2 Clunking Noise problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 08/12/2012

On 8/12/12 as I was driving to new york I notice that every time there is a weight transfer I heard a clunking sound on the right front, after returning to new jersey I took the vehicle to sears auto to have it check out and was told and shown the defect was with the frame work which a recall was done for in 2011. The repair that the did in 2011 to the frame was in my opinion a death trap and I would suggest that you send a inspector to inspect the repair that Ford said they did to these frame work, the strap that they put on the frame in my opinion is like putting a band aid on a third degree burn. I took the vehicle back to Ford dealer in hackensack NJ and they are giving me a hard time, my vehicle has been there from Friday and today is Saturday @ 1430 they still haven't look at it, maybe because of the color of my skin the really don't care, but I don't think safety should come down to the color of a person skin. Thanks for your help.

6 Clunking Noise problem of the 2002 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 06/10/2010

I have a Ford 2002 Windstar. While I was driving on the parkway going 45 to 55 miles per hour , I heard a clicking sound. Shortly after I got off the parkway, I drove about a half mile down the street. I smelled a burning smell, so I pulled the van over to investigate the problem. I noticed that my rear back tire was bowed inward. The tire had rubbed against the inside panel causing the tire to smoke and melt. It got really hot to the point I couldn't drive it. My rear axle is broken. I did some research on the internet and I was surprised to see the high number of people reporting the same problem that I am having about 1999-2003 Ford Windstars. I know the lord was with me and my family because this could have resulted in a very bad accident. Something needs to be done about these vans ASAP before someone is seriously hurt or killed. 7 Clunking Noise problem of the 1998 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 05/10/2010

I have replaced the rear axle now for the third time. The first time it broke in half coming into my home driveway. The second time I heard a thumping noise from the rear of the van and looked to find a crack in the axle,I replaced it yet again. This last time the same thing happened, clunking noise to find yet another crack. The van has 130,000 miles has some body rust, but no reason for something critical like this to be happening.

8 Clunking Noise problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 09/16/2009

I had been hearing a dull squeaky, clicking noise from the left rear of my van for approximately a month. I took my van to the mechanic on 8/31/09 and they told me I needed new tires, an alignment and some front end work. I told them again that the noise was coming from the back, so I wasn't sure why I needed front end work and not back. I paid $767. 00. On 9/2/09 & 9/7/09, I took the van back because I was hearing the same noise. They test drove the car and didn't hear anything. They put the van on the lift, took the tires off and they couldn't find anything. The more I drove the van, the more I heard the noise. I noticed that the van would "fish tale" or shake more whenever I went over a bump. On 9/20/09 I took my van to a different mechanic to see if they could find anything wrong. I told them that it felt like I needed an alignment, although I had just had one on 8/31/09. The mechanic showed me that the top of the left rear tire was bent inward, causing the van to lean to one side. The mechanic put the van on the lift and showed me a crack so deep that if I had gone over one big pothole, my daughters and I could have been injured. I became infuriated at the place where I took my van initially, because I thought there was no way they could have missed that crack when they changed the tires. I took my van back to the initial mechanic. When they put the car on the lift, they said that they definitely would have noticed a crack that significant if it had been there before. I went on line and was amazed at the amount of cases I found that were very similar to mine. There is no way that all of these incidences are coincidences. The total amount to have it replaced was $836. 00. I called the Ford place and the person that I spoke with said that Ford won't do a recall unless there are at least 2,000 complaints. I wonder how many have actually died in a 2001 Ford Windstar because the axle broke . Unfortunately, they didn't live long enough to write a complaint.

9 Clunking Noise problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 03/10/2009

Rear axle beam cracked in half about 1. 5 ft from driver side wheel . Heard clunking sound mechanic found crack.

10 Clunking Noise problem of the 1999 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 01/12/2009

1999 Ford Windstar - broken rear axle - van made minor clunking noises at low speed over bumps. On the highway, the van acted like the rear end was loose / tracking badly. A flashlight inspection at home showed a large open-gaped crack in the rear axle. Negative camber noticeable on driver-side rear tire. There are numerous examples on internet car forums with photographs documenting identical axle failures. Some reports mentioned total failures that led to motor vehicle accidents. The van is presently at a Ford dealer pending repair. Dealer personnel had no knowledge of this issue. I am extremely concerned for Windstar owners that may not be aware of the problem. Windstars are often used as school vehicles. I hope present Windstar owners can be notified prior to any fatality occurring.
