I have 2 ongoing issues, 1st is the car will be driving fine then get a check engine light and have a code for cylinder misfire. Car was at dealer multiple times with issue and could not duplicate while under extended warranty. Mysteriously the intake has to come apart and be reworked since the warranty expired, and still has same issues. The 2nd and more concerning issue is the power steering. Initially took in and told the rack and pinion needs changed. Still had same issue and told power steering now needs to be changed, so we did. Sound and still stiff after 2 racks and 2 pumps. Mechanic refused to work it again. Took to dealer yesterday. Says needs new power steering pump. So dealer took for a test drive and said it's still doing it and needs another rack and pinion. At what point is GMC that has a known safety issue with steering going to fix this issue. I can't keep throwing money at this thing and I can't feel unsafe in it. What can I do?.

My car whined and groaned when you turn the wheel so I took it in and had the power steering pump replaced and now my wheel. Wont turn at all . Upon reading many complaints with this vehicle found it may be the rack and pinion I am. Going to have to tow to a different mechanic to see if the new problem is covered under warranty.

2016 GMC Acadia slt-1, 58,000 miles. Total loss of power steering backing out of a parking space with no prior symptoms. The car would barely turn at low speeds and made a loud howling noise when wheel was turned. I took the vehicle to the dealer and they tell me I need the power steering pump, rack and pinion and all new hoses. No prior wrecks or issues. This is ridiculous to be hit with a $4100 bill with no explanation of why this could happen.

The vehicle has been looked over by many mechanical professionals. At slow rates of speed, intermittently the steering will stiffen and lock up making it very scary when driving. We have been told over and over that rack n pinion and pump are fine. After researching, this looks like a typical issue. Is there anything that gm can do for this?.

While driving encountering a dangerous loss of power steering intermittently especially during braking (low engine revs). Steering appears to lock and bind. Dealer states failure of powersteering pump and rack and pinion gear. This is 2nd time. Power steering first failed at 36,000 miles requiring full rack and pump replacement under warranty. Now, at 100,000 miles pump fails again and requires pump, seal and full rack and gear replacement. Car is not safe. Service bulletin #14329a acknowledges problem with pump and covers pump and gear *seal* but not rack and pinion gear. Rack failure should be covered under recall.
Our vehicle only has 86k miles and the rack and pinion is leaking heavily. The dealer stated that this is a known issue, but it is out of warranty. Sometimes, the power steering cuts out and it is very difficult to move the steering wheel. We believe that this imposes serious risk while driving and the problem can happen at any time. There is no repeatable scenario to demonstrate the failure. It is random. The front engine cover also leaks oil heavily. The dealer also stated this is a known issue. This could result in rapid engine oil loss and engine failure while driving. I took the vehicle to the dealer yesterday for inspection. Unfortunately no pictures were taken, but their two technicians inspected the vehicle and agreed on the known issues. The service advisor also agreed on the known issues. I inquired about gm helping with these known issues, but the dealer stated that their district aftersales manager was not kind or helpful and would revert to general motor's online goodwill calculator. He accessed the online system which determined my vehicle was out of warranty and/or coverage and that there was no goodwill available to use for my vehicle. We're not looking for goodwill, but rather for gm to repair these high risk product failures. Since these components wear with use, not time, we feel that with our low usage, these components should not have failed.

Was driving straight and attempted to make a right hand turn and could not turn the car. Almost got in an accident. Third time this has happened. No previous accidents, 90,000 miles. Repairs included: new stering pump, new hoses and new rack and pinion gear.
Loss of steering assist at low rpm. Result: hard to turn on either direction. When parking, reving up the engine helps steering assist return to "normal". Problem is at it worst after driving for 20 minutes or more. Near death experience: I was coming of the freeway and attempting to make a turn (at slower speed) when the steering wheel "felt locked and I nearly ended up driving over an busy overpass. It was only due to luck, very hard braking and hard manual steering that I was able to get the car to turn a little and stop before driving over overpass. Steering fluid level is normal. I am very converned as somoene could get hurt when I lose the ability to steer the vehicle (no warning lights and engine running as normal). I can't allow my wife to drive this death trap. Dealer recommended new stering pump new hoses and new rack and pinion gear. Car has only 96,000 never been in accidents. Over $4,000 in reppairs!.
Power steering gets hard to steer while turning, pulling in to parking spaces, going around curves. Being told I have to replace the rack and pinion and then gm will replace the pump. Middle row middle seatbelt is locked won't pull out. Had to replace all front suspension. This vehicle is poorly made.

Tl the contact owns a 2007 GMC Acadia. While driving, the contact heard a loud noise when turning the vehicle. The stability rack and traction control indicators illuminated before and during the failure. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where it was diagnosed that the rack and pinion failed. The vehicle was repaired. The dealer was not contacted. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 111,383.
The vehicle has less than 55,000 miles and recently while getting off the highway, in cold conditions, it became very difficult to turn the steering and then after about 500 feet of driving there was a grinding noise. After having the vehicle towed, it was determined that both the power steering cooling pump, the power steering pump and the actual rack and pinion steering all needed to be replaced as a significant cost as they were seized up and would have posed a serious driving risk if they had seized while driving. There are noted TSB on these items as well.
I'm having the same issue that everyone is complaining about where I lose power when at low speed trying to enter or exiting a parking space. The steering wheel becomes very stiff. GMC recall was for steering pump but is making customers replace rack and pinion stating its unrelated and if not replaced it will not honor the 10 year warranty on the steering pump replacement.
Rack and pinion needs to be replaced. When calling around to dealerships, they said that its a common problem with Acadias. When a rack and pinion needs to be replaced, it causes the steering wheel to lock up when turning. It is a dangerous problem. Replacement costs is around $1,800.
The contact owns a 2008 GMC Acadia. While performing an oil change on the vehicle, the independent mechanic noticed that the rack and pinion was leaking and needed to be replaced. There were no warning indicators illuminated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 129,000.

I am experiencing steer loss when at low speeds which involve turning street corners, pulling and out of parking lot spaces and any other time a 90 degree turn is required (most often in any city travel). The steering becomes so tight in these circumstances that wider turns are required when steering wheel won't engage to assist. At street corners, this means wider turns where attention to oncoming traffic is dangerous. In parking lots, the ability to pull into a space is impossible without 3-4 point turns to move forward and backwards. This too can block oncoming vehicles and most importantly, avoid contact with those parked in the adjacent spaces. The wheel can be impossible to turn and freeze on you when you are not applying the gas and you don't want to apply the gas when your turn is already too wide for a street corner turn and traffic is coming your way or you are trying to avoid parked cars next you when pulling in or out of parking spaces. Both straight on parking and vertical parking is nearly impossible to maneuver in. My vehicle has 119,200 miles. I noticed my steering getting stiffer on rare occasions at 88,000 miles but I was always able to make my turns properly. I do a lot of highway travel now so my miles have added up quickly in the last year and a half. This is not the first major problem with this vehicle. My first was at 67,000 when the entire transmission went out. Prior to that, the entire back axle had to be replaced (under warranty). Since then, the throttle body at 84,000 miles. Recalls of several gm vehicles have been made for the power steering and the rack and pinion but the 2008 Acadia is not listed. These steering issues are not "one-off" situations per vehicle but rather entire populations of owners of this vehicle with a common problem - power steering not working properly at several intervals of mileage on the vehicle!.
Vehicles 75,000 miles on it. While driving through a parking garage, my power steering went out, very suddenly, making driving very difficult and very dangerous. After bringing my vehicle to a mechanic, I was told I needed to replace both the steering pump and rack and pinion. After some reading, it appears as though this is a recurring issue for the Acadia that hasn't been addressed for this model year. .
Squeaking/whining in steering column. Dealership diagnosis, power steering gear leaking (rack & pinion) and must be replaced. Cost, $1432. 00 plus tax. Vehicle has only 17948 miles. Not covered by warranty or manuf. Recall. Out of warranty due to age or time. Power steering could fail as it has in other vehicles. Definitely a safety issue. GMC should stand behind their vehicles as this is a design or engineering flaw. This condition is noticed when ever the steering wheel is turned in either direction.
The contact owns a 2010 GMC Acadia. The contact had not experienced any failures prior to the vehicle receiving service for a manufacturer recall for the steering provided by an authorized dealer (christopher Chevrolet Buick, inc. , 1111 wicker st, ticonderoga, NY 12883, (518) 585-2842). The dealer took longer than a week to repair the vehicle. The contact was uncertain if the remedy prevented a failure or caused a failure. In addition, the dealer mentioned that the rack and pinion needed to be replaced due to a leak. The contact stated that there had not been any leaks since owning the vehicle. The contact was informed that the recall repair was completed. The manufacturer was notified and provided no solution concerning the remedy and dealer repairs. The VIN and NHTSA campaign number were unavailable. The approximate failure mileage was 78,000.
Water pump failed in the freeway prematurely, brake cylinder failed prematurely, steering, rack and pinion and power steering pump failed @116k, transmission failed @ 116. No means of transportation with 3 kids.
I noticed that when driving on an expressway and would attempt to pass a slower moving vehicle, as I would move into the passing lane and attempt to accelerate, the car would hesitate for a few seconds, lose speed, then suddenly downshift and accelerate at an unexpected rate. I also noticed that the car would unexpectedly accelerate or decelerate under normal driving conditions. I bought the vehicle to the dealer for repair, they responded that they could find nothing wrong, but the what I was experiencing was characteristic of the 6-speed transmission on the vehicle. The problem continued and I found it dangerous. I returned the vehicle and the dealer's remedy was to "reset the transmission computer. " during this time, I also noticed that the "service stabilitrac and traction control" warning would come on. It dosen't matter if your driving or idle or in park these warnings and problems still exist. The dealer fixed one wheel sensor but the problem still occurs. The service airbag warning lights still comes on there was a recall for that I had it fixed but warning still comes on. This vehicle has had so many recalls automatic lift gate, air bag warnings, power steering pump and hose. The rack & pinion will need to be replaced in the vehicles short life span, all of the suspension parts bushings will have to be replaced at some point so this means control arm, sway bar sway, sway bar links toe links of course with these issues you will have to replace struts and shocks, etc. . . How can government/general motors sell a vehicle this expensive and have so many problems these vehicles are unsafe to drive something needs to be done about this before someone gets seriously hurt. My 08 GMC Acadia is pure garbage someone needs to be held accountable because these vehicles have major mechanical and electrical issues, recalls and are unsafe to be driving.
When making turns with the car the steering completely gave away and was very hard to maneuver a turn correctly. Was taken to the garage who informed us that the rack and pinion was bad and the power steering column. Finding out that this is a issue with almost all GMC Acadia's was very upsetting to learn. If this is a issue with that many of them why has there not yet been a recall on this. Since there is no recall I am stuck paying well over $1000. 00 to fix so that I can hopefully not have the same issue again. GMC needs to do a buy back recall on these models as they are not safe. Thankful that I was alone at the time that this happened however could have very easily caused a major accident had I not noticed when I was sopped to make a turn. How many people need to be killed or hurt before they will fix.
Having steering problems with my GMC Acadia. Vehicle has appox. 75k miles and I have had several incidents of where it was hard to steer my vehicle. I took to the GMC dealership service dept. And it's the same issues everyone else is having with this make & model vehile. Rack & pinion is leaking & I need a new power steerling pump. There is clearly a defect with this GMC make and model and the customers should have to bare the cost of these reparis. I also noticed this occurs after the warranty ends too. Cost of repairs & labor - around $2,200. Of course the repair guy also noticed 3 other things that needs to be repaired too. The cost of those recommended reparis cost $1,600.
An intermittent steering issue developed whereby steering input would become restricted and prevent the driver from adding or subtracting steering. The issue presents during turning and cornering and resulted in numerous hazardous situations and one serious near miss. Upon inspection by a mechanic, I was advised that the entire rack and pinion assembly would need to be replaced. It is not clear whether the rack and pinion were inherently defective, or the consequential damage of other steering defects which is very concerning. Upon further review, I have found that this model year along with several others have been plagued with defective steering issues. Given the apparent incidence rate and the high risk nature of the issue, I am surprised and disappointed this has not culminated in a recall.
Rack and pinion seizes up while turning. Gm knows about this issue. Happens on most of the Acadias.
Brought it to the GMC dealer to replace the power steering pump which was on recall notice only if there were problems. Loss of power steering at low speed so I took it to dealer. As a result, pump was replaced as well as rack and pinion. Pump covered, rack and pinion not, $1700. The day after I picked up the car, the transmission failed. As I got on the highway, motor revved but transmission did not engage. Was able to make it into the breakdown lane. Had to have a flatbed pick it up and bring it to the transmission shop recommended by the dealer. Transmission replaced. . . $3,140. 00. I feel that I was lucky to have been in the lane closest to the breakdown lane when this happened. Dealer offered no assistance. Eight months past warranty.
Difficulty in turning, along with a grinding noise when turning right. Vehicle mileage was 73,113. Taken to GMC dealer in brighton, mi on Nov. 14, 2014 and power steering pump and rack and pinion were replaced for $2,100. 00. The car was then driven approx. 650 miles. The next morning, when backing out of drive, the steering was locked-up and the vehicle went off the driveway. Tow truck was required to take the vehicle to GMC dealer in inver grove heights, mn where the same exact parts were replaced again! I have all receipts.
When driving such as pulling into a parking spot, the steering locks up forcing me to slam on my brakes. This malfunction happens periodically in different situations. I have checked my power steering fluid and it is at the full mark. I believe the system in this vehicle does not have a large enough reservoir which causes the rack and pinion to lock up in the middle of a turn.
Tl - the contact owns a 2008 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that while getting maintenance performed, she was notified that the brake booster, rack and pinion, and wave plate were defective. As a result the transmission, brake booster, and rack and pinion needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 39,000. Pm.
Over the last year the turning on my Acadia while at slow speeds has gotten progressively worse. This especially happens at lower speeds, but I have always been able to complete my turn. In April it finally got worse where I needed "brute force" to make a turn and I almost hit another vehicle. At this time the automobile is an "accident" waiting to happen and I will not let my wife or daughter drive it anymore. I have taken the car to my mechanic and he has replaced the power steering pump and rack and pinion and the problem still continues!!! he does not know what else to do! I see that there are many other out there having the exact same problem. Gm needs to find a solution to the problem and fix it!! this is a 45k car and these types of problems should not exist, and if they do, they should be handled by gm promptly. I am planning on filing a lawsuit as soon as I find a lawyer familiar with these gm issues.
Our 2009 GMC Acadia's power steering locks up at low speeds. This happens randomly and typically always when the wheel is turned. Once the wheel locks it remains 'stuck' for a little over 1 second. While the wheel is 'stuck' it cannot be turned. This is a very common complaint on this vehicle and creates an very dangerous driving condition. A mechanic has diagnosed this issue as a faulty rack and pinion. The mechanic also claimed that this is very common on these vehicles. I was shocked the first time the wheel became stuck while I was driving; it instantly sent me in to a panic. There needs to be a recall on this vehicle.
We drove 5 hours to get our Acadia. Only to realize the very next day less than 24 hours the steering wasn't working right. If parked or at low speeds it is as if it has no power steering. This makes it pretty much impossible to get out of any right spots, parking spots & it literally impossible to parallel park. This issue has only gotten worse. I have researched online and have seen tons of complaints of this same issue and is stating the ones who did have the issue fixed it was the rack and pinion which costed $1400-$1700 to fix! therefore a recall needs to be made of this issue due to faulty assembly before someone gets injured!.
The rack and pinion steering gear and power steering pump appear to be defective in my 2009 GMC Acadia. For the past several weeks my power steering will lock up or freeze mid-turn, which is very scary. The power steering is gone completely and I have to turn really hard before it seems to re-engage. I am unable to take tight turns in this situation and I am often on the wrong side of the road as I try to pull out of the turn waiting for the power steering to re-engage. I have been lucky so far that I have not run into any oncoming cars when the system locks up. My car is currently in the shop and we are looking at least $1500 worth of repairs.
The contact owns a 2009 GMC Acadia. The contact stated when the steering wheel was turned it made a knocking noise. The dealer performed a diagnostic test which located the failure in the steering gear box and the rack pinion ball rack assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 28,600.
Since the day I purchased my 2008 GMC Acadia I have been having trouble with the power steering. When I start to turn the vehicle the power steering goes completely out. It continues to get worse daily. The first time I took it to gm they told me that it just needed power steering fluid. So they filled it up. This did nothing to correct the problem. I took it back for a second time, and gm said that they could find nothing wrong with the power steering. The power steering stops working and when making a turn it is almost impossible to make the turn. Next, I took my Acadia to a independent repair shop. They told me that the steering rack, or as gm calls it, the rack and pinion was cracked and needed to be replaced. I then spent around $800 to have the steering rack replaced. I began driving it hoping this would solve the problem but it did not fix the steering problem. I took the Acadia back to gm, and they looked at it again. They told me the rack and pinion, or the steering rack was faulty. I told them about replacing it 3 months ago, and they told me that unless I had replaced both the steering rack and the pump at the same time then the part that was not replaced would cause the other part to fail. Next, I took it back to the local repair shop and told them what gm had said. They looked at the steering rack that they had replaced and told me that there was absolutely nothing wrong with the new part they had replaced. They looked into the manuals and internet replacement guides for gm parts and could find nothing saying you had to replace both parts or the one that was not replaced would fail. The power steering continues to fail. It should be recalled. Gm will do nothing unless I replace both parts. I guess I will have to wait until someone dies to get gm to take care of the problem and hold their company responsible for the faulty parts on the 2008 GMC Acadia.
