Automatic Transmission problems of the 2004 GMC Envoy

Ten problems related to automatic transmission have been reported for the 2004 GMC Envoy. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 05/12/2010

Speedometer dont work, gas gauge dont work, transmission is going out etc and I only had the vehichle for 9 months now but the problems have been for along time.

2 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2008

Truck service engine light has continuously come on and off. The transmission went and lost all gears at 52,000 miles, after the vehicle had been in at 31,000 miles for the same reason. There have been multiple items in which the service engine light has been transmission several times but dealership could not find anything, fuel cap, fuel tank neck, internal gauge for the fuel tank, and only to get the vehicle back on 3/19/08 and for the service engine light to come on again. I swear this truck is a total lemon! I have had nothing but problems with this vehicle, and every time I have taken it to the dealership they can never find anything wrong. This last time was a total fight with the dealership regarding the transmission, along with no morals and respect for the consumer from gm themselves or the dealership. I believe that I have ended up with a lemon, and there is not a darn thing I have been able to do about it because no one seems to think that there is a problem. Contacted on-star to run diagnostic checks every time the service engine light has come on and they can not seem to find anything so I end up taking it to the dealer for 65. 00 an hour for diagnostic check and being told there is something else wrong with the truck and was assured that they ran all diagnostic checks and cleared all the codes after fixing the transmission. This is beginning to become very annoying, costly, and unreliable when transporting children in what I call an unsafe vehicle. I have put more money into this vehicle than what it is worth with such low miles!.

3 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/21/2007

Bought "certified used" Envoy in October of 07. Transmission completely stopped at 57k miles 3 months after purchase. Check engine light comes on and off every couple days(have video, but sandy sansing of pensacola florida says there nothing wrong) vehicle jerks at stops and starts. After 3 trips to dealership w/ "nothing wrong" they finally decided that a O2 sensor was bad at 71k. Envoy had been back in the shop at a cost of 80. 00 bucks twice since then because of the "check engine" light and the brakes are failing, the "abs brake" light doesn't come on so they say it cant be the brakes. When trying to stop the brakes stop working and a second later they will catch and begin to stop vehicle, as if the brake system is obstructed and skips a few times. The check engine light flashes for those few seconds but doesn't stay on long and they say it isn't throwing any codes. Problem doesn't happen everyday so the dealership has said its a unfounded problem. The thermostats assembly with other parts have been replaced. Have all receipts and dates that I've taken this pos into the dealership. I will never buy another GMC vehicle. I have a 10 year old pickup truck also and has only been in the shop once. There's no excuse that we are driving these (expensive) unsafe vehicles!!.

4 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/29/2007

I was driving in town and my speedometer stopped working at 0. The oil gauge is not working, pegged out at the max and my engine light is now constantly on. These events, particularly the speedometer not working, is a major safety hazard. Not driving at controllable speeds can lead to an accident and death. The parts and labor to fix this problem is $550. While researching this problem on the internet, I've found out that this is a common problem with GMC's in this year. There should be a recall with the cluster unit on 2004 GMC Envoys. GMC should try to prevent deaths that their products may create.

5 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 10/06/2005

Traveling on the interstate at 60 mph transmission shifted gears via cruise control and the transmission lost 3rd and 4th gears. When contacting onstar 3 different times they insisted it was safe to drive. Then the whole transmission died.

6 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2005

Transmission not shifting correctly, abs light, brake light, emergency brake light, 4-wd drive light, heat/ac crusie control not working. Found pi report, ignition switch replaced, fixed problem.

7 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2004

1. Engine will shut off when making a hard turn: after stopped at a stop sign, I was trying to make a hard turn (steering wheel reached the maximum turning angle) when the engine suddenly shut off itself. It happened three times either tuning left or right (today), but always after stopping and with a hard turning angle. It is such a huge safety defect with all the cars infront and behind you. No repair action has been taken. The problem may be reproduced. 2. Turning signals not working after emergency lights used: it happened two times. Turning signal lights (left or right) will not work correctly after the emergency lights were in use; instead both left and right turning lights will flash at the same time. It can be reproduced. No repair action taken yet. 3. Difficult turning at a hard turn with 4-wheel-drive is it is almost impossible to make a hard turn when the 4-whell-drive is on. It happens every time. No repair action taken yet.

8 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/21/2004

I own a 2004 Envoy xl with a v-8 motor. I have complained to the dealer, who states they can't find a problem, that the transmission jerks extremely bad when it changes into 2nd gear and then again when it shifts into drive. I have been told by other Envoy owners that they have actually had their transmissions replaced, and one friend had even had his vehicle exchanged under the lemon law. The dealer had virtually done nothing to correct the problem. Other dealers in my area don't want to mess with the vehicle, and it only has 6500 miles on it. I'm beginning to believe that I've been stuck with a lemon.

9 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2004

While driving and approaching a stop for a red light, there was a very loud crashing sound from under the vehicle. The vehicle was no longer able to drive in 1st gear or reverse. The vehicle was able to propel itself in 'd', but was very sluggish as if trying to start driving a manual transmission in 2nd or 3rd gear. While the vehicle was in neutral it would still propel itself when the accelerator was depressed. It was no longer able to be moved manually by pushing, it would only move when driven forward or when the rear wheels where lifted off the ground when it was towed. The dealer has recommended a new transmission.

10 Automatic Transmission problem

Failure Date: 07/30/2004

When contact comes to a yield sign transmission jerks before going into gear. Later he was told this was a brake problem. When approaching a hill/downhill and applying brakes they lock and car slides. Dozens of times check brake, service 4 wheel drive lights have come on. Contact has taken vehicle to dealer over 12 times since it has been purchased. Due service lights, brakes and transmission. Consistently told by dealer that nothing is wrong. But dealer aknowledges check brake lights have come on. Dealer states that if computer diagnostic does not produce an error code, then there is nothing they can do.
