Overdrive light begins flashing and overdrive shifts out ogf gear. This problem has happened on two consecutive Ford Windstars I've owned. A 1999 and 2002. Both problems occurred at the 120,000 mile mark. In both cases the transmission was diagnose as needing replacement. In both cases the flashing o/d light came on again after the transmissions were replaced at great expense. This time I replaced the trans in the 2002 with a trans out of a 2005 with 52,000 miles on it. Now 2 months later the light is flashing again but the overdrive seems to be functioning properly. In the case of the 1999 I had to replace the abs control module after replacing the trans which I believed might have fixed the problem, but I don't know for sure because I dumped the vehicle quickly afterward. In this case I'm going to trade in the 2002 on a Chrysler pacifica.

2003 Ford Windstar, 50,000 miles, and the transmission needs to be replaced. Even though proper maintenance done. Vehicle shifts out of gear, and reverse is not hit or miss. Search on the internet reveals this vehicle is worthless and a rebuild is recommended over a used one since your only going to get other peoples problems. A new transmission from Ford is 3000$ the rebuild will cost $2000.
In fall of 2005 my broth-in-law had his transmission replaced twice on a 1999 Ford Windstar minivan. Fee from dealership (Ford in williamsburg, va) was in excess of $2500 each replacement. In January 2006 my own 2000 Windstar van's transmission failed in an intersection in traffic. Vehicle was towed to Ford dealership in wmbg and diagnosed as transmission failure, fee $2700. For a second opinion, vehicle was towed to mr. Transmission in hampton, transmission dissected and laid out for analysis. Metal fragments had destroyed the transmission. I was told this was a frequent occurrence with Ford Windstars. In early models, a metal tube for the coolant doesn't have any support and breaks or tears from vibration. In later models this tube has a support to prevent that. The Ford service people, when confronted, said "transmissions can fail, you never know. " we asked "is this common in Windstars?" answer "no. " no mention of prior knowledge, no mention of recall. When one considers 2 Windstars, years 1999 and 2000, 3 destroyed transmissions between them, and denial on the part of the manufacturer, this warrants investigation. It is negligent to not make the public aware of the possibility of slipping out of gear in traffic and not institute a recall to replace transmissions on early models. It is criminal to charge owners $2500+ for a manufacturing design flaw. The fact that later models have the issue corrected implies prior knowledge. This should be investigated.

The minivan is equipped with a button on the gear shift. This button enables you to shift out of overdrive when you do not want the vehicle to be in overdrive mode. About this time the fuse in the fuse box would blow. Replaced the fuse a number of times but the problem is still there. The fuse may last for 5 to 10 miles and then it would blow. Tried a larger amp fuse but it would also blow. Transmission will leave the overdrive only if you accelerate going up a hill.

Vehicle would not shift out of first gear. Had to replace transmission. Dealer contacted.
While traveling approximately 50 mph transmission would jump out of gear into neutral intermittently. A private mechanic diagnosed that a gear broke loose and destroyed interior components of transmission. Please provide any additional information / attachments.
While driving at 40 mph car shifted out of gear and the transmission would not reingage beyond 1st. Limped home on highway with flashers. Dealer declared 'internal problem' and $2,400 transmission replaced w/o any factory reimbursement. Customer service rep. At Ford contacted and I was told there was nothing they could do about this specific problem with Windstar transmissions (other than collect my money) and there were no recalls or tsbs on the transmission. The dealer reported that the transmission fluid looked ok so this was not traced to the failure. The transmission was returned for 'core' credit intact: no reason for the failure was determined.
Transmisson will not shift out of first gear. Dealer notified, and waiting on manufacturer who has a hold on all Windstar transmission until further notice. Please provide any further notice.
Transmission jumped out of gear.
Auotmatic transmission slips out of gear into a neutral after you come to a stop. You then have to put it in a low gear to get in back in drive. This can be a hazard in traffic. The power steerinng pump makes a loud grinding noise much louder than the normal sound the pump makes, the dealer has said previously that it is normal for the Windstar. The passenger side power window has stopped working, unk reason has not been looked at. These problems are occurring in other Windstars of the same year .
