Automatic Transmission Problems of GMC Sierra - part 2

At 42,000 miles truck needed a new transmission and at 66,151 miles truck needed a new motor.

Abs system fails on panic stops. Suddenly applied pedal presseur locks brake pedal and provides little or no braking for approximately 1 second. I have been told by the dealership's service department that this is typical of all abs and that I need to train myself not to jam the brakes in an emergency. Vehicle was in shop in Dec. 1999 for transmission repair and brakes were supposed to be checked. No check was noted on repair order, but service manager assured me that the mechanic had test driven the vehicle and it was ok. This problem seems to be a result of abs pump overreacting to suddenly applied pedal pressure and locking the pedal with back pressure before braking actually starts. I feel that the brakes should at least chirp the tires first. Currently vehicle is under repair from accident, but it will be taken to another dealership upon completion of this repair.

Periodically transmission would skip a gear, causing engine to overrise. Please provide addt'nl information.

Problem only occures when engine and transmission are completly warmed and transmission is in overdrive mode. If transmission is in drive "3" no problems occur at any engine speed. Dealer states on repair order, "normal condition at this time until an update comes out". Suggestion was made by dealer that this could be caused by tourque converter.

I complained to GMC directly about abs failure and reported it to atty. Gen of nys. I was told its normal wear in states with salt, funny that the paint is good to this day.

When accelerating fast, must let off of throttle so transmission will shift from 1-2, and 3-4 gears. All fluid and filter were changed, problem not fixed.

When attempting to pass another vehicle on an incline at speeds of 55mph to 65mph the transmission shifts into second gear and revs the engine up to 4500 rpms and doesn't increase the speed because it is running at its peak speed in second gear causing me to have to let up on the accelerator and try to get back behind the vehicle I was trying to pass. This same downshifting also occurs when using the cruise control. The dealer did not want to test drive the vehicle on a similarly inclined road to duplicate the problem because he didn't have another vehicle like mine to compare it to. The defect in this transmission could easily put me in a head accident situation and needs to be addressed immediately.

Bumps into gear, engine check light, transmission overflow drips, power steering pump needs replacing.

While driving about 25 mph with an automatic transmission gear won't shift between speeds.

On 12/13/99 when slowing down to make a left turn, the tourque converter locked up and stalled the truck in middle of traffic while crossing the left lane. With difficulty, truned the wheel back to the right and pull off the road and shifted into park and restarted the truck. Luckly there was very little on coming traffic. On 2/11/00 while coming into a rolling right hand turn and going about 15 mph, I started to brake and the tourque converted again locked up and the engine stalled. Again with difficulty I was able to steer into the corner and make the corner. As the truck was free rolling it just started itself and it contiuned on, almost crached into two cars waiting at the stop sign. If my wife was driving there would have been a collision. In October when waiting for a traffic light to change, I accellerated and truck didn't move. I stepped on the brake shifted to park and then back to drive and it finally went into gear and moved. Have been back to the dealer twice with tourque converter concerns with no solutions. Gm has a transmission problem with there 4l60e transmissions. My 1998 GMC jimmy has been replaced at 19000 miles. Am very worried that this will happen at any time when not ready and an accedent will happen.

It apprears that the transmission is defective . Vehicle less than four years old. Vehicle had to be towed to service station.

Transmission hard shifts from 1-2nd after driving for several miles. I can turn off the ignition and this will solve the problem for about 10 miles. Then it will start shifting hard again. Engine light is on. Dealer couldn't diagnose the problem.

Automatic transmission/ overdrive malfunctioned, causing an abrupt forward jump from 1st to 2nd gear which may cause a crash. Please provide further information.

Trans started shifting very hard. Once in high gear operated well. Dealer would not look at it under warranty even though 1yr 10 mos. Old due to over 36000 miles by less than 2000.

Date is approximate, have since had problem with same model transmission on another 1997 truck.

Transmission - harsh upshift 2-3 & 3-4, been at dealers 3 times to no avail.

While driving the vehicle experienced sudden acceleration at a high speed without prior warning which almost resulted in an accident. Was able to stop the vehicle with the brakes. Also, dealer replaced the transmission.

The transmision has a harsh shift almost as if the engine mis-fires as it changes from gear to gear. Cronic has reset the electronic memory valves with no results. I am now being smoothed over by them because I don't believe they know of anything else to do. I trust that a GMC truck, number one in my book, this expensive would perform more smoothly than the competitor's truck (Ford,which outshifts GMC hands down) would. Transmission burned up.

While driving at 15 to 20mph, or 30 to 40mph, the transmission is making a clunking sound and vehicle is jerking. Cause unknown.

Consumer was downshifting from 5th to 4th and vehicle went into reverse.

Leaks in transmission.

While driving vehicle transmission stopped shifting, also odometer/speedometer stopped working. In addition, the abs light came on while driving. Cause has not been determined.

When vehicle was stopped on an incline with gear placed in park before engaging parking brake the transmission locked in park. In order to unlock it the consumer had to have the tow truck pull the vehicle in order to unlock it. The manufacturer advised that this was normal operation. Truck is a 2003 GMC 1/2ton 4-wheel drive pickup.

Truck jammed on brakes and shifted into reverse with no warning due to the ecm (brain) malfunctioning. Please describe details.

Transmission will not go into reverse. The dealer and manufacturer will be notified.

When starting vehicle while in park, it will completely shutdown. Cause unknown. Please give any further details.

Truck was drove about 300 miles at highway speed , shut off for 1 hour and drove thru town , stopped at a red light ,proceeded to take off when light turned green, engine reved up but the truck just sat there and did not move. ,I verified truck was in drive snd shifted thru the gears d,3,2,1,2,3,d,n,r,p,r,n ,d engine reved but truck would not move. I turned off engine and restarted ,put it in gear engine reved then the truck started to move as if everything was normal. Truck now has 13k miles and the problem has not repeated,bet I have heard of several other 1999 & 2000 chevy and GMC trucks with the same problem. I beleve this could be a serious defect that could cause injury to occupants or others.

The transmission violently shifts into gear upon acceleration from a stop or slow speed. This problem has occurred as many as ten times since the original date of purchase. On may 4th it occured so violently that the passenger in the rear hit his head on the rear window. In this incident the shift was so hard the rear wheels left the ground(all 4) and then the truck lurched forward. This is a serious defect that could caused harm to those inside the truck and could harm other drivers or pedestrians. The truck seems to go to a neutral operation even though you are in drive then when the rpm"s icrease to above 2,000 it suddenly shifts. I have taken the truck to the dealer 5 times and recently completed arbitration to take the truck back. The GMC represenitive claimed that this was normal for a "heavy duty" transmission such as the allison. The best discription of the problem is it feels as if you have been hit from the rear by another vehicle at 15-20 mph.

The transmission has a problem that causes the truck to lurch forward just after coming to a complete stop. The lurch can be quite strong causing the vehicle to jump forward in excess of a foot. The lurch occurs at unpredictable times and without warning. The best description I can offer is that it feals as if the vehicle has been hit in the rear by another vehicle. It has occured at least 6 times on various occasions.
