Tank Assembly problems of the 2006 GMC Envoy - part 2

86 problems related to tank assembly have been reported for the 2006 GMC Envoy. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

36 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2010

I purchased a 2006 Envoy in August, 2009, with 36,000 miles on it. On Tuesday, October 26, 2010, while driving to work, I noticed the fuel gauge started to read 1/4 tank full. When I left home 45 mins. Earlier, it read 3/4 tank full (I work approx. 7 miles from home). By the time I got to work, the gauge read "e" and the fuel light came on. When I fill the tank, then the light goes out. Gauge fluctuation began around 1/2 tank full. I read many, many complaints about the 2006 Envoy fuel level sensor, and me and hundreds of other consumers believe there should be a recall immediately from GMC!!!! my thing is why wait until some unfortunate event happens, as someone being stuck on a road or worse, a life being loss!!.

37 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2010

I was at 1/8 of a tank of fuel, filled up and upon restarting the car, the low fuel light came on and won't go off.

38 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/20/2010

My wife and I were on a trip driving on the interstate in our 2006 GMC Envoy, the gas gauge read between 1/4 tank and "e" and I planned to get off at the next exit (aprox 12 miles) to refuel. While in heavy traffic and passing in the left lane, our Envoy just died! with no power anything (brakes, steering, ect. ) I desperately made my way to the right shoulder to try and figure out what had happened. We had run out of fuel even though the gauge read plenty to make the next exit. Stranded for hours awaiting a tow, out trip was ruined. Since then the fuel gauge on our Envoy has not worked properly, it will read "e" for days just after we fill up then jump all over the dial never giving us the same reading each time we start the car. We have been told by the local GMC dealer this will cost us $600 to fix or live with an unreliable fuel gauge, of course what the don't tell you is this is a huge problem with GMC Envoys that you will only hear about when searching the internet.

39 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/13/2010

Gas guage reads empty, even after filling tank. It sometimes fluctuates, but returns to empty with the warning light on and alarm sounding. This is a 2006 Envoy xl with 50,000 miles. I am greatly concerned about the vehicle running out of gas and being subsequently impacted from the rear, especially at highway speeds. I have read over 400 complaints online, affecting many vehicle years and models. When will action be taken to recall and replace the defective units? after bailing out gm with taxpayer dollars, I would expect that gm would follow the correct ethical course and both redesign and replace the unit in all the vehicle years affected; I believe an existing complaint already exists, complaint(dp10001).

40 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2010

Faulty fuel tank sensor in my 2006 GMC Envoy. Filled my truck up only for the gas gauge to read empty. Then my check engine light came on! took it to the mechanic who told me the fuel tank sensor failed and he noted it a common problem in the Envoy. Its costing me 800. 00 to fix this. I have done some web research and it indeed looks to be a common problem, I find this very disturbing.

41 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2010

With no advance warning, the fuel gauge started reading empty immediately when tank was filled. Possibly related or not, the flap in the fuel filler neck disappeared about the same time the problem started. Once the problem began, the fuel light would come on when the car was started and would stay on constantly. The check engine light is always on as well. As fuel level decreased sometimes the guage would apparently read correctly (e. G. Below 3/4 tank). Stopping or starting sometimes caused the guage to fluctuate; often the guage goes up and down several times a minute. Over the last eight months the condition has worsened and the guage often reads empty, with occasional swings up to approximately correct level (estimate based on miles driven since filling tank). However, the guage never went below 1/8 tank, even though it was less than two gallons from empty in a 24-gallon tank.

42 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

Fuel level gauge will read full or partially full when fuel tank is actually empty. Or when fuel tank is full, the fuel gauge will still read empty and low fuel indicator light is on. Vehicle actually ran out of fuel when the fuel gauge read 1/4 tank. Vehicle stopped just out of a busy intersection, could have resulted in major accident.

43 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2010

The contact owns a 2006 GMC Envoy. The contact stated that the fuel gauge was defective. When she filled the fuel tank, the gauge would indicate that the tank was empty and the gas light would illuminate. The failure occurred everytime she filled the fuel tank. The vehicle had not been inspected or repaired. The manufacturer had not been notified. The current mileage was 76,721. The failure mileage was approximately 76,600.

44 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/20/2010

After exiting interstate and pulling into parking lot of our child care provider, car ran out of gas and came to a stop. Fuel gauge indicated that there was approx 1/4 tank of gas. Walked to gas station with my two children to buy a gas can and fill tank up. Gas gauge has continued to be inaccurate. When gas tank is full, the "low gas light" turns on. After driving approx 50 miles, light goes off and gauge indicated car has approx 3/4 tank, although the gas gauge fluctuates between 3/4 tank full and 1/4 tank full. We now have to set the "trip" button to 0 every time we fill the Envoy with a full tank of gas and we refill when milage is at approx 250 miles. There have been times that we have added 23 gallons of gas (almost a completely empty tank) and gas gauge indicates there is still a 1/4 tank of gas left. We have not had the gas gauge fixed at this time. Have been quoted by one GMC dealer ship that cost would be $600-800.

45 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/18/2010

After filling the gas tank the fuel system gauge would go to full the go all the way to empty, 1/2 full then back full and repeat same action. What if I was to run out of gas, and get hit behind? 8tr.

46 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/15/2010

2006 GMC Envoy. Fill up the gas tank to full and the gas gauge reads as empty! you drive the truck for a few miles then the gauge will read normal. Then fill up again and reads empty. I have seen alot of people online with this same exact problem. . Seems like every 2006 has this problem.

47 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2010

The fuel sensor on our 2006 GMC Envoy failed in September 2010. The low fuel light never goes off even when the vehicle has just been filled up the check engine light will come on. We must use our trip to keep track of millage to let us know when it is time to fill up. This is a safety concern as you never know exactly how much gas is in the tank and because the gas mileage on this vehicle fluctuates from 15mpg-18mpg. When the check engine light comes on we are not sure if it is because of the fuel sensor or because of another problem. It seems that many GMC Envoys have this same problem and recently we read an article stating that GMC is looking into this problem. We wanted to make sure that our problems are reported as well.

48 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Fuel meter repeatedly incorrect on 2006 GMC Envoy. After filling the car, the fuel light will illuminate and the gas meter will read empty. Driving will cause the gas meter to bounce between 0 - full sporadically - sometimes stopping in the middle, at 1/4, 3/4, 1/2 tank. Always incorrect. Very dangerous. No idea where my fuel level is at any time.

49 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

Own a 2006 GMC Envoy with 40,ooo miles . The sendind unit in fuel tank is faulty. When you fill the tank it will say full and then it will read empty. It goes up and down but it usually reads empty and is never correct.

50 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2010

The fuel tank level sensor is defective. This may result in vehicle running out of fuel, stall, being rear ended or stranded in harsh winter conditions.

51 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/25/2010

Gas gauge reads empty, even after filling tank. When will action be taken to recall and replace the defective units? after bailing out gm with taxpayer dollars, I would expect that gm would follow the correct ethical course and both redesign and replace the unit in all the vehicle years affected; or is this a cost-benefit issue for the company? with so many years and models affected, would it be cheaper to pay to settle any injury or death related lawsuits versus the cost of redesigning and replacing all of the defective units? at least Toyota is not turning a deaf ear to its customer base and is demonstrating morally ethical behavior.

52 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/01/2010

After filling gas tank the gauge suddenly dropped to empty and check engine light would come on. Gauge goes up and down eraticaly. Contacted GMC to which they would not help me. Search on line said there was a silent recall other owners said gm took care of problem up to 70,000 miles gm told me it was not a gm web site so they cannot do anything . . Search internet and hundreds are having same problem. . . This is unsafe so I am filing a complaint as other have done before me. . . . . . This is hazardous if you run out of gas everything shuts down and can cause and accident. . . There need to be a recall. . . .

53 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/13/2010

I have a 2006 Envoy xl that has a faulty gas gauge. It shows empty most of the time. I have contacted onstar and let them run a diagnostic of the situation. They tell me that the computer will sense a low or empty fuel tank and shut the engine down as to not harm the engine. I have read a lot of blogs about this problem on a lot of Envoys and have seen no recalls on it. Can someone explain to me why not ? I don't want a $500 bill to fix their problem of a lot of Envoys. I guess they are waiting till some one gets killed to do that.

54 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/06/2010

I have a 2006 GMC Envoy, in July 2010 my vehicle low fuel light came on shortly after I filled my tank, the low fuel light was glowing and the bell was sounding as if I was on empty in August the problem continued to occur off and on, in September the problem seem to get worse. Now in October I am not sure how much gas in actually in my gas tank, the light constantly glows and the bells constantly sounds as if I am on e. I have two young children as well as foster children I do not want to put them in danger but I feel this is a very serious problem that GMC needs to address before an accident occurs due to the vehicle stalling.

55 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/01/2010

Filled fuel tank until pump clicked off. As soon as I started vehicle, fuel gauge dropped to below e and light, buzzer sounded alerting me low fuel. Check engine light came on. Preparing to leave on vacation so I drove to local mechanic who advised me of the problems with several gm suvs. He thought as long as I set my trip (so as not to run out of gas), I would be fine on trip. One year later, I still haven't gotten it fixed(hoped I could wait gm out), the problem is a bit worse in that the gauge jumps around and fuel empty buzzer goes on and off all the time . . Very annoying. Gm says not a safety issue so no recall ???? why does it have to be a safety issue. Check out the internet ,, there are hundreds of complaints, and we all know that there would be thousands if everyone would report the problems. Why not track how many replacement parts have been sold rather than complaints. That should tell you something. I guess why recall as long as they can make money.

56 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2010

The contact owns a 2006 GMC Envoy xl. The contact stated that the fuel gauge would read empty when she refueled the fuel tank to capacity. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who diagnosed a faulty fuel gauge and advised that the fuel system would need to be replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted and the vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 25,000 and current mileage was 36,000.

57 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 04/10/2010

Aproximately one year ago, the fuel gauge started reading inaccurately and showing either a full tank or an empty tank. Finally it just went to the empty side of the gauge. I used the odometer to estimate gas usage and never let it go over 300 miles w/o a fill up. When I took it in for service, the repair shop dropped the fuel tank andreplaced the fuel sending unit, the bill was approximately $400. 00.

58 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 03/24/2010

2006 gmac Envoy. Upon filling gas tank to full the check engine light comes on and the fuel gauge shows empty. Gauge will fluxuate between empty and full for 10-20 miles. Then it will show full and the check engine light goes off. For the next couple of days it will swing back and forth between full and empty. Then it seems to work, although I'm not sure, it just does not swing quickly. I think this is a severe hazard. . . What if I was going 70 mph on the highway when and it shows 1/2 tank, but runs out of gas. Steering would be impaired and an accident could result.

59 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 02/26/2010

About 4 months ago, at around 42,000 miles, after filling up the fuel tank, the fuel gauge started fluctuating from full to empty. For a few months this would only happen when the fuel tank was above â¾ full, but lately the fuel gauge will drop to empty for longer periods of time and at any fuel tank level not just when it is full. This makes it real hard to know how much gas is left in the tank and would make it possible to run out of gas.

60 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 01/10/2010

2006 GMC Envoy fuel level indicator. Very erratic and never accurate. It will read empty with a full tank.

61 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/16/2009

2006 GMC Envoy xl --same problem here. It started acting up just after the warranty ran out (just under 40,000 miles)! check engine light is on because of the sensor and will not pass inspection because the light is "on" fill up tank write down mileage is getting old. Time for our stimulus from gm! do the right thing and recall the defective sensors. Fuel gauge always reads empty now --could run out of gas without knowledge anytime/anywhere.

62 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 10/15/2009

The contact owns a 2006 GMC Envoy denali. While driving approximately 35 mph the contact noticed the fuel gauge displayed empty. The contact previously added fuel and confirmed that the fuel tank was not empty. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 57,000.

63 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 09/03/2009

The vehicle started to mark empty fuel tank and sometimes full tank, until the check engine light came on, after that the fuel gage marks empty, I took the vehicle to the dealership on October 2009 and their response was that the truck was out of warranty and if I need the repair I would have to pay. I contact gm on their 1-800 number but their automated response denied any claims. A few months ago I received a letter from gm acknowledging the problem and willing to share half of the cost for the repair. Why should I pay for their failure and bad quality? the parts should have been tested at least a million cycles, but apparently not, and my vehicle failed at the 78th time of fill-up the tank, what a shame. . . .

64 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/15/2009

2006 Envoy - fuel gage sending unit shows e after just putting a full tank of gas in. Check engine comes on then. Will slowly move up to full after driving about 100 miles.

65 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/11/2009

The contact owns a 2006 GMC Envoy. She experienced failures with the abs system. The fuel gage registered empty when the gas tank was full and also the seats and windows electrical switch. While driving at night on August 11,2009 all lights failed. She will take the vehicle to the dealer. The failure mileage was unknown and the current mileage was 41,590.

66 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 08/09/2009

2006 GMC Envoy. Fuel guage stopped working after about 3 or 4 years. Reads empty even when the tank is full, just like the hundreds of other Envoy owners having the same problem.

67 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 07/15/2009

Gas gauge started malfunctioning at about 50,000 miles. It was fluctuating from empty to a normal read after fill up, now it just stays on empty even after filling the tank completely. Something that has to do with the sending unit and fuel sensor. Dealer wants about $800 to repair. After checking the internet, hundreds of people are complaining of the same thing.

68 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2009

2006 GMC Envoy. Fuel sensor is not working. While gauge usually stays at e even after filling the tank, occasionally it will flucuate between empty and full. I have run out of gas several times because of this. Running out of gas on the highway or busy streets is dangerous.

69 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2009

2006 GMC Envoy xl - fuel gauge reads empty at all times, even after filling tank. Safety concern due to not being able to accurately tell how much fuel is in tank. Could possibly run out of gas on road/highway posing threat of crash/injury.

70 Tank Assembly problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2009

After filling the fuel tank it refused to read full - stayed on empty and now the gauge does up and down at will. Also the smell of gas is coming through the air conditioner.
