Power steering pump, rack and pinion all needed to be replaced while under 100k miles. Was unable to effectively turn because steering was stiff. I noticed it most at low speeds in particular. Had several occasions that I began turning with plenty of time to make a turn and barely completed the turn in time.

When attempting to make a left turn at an intersection, the steering wheel became very difficult to turn and I had to use both hands to turn the wheel. During the month, there were several more instances with slow turns to the right and left. There is also a bumping noise (thump, thump) coming from somewhere underneath the steering wheel. It is not all the time but increasing as time goes on. The steering wheel is more becoming more difficult to turn and the incidents are increasing. I went to a chevorlet/GMC dealership this morning and was told it was either my power steering pump or the rack and pinion that would need to be replaced. They would have to have my vehicle for 2 days, one to test it to determine the exact nature fo the problem and one day to fix it. The cost would be anywhere from $300-$600, depending on the cause. I have read several forums on the internet of Acadia owners with the same issue but power steering problems going down interstates when attempting to exit onto an off ramp at a high rate of speed.
My Acadia has has some problems with the power steering being "stiff" - or hard to turn in tight spots. (I. E. , parking or close turns). I took it to my repairman today and asked him to check it out. He says that he has seen issues with other vehicles, including the Acadia and the enclave - this same issue. He started taking it apart and called me and said the entire power steering system, pump, rack n pinion steering, etc. Have to be replaced. He said he has had to do this in several other vehicles like this. He said that there were already metal shavings showing up. He told me that parts and labor would be around $1,100 to get this taken care of. He said it will just gradually get worse - it shouldn't go out all together all at once, but it would get worse. I have seen 25+ other complaints on this same problem with the same vehicles. When is gm going to do something about this. I have done regular maintenance on this vehicle all along. It has approx. 80,000 miles on it right now. Has been doing this for about a year - not bad - but he is right - getting a little worse all the time.

Vehicle was slowing to turn and at 15mph the steering locked up making the vehicle uncontrollable. Vehicle was stopped by median curb and steering somehow unlocked. Took vehicle to dealership and they replaced the steering gear, rack and pinion, and power steering pump. Now a little over 18months later the vehicle has started losing power steering again. Dealership is quoting me $2100 to fix when they replaced the last part under a warranty/recall.

Transmission started slipping. I would pull out onto a street and it would slip and I almost got his by a car. I took it in repeatedly to dealer and they couldn't duplicate and after repeatedly taking it back and them keeping it for a month they finally replaced the transmission. Repeated steering issues. I took it in constantly and was told nothing wrong but after looking at it myself I found melted bushing and after being told all that had been replaced already. Steering problems from day 1. 4 times of having power steering replaced and steering column and every time I got the vehicle back the vibration was worse, today I found the problem on my own. The rack and pinion has a major leak. Not sure how repeated trips to the dealership and they couldn't see this. My steering also locks up while driving almost hit a car. . And the dealership never has loaners so im stuck driving an unsafe vehicle while I wait because I was told I can only go where I bought my vehicle because of the extended warranty. This vehicle goes in to the shop and as soon as it is picked up it needs to go right back the same day. Worst vehicle and most unsafe of anything I've ever owned.
I purchased this vehicle from a GMC dealership on March 1st 2014. The very next day I replaced a headlight (no big deal), a few days later it was veering to the left very hard so I took it back. They said the alignment was off 45 degrees, so they fixed it. 1 month later the steering started locking up when turning at slow speeds. I had it diagnosed by the gm dealership who said it was the rack and pinion, and struts and bearings. I took it to another auto shop who said it was the power steering pump and replaced it, the locking up stopped. They said the rack and pinion were bad but could last a bit longer. A month later the air conditioner was completely out(the very first time I turned it on), and a month later the entire car is whining very loudly which I am assuming is the rack and pinion finally giving out. I have spent 20k on this vehicle and had it for 6 months now. In that 6 months it has been in the shop at least once a month. That is on top of the 3 recalls it has been in for in the 6 month period also. Now it has to go back in to fix this rack and pinion. Thankfully I purchased an extended warranty, but this steering column is not all covered. I am beyond frustrated and tired of throwing in thousands of dollars when I have had the vehicle a short amount of time, and this replacing of the steering rack is a bit ridiculous since the vehicle does not even have 100k miles on it. I was told it is unsafe to drive, but when I dont have an extra few thousand dollars to throw into it after putting a huge downpayment on it, and having a brand new Ford vehicle for 9 years and never having to put a dime into it. I am sick of it. It is wrong that gm put faulty cheap parts into their vehicles.
Parts inside the power steering pump destroyed causing metal filings in the power steering fluid. The filings caused the the rack and pinion system to fail resulting in a complete loss of power steering. The vehicle became extremely hard to steer and is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed! there is no recall on this and undoubtably will result in fatalities. Research I have done says this is a common problem. Please take action!.
The first issue was the water pump, replaced it and 2 months later out went the power steering pump. At that time of replacing the power steering pump the dealership also replaced the rack and pinion and timing chain. Now, it's the transmission. Going rounds with gm to get them to take care of the issue in its entirety. This vehicle doesn't even have 63k miles on it! this vehicle is defective in every which way. I'm worried about what will go out next. I was looking for something reliable and safe and this Acadia has been everything but that. I have several friends that are also experiencing the same issues. Let the game begin. I have never had a vehicle that I feel is so unsafe and unreliable. I am a hard working woman who drove the same car for 13 years and had none of the issues that I am having with this Acadia that I paid twice as much for! so, to anyone wanting to purchase an Acadia, do reconsider, even as dependable as you feel your dealership may be. . . It will be a lemon in the long run. Be prepared to get your gloves on in the ring with GMC as I'm currently doing. . . As I'm driving a dealership loaner, for 2 days now. . . Good luck!.

Starting slowly and intermittently when making a hard turn to the left from a standing start, power steering lost. This was particularly dangerous when turning into or across oncoming traffic as turning radius truncated and correction ("recovery") became very difficult. Subsequently frequency of occurrence increased and included hard turns to the right. Checked for TSB/recall. TSB(technical service bulletin) found. Followed recommendation to flush and exchange change power steering fluid. This resulted in correction for a short period of time after which steering intermittently lost with very sluggish steering. Flushed and exchanged power steering fluid for a second time and filled to 1/4 inch above tank full line as some recommended on on a TSB website. Unfortunately the power steering failure returned, again intermittently but with increase frequency. There were several near accidents because of the steering fail. Manufacturer/ dealership contacted. The only advice was follow the TSB instructions. Because in my mind and based on my experience with the intermittent and unpredictable power steering failures that have occurred a complete overhaul of the power steering system, as well as rack & pinions as directed in the TSB will be undertaken in three days. In my opinion having done some research regarding this problem which apparently has occurred in a number of Acadia as well as similar models in the gm family which I understand have had recalls, the Acadia power steering issue deserves immediate nhtsb investigation.
The contact towns a 2008 GMC Acadia. The contact stated while driving approximately 25 mph attempting to make a turn, the steering wheel became almost impossible to maneuver. The problem recurred multiple times. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The technician stated that the power steering pump needed to be replaced. Also, the vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who agreed that the power steering pump needed to be replaced and stated that a hose that was connected to the rack and pinion and steering pump may have collapsed. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the approximately was 68,000. The VIN was unavailable.
Power steering went out completely with absolutely no warning while driving my child to school. Luckily I was not in a vehicle accident. This has happend to me twice already for this vehicle. Both power steering and rack and pinion have gone out while driving and has been replaced twice by GMC in the past 9 months!.
Apparently the entire line up of gm crossovers (acadia, enclave, and traverse) 2007-2010 are affected by a power steering problem. Mine has a whine in the power steering pump. It is possibly the pump, or the rack and pinion. The dealer quoted me $450-$1000 to repair. I know that they have improved the power steering pumps on these vehicles, which indicates to me that the original was defective. I feel like steering is a part of safely driving these vehicles. If the power steering goes out while I am driving our Acadia, I might be able to handle it, but if my wife were driving it, the outcome may be very different.
I took my 2009 Acadia into the GMC dealer with around 65,000 miles on it after buying it used (1 previous owner) with around 42,000 miles. They told me I had a power steering leak in the rack and pinion and it would cost around $2000 to replace a seal because they have to pull the whole rack off. He told me it would be okay for a while, but eventually it would cause the power steering to go out. After researching, I've seen multiple other Acadia owners who have had the exact same problem. I have refused to pay for the repairs because I think this is a safety issue that has effected enough of this model vehicle to warrant a general safety recall. I know of 3 other people in my hometown who have experienced power steering problems with their Acadia's, and the GMC dealership acknowledged to me that it is a significant problem with GMC Acadia model years 2008-2012. If that's not enough, then I'm not sure what is, but if my power steering goes out while I'm driving, well, let this serve as notice to GMC.
I have had the rack & pinion steering rack replaced 2 times since I've owned the vehicle (bought new in July 2008) dealership replaced both after getting ugly with them, now at 75,000 miles transmission went out, replaced it. Got it back from dealer and now the steering locks up when turning, usually happens when taking off from a stop and then it finally unlocks as your trying to turn with excessive force. Feels like the power steering just goes out for a few seconds and then comes back. Have just dealt with it last few weeks, but now after not able to turn and hit a curb while turning, there is obviously something defective. Doing research on this there is numerous complaints about the steering locking up, this is very dangerous if its defective. Paying 45k for a vehicle you shouldn't have to argue with the dealer on replacing this part. Is there something being done to fix this issue. I have almost come to a decision that gm doesn't stand behind their product and have about given up on them.
The headlight went out and GMC quoted me at approximately $120 to replace. Husband attempted to replace it but you had to take off the wheel in order to get to the actual light. I gave GMC the go ahead to replace and they called me back and told me that the wiring had melted and that it would now be over $300 to do it. I told them no and made a complaint. They called me a few days later telling me they would do it but I had to pay $50 deductible (assuming they went through some type of warranty). It eventually became a recall and I am now looking into getting reimbursed for my $50. Noticed my car started over heating and took it into a mechanic friend, let us know that the water pump needed to be replaced this was at approx 45,000 miles. I did my research and the GMC warranty covered the cost. At approximately 56-57,000 miles the car started making a whining noise when driven slow or first thing in the morning when it was cold. Took it in to GMC to get it checked out and it turns out that the steering rack had a leak on each side of the wheels and pinions, and power steering pump needed to be replaced. Quote almost $1500 dollars. I could not afford that price so took it back to my mechanic to see if it would be cheaper. He ended up replacing the pinions and rack but said the pump did not need to be replaced and ended paying $600 out of pocket. I'm hoping that GMC will see that many of us are having the same problem and will make it a recall. I will not be buying anymore GMC vehicles. All I want is a reliable car that won't break the bank.
I have a 2007 GMC Acadia with 59,000 miles on it. At 29,000 miles on it, they replaced the power steering pump. Now at 59,000 they are saying it needs a steering rack and pinion assembly and possibly a pump. After doing some research online, I found that these items have a very high failure rate in these vehicles. This seems like an obvious defect that would be very dangerous, especially considering that when these parts fail, the vehicle is almost if not definitely impossible to steer.
The contact owns a 2007 GMC Acadia. The contact stated that after her vehicle was serviced, she was informed that her steering rack and opinion needed to be replaced. They advised her that it was due to insufficient grease. The manufacturer was contacted and offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000.
Tl- the contact owns a 2009 GMC Acadia. While driving approximately 5 mph, the contact heard a squeaking sound coming from the steering. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnostics. The technician stated to the contact that the rack and pinion would have to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 43,000. Kmj.
2007 GMC Acadia. Consumer writes regarding the rack and pinion steering being replaced with low mileage.
I purchased a brand new 2007 GMC Acadia in Nov. Of 2007. Since new it has had a steering issue that can not be fixed. The rack and pinion has been replaced and the vehicle has burned up numerous powersteering pumps. The steering, while in a curve, will lock up and then release throwing the vehicle in the direction the wheel is turned. It has thrown the vehicle into the other lane of on coming traffic as well as throwing the vehicle of the road into a fence. Each time the dealership has picked the vehicle up replaced the steering pumps but the problem still remains. The vehicle currently has 47,000 miles on it. The transmission locked up and the shifting components were replaced, then the transmission locked up and was replaced. The steering issue is are main concern. It was taken in on 9/28/10 and received new transmission and powersteering pump. We received the vehicle on 10/25/2010. On, 10/28/10 the vehicle steering locked up again throwing my wife off the road into a fence. There is no way that gm has put three bad power steering pumps on the vehicle. The vehicle has a more serious problem that is binding the steering causing the pumps to burn up. The same problem has made the vehicle unsafe to drive due to the danger of it locking up and throwing the vehicle into on coming traffic. I have all service records reporting this issue. I will not allow my back in this vehicle and I am not comfortable trading it in for another family to be killed in it. I could not live with that. Gm will doing nothing about as they have been contacted. Please help me get a replacement for this vehicle (same year model type and equally equipped) and get this vehicle off the road. I could trade it in as gm wants me too and they will give me $1600 off the trade. But could not sleep at night knowing I put someone else and their families in danger with this vehicle. Whining while driving and clanking noise while going over bumps-was told the whining was the power steering, and needed the power steering pump to be changed. I was told the clanking noise was due to a problem with the rack and pinion. Both are directly related. I was told that many people are having problems with the rack and pinion, but GMC would not fix the problem right now, it was a problem that's "on hold. ".
Steering locks up. When you take off from a stop sign or traffic light and want to make a right or left turn the steering will lock up to a point where you can't turn. There had been several occasions that I was almost in an accident. Replaced rack and pinion 3 times and power steering. Water pumps are defective, replaced 2 before 100,000 miles transmission went out at 73,000 miles. Every issue that is stated above the dealer didn't want to replace under warranty, even after contacting gm. It took a lot of fighting with gm to replace the transmission when there was known problems with these transmissions being faulty.
This car is dangerous. Driving 65mph on freeway when every service and warning light went on. Replaced entire instrument cluster and replace ipc, could have killed us and others. Also engine was removed to repair engine front cover leak at 39,000, now at 85,000 same leak repair is required at cost of $2926. That means every 40,000 miles you need to spend $3000 and have engine removed. Power steering always made whining noise which I was told is normal. At 85,000 was told steering rack and pinion gears need replacement and I am sure the pump needs replacement as well $2000. When driving on the freeway could not stop on exit without brake pedal being pushed all the way to floor, stabiltrak light on could have killed us or someone. Had to replace brake master cylinder. Water pump was leaking after engine was put back in from 1st repair of front cover engine seal. Timing chain has stretch you can hear it, but they only added thrust washers. Rear liftgate - while loading groceries lift gate free fell closed on daughters head. Was told rear lift gate shocks failed. Could have killed someone. This car is a death trap. Don't buy it.
The contact owns a 2007 GMC Acadia. Whenever the contact attempts to turn the vehicle in either direction, the steering becomes very difficult. The contact noticed a clicking sound coming from the steering column. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and was serviced for the power steering rack and pinion. The contact did not notice any differences prior to the failures. The failure still persists. The current mileage was 25,000 and failure mileage was 8,500.
