GMC Envoy owners have reported 11 problems related to front seat belt retractor (under the seat belt category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
The driver's seat belt locks up randomly and can not be pulled out to fasten across the driver. It can take varying lengths of time to manipulate it to finally release it - anywhere from a few seconds to several minutes. Half of the time I have to get out of the vehicle to struggle with it. One time I was not able to release it (one complete failure) and had to drive home without my seatbelt fastened. The reason for filing this complaint is because I have an average of 1 failure a day since I've owned the vehicle. This is extremely frustrating, embarrassing, and time consuming. But my primary concern is over my safety in the vehicle with a seat belt I can't rely on.

2004 Envoy driver side seat belt will not release. The consumer had great difficulty trying to get the seat belt to release from the retractor.
Driver's side seat belt retractor failed. The seat belt was replaced. However, the part continued to fail.
Driver seat malfunctions, it jams and I can not get it unjammed. The dealership replaced the belt. 7 days later it jammed again. Dealer said they will not fix it again. They say it is over spooling. The seat belt needs to work at all times. State law requires a seat belt on to drive. When it jams I can not drive.
I bought a 2004 GMC Envoy from knightlinger motors in coudersport PA 3-2004. I started having seat belt malfunction within the first month of purchase. I kept going back to them when the driver's seat belt kept locking into place. They would assist in un locking it. Over the last two years the seat belt mechanics have been replaced four times unsuccessfully. It is not right that nothing will be done to correct this safety issue. Every time I get behind the wheel I take a 99% risk of injury due to the fact that the seat belt is non functioning. It is a come and go kind of thing. One minute it works then the next week I am left without usage. I have four children and myself in that vehicle and yet GMC has not fixed the problem. I have contacted GMC and they tried to appease me by providing an extended warranty. I have been in contact with on many occasion discussing this issue and yet they keep saying that the seat belt needs to be replaced. Erica from GMC consumer management agreed that I should not have to keep having something replaced if it is not fixing the problem. The last time this was replaced was in June. Within two hours it was not functioning correctly. Now it is back. One minute I can use my seat belt and then next time I get in I don't get to. I recently phoned erica again to explain that this is a safety violation and that she need to contact me so that we could discuss options. To date my phone calls go unanswered. The laws demand that you wear a seat belt at all times but I can not do so with my GMC. Do I have to wait for death before this issue is taken care of. Winter is coming and it is unfair that my truck will sit in the garage on the days that I feel unsafe to travel without a seat belt. Why did I spend $42000 on an automobile that was suppose to keep me safe. What I feel is unfair is this bad treatment.

Without warning the seat belt retractor will not let the seat belt be pulled out. Dealer replaced the retractor twice. The consumer has been to dealer about 5 or 6 times for this problem. Manufacturer said it was a design defect.
The driver's side seat-belt would lock-up in the fully retracted position. Driver is unable to pull the seat-belt from the "locked" position. Must wait a few seconds/minutes before seat-belt will release itself so that the driver can put it on. The dealership I purchased it at (wagner-Buick GMC in belleville, IL) replaced the seat-belt at 5xxx miles and now they've put in a second one at 82xx miles today (8/11/03).
The driver's side seat belt locked, would not engage and the seat belt light illuminated on the dash. This was an intermittent problem. The seat belt was replaced on July 1, 2003.
