13 problems related to brake abs warning light have been reported for the 1998 Ford Windstar. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Abs dashboard light stays on vibration when braking while in motion vibration is proportional to speed.
Abs light is on.
The abs light started coming on after driving for a few minutes then it would go off when the van was turned off. Now the abs light comes on when I turn the van on & doesn't go off until I turn the key off.
Abs light comes on often when I reach speeds of 70mph only.
I have a 1998 Ford Windstar. The abs brakes are working all the time. Even in the middle of summer I can hear them engaging. I can not get them to stop chattering. After about 10 miles of city driving them finally give up and the abs light comes on and then the car stops normally.
Car starts out normally. Car sometimes suddenly has a longer braking distance than normal and braking is jerky. "trac on" engages for a few seconds and traction is jerky. After that abs light remains on and "trac off " light is flashing. It only happens occasionally. I am planning to take it to Ford to correct abs light.
The abs engages on dry pavement under normal braking conditions. The abs light did not come on. My mechanic changed two of the abs sensors to no avail. After the abs light remained on, I brought it to the Ford dealer. They changed the left front abs sensor. The abs light went out, the problem still exists under normal braking on dry pavement. I am sorry I did not leave it alone when the abs light came on as the brakes worked fine. I would rather have the abs not working than working improperly. I grew up on vehicles without abs.
My vehicle is having intermittent braking problems due to the abs/ecm failure problem. The vehicle often brakes normally but occasionally brakes jerky- stopping poorly at best. The abs light comes on intermittently as well. My mechanic thought that the abs control module would need to be replaced. I now see that this problem is widespread among Windstar vehicles, and as it is a dangerous condition, I want to know what will be done to repair these errant vehicles? in this economy, I have little money for such an expensive part! I am a very careful driver and I leave a good deal of braking distance just in case my brakes act up. At least until I can afford to fix them - or Ford recalls my car and does the right thing.
Brake lights and abs lights keep on and off I have 98 Ford Windstar.
I have complained about these 2 conditions since day one. Now that my warranty has run out, and I'm not working, they tell me I would have to pay. My abs system is tearing away at my brake pads. The vehical grinds to a stop. To me, this is a safty issue, as I have a 13 month old son. I would hate to apply my brakes, and they are not there. My abs light is on. . . . . All the time. I am on disability, and have gone to the dealer regarding this issue. As far as the rear wiperm, it goes on when I put the van in reverse. . . . . . . Weather or not the front wipers are on. . Or not.
The abs warning light remains on while driving. I had the system checked by a mechanic and was told the abs sensor was detecting a crack in a component used by the abs system. I indicated that this was the result of a manufacturing defect and not wear and tear. The costs of the repairs will exceed $500. 00 because the axle will need to be replaced. In my opinion this is a serious safety issue. Like others that have submitted similar complaints to your site, I purchased this vehicle primarily because of its safety features. I should not have to pay the costs of repairs for a manufacturing defect especially related to a safety feature.
Abs sensor ring on right front wheel cracked. Abs light comes on. Dealer contacted.
*since purchase new, one tire would go nearly flat weekly. Took it to the dealer to have it checked when they checked the window mechanism and the abs sensor light--no problem found. Took it to 3 different tire stores (2 goodyear)--no problem found. It went bald after only 18k and 2 rotations. No problem since purchasing 2 new tires. Alignment was not a problem--done @ 10k & 21k. Weather did not effect air loss, either. *drivers "auto-down" feature has never worked consistantly. Has nearly caused accidents & is very frustrating. Dealer has checked it too many times to count--same with the light on the dash coming on and not going off. I think they changed fuses once--still happens, but not as often. Would that effect safety? I don't know if the system will work properly while the light is flashing. *wiper problem is very intermittent--of course. When on slow intermittent (1 or 2) speed, will speed up on it's own to very fast & then must be turned off & back on again in order to get the correct speed set again. Temp & time run does not effect malfunction at all--happens hot or cold & after 3-5 minutes or up to an hour. Back wiper has always "chattered" when wiping--worse when cold. You change this window? it's hard to tell what you type and very hard to correct errors. ( dot number: 97s ? tire size: p215/70r15 ).
