37 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2017 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 10/04/2023

Catastrophic engine failure. Piston #1 damage after a fuel injector issue. The truck just hit 100k miles. This left my husband stranded over an hour away. No check engine light or warning other than a loud pop and smoke. No warranty on the truck, I’ve been quoted $12k for a new engine. I have read multiple forums (one thread of 77 posts) of the same thing/similar thing happening.

38 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2023 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 10/01/2023

While slowly driving, like when parking or trying to park vehicle in garage, it will randomly surge when almost at complete stop forcing vehicle to lunge forward requiring operator to apply quick additional firm braking. It almost feels like vehicle is creeping in 2nd gear and decides to downshift into 1st gear just before coming to a stop and engine applies slightly more throttle. I have almost hit garage wall and other vehicles in parking lots due to this issue. Again, it is intermittent but is alarming when happens. I have not had vehicle in for repairs yet but concerns dealer will not be able to duplicate. No warning lights on dash for this issue.

39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2018 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 04/16/2023

I was traveling on a two lane highway, a semi in front of me and a truck behind me. A warning message popped up on my dash “service emissions system- 65 mi before 65mph max speed”. And within 5 seconds of that message popping up, the engine detuned itself. I pulled over as quick as I could, but I only made it partially out of the road before the engine shut down completely. I couldn’t start the vehicle again to get it the rest of the way out of the road. I was 40 miles from the nearest town on a Sunday. I had to turn on my flashers and sit outside the vehicle for 4 hours until a tow truck was able to come get me. Thankfully at the time of incident I was on a rural highway and I wasn’t hurt, but I could have been seriously injured haha this happened on the freeway or a road in the city. It then sat at the dealership for 3 months following this to get a diagnostic and repair.

40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2017 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 04/06/2023

The transmission shudders terribly. It is available for inspection. It is unsafe because while in traffic situations, it doesn't get up to speed correctly. It is as if it can't find the gear, it feels like it is about to stall. It is not dependable to stay at a speed, or increase speed. The dealership said that changing the transmission fluid would help, and it did for a while. The problem came back, we had the fluid changed again. The problem came right back again.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2018 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 09/23/2022

“engine power reduced” service message “stabilitrack” service message “4x4” service message vehicle is available for inspection vehicle jerks and loses power while driving at highway speeds causing 18-wheelers and other drivers to swerve around me, vehicle accelerates very slowly while in city traffic. Intersections and traffic lights are difficult to navigate due to reduced engine power endangering myself and family, also other drivers. Vehicle erases all stored messages after a certain period of non-use. Dealer service center hasn’t reproduced symptoms. Service center technicians say nothing is wrong and releases the vehicle back to me. I have invoices of the vehicle taken in 3 times. Vehicle is currently in the service center as of 10 June 2023, for the same problems indicated above. Problem is unpredictable and occurs at random. Vehicle hasn’t been inspected by manufacturer, police or insurance representatives. Warning lamps, messages and symptoms started prior to September 23, 2022 can’t remember actual date. I have the first invoice vehicle was taken in to be serviced.

Failure Date: 09/09/2022

Recall #11181 for 2011 Canyon sle says gm will replace the automatic transmission adjustment clip for free. Recall was established in a GMC assembly plant when a truck would not start. Our truck randomly does not start and we’ve had it looked at with no problems found to indicate why it randomly does not start. We wait 15-20 minutes and then it will start. This recall is not being honored at a GMC dealership because of no longer available, they say. Can you help us with this issue? again, the recall # is 11181.

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2018 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 09/04/2022

At age 4 years and mileage 40,000 the engine oil coolant lines failed, causing a loss of oil. Because of the location of these lines in front of and above the front axle, the potential for oil contamination of the tire running surfaces and the brake rotor existed. Fortunately, we did not drive it any distance and were extremely cautious. In looking at the parts, which we have replaced, they show much more corrosive damage than I would have expected for the trucks age. A cursory search online revealed that this is not an uncommon problem for the gm Canyon/colorado lines.

Failure Date: 08/09/2022

The truck will lose power steering and power down. Several codes will come on. When I started researching this problem, I noticed that there is a recall that was put out for this very same problem but my vehicle is not listed as eligible for this recall. I don't understand why it would not be eligible. Can someone please let me know?.

46 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2012 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 08/04/2022

The passcode anti-theft system randomly triggers when attempting to start the vehicle. When it triggers, the vehicle cannot be started for at least 10 minutes. I have had this system trigger multiple times at home, at the grocery store, and at a gas station. I am afraid that the device will eventually leave me stranded, so I am having the device replace for the cost of over $700.

47 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2016 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 05/14/2022

1 inch section of magnetic strip glued to outer rim of reluctor rim broke off. For an item that sees such a high rate of speed, gluing anything to the outside is piss poor engineering.

48 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2020 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 01/05/2022

When rolling to stop signs or red lights, the vehicle occasionally fails to downshift properly and will attempt to continue pushing the vehicle when trying to stop. On multiple occasions, the vehicle acts as if it cannot be stopped due to the transmission failing to downshift. One must aggressively apply the brakes to get the vehicle to come to a stop. Unable to have the vehicle checked out at a local dealer, due to being backed up for weeks when trying to have it looked at. No visual indication/warning is given when this happens. There is a current class action lawsuit for models up to 2019, but this needs to be extended to 2020 models as well, as multiple online forums discuss this issue being prevalent in newer models of the 8-speed transmission.

49 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2016 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 11/26/2021

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2017 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 07/31/2021

This is the 2nd time this has happened. The 1st time making a left onto route 23 from route 296 in windham NY. Almost got t-boned. Stalled wouldn't start. Waited 5 minutes and it started again. Ran rough then died again thankfully in a more opportune spot. My car randomly & without warning loses all power and electric and shuts down. The 1st time I had it towed to matthews GMC (where I purchased 4 pick ups) and they stated it was a nox sensor and repaired it. Saturday this happened again while driving at 55 mph and stalled on a blind curve (very scary). I left a complaint on this website to hopefully prevent a fatality. I thought I would recieve a response from you the ntsb but didn't. I went online and noticed there a a number of folks that had the same problem. Do you wait for fatalities before action is taken??.

51 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2017 GMC Canyon

53 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2016 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 04/07/2021

Gm case #9-6642450485; gm recall bulletin: 15595a national highway traffic safety administration campaign id for recall: 16v054 gm issued a recall bulletin related to a defect in certain 2015 GMC Canyon trucks due to loss of power steering due to a poor electrical connection within the torque sensor harness connector. This presents a greater risk of a crash and a safety concern. My name is william sean haynes and I own a 2016 GMC Canyon VIN #1gtg5ce39g1179292. My stability track indicator came on and my power steering stopped working. I took my vehicle into a gm dealer and was charged $180 to diagnose the problem. I was told due to low voltage the recommendation was a new battery. The battery was replaced costing me an additional $140. The next day, the stability track indicator came on and my power steering stopped working again. I took it into the gm dealer again and was told this time there was an issue with my torque sensor which is the same issue in the recall bulletin #15595a for the 2015 trucks related to power steering. Concerned and frustrated, I called gm and was issued with the aforementioned case #. I was told someone would call me, which no one did. The dealer then informed me that gm would cover 80% of the cost still leaving me with a bill of $734! I wrote this compliant to GMC for several reasons and including NHTSA due to the safety issue. This is obviously the same issue being experienced in the 2016 trucks not just the 2015 trucks. I am bringing attention to this issue as this issue may constitute a recall needed for the 2016 which hasn't been done. This is not only concerning as the issue presents risk of a crash, a safety concern and owners like me having to incur out of pocket expenses. I am requesting an investigation into my issue and for GMC consideration of reimbursement of $734 in addition to $320 out of pocket expenses.

54 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2016 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 11/20/2020

Vehicle frequently shuts off during braking or while stopped and must be restarted before the vehicle can operate again. Vehicle experiences violent gear changes and significant lagging during periods of moderate acceleration at low speeds. Gear changes result in either severe unresponsiveness and a general lack of acceleration or an aggressive gear change that jerks the vehicle and spins the tires.

55 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2020 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 09/29/2020

I'm the owner of a newly bought (6/5/2020 purchased date) 2020 GMC Canyon. I took my truck into the dealership and complained that I have experienced transmission issues when downshifting or accelerating. My most common issue is shuddering when the truck accelerates and sudden jerking when downshifting gears when driving up an incline or even coming to a complete stop. The dealership said they haven't had any problems with the 2020 Canyons and unless it reads a code there's nothing they can do. Gm said tell the customer to drive it and we will call if we get any further information. This is a serious problem. I was driving the vehicle and because of the sudden jerking and transmission & or engine issues with the vehicle the rpms reved up to over 4500 rpms and I was stuck out in the middle of a lane and could not go anywhere. I had cars avoiding me so that way they would not hit me head on or on the side of my truck. This is a serious and fatal accident waiting to happen and the issue is gm knows about it because it happened with their 2015- 2019 colorado and cannon series. Despite many complaints and numerous lawsuits about these serious issues, there are currently no ongoing investigations regarding transmission and engine defects for these vehicles within gm for the 2020 canon. I have paid almost $50,000 for a vehicle that should have a lemon law put on it because gm knows they are producing bad transmission/engines and not doing anything about it. I asked gm corporate and the local dealership what am I supposed to do when I'm in another situation where the vehicle does not want to get in gear and is shaking and shuttering and jerking and revving up the rpms and the next time. I said I probably wouldn't be so lucky as to having people avoid me and then me and my daughter wind up in a head on collision and we don't make it out alive.

Failure Date: 08/06/2018

Cranks but no start intermittently. GMC dealer states that there is not problem. Must wait 10 mintures, then try and it always starts. Not isolated. . . Google, 2006 Canyon won't start and there are multiple descriptions of the same problem. Some have speculated that it is a 'relay', problem with the ignition system or the "passlock". I am not aware of any accident but if avoiding an accident and it won't start it is just a matter of time. This has been an ongoing problem for at least 3-4 years, occurring at least once per month. Others recorded the same history. (xxxx) parts of this document have been redacted to protect personally identifiable information pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. 65 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2017 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 06/04/2018

Torque converter fails at 12000 miles for many. There is a GMC notice out since 2016. Mine failed at 16000 miles and the one they replaced will likely fail again in another 16k miles. This is bad. I noticed it when I pressed on the accelerator and as I increased speed up to 45 mph. It rattled and rocked badly. The GMC repairman said, "yeap. . . . . Ever since 2016 all these damn torque converters have been failing in the Canyons and colorados because gm and chevy changed the size and strength of the metal used in order to reduce the weight of trhe vehicle. We will replace it, but I can assure you it will fail again and you'll have to bring it back to use for change out again. " wow. . . . What a bunch of crap.

66 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2018 GMC Canyon

Failure Date: 01/18/2018

Transmission slipped almost from start. Took three appointments and two years - if my shop foreman knew the third time, why did he not call and tell me we now know your problem. I finally got fed up and brought it in one more time. Starter from day one maybe 50% of time made loud bang when bendix retracted. Shop refused to take it off!!! I checked ball joint boots. One feels like no grease in it. They 'looked' at it. No answer and nothing was done. Has had 'lifter noise' since new when small acceleration. Noise rate accelerates till shift and then repeats. I'm told they don't hear anything. I am 76 and hard of hearing. Pleeeeeze - don't tell me there isn't any. Not my best day today and felt it's time to say crap is crap.

67 Engine And Engine Cooling problem of the 2008 GMC Canyon

"cruise control" went out and I cannot find out where the problem is. The fuses are excellent. While I was driving I had the cruise control on, then all of a sudden for no reason the green illumination on the dash that let's me know it's on, was off. I tried to engage the cruise control again but that did not work. The green illumination on the dash does not come on anymore even as I attempt to engage the cruise control. I was on the highway at the time this happened.

When I first start the truck and slowly leave my driveway, I could feel the binding and hear the sequeling. After driving 20 minutes this all goes away. Repairs $500. 00 which it drives 100 percent better!.
