Failure Date: 03/15/2011

My son-in-law and daughter we driving on hwy 421 at 50 mph. The van started shaking and they smelled rubber and heard grinding. He pulled over and the back tires were pushed in and the right back tire lost its lug nuts and tire was falling off. They removed the children from the car. It scared them to death! my son-in-law started walking to a gas station. My daughter looked under the van and saw the axle was snapped in half. A nice tow truck man stopped to help. He said, this van is on recall do you know what an axel is. . She said yes. . . . He looked under there and told her it was for sure snapped in half! I can't believe the Ford Windstar is doing this! it is very upsetting. It was towed to hersh Ford in michigan city, indiana and were given a rental and told it could take over 4 months. How am I going to fit a family of 6 into a Ford focus??.

Ford Windstar recall, front subframe lower control arm rear attaching flange and body mounts could separate from the subframe in high corrosion area. Ford claims restitution of vehicles considered unsafe to buy back vehicle at 150% of the kelley blue book private sale excellent rate. For my sel Windstar the private sale excellent rate is $4275. 150% of the value of my car is $6412. 50. Ford is offering a non-negotiable buyback of $4253. Less than the kelly blue book value of my vehicle. Ford should honor the national traffic and motot vehicle safety act, title 49 u. S. C section 13120 claiiming as such (premium offer of 150% of an average kelley blue book for model and trim level at private party, excellent condition and 12,000 miles per year. My vehicle is a 2000 Ford Windstar sel with only 125,000 miles, which is less than 12,000 per year. My complaint is that Ford is not honoring this nrmvs act and taking advantage of consumers.

47 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 02/21/2011

My 2000 Ford Windstar did not pass safety recall 11s16 thay called me to tell me it was grounded. Then they proceeded to tell me I cannot rent a vehicle because I donot have a credit card. Although I offered them my debit card which they said was not good enough. I live in n. H. Where insurance is not required. So I do not have insurance but I am not required to since iam over 21 years of age and have a good driving record. I also have lived at my address for 9 years with the same phone number. So it comes down to my car is unsafe to drive but if I want a car to get places I need to since, iam hanicapped also on a fixed income. They told me I would have to sign a waiver stating my car was unsafe to drive to get it back. They are putting me in a situation that I have no other choice but to drive my car. Or otherwise I have no car to get anywhere. They did not try to work with me at all regarding my safety driving Fords unsafe vehicle. Also I was called at the end of the day to tell me all this when I dropped my car off at 7:30 a. M. Now it looks like im not going to be able to get to any doctor appointments or grocery stores etc. Etc. My life is on hold with Ford. :( this is a very disturbing situation they have put me in. Also I would like to ask why they are sending recall letters out before they even have the parts when they arnt going to help you with another vehcile in the meantime? just to let you know I will sign there stupid wavier cause they have given me no other choice!!! to make it perfectly clear not by my choice. So I pray god will be watching over me!! thank-you.

49 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 02/16/2011

Today I was driving my 2001 Ford Windstar from yonkers NY to white plains NY when the rear axle cracked. It was a clear, dry day. This axle had cracked before - in August 2010, prior to the recall being issued. At that time, as there was no repair being offered by Ford, I had the axle welded. Welding the axle was a 'fix' reported by other Windstar owners so I was not too bothered. Until today I had no problems with the rear axle. The new crack is approximately an inch from where the first one had been. The van had to be towed to my usual mechanic. I am trying to find out if Ford has the part to fix this. My mechanic called but said they they did not have a replacement. I am not sure what I can do now - this really leaves me in a bad spot as I use my car daily. Others I know who have this same vehicle and trying to have the recalled part taken care of have been having problems because of lack of parts and/or problems getting appointments.

50 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar

51 Frame And Members problem of the 1999 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 02/09/2011

I took my van in for recalls. They supposedly fixed the axle however I think they just put stuff on it and didn't even check it. Then they found some other stuff they wanted to fix like the tie rod links. I didn't let them fix it but I took it to someone else and they found a serious crack and corrosion on my front frame. It is about to break!! they didn't tell me about this. Almost everything under my van has corrosion and if the axle is faulty because of that why isn't the other stuff under recall. Is Ford waiting for me or someone else get killed and then take care of it or is my life not important to them?.

56 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 01/25/2011

My wife's 2001 Ford Windstar has had a persistant clunk in the front passenger side. While doing some work on the vehicle this evening I discovered severe rust on the rear body mount of the front subframe. The area to the rear of the bushing is corroded through and cracked. I have good digital pictures and will provide them to you if you desire. This problem has been described repeatedly by many Windstar owners. Frankly, I find Ford's claim that this doesn't present "an unreasonable risk" infuriating. I am calling on you to recall this vehicle before someone gets killed.

57 Frame And Members problem of the 1999 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 01/24/2011

Fleet owned 1999 Ford Windstar. Vehicle has been located in the chicago area since new. Complaint was that the exhaust was loud and looked to be hanging low. The exhaust flange on the flex-pipe section rusted thin and broke off from the y-pipe. I then noticed that the passenger side rear of the subframe was completely rusted out and the subframe was hanging down about 1. 5" from where it is supposed to be. The exhaust y-pipe flange is much lower than it should normally be, which tells me that the engine/trans assembly is leaning towards the rear of the vehicle. The drivers side rear mount of the subframe is cracked where it meets the body. Also noted that on the passenger side subframe where the engine mount attaches and the subframe rear crossmember meet, the subframe is almost completely rusted through. I can foresee this problem eventually causing the axles to remove themselves from the trans, wire harnesses getting damaged, lower control arms becoming detatched from the subframe, exhaust damage, steering rack damage, wheel alignment issues, etc. The only repair that I can see making this vehicle safe to drive again would be subframe replacement.

58 Frame And Members problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar

62 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 01/12/2011

This complaint is related to your NHTSA action # ea10007 January 12, 2011, my wife was driving our Ford Windstar on hwy 155 north of saint germain, WI. Without warning the front end right wheel dislodged and the car swerved violently all over the highway. Luckily, no other cars were near. The roadside ditches where the failure occurred are more than 12' deep, so there could also have been injuries and or damage if she had not reacted as quickly and forcibly as she did. She was able to wrestle the car onto the shoulder and call for help. Upon towing to the nearest Ford dealership, it has been determined that the undercarriage failed, the front right axle dislodged from the transmission, and various other damage can also have occurred. Updated ivoq 02/16/11.

63 Frame And Members problem of the 1999 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 01/09/2011

The right lower control arm pulled loose from the subframe crossmember due to excessive rust. The leadup to the inceident was completely unexpected. The control arm pulled loose at 70 mph and caused the Windstar to veer back and forth using 4 lanes of traffic to come to a stop. Lucky for me was that there was no traffic in my imediate area and no other cars were involved.

64 Frame And Members problem of the 2000 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 01/07/2011

The failure mileage was approximately 140,000.

65 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 01/04/2011

My 2001 Windstar failed the yearly state saftey inspection because of frame rotting at the passenger side rear frame mount. I trust my mechanic and he strongly suggested that I do not drive this car ! he would not put a sticker on the car. His estimate for repair was over $2000 .

66 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 01/04/2011

While driving on a local road at approximately 35 mph, my 2001 Ford Windstar broke down and was immobile. After being towed and inspected by a repair service, the cause was determined to be the front subframe. The front passenger side tire was facing right while all others were forward facing. This easily could have resulted in serious injury or a crash if other vehicles had been near or had the vehicle been traveling at higher speed.

67 Frame And Members problem of the 2003 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 01/02/2011

Brought my 2003 Ford Windstar in to my local Ford dealership because it failed state safety inspection as the abs light was on. Ford took the vehicle and inspected it based upon a recall on the rear axle and said that it failed. They provided me with a rental. The next day, I called the dealership and asked them to check the abs right away anyway as if they were able to repair the axle issue soon, I would still not be able to drive the vehicle off their lot as it wasn't safe. At the time, the service manager agreed. I waited for a call back and received none. A month later, I placed another call and was told that there was going to be another recall for the front subframe and that Ford was going to buyback vehicles that were already in with both issues so I should wait for the recall to become officially in progress. I waited another couple of weeks and when I heard nothing, I called back and inquired about the status. I was told that virtually no cars were failing the inspection for the front subframe, so I would have to wait until an axle was available for me to get my van back. I have still not heard the cost to repair my abs issue, so my question is, am I going to hear anything about this before they repair my axle, as I am going to be past the 60 days that I am allowed to repair the abs issue before massachusetts has the right to revoke my registration for not re-inspecting my vehicle. I am going to call my insurance company tomorrow to find out what I should be doing next, but in the meantime, I am left unknowing what is going to happen. As it stands, I will not have a safe vehicle to drive once they repair the axle as they are unwilling to do any work on the vehicle until they repair the axle.

68 Frame And Members problem of the 2001 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 12/31/2010

I would like to report a reoccurring problem that I have had with my Ford Windstar 2 years ago while pulling out of a parking space the front right control arm pulled free from the sub-frame on my Windstar. Fortunately no one was hurt. I had the sub-frame replaced with another used frame by a local mechanic. Last Friday I took the van to the local Ford dealer to take care of the most recent recall on the rear axles. The dealership called me at home and told me the front sub-frame was severely rotted and the right control arm was barley holding on to the frame. They deemed the vehicle unsafe to drive. I have pulled the vehicle from the road until I can get it fixed. I feel fortunate that it did not break at highway speed with my wife and three kids in the van.

69 Frame And Members problem of the 1999 Ford Windstar

Failure Date: 12/29/2010

I took the winstar to have the two recalls repaired and when the basil Ford service department was done with that they informed me that my van was undriveable because the right front sub frame was cracked. They said it would cost $1600. To repair it. With all the rust on the doors and door sill I find it rediculous to spend that amount when the rust would bring down the value of the van to almost nothing. This is the fifth Ford I have had and you would think I would have learned about the rust factor. Getting back to the sub frame I phoned the number listed on the Ford web page but after about five phone calls I decided to call the corporate office. I was directed to a voice mail. . . Gave my information and was told we would hear from them in so many business days. It didn't happen. Then we recieved a form to fill out about how well we thought our phone inquiry went. We had a letter about the axel recall and this web site is listed so I thought it was time.
