection of front end due to tie rod replacement & subsequent wheel alignment. Car owned and operated in the salt belt states of ri, MA and nh. Carfax report in 2007 showed good maintenance history and no history of any damage to the vehicle. Cost to repair was $750 including spring replacement, front stabilizer link replacement, front end alignment, and tire replacement. Parts are not available, but contact info to repairing service person is available upon request.

Went to back out of driveway in my 2003 Ford Taurus and a loud gush of air was heard and the front left tire went flat. Removed tire and found front spring was broken and had punctured tire. Have gotten the vehicle to repair shop and am awaiting repair estimate.

Driving @ approx 30mph and heard loud pop. . . Immediately pulled over to discover front end driver side lower than rest of car. Ended up front spring cracked. Both front springs/strut assemblies replaced.
