GMC Jimmy owners have reported 10 problems related to engine exhaust system (under the engine and engine cooling category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Noticed a unusual odor coming from the engine area in late December, 2008. We took our Jimmy in for routine service (1/21/2009) it was recommended that the engine oil cooler lines were leaking and need to be replaced. We found out that the oil was dripping on the exhaust system causing the unusual odor. This could result in a fire and loss of vehicle or injury to the occupants if it was not noted by the dealer technician.

The contact owns a 2001 GMC Jimmy. The contact noticed that the on-board diagnostic system warning indicator would consistently illuminate on the instrument panel. The vehicle frequently misfired, which caused it to be inoperable. The dealer stated that he needed to replace the scpi fuel injector and the mass air flow sensors at the cost of $1,150. He is in the process of having the vehicle repaired. He called the manufacturer in reference to a voluntary recall for the state of California for 1996 to 2001 SUV's, but was not provided any assistance because the recall was not applicable for his state. The current and failure mileages were 72,000.

The engine continually misfires. There is a TSB bulletin #00-06-04-003b. Deposit buildup on popped valve ball &/or seat, causing it to stick. There is a recall because of this but only in California. I live in alaska. I got an estimate of $1200 bucks to fix this problem. Because of this, I only get 5-7 mpg, and have little power. Also, my abs light turns on and the abs activates at low speeds on dry ground. My electrical system is totally messed up. My right clicker just the sound not light) goes off when driving. It is completely erratic and unpredictable. My speakers turn off and on sporadically. My driver side seat adjuster broke off with little pressure. My steering wheel continuously pulls to the right. This many problems in a vehicle is ridiculous. What a lemon. Especially since I have seen the same exact complaints all over this sight about this specific vehicle.

My truck lost power and stopped running while driving on the freeway on the afternoon of 9-19-03. It was eventually towed to the dealer. Upon inspection I was told that nothing was wrong and that it ran fine. I was not convinced. On 9-22-03 it was determined that the truck needed a new catalitic converter and was driven in. I picked it up three days later. The next day the service light came on. I called the dealer and was told to bring it in. It was determined that the truck's computer needed to be updated. However the main computer was down and as such were not able to service it at that time. I was asked to return for reprogramming. The service light came back on on the evening of the 30th. I was not going to be able to bring it in to the shop until this week and in the meanwhile I was not driving it all that much. This past week end the service light came back on on Saturday. Sunday night (10-5-03) while driving home the truck lost power again (much like back on 9-19-03)and stopped running while on the freeway. I proceeded to pull over to the right shoulder. I tried to turn it back on but just made a rattling noise and then I heard a pop. About three-five minutes after my attempt to turn it on I smelled and saw smoke coming out of the front hood. I managed to get my dog and myself out. In less than three minutes that we got out of the truck it was up in flames. The fire department was called and came to take out the fire. Unfortunately for me my truck was destroyed.
The dealer knew about the defects to this vehicle and refused to fix them after receiving 3 separate estimates. 2 days after I repeatedly went back to the dealership to report these safety hazards the dealer continued to refuse to fix the problems and I had a car accident due to the defective vehicle. The dealer compliance board has a current case against the dealer and he has only agreed to take his vehicle back. The dealer has requested the damage from the motor vehicle accident not be fixed by the insurance company. The damage prior to the sale was so extensive from water or flood damage that the engine is completely ruined. It will not pass emissions. My fear is that the next unsuspecting consumer will be deceived by this dealer and this vehicle and I believe the next person will not be as lucky. I should be dead right now. The airbag never deployed and I believe it should have, which may also indicate that their is also something wrong with the airbag system. There may not even be an air bag in this vehicle even though it states there is one. This dealer will get this vehicle back and I am sure that instead of selling it as a salvage vehicle he will again slap a price tag on it and re-sell it immediately without fixing it. Dt.

Vehicle has non-engaging transmission as at times it will not shift though it is an automatic and sometimes it starts out in 2nd and then drops down to 1st. Service engine soon light illuminated on 3 occasions as there were emissions problems. Front end makes constant popping noise. Problem has been lubed on 3 or more occasions as well as coil springs have been replaced and lubed. Brakes went completely out while trying to stop at an intersection. There was a rupture in the brake booster.
Ignition switch failed three times, causing vehicle to automatically shut off. Consumer states that engine soon light illuminates, driver?s window motor failed and window will not go up or down, all dash lights and gauges will stop working, muffler has hole in it and makes loud noise, muffler and pipe exhaust system replaced, and when crank sometimes backfires and shifts hard, servo making bang shift, installed servo and 2 synolids.
