GMC Jimmy owners have reported 35 problems related to engine cooling system (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Engine system: oil cooling lines: oil ( dripping) loss first noticed November, 2010 at 90,000mi- drip became progressively worse over several weeks creating potential engine damage and fire danger. Oil cooler lines replaced first week January, 2011 at 94,000 miles. Replacement of the oil cooler lines has been a common and recurrent complaint for the 2000 GMC Jimmy--see: mycarstats. Com--since 2002.

Transmission failure / replaced transmission - upper & lower ball joint failure / replaced upper & lower ball joints - rear window wiper failure / inoperable at this point - extremely expensive replacements with no old parts available at this point. Events leading up to failure I can only attribute to severely poor manufacturing of products, there was no operating misuse or abuse. Also other parts that have failed and have since been replaced are the: alternator, fuel pump, fuel pressure regulator and cooling system failures.

2000 GMC Jimmy experienced a problem with the front right hub and the wheel speed sensor. The consumer was pulling into a parking space and the brake pedal became stiff and or would not activate. The consumer had run into a brick wall and bounced into traffic. The check abs system light had immediately illuminated. The consumer was then able to apply the brakes and backed into a parking space. The left front hub was replaced days before the consumer purchased the vehicle. The vehicle was also losing coolant. The consumer was informed that no coolant was in the vehicle.
Had to replace the oil cooling lines at 22,118 miles at the cost of $292. 29 on my 2000 GMC Jimmy. I have checked the web site for other complaints and there are several for this problem. I believe this should have been a recall by GMC.
My vehicle has two problems that I am aware of. There's heat coming from the floor heater while the heater is off, and it burns my feet. The other problem is that when I activate my left/right blinker my day lights go out, and sometimes when I'm driving my day lights are not activated. I have to play with my blinkers to make then come on. My car is still under warranty, but the dealership where I purchased this vehicle refuses to fix either problem. They told me that my car is designed this way.
Problems with my 2001 GMC Jimmy have been numerous including ignition switch, wheel bearings, clanking noise, roaring noise, windshield wiper failure, windshield wiper hose failure, battery, a/c, and so on. Currently, my vehicle clanks approximately 15 minutes after turning off the engine and my a/c does not work properly at all times. Dealership consistently says "there's nothing wrong" however I have had the vehicle for 2+ years and I know my car.
My 1996 GMC Jimmy began blowing cold air last winter. We had the radiator flushed and refilled with dexcool. The company told us the dexcool had turned to a sludge and damaged the thermostat. The thermostat was replaced as well. Six months later we have had to have the radiator flushed again because of overheating in the summer. Again the fluid had turned to sludge and we have to get the thermostat replaced again. It appears from what I have been reading that the entire system will have to be replaced soon because of these dexcool issues.

I have had to replace 1 upper ball joint and two lower ones , I was told my VIN number did not match for the recall listed on your site. I have also had to replace both of my oil cooling lines that started leaking badly, this is part of the towing package offered by GMC.
Vehicle only had approximately 37,000 miles on it and the wheel bearing and thermostat went out.
The coolant temperature gauge would rise and fall quickly in an erratic manner. Upon inspection the radiator was found to be full of a thick reddish substance. The mechanic said that this is a know issue related to the dex cool coolant. He also said that there is a TSB that instructs the mechanic to flush and replace the fluid. My complaint is with the oem for not informing me of the problem with the coolant. If I would have known of the problem, then I would have had the service performed before damaging my coolant system. The damage cost me about $2000 in repairs to replace the radiator, water pump and sensors.
Engine and engine cooling:cooling system. Engine coolant has broken down at 60,000 miles 10/1/2001, 70,000 miles 6/1/2002, 79,000 1/30/2003 and has became sludge. Owner's manual states 100,000 mile maintenance. Dealer (GMC)wants to replace thermostat, radiator, heater core at my expense. System has been super flushed, cleaned and new dex-cool coolant per dealer recommendations. Dealer even states coolant is bad. GMC states iit is my fault.
Coolant problems with 96 GMC Jimmy. Sludge in system. Plugged heater core. Coolant evaporation.
Oil leaking from timing cover and oil pan. I'm told gm knows of the problem, but is not doing nothing about it. Also had cooling lines leak, ac compressor failure, and others Jimmy 2000 GMC.
Reddish liquid leaking from under engine and engine appeared to be overheating, temperature needle going all the way up, then down, bad smell. Mechanic told me he has seen this problem with these vehicles before due to dex-cool used which gunks up the cooling system. Water pump had to be replaced due to the damage from this stuff. I was very disappointed in the response I received from the people from GMC who apparantly know about this problem and are doing nothing about for their customers.
The problem as described in bulletin #990602012d occured with my coolant system on the incident date. I had the whole system flushed and new coolant added. On 5/21/03, I had the coolant system flushed again and new dex-cool added. As of today's date 7/14/03, I noticed while having problems with my air conditioning, which may be related, that the dex-cool is almost completly emptied out of the over-flow. I think there is something significantly wrong with the coolant system and needs to be recalled!!! a 5-year antifreeze shouldn't only last 2 months.

The antifreeze gummed up and the cooling system had to be replaced. Gm is not taking responsibility for it. Mr.
Coolant has failed and is gelling up in engine. Gm has stated the coollant should last 5 years or 100000 miles. The coolant system now needs an acid flushh and repair parts which will cost $440. Gm states this is m=not a flaw , but the dealer states that it is only occurring in the Jimmy and chevy s-10 vehicles. They have received a serevice bulletin on how to deal with the problem.
Vehicle experienced oil leak due to faulty upper and lower cooler lines, serpentine belt was also replaced.
Heater started to fail at about 50,000 miles, no heat at all by about 80,000 miles. Have been told the heater core needs to be replaced; also have been informed that this is a common problem.
When towing my 3000lb travel trailer the engine will make pre-ignition noises and the check engine light comes on. Light will stay on for days afterward, then go off. Coolant was changed when I purchased it used because it was black. Within 25,000 miles it's black again.
Consumer states that the coolant looks like mud, cooling system was flushed, coolant leaking into right front floor, radiator and thermostat replaced, engine light illuminated, engine is noisy, tension belt and tensioner belt replaced, vehicle was overheating.
Vehicle overheats, then stalls at any speed/ any time. Dealer has flushed cooling system, did not remedy problem. Please add further details.
Engine coolant keeps disappearing, causing the engine to overheat. Dealership is not able to determine what is causing this problem.
No summary listed for above vehicle.
Water pump failed resulting in leakage. Mjs.
I have had my Jimmy serviced per the owners manual maintenance schedule and only at a GMC dealership, martin GMC in lake charles la. In January of 1999 the cooling system started getting a heavy build-up of rust deposits in the coolant reservoir and radiator. I brought it in to martin GMC on 1/21/99 (30,253 miles) and was told that it was caused by a break down of the dex-cool coolant in the system and that this was normal and would cause no problems later. I brought my Jimmy to and independent auto repair shop that same day and was told that the cooling system was badly rusted and it needed to be flushed and refilled. I brought it back to martin GMC and was again told that this rust was normal and would cause no problems. After this the Jimmy was serviced by martin GMC 3 more times in 1999. On 5/2/00 (43,773 miles)I brought the Jimmy in and had it serviced. I was told that the transmission level couldnt be checked because they were unable to get the dipstick out of the dip stick tube. The rubber/plastic gasket on the dipstick had heated and sealed to the metal dip stick tube. Soon after this, while driving the Jimmy, I started hearing loud water flowing sounds inside under the front dash. I brought it back to martin GMC 5/31/00 to have this checked out and was told that the cooling system was clogged with rust and needed to be flushed. They said that they believed the wrong type of coolant was put in the system causing this. I told them that I had made them aware of the rust problem long before now and that I believe that this rust problem also caused poor cooling of the engine which resulted in the problem with the dip stick.
The dealership had done all the service work since I owned the vehicle,at 47,000 miles the anti-freeze had the consistency of syrup and was clogging up. After much complaining the dealer pulled the radiator had it flushed and refilled. Approx. 30,000 miles later the same thing. They flushed and filled again. It's doing the same thing again in less then a year. They refuse to correct the problem. They informed me I had to pay for it myself. It was never corrected to begin with.
GMC/gm filled my Jimmy at the factory with dexcool. Dexcool is invasive and destructive to the vechicle I paid over 35 k for GMC/gm has sent service sheets to their dealerships with instructions to be followed exactly to purge the contamination from the cooling system. GMC/gm has hidden this problem because of the number of vechicles involved. GMC/gm has used the consumer as their scapegoat. Blammed the consumer for the 100,000 mile plus coolant they have used. Go to the internet explorer type in dexcool in search. Cooling system is the subject. . Read more...
Consumer recently had vehicle serviced concerning collant corrosion, consumer was advised that the reservoir for the collant was rusted and instead of an orange color it was a greenish color, therefore coolant had to be flushed out and new coolant added.
I noticed heater was not heating to full potential. Checked coolant and saw that the dextron orange coolant was a sludge type substance. I went to a shop to have radiator flushed and replenished with proper coolant. I was informed that the coolant inside radiator could not be replaced by the establishment and that it had turned into something that was not good for the engine. The establishment said they had turned away two other customers due to the same reason. Dextron orange could only be replaced by the dealership and that at 40000 miles left before replacement it should not look that way. I have talked to other GMC Jimmy and chevy blazer owners and they have had the same complaint. This seems to be a repeating complaint among these owners in my region. I request you investigate the dextron orange coolant that needs to be changed every 5 years or 100000 miles.
The GMC antifreeze keeps breaking down forming sludge so bad I had to replace the radiator . 6months later it happened again the dealer says that some one put the wrong antifreeze in the system my mechanic says that he has seen antifreeze mixed it it doesn't look like what keeps happening in my cooling system is any one else reporting this problem? my radiator has been repaired by the dealer once replaced by my mechanic once and system flushed. I with in the month had to replace the water pump the dealer did that repair and power flushed the system. It makes me wonder if this isn't a GMC problem like the time they filled the faulty cadilac engine blocks with stop leak to be able to sell them. GMC claims that this anti freeze is supposed to be god for 100000 miles what gives.
When both back windows are down and driving at approximately55-65 mph vehicle will shake and steering wheel will vibrate . There is no solution, but vibration will stop if all the windows are up or if all are down. Also, at only 48,000 miles rust is developing in cooling system possibly due to radiator . Dealer claims rust is normal, and that the cause is due to engine block. But, the engine block is made out of aluminum which does not rust.
Vehicle continuously overheats due to corrosion in engine that plugs up the radiator heater cord.
