GMC Sierra owners have reported 20 problems related to differential unit (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Vehicle was parked on icy driveway (5 degree angle). In park. Vehicle was found at the bottom of driveway against a tree. The wheels were turning and not skidding as proven by treads in the snow. I believe one of the rear tires may have slipped and somehow the opposite disengaged and allowed it to continue backwards. This happened with my 2002 GMC Sierra. The explanation I was given is the differential senses a slip and the other side engages allowing it to turn but if there is a slope the vehicle weight allows it to keep rolling down hill. If someone is behind the vehicle they could be injured or pinned between another object. You can park one on an icy drive and nudge it and it will begin rolling backwards. There should be a pronounced warning of this or an engineering solution.

I purchased a 2012 GMC Sierra denali from stahl motors in monterey, CA in February of 2015. They are not willing to pay for the damages to my truck even though they sold me a completely dangerous vehicle, which I will explain. My truck didn't feel right as I was driving so I decided to take it to a shop to get looked at. There is a long list of things that is wrong with the vehicle, but I will mention just the main ones. The truck was sold to me without the rear brakes hooked up. The brake lines for the rear calipers were capped off by the rear differential. When the mechanic shop discovered that, they also discovered the master cylinder was completely dry, which caused damage to my front brakes. There was no cross member underneath the vehicle from frame to frame. It was torched out, therefor leaving zero support for the frame of the truck as well as the front differential. Which needed to be rebuilt caused from excessive movement left to right. Front differential needed to be rebuilt caused from the damage of no cross member in place. Ball joints were also affected (about to pop out of control arms) due to wrong parts installed in front suspension of vehicle.

Gas tank gauge works once in a while. Our mechanic said it was probably due to moisture. Also, the rear differential cover is either cracking or rusting through. I put a new gasket on it and the next day it was leaking again but not at the gasket. About 1/3 up from the bottom, you can see where fluid is leaking through the cover. I called 2 dealers (1 Chevrolet, 1 GMC). They both gave me numbers to other dealers (1 in PA. , 1 in IA. , 1 in upper mi. ). The two out of state dealers told me that the part was for a customer and would not sell it. The one in mi. Also said that, in addition to "that must be a popular part, because I've had every dealer in the country call me. " is this part a defective piece?.

2005 GMC Sierra slt VIN #1gtek19b25z238042 I drove the truck 237 miles home and noticed it was not operating properly. I called GMC to resolve the problems. The truck has binding in the front axles, brakes, or differential. This causes the truck to understeer heavily as the truck works to turn the front wheels over the road surface. This also makes the truck difficult to steer, u turns are especially a problem, the truck has sluggish acceleration and stays longer in the lower gears. The rear tires are prone to lose traction due to the increased rolling resistance from the front wheels, braking performance is compromised, the truck will sway back and forth at highway speeds as the rolling resistance of the front wheels varies from side to side. The truck tends to pull to the left, and the suspension is always preloaded from the additional stress. The engine labors to maintain speed on level ground with the vehicle unloaded. On occasion the front wheels will hop off the pavement as it is easier for them to compress the suspension/torsion bars than be turned over the road. It is difficult to maintain a straight line with the truck since the front wheels tend to follow the contours of the road. The front wheel assemblies make a low frequency sound when driving. The transmission, engine, and drivetrain components are always loaded and driving on snow or ice would be treacherous since the front wheels would stop turning on the low friction surface. Driving in the rain is bad enough and the rear wheels tend to break loose. The transmission has behaved strangely, stuttering on occasion as it tried to find the proper gear, it has slipped or freewheeled as I went to accelerate from a stop. The wrong oil filter was installed, the air cleaner is loose and rattles in the engine compartment. The power steering provides little or no assist and requires more effort than I have ever experienced from a vehicle that is supposed to have power steering.

I have a 2003 GMC Sierra pickup. My problem is the transmission does not work properly. I had 150 miles on the vehicle when the trans blew, now a clunkling noise every time the vehicle shifts. Gm calls this a downshift clunk noise and has issued a TSB requesting dealers not to attempt repair. This is a loud clunk which slams into the differential. I have contacted gm to no avail etc runaround. Is there any place to get help for me and possibly many others?.

Truck drive train makes clunk noise when I first start off from a stop, also in reverse. When I stop at a red light it feels like someone just hit me from behind. It started at about 39000 miles and has been getting progressively worse and now it has worn out the bushing in the tail shaft of the transmission ,wow $32000 dollars for this truck and nothing but problems . I am truly scared of this truck please help.

I own a 2003 GMC Sierra 1500 z71 off road truck. I've had it in the shop four times now due to the same problem. The problem consists of excessive play/backlash in the rearend/differential according to the dealer. This excessive play/backlash is causing the truck to jerk after shifting from first to second and second to third gears. The dealer and manufacturer say this is normal according to gm specs. At one point, while sitting at a traffic light, I proceeded to accelerate after the light turned green and the truck didn't go anywhere, but after a few seconds the truck slammed into gear and spun the rear tires. This problem seems to have been corrected after replacing the transmission control solenoid for now, but the constant jerking of the rearend/differential seems to be worsening. When discussing this problem with the dealers service manger and now finally with the general manger, they still say this is normal and has been for all 2000 through 2004 GMC Sierra's. That's interesting, because I owned two 2000 GMC trucks in the past and neither one of them experienced these problems.
I own a 2003 cmg 1500 4x4 when I had 300 miles on vehichle I noticed a vibration in the drivetrain. I took to dealer, they adjusted tire air pressure. 2nd time in they changed bearing in front differential, 3rd time in they changed front differential carrier, this got rid of vibration, I still have a concern that the carrier come as a shell so it still has original ring and pinion. Don't no if this will create a problem later or not but gear patern must have changed.
On may 31st, the rear end differential assembly exploded sending the pinon thru the housing and the rear axle caught on fire. The truck was in the shop (perry cheverolet, inc. , columbia, mo)until 6-9-03. When I arrived in bozeman, mt on 7-2-03 I was having problems with the wiring. There was a fire when I plugged the RV electrical plug into the truck's trailer plug. There was also a blown rear tail light bulb. In bozman, they replaced the complete wiring harness, the tow receptacle and 2 fuse kits. It was the opinion of the shop in bozeman (j. C. Billion, GMC) that the wiring damage was part of the original fire and differential assembly damage. Although GMC paid for my out of pocket expenses and for the waranty work, I am left to wonder what will happen next and just how safe am I going to be in this truck? I selected a truck bigger than what I needed at the current time, thinking that if I replaced my travel trailer in the future, I would not have to trade trucks also.
Ratcheting or grinding noise under med accelleration sometimes on right turns. Possible pinion gear bearing. ??.

There was a large "booming" noise coming from vehicle everytime consumer drove it. This noise occurred when pulling away from a stopped position. Consumer took vehicle to dealership, and they greased differential. He was told this would correct the problem. Consumer still experienced the problem dealership said that there was nothing more they could do. Please provide any additional information/attachments.

There is and has been an engine knock since 7/2000, has been in shop 6 times for same problem, GMC contends carbon knock, getting worse. Idles rough, told by dealer and GMC it is a characteristic of vehicle. GMC says they will continue to hornor warranty. What happens when warranty exprires, and the piston comes through the block. Drivetrain hestiates when in gear.
The rear rotors u-joint, carbon build up on throttle, replaced window motor uses 2 qts of oil every 400 to 500 miles , transmission uses 1 qt of oil every 20000 miles , air conditioner fan does not work on high I believe the throttle build up is a safety issue with the gas petal sticking. We have a lemon.
Rear differential is leaking.

C1500 differential over heated & failed while towing a 5,000 lb RV. 2nd differential failed after only 100 miles of replacing the 1st differential.
Consumer states he has been to the dealerhsip on several occasions to complain about the transmission slipping, it was finally determined that the differential was put in wrong, and also the driveshaft was replaced to alleviate the vibration.
Vehicle makes a thumping noise due to defective rear differential locking unit.
When hitting a bump there was a very loud noise coming from the rear end. Truck was taken to a dealership. Dealership's opinion was that the noise was coming from a dfective ring and pinion in the rear axle. Owner was told that GMC was aware of the problem. GMC did not know what was causing this problem, and was working on a solution. Problem has not been corrected. The front seat belt squeak and has excessive tension. Rear seat latch malfunctions. Under hood light malfunctions.
