The contact owns a 2001 Ford Windstar. While driving in a parking lot, a clunking noise was heard. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the front coil springs fractured and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 119,000.
Heard a loud crack noise from my driveway where the vehicle was parked, found the left front struts coil spring to be broken in three pieces. I was fortunate not to be driving the vehicle at the time due to the fact the sprint would have penetrated the left front tire. I replaced the entire left front strut with a complete new strut that meets oem specifications. I was a bit leary about driving the vehicle the next day to take my wife to work, I visually inspected the right front strut coil spring and saw nothing visibly wrong with it. I was shocked to find out the right front strut spring broke while I was pulling forward later today at 151,725 miles. The broken piece is now pressing against the tire. I will now have to replace the right front strut with a new unit that meets oem specifications. I'm worried about other drivers having this issue if one breaks while driving at any speed and having the broken coil spring puncture their tire.

My wife was taking my youngest two children to school in our vehicle when smoke started pouring in through the vents of the vehicle and at the same time she lost control of the steering sliding off onto the shoulder of the road. Once my wife made sure everyone was out of the smoke filled vehicle she noticed the tire was completely shredded on the passenger front side of the vehicle. She notified me and we had the van towed to a mechanics shop where we found out that the front passenger spring had busted causing the tire to be shredded. The mechanic advised buying two new tires for the front of vehicle, he also advised buying two new springs and replacing both of them on the front. The van was fixed and we paid for the bill and tire cost out of our own pocket. The manufacturer of the vehicle informed me today that they will not compensate for any of these costs even when a recall letter 01s19/01m03 states "we will install protective shields around the front coil springs of your vehicle. These shields will prevent the possibility of tire puncture should the spring fracture. ---- motor company will also pay for any repairs directly relating to the front coil springs of your vehicle free of charge ( parts and labor) so to me this is a failure of the respected company from full filling what I see in my eyes as a obligation to the consumer. I also feel the recall should have been to replace the springs. . Not install shields which I am sure was a much cheaper route. I have all receipts that concern this matter. Thanks!.

Brought the car to a repair facility today to diagnose a recurring front end noise today and was shown by mechanic that both front coil springs are severely rusted and were sheared/broken and have been for quite some time, possibly as long as a year. He said that we were very fortunate that the springs hadn't slipped and pierced a tire; especially on the highway. Another serious concern is that the Ford dealership to which we normally bring the vehicle for service had and had failed to notice the broken springs in when most recently they replaced more front-end parts, some links, 3. 5 months ago that was part of a series of related repair work in the effort to stop the ongoing front-end clunking noise. After the noise failed to go away and after this latest repair by Ford service, we decided to get a second opinion from different auto repair facility. This latest mechanic, not a Ford facility, said that broken coil springs appear to be a common problem for the Ford taurus and Mini-vans.
The van was parked in a parking lot, I was in the vehicle at the time. A noisy metal braking sound & movement of the van, made me think I was hit by another car, but no one was around. The front left coil spring broke, in more than 1 place. I had 15 minutes before been on a busy highway in a lot of traffic, I am just glad nothing happened then. On the 1998 Ford Windstar, I know there was a recall for the same problem. The 2002 Ford Windstar has had 2 other recalls, in regards to corrosion problems, on back axle & front frame.

Popping in front end when turning or hitting bumps. The popping sound was often. Had new tires put on,and when I took it in to have front end alianed. Ford tech. Said front springs were broke. Was an est. Of $1200. 00 oni can"t afford. This was 5/20/2011. Contacted mftr about the recall that that was issued on this part 7/12/2001. Was told there was nothing they could do,because of a time limit. How can they put a time limit on safety & peoples lives?because the springs are broken, they can puncture the tires and cause an accident. Now we are without transportation. And my son is disabled and has numerous dr. Appts. Miles away. But my hands are tied. The mftr. Did advise to have another recall checked out which is the speed control because it can catch fire. When I asked why,you just told me it was unsafe to drive. He advised it could catch fire just setting in the drive not running. I was not notified of either one of these recalls by mail or other wise until I called to complain about the front coil springs. How does these billion dollar companys keep getting by with negligance. There are lots of recalls on this vihicle. Please help!.

I brought kids to school and I was pulling out. I heard a noise and my tire went flat. I had to have it towed home. My husband checked it out and found the drivers side front coil spring broke and stabbed the tire. I saw there was a recall so hopefully it is still covered because I dont have 100. 00 to fix something thats already been recalled.

While driving my 2001 Ford Windstar on m-20 near remus, mi I heard a loud boom from the front of the vehicle. I pulled off of the road to investigate and found the driver side front coil spring broken. I had to replace the spring and strut assembly on that side. I was told that I should replace the other side as well. Both front spring/strut assemblies were replaced at my personal cost.
Drove car and parked along street. When I returned around 4 hours later I opened car door and sat down in driver seat. A loud bag was heard and I thought someone threw something or shot my van. Got out and could not find anything. When I started to drive away my left front tire exploded. The next morning I found the coil spring had broken and cut the tire when I tried to drive away. Had I been driving down the road this would have caused me to lose control of the van. After researching the internet this seems to be an ongoing issue with Ford coil springs and I believe there was a recall for model years 1999-2001.

This is the second time this has happened. Two years ago, while sitting in my driveway, the front drivers side coil spring broke. It damaged the tire as well. Had to replace the tire and the whole coil spring assy. Today, while parked at a friends house, passenger side coil spring broke. This time didn't puncture the tire, but had to have it towed home. Will have to replace another coil spring assy.
The vehicle was driving normal and began to make noises in the front end. I had the vehicle inspected at a service garage and told the front coil springs are fractured.
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. While driving 30mph the front driver side of the vehicle dropped on the ground due which caused the front coil spring to puncture the driver side tire. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealer. The current and failure mileage was 76000.
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. The vehicle accelerated without warning immediately after he approached a traffic light. The front coil springs on the drivers side also broke which caused the coil springs to pierce the tire and the front end of the vehicle fell on the ground. The vehicle was towed to a local repair facility and the mechanic replaced the tires and the coil springs for over $800. The contact suspects that the failure was caused by the cruise control. The dealer didn't agree that the cruise control caused the failure. The manufacturer was notified; however, they have not responded. The failure mileage was 74,000.
Failure/braking of the front coil springs.
My 2000 Ford Windstar was sitting in my driveway when the front driver side coil spring broke. I found part of the spring on the ground covered in bright orange rust. The spring completely sheared off. I noticed that the 1995-1998 Windstar had a recall for this exact same problem (NHTSA campaign id number: 01i007000 ) I am certainly glad I wasn't driving with my 3 children!.
I own a 2001 Ford Windstar in the space of less than three weeks, both of my front coil springs have broken and gone through the front tires. Fortunately both times we were traveling at low speeds, but if this had occurred at 65 mph on the interstate, it would almost certainly have resulted in a serious accident. I check the internet for recalls on this , but didn't find any for this model year.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford Windstar. The contact stated that the front coil spring failed and punctured the tire. The vehicle was towed and the coil spring and tire were replaced at the contact's expense. The failure mileage was 116,000. Updated 10/14/08 updated 10/16/08.
I was driving my 2000 Ford Windstar on a major highway and went over a minor dip when I heard a thump in the front end. I thought I might have hit something and pulled over. There was nothing around and I looked under the van to find nothing obvious. Since then we occasionally hear a grinding noise when we hit a bump. I finally noticed that the left front coil spring snapped.
My husband was driving with my daughter leaving the driveway, the car was difficult to drive. He said it felt like the brakes were stuck or rusty, we had not driven the van in about 7 days. He continued to drive thinking the brakes would release and the car would be fine. When he realized that was not the issue and it was something more serious he immediately came home and we inspected the front drivers side tire and found the coil spring was resting on the tire and rubbing. The smell of burning rubber was apparent as he drove back in the driveway. We took of the tire and found the front drivers side coil spring had broken near the bottom. We are currently getting estimates to replace the one coil spring, our first estimate from a Ford dealer was $400 to $450, with out seeing the car, it is not drivable. We are uncertain at this time if the tire also needs to be replaced or if there is other damage we can't see. Old part will be retained by us after the vehicle is fixed.
The contact owns a 2003 Ford Windstar. After shifting from park into reverse, the front passenger side tire blew out. The vehicle was towed to the dealer and they stated that the front passenger side coil spring failed and punctured the tire. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer stated that they were not liable for the repairs and there were no recalls. The current mileage was 59,700 and failure mileage was 59,396. Updated 02/24/09. Updated 02/24/09.

My wife was driving our 1998 Ford Windstar on the highway when she heard a loud noise and scraping sound coming from the front driver side tire area. The sound stop shortly and a six inch long curved rod of metal had fallen out onto the road way. The front coil spring had cracked and a piece of it had come loose and eventual fell out under the vehicle. I was fortunate that the collapsed spring had not damaged the tire or the brakes. The vehicle is currently being serviced to replace the broken coil spring and inspection for further damage.
The contact owns a 2001 Ford Windstar. While driving 30 mph, the driver side front tire blew out. The vehicle was pulled over, but the tire was unable to be changed due to broken parts. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer stated that the coil spring failed and caused the tire to blow out. The current and failure mileages were 136,000.
Front coil springs are broken.
2002 Ford Windstar. Customer states that the vehicle collapsed in the front end. She states her old Windstar did the same thing when it had a recall. This vehicle has no recall. ** the consumer stated the front end of the vehicle just dropped down to it's tires on one side . The dealer informed the consumer that the front coil spring had broken and they also found an exploded strut bearing. The strut mounts, bearings, coil spring and stabilizer bar were all replaced.
My Ford Windstar 1999 has the front spring coil fractured causing the spring to barely touch the tire and eventually would deflate the tire. This front spring coil problem is currently the recall for Windstar 1997-98, but not 1999. The recall for 1997-98 is NHTSA recall no. 01v199/Ford recall no. 01s19. This recall should apply to 1999 too since it has the same problem.
