I was driving downtown to pick up pizza for my family, as I braked for a stop sign and came to a stop I heard a loud noise and experienced a very hard shaking from the front of the van as if I had been hit by something. After investigating and finding no visible damage o vehicle I drove home slowly. After traveling approximately a mile or so I began to smell something hot. As I began to pull over to the edge of the road I saw smoke, and then I experienced a blowout of the left front tire and the left front side of the vehicle dropped towards the ground. Prior to this event I had no problem with the vehicle and heard no noises related to this. I am now having the vehicle transported to the local Ford garage ,where they are going to replace the front springs, and assess for any other damage caused by this incident.

With no warning, the front left coil spring on my 2003 Ford Windstar snapped as we were driving. The broken spring shot into my tire causing a blowout and loss of control of the vehicle almost hitting a guard rail and then oncoming traffic. We were able to get the vehicle under control and stop it but were lucky that we were only going 35 mph at the time. If this would have happened on a highway, there would have been injuries and possibly fatalities. This caused a very dangerous situation with myself, my wife, and my four children in the vehicle at the time. This has been a recurring issue with Windstars since 1996. I had the vehicle repaired at a local repair shop. It was memorial day weekend and we needed our vehicle and, in addition, did not know what the problem was when I took it to be repaired. I phoned Ford and they told me that this was not covered and would not reimburse me for the repair. With only 66,000 miles on my vehicle, this should not have happened and caused a very dangerous situation. Now I am wondering when the other coil spring will snap. I believe that Ford should be responsible for the repair of this vehicle since this is a recurring issue and could have caused a major accident. I have retained the broken coil spring.

I have 1997 Ford Windstar. Feb. 1, 2007 I was going about 20 mph, andpassenger front spring shattered. I had to have it towed. My mechanic saud I was lucky I was not on the expressway when it happened. I had it fixed, it cost me $1036. 00. I called Ford to try and get reimbursed, and they told me that I did not have it repaired at a Ford dealer. If I had known they were bad I would have. I never received any warning at all. They did not even have me down as the registered owner. Here is the recall # 011007000, front coil spring corrosion. They said it covers from 1995-1998 Windstars. Here is my VIN. #2fmda514vbd14446. All I would like is to get some of my money back, I live on $699. A month, and for them to admit I was covered. They are being really nasty about this. I was told to call by fox 6 in milwaukee, katrina cravy consumer reporter.

- the contact has a 2001 Ford Windstar. While the vehicle was parked heard a loud bang. He looked at the front suspension and noticed that the driver's side coil spring failed. The contact took the vehicle to the dealer, where the van was being fixed. The contact called the manufacture r, and they told him that it was out of warranty, and they could not help him. The contact said that he had pictures, and will have the part to send.
: the contact stated while having a general maintenance inspection performed by a dealer, it was determined the left front coil spring was fractured and needed to be replaced. There were no previous problems with the front suspension to indicate a failure. There was a NHTSA recall, # 04v332000, regarding the front coil springs. The vehicle was not included in the recall due to the VIN. The manufacturer was alerted.

: the contact stated while backing out of a parking space at low speed, the right front coil spring fractured and punctured the tire without warning. The vehicle will be inspection by an independent repair shop.
2001 Ford Windstar coil spring broke while backing slowly out of driveway. We heard a loud "snap" from the front right tire. Upon inspection, we saw the coil spring had cracked in two pieces. Ford Windstars had a recall for 1997 and 1998 for this very problem. I believe this should be investigated. May be a recall needed here.
: the contact stated while pulling out at 7mph a snapping noise was heard from under the vehicle near the passenger side tire. The vehicle was towed to the dealership. Upon inspection the dealer determined the front coil spring needed to be replaced due to road salt corrosion. The front coil spring is currently being replaced at the dealership. 08/02/06 updated.
2000 Ford Windstar with less than 70,000 miles on it. Front right spring broke while backing the car out of garage, and it punctured the tire as well as ruined the strut shock. Dealer claims it is normal for a soaring to rust out in (6) six years. Due to our previous issues with a 1996 Windstar, we had purchased an extended maintenance contract for this vehicle, so we did not have to pay for the right hand vehicle damage. But, due to the very high probability that the left spring would rust through and fail soon, we opted to pay to have the left spring and other components fixed at the same time as we had the right side repaired. My wife's life and the safety of other drivers on the road is worth more than the cost to replace a rusted out, poor quality coil spring / design. If this spring would have broken at highway speed, my wife could have been killed due to the aggressive way the broken spring punctured the tire, actually piercing into the tire and locking it from rotation.
We own a Ford Windstar (2000) with 68000 miles, this morning as my wife was leaving for work the right front spring broke cutting through the tire side wall. If this would have happened on the highway there would have been no way to control the van or to safely stop. The spring coil was resting on the tread and the total suspension drop was so low that I had trouble getting the jack under the frame rail.
The contact owns a 1996 Ford Windstar. While the contact was driving approximately 35 mph the driver side front coil spring broke causing the front end of the vehicle to collapse. The coil spring traveled through the sidewall of the front driver side tire. The vehicle was towed to the residence. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The current and failure mileages were 169,105.

Front left leaf spring broke and dislodged from base thereby piercing front tire causing a blowout while vehicle was moving. Fortunately,we were not traveling at a high rate of speed when blowout occurred.
Both front coil springs broken.
2000 Ford Windstar. The consumer stated the front coil spring on the driver's side broke and went through the tire. The vehicle was parked when this happened. There was a slight noise in the vehicle when it was being driven. The vehicle was taken to the dealership, the coil springs on both sides and the tire had to be replaced.
This viehicle is mostly driven in the city going to the store and taking kids to and from school. The left front spring broke and is rubbing in the tire. Dealership was contacted and I was told based only on the year given that there was a recall on the springs. When the VIN number was given I was informed that VIN number was not covered. I feel that replacing both front springs and my damaged tire should be Fords responsabilty due to the fact they have shown a known history for haveing these springs brake. I was also told by the dealership that it would be rare to have a recall on a vehicle 16 years old.
The contact owns a 1999 Ford Windstar lx. The front coil spring broke in half . If contact had not stopped the vehicle it would have blown out the tire. The spring was in the tire. There was a recall on 1995-1998, but it did not cover the 1999 models. The vehicle was taken to the dealershipto replace the coil spring. The coil spring broke on the passenger's side but the dealership replaced the driver's side coil spring as well because it looked like it was going to break. The cost of repairs was $900 charged to the consumer.
Front left coil spring broke while backing out of garage, piercing inside sidewall of tire, puncturing it. Front coils replace at my expense. Old (broken) spring is in my possession. May send our for metallurgical fracture analysis to determine root cause.
The contact stated on 7- 14-05 and heard a crash underneath the car, and then heard a thump. . Pulled over, the tire was ripped open. The coil spring on the right hand passenger's side broke in half and caused the tire to blow. Out. She had to get a new coil spring and bought a new tire.
While backing slowly from a driveway, the right front coil spring spontaneously broke and collapsed onto the wheel/tire assembly. Resulted in damage to wheel, tire, strut assembly, sway bar asssembly, and brakes. The vehicle is in the shop awaiting repair w/ costs >$2,000. 00. Original parts still available. This is the second occurrence of this type to my vehicle in < 1 year. Left side failed 7/25/2004. Please reference odi id number :10086894.
Dt: the consumer states the front coil spring on his vehicle broke puncturing the tire on the left hand side. The service dealer states there are no parts available to have this repaired. There is a recall for this component, but the contacts vehicle does not fall under the recall campaign.
The owners car was parked in the driveway when she heard a loud banging/spilling. She looked underneath the van, and the front coil spring on the driver's side broke. The mileage was 60,000. There was no difference in the driving before this happened. But, had heard a squeaking noise. Vehicle was not in motion when this happened. Consumer has not corrected the failure today vehicle was parked. The owner was waiting to see if the manufacturer would offer to pay partially for repairs.
1996 Ford Windstar - front spring broke and punctured tire. Fortunately, I was just leaving my driveway. I dread to think what would have happened if I had been travelling at any speed. The spring punctured and went into my tire - I couldn't remove the tire. I contacted Ford customer service who referred me to a dealership. The car was towed and the springs were both replaced free of charge along with a new tire. However, this was a recall and I only knew about it from word of mouth. Ford should have notified me of the problem. This type of fault could cause serious injury and the public should be aware. The tow truck driver said he had seen this happen to a Ford taurus as well.
Ford winstar 1999 front coil spring broke and puctured the front tire.
1. 99 Windstar, front coil spring failure, 71,000 miles, spring fractured sitting in the driveway 2. Unable to obtain replacement parts, no estimated delivery time for backordered springs from Ford 3. No solution from Ford other than wait.
We have a 2001 Ford Windstar Mini-van. We took van in for service due to "check engine" light. Wife also noticed thumping in tire well. Egr regulator was changed for "check engine" light, but the thumping turned out to be two (2) broken front coil springs!! how does a highway driven Mini-van get two (2) broken springs? that was three (3) weeks ago and the van is still in the dealership waiting for the replacment springs which we are told are on back order. Appears to me that if these springs are on back order, there must be a pretty good demand for them. The fact that both are springs broke with highway usage indicates a possible design problem. I believe this should be investigated. May be a recall needed here.
Front coil spring broke taking out front break lines, front strut and frontaxil damage $1610. 00.
Vehicle extremely hard to stear and made loud noise. Passenger side coil spring broke and jammed against tire. Nothing has been done so far there are no coil springs available from Ford or after market supplier. Spring still on the car at a Ford dealer.
I was traveling at 25-30 mph heard a heavy clunking noise, felt the steering wheel lose control of the wheels and pulled over almost immediately and called a tow truck. We replaced the coil springs on both front wheels.
Front drivers' side coil went through the tire, deflating the tire. The whole front end came down.
Consumer stated: car was sitting still and coil spring blew out and went through left front tire and shredded the tire.
1996 Ford Windstar coil spring was found by non-Ford dealer mechanic to be broken in half and causing banging noise in front end. Ford dealer could not find problem, but both coil springs and struts were eventually replaced by non-Ford mechanic before I was notified about Ford's recall on the coil springs. Am I entitled for reimbursement by Ford for the cost of the repair bill?.
2001 Ford Windstar spring broke and tore through the tire on the vehicle. A recall was issued but not for the consumer's model of vehicle.
