On 12-17-2008 I drove my 2002 Ford Taurus out of my driveway. After driving approximately 300 yards I smelled rubber burning. Returned car to driveway and noticed left front to be setting much lower than normal. Car was towed to mechanic (firestone) and left front spring and strut were broken. I was told this is a common problem for Taurus. Replaced both front springs, struts, sway bar links and left front tire (spring tore into tire) plus a front end alignment. Cost = $1400. I was lucky because this car is driven mostly on the interstate at highway speeds. Something needs to be done before someone is killed or hurt!.

I was coming to a stop light when I heard a loud bang noise. I put the car in park and looked around the car but at this time saw no damage. I was a block from home so I drove home. At this point I did notice the front end was low, so I jacked the car up and saw the spring was broken. Upon breaking it also snapped in half a sway bar and damaged the tire. All I can say is I was lucky. I drive the expressway every day, if it would of happened then I could be dead or could have killed someone else or both.
Backing out of garage heard a noise, left front tire went flat. Inspection found the tire was torn from a broken front coil spring. Replaced both front coil springs and suspension sway bar links. This could have been a disaster if it would have happened while driving at highway speeds.
Drivers side spring busted in half ripping the tire apart. . . . When we went to put the spare on the coil dropped off hitting the pavement barely drove it to firestone with the coil hitting the spare tire. This happened while in the driveway when I was ready to go to work. Firestone also found the back passenger suspension coil also cracked and a bad hazard. I had to have all four suspension coils replaced along with the sway bars and a wheel alignment. I was lucky to have it bust apart in the driveway and not on the highway I was very lucky. This was a costly repair. . . . . . . Updated 02/04/09.
Front drivers side coil spring broke while driving. The spring failure resulted in a broken strut, left side drive axle, and left side sway bar link.
Drivers side coil spring fractured, causing damage to strut, sway bar linkage and tire. This failure occurred during normal driving conditions in a right hand turn at approximately 25 mph.

I drive a 2002 Ford Taurus. I was backing out of the driveway when my front-left coil spring broke, severely damaging the adjacent tire. I had to replace both front springs, the sway bar link, front tire and have the car towed to the garage. I also had to have a front end alignment after replacing the tire. The repair cost ~$800. The mechanic installed plastic guards alongside the coil springs in case they broke again so the tire wouldn't be shredded. My previous car was a 1996 Taurus and the exact same thing happened to it; luckily in both cases I was not driving at high speed on a busy roadway. I notice that Ford currently has a recall for 1999-2001 Taurus (NHTSA recall # 04v332000), but not the 2002. Anecdotally, from speaking with mechanics and the dealership, this is a chronic problem with the Taurus in general, not just the 99-01 models.
2002 Ford Taurus , found broken rear spring on passenger side of car, now have to replace both rear struts and springs along with rear sway bar links. $1000. 00 repair I don't think I should have to pay for . From I've read this is a very common problem with this car. May replace the front struts and springs also because I've found those have been breaking alot also. Spoke to Ford customer service, they said tough luck pay for it yourself.
I was driving 30mph on a Friday when the driver's side rear tire blew out. I made a service call to come and change my tire to the spare. Once I was at the repair shop to get a new tire, the mechanic showed me what had happened to cause the blow out. The rear spring coil had busted while I was driving and lacerated the tire. My car was deemed unsafe and I was without it for a full weekend because the repairs couldn't be made until Monday. Not only did I have to replace the rear spring coils, but also the struts, sway link bar, and a new tire for a grand total of $986. I also had the front spring coils replaced (because one was cracked) 13 months earlier.

Backing out of the garage heard a loud bang, stopped car, drivers side of car was almost completely laying on the ground, the drivers side coil spring had broken and pierced and flattened the front tire also the upper strut mount had stressed so much that the ball bearings had popped out. Had a heck of a time to get a jack under the car to put on the spare so we could have it towed to the shop. Replaced the both front coil springs, replaced both upper front strut mounts, replaced both front tires, front driver side sway bar end link was damaged when coil broke and car leaned. Also found the rear struts to be bad and had both rear struts and coil springs replaced. Then had to have a 4 wheel alignment done. This coil spring failure at less than 22000 miles coasted over $1,000. We are just glad that we were not driving at highway speeds when the coil spring failed!!.
2002 Ford Taurus 108,000 miles, broken front left spring 12/10/07, broken right rear spring 12/20/07, upon checking right rear, also checked left rear, broken left rear spring also, appears to have been broken for a long time. Replaced front springs and struts-$500 (labor was done by myself), replaced both rear springs ($330) labor done by myself and sway bar links on both sides, $70.
Events leading up to the failure was a approximately 100 mile round trip on the interstate traveling 65 mph, the evening prior to the incident. The failure consisted of the driver's side coil spring breaking and severly damaging the front diver's side tire and sway bar. The incident occurred while the vehicle was parked in a parking lot and not being driven. The make and model of the car was a 2002 Ford Taurus se. The dealership had to replace both front coil springs, replace the driver side sway bar, replace the tire, and realign the suspension.
When turning to the left or going over bumps sounded like items were shifting or clunking in the trunk. Everything taken out of the trunk and the noise continued. The rear suspension was looked at and found to have loose rear sway bar links. The sway bar was replaced.
The caller received recall on the front springs, but he was having a problem with the rear springs. The caller said the rear spring failed, and it put a groove in the passenger rear tire. The caller found it before the tire blew out. The caller replaced both rear springs at his own expense with another brand. Dealer said they would not replace the rear springs for free. Manufacturer has not responded to the caller on the rear springs. The sway bar bushings were replaced three times, the rear bushings were replaced twice. Updated 01/19/06.

I was driving my 2000 Ford Taurus down the highway at 70 mph with my wife and small child, on our way to church, when the passenger side spring broke and nearly pulled our car into a guard rail and off a bridge. This happened sometime in 2004 and I can still remember the exact location on hwy 59. It's a day I doubt I ever forget. I remember the mechanic telling me a front spring should never fail. He said there were no current recalls, so I was stuck with the bill. I remember being furious with Ford not only because my family nearly died, but because they wouldn't own up to something that should never happen. Here it is nearly 12 years later, and I found an invoice from 2008 for new struts and sway bars that cost me nearly $1,000. I can't help but think that bill was somehow related to what happened when my spring broke in 2004, but maybe not. Based on the number of complaints, I feel it is time for the recall to be expanded to include other Ford owners, especially since we are all dealing with the same exact issue. I have submitted a complaint to Ford 1-800-392-3673 and I believe my next step with be the ftc 1-877-382-4357. This is an obvious wrong that needs to be made right.
The anti-sway bars on my Ford Taurus ses have come loose on three separate occasions. The bars came loose at 10,000 miles, 16,000 miles, and most recently at 50,000 miles. Since the latest repair (at 50,000 miles) is now allegedly out of warranty the dealer want $140 to fix the problem again. And there is no guarantee that this problem will not continue to resurface. I argued with the dealer and the manufacturer (Ford customer relations) that this is an ongoing problem and a defect, not a new problem. The bars should not be coming loose on their own. It is important to note that on the second repair attempt (at 16,000 miles) the dealer installed a special kit that they received from Ford to fix this problem. This is evidence that the manufacturer and the dealer are aware of a generalized problem and that sway bars are coming loose on this car model (2001 Taurus ses) and perhaps on many others that share the same sway bar design. Nhtsa should investigate the safety issue involved in loose sway bars on the Ford Taurus. Nhtsa should also investigate the attempt by Ford and the Ford dealers to make customers pay for repairs that never resolve the problem. If Ford and the dealers are allowed to claim that this repair is out of warranty then all they have to do is sit and wait until the warranties expire and all defects become a customer-paid repair.
The front driver coil spring failed and cut the tire in half. The sway bar link and the speed sensor broke. Dealer indicated, nothing they could do, advised the consumer to call the manufacturer.
While getting into the vehicle, the consumer heard a loud crack, and found the left side coil spring punctured the tire. Dealer notified. The front coil spring and sway bar were replaced.

My wife was leaving work and upon setting in the car hear a load noise, on investigation by a aaa mechanic the front coil spring on the driver's side had broken and punctured the tire. The plastic linkage connecting the anti-sway bar was also broken. If the car had been moving it would have wrecked and possibly rolled. I thought this had been fixed on earlier models of the Taurus, I know there was a recall to put anti-puncture protection from broken springs.
I had to replace the front sway bar links on my 1996 Ford Taurus three times over the last five years.

Front sway bar is worn causing consumer to hear a popping noise in the front end on turns into driveway, once the sway bar was fixed the problem still persist, this was the second attempt at fixing the problem. Nlm.
Consumer had to pump brakes to stop, brake pedal went all the way to the floor. Sway bar link snapped cutting the rubber brake hose and resulted in brake failure.
