I was driving approximately 25-30 mph coming over an overpass moving into the right hand lane when my truck right front end failed. The steering and brakes locked up for approximately 50’ until I hit the curb for the sidewalk and stopped. I safely exited the vehicle checked the left side of my truck for damage and didn’t find anything. I walked around the back of my truck and came to the passenger side where I found my right front wheel and tire completely broken away from both upper and lower control arms, the ball joint broke and failed as well as the brake line. If I was driving on the highway at 65-75 this catastrophic failure could have resulted in a fatal collision. The night before my [xxx] daughter and I returned from her outdoor ed trip in sausalito and we drove an hour home to napa on [xxx] and [xxx] . I thank god this didn’t happen with her in the car on the highway. I had my truck towed to jimmy vasser chevy in napa so I can see if the extended warranty will cover the repairs since it was an obvious catastrophic failure of the whole right front end. It’s still sitting there. The extended warranty inspector came Friday to take pictures of the damage information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

The contact owns a 2021 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated while driving at slow speeds and accelerating out of the neighborhood, the vehicle experienced a loss of automotive power, with the check engine and eps warning lights illuminated. The contact was able to drive the vehicle back to the residence. The vehicle was then towed to a local dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed, and the contact was informed that the engine had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 103,000.
I just left the gas station from getting a beverage, I got onto the interstate and had gone roughly about 3 miles before setting super cruise a few minutes after that the interstate takes a turn to the left with an exit on the right. Slightly right as I was just getting into the turn my engine shutoff and or died making my truck uncontrollable causing me to drive off the interstate into some small trees between the exit and the interstate. I was not injured and no other vehicles were involved. My truck is currently at the insurances storage yard and they care claiming it to be totaled. I have contacted gm and filled a claim however they are saying they aren’t responsible because the insurance company has my truck. I feel like regardless of who has my vehicle the manufacturer should be responsible if the issue pertains to a specific recall that has already been issued 2 weeks after my accident. I have contacted several lawyers but since I wasn’t injured they aren’t interested in taking my case. My concern is I’m getting screwed over financially because my truck was only a year old and now my insurance is going to be crazy expensive when the manufacturer should be the one taking responsibility for this and not myself.

While driving my truck and making low speed turns the dashboard (including center console) cuts off, along with my power steering. The truck has also shut off completely making u-turns causing me to almost crash. This also happened while driving around 60mph on the freeway, the entire dashboard went out, loss of steering, and truck shut off, almost causing an accident. When it does happen, it will cut out in 1 second intervals and steering will work again for 2 seconds then cut out again for 1 second, this causing me to stall. There are no check engine lights, or service lights that stay on. However, I will get a message stating: you are memory setting 3 in the system (wording may be different). In some cases the stabilitrak light will come on, the park assist warning stating it shut off comes on dash, and trailer break. I have a full service aul warranty and had vehicle checked at certified dealership and no codes were recorded. I replaced battery and the problem is still happening. This is unsafe and should be part of the previous recall as my symptoms are the same exact symptoms as the other 2018 recall.

I bought this new vehicle from diamond Chevrolet in auburn, MA, in November 2024. The truck currently has approximately 10,000 miles on it. On two separate and distinct instances, the truck suffered a complete loss of power steering while driving on the highway. In both instances, the issue persisted until I turned the vehicle off. Numerous warning indicators were illuminated on the dashboard (service power steering, drive with care, service esc, etc). A loss of power steering is a significant safety defect, and it was hard to steer the truck at lower speeds. The dealership and general motors were able to replicate the issue and replace the entire power steering rack during the first instance of power steering loss. Currently, the vehicle is still being diagnosed by the dealership and general motors for the current yet similar issue. The issue is intermittent but poses a significant public safety risk to the consumer and general motoring public.

The steering assist fails, power and steering is reduced at driving speeds. Steering wheel locks and vehicle looses voltage and stalls while driving at low speeds and have been close to collision. Vehicle was inspected by group one GMC in el paso texas. They did not fix recall because it "did not pertain to my VIN" . There is a recall for the steering assist on all GMC 2015 1500, but not for my GMC 2015 1500 for some reason. Whether it was manufactured in the us or the moon its still a GMC 2015 1500 with faulty steering assist system from the manufacturer with an open recall. Thanks for your help.

Driving in town going 20mph and the truck shut down not allowing for braking or gas and the steering locked up. Placed the vehicle in neutral, shut the truck off and turned it back. Was able to continue driving. Attempted to have the dealership we bought it from run a diagnostic and the battery was replaced but it continues to shut down at random times. Took the truck to a local auto shop after this happened again, another diagnostic was run, I am waiting the report to confirm what was done.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? rubbing noise when turning the steering wheel. Truck has 8800 miles on it. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? wasn’t able to fix on day diagnosed need to order parts. Only vehicle I have. When asked if I can continue to drive I was told if a problem arises to stop?!? has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes. They confirm there is a steering gear issue. Parts in order. Was told it’s a big deal and will need it for several days to fix. 8800 miles on truck! has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others?no were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? no warning lamps. Noticed it when turning into my garage at lower speeds.
The contact owns a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the transmission would downshift, and the vehicle was aggressively shaking while idling and while depressing the brake pedal. While driving approximately 35 - 40 mph, the electronic stability control (esc) service message was displayed, and the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact was able to pull over to the side of the road, the vehicle was turned off for a while and then restarted to continue driving. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, who diagnosed that the crankshaft, bearings, and tie rods needed to be replaced due to engine failure. The engine was rebuilt and the vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 86,636.
While driving at low speed the power assisted steering quit working. I could steer but with great effort. Drove two blocks home. Shut it off and restarted. Everything was fine after restarting. I’m afraid to drive the vehicle after this experience.

I went to start my truck after going into the store and the service power steering esc warning came on and I had no power steering. This is a very dangerous situation without power steering in the vehicle and someone is bound to get seriously injured if this happens while they are driving. I have read numerous threads on this same issue and it does not look like gm has taken this into accounty by recalling all these vehicles with this same exact issue. While most complain that when they take it to the dealership, they cant find any error codes, or when the replace the modules it starts creating more issues with other electronics. Gm needs to take care of this issue with the power steering module so the safety of their drivers is not compromised.
On a normal trip to work the dash light lit up then gave me these warnings. Service esc, service trailer brake, brake system failure-62 mph top speed, steering assist reduced. Dashboard lights that were on, abs check engine, brake, traction control. When I tried to slow down the power assist was gone on the brakes, I had a little braking when I pushed the pedal all the way to the floor as hard as I could, when I went to turn the wheel was hard to turn. I have had no issues like this before. After I managed to stop and turn off then on the vehicle everything came back expect for a warning to service the trailer brakes and the check engine light was still on. It all cleared after a few more restarts. I got the truck to the dealer 4 days later and they said it was the battery going bad even though I was not having any problem starting the vehicle, I had them replace the battery. I am unsure if the problem is resolved, time will tell. What I am sure of is if my daughter had been driving the truck, she would not have had the strength to get the brakes to work or turn the wheel, she would have had a accident for sure.
I purchased my 2022 GMC sierra XLT in February of 2022. I have had it in the shop 4 times for recalls. They couldn’t or didn't put an inspection sticker on the truck because I honestly don’t think it could have passed inspection. The truck sounds like a truck on transformer when I turn it off breaking town like a robot. On yesterday which was 1/27/2025 while backing up to turn around the truck started dragging in the back like the breaks locking up, the same thing happened while turning into my driveway off a state highway with an 18 wheeler coming. GMC can’t look at the truck until February 10! this truck was purchased new and it’s been nothing but trouble. Electrical system goes in and out steering assist reduced drive with care, engine power reduced, park assist on then off and truck making unusual noise. I waited 13 years to finally get another brand new vehicle and this what I ended up with. My last new vehicle was a 2004 Honda pilot. I had 459,000 miles on the truck no engine or transmission issues. I donated the truck to goodwill. Therefore, I hope GMC understands my frustration when my daughter’s 2019 kia optima is out performing my 2022 GMC XLT truck. The back breaks are dragging and locking up, it appears the gears are getting stuck and I can’t back the truck up or go in reverse without the struck staying stuck, then jerking vigorously and problems with the wheel turning to the right the truck get stuck or stall!.
On 01/07/2025 I got in my truck to take it to GMC for an oil change and 75,000 mile service. When I began to drive I noticed I could barely turn the truck at all. The power steering was not working. Then a warning popped up to have the power steering serviced. The GMC dealership is an hour from my house. The entire drive the power steering didn't work. I explained what was going on to the GMC dealership and when they went to look at the truck the power steering was working again. When I left the dealership the power steering was working. I stopped at a friends house for about an hour and when I went to leave the power steering was not working again. I ended up having to drive an hour again with no power steering and made an appointment with GMC to get the power steering looked at. Currently they haven't commented on the power steering function but rather that there is a gear needing to be replaced in the steering column. Upon looking online it shows "several model years of GMC sierra trucks have been subject to a recall for intermittent power steering issues related to electrical glitches within the eps system. " however, my truck seems to not be on this list of affected vehicles but there is no other explanation of why this is happening with my truck and GMC has not commented on why it is happening but it is extremely dangerous.
Incident 12/29/2024 while making a stop at a stop sign while making a left turn steering wheel broke free with no resistance what so ever??? turned off the vehicle opened the hood discovered the intermediate steering shafts had separated??? retaining bolt missing causing shafts to slip out of each other, putting my life & passenger's at high risk how this happened there is no explanation to this factory defect.
Subject: safety complaint regarding steering airbag trim and steering axle issues dear national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA), I am writing to formally file a complaint regarding serious safety issues with my GMC vehicle. Specifically: 1. The steering airbag trim has begun to crack, which raises concerns about its structural integrity and potential interference with airbag deployment in the event of a collision. 2. The steering axle is making unusual noises due to loose bolts and worn bushings, posing a potential risk to steering control and overall vehicle safety. I recently took the vehicle to an authorized GMC dealership for inspection and repair. However, the dealership refused to address these issues despite their clear impact on safety and their apparent connection to manufacturing defects. Given the critical nature of these problems, I urge the national highway traffic safety administration (NHTSA) to investigate this matter thoroughly. These defects not only compromise the safety of the vehicle but also endanger the lives of the driver, passengers, and others on the road. Thank you for your attention to this matter. I am happy to provide any additional information or documentation required for your investigation.
The contact owns a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated while driving 45 mph, the low fuel warning light, the forward collision avoidance warning light, the check engine warning light and other unknown warning lights were illuminated. The message "steering assist reduced" was displayed. The contact stated that the vehicle lost motive power. The contact was able to pull to the side of the road. The vehicle failed to restart and was towed to the dealer to be diagnosed, but the dealer could not determine the cause of the failure. The contact stated that the failure recurred while driving. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was being diagnosed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact related the failure to NHTSA action number: pe25001(engine, engine and engine cooling) and NHTSA campaign number: 25v274000(engine and engine cooling). The manufacturer was notified of the failure and referred the contact to the NHTSA hotline for assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 20,000.
The steering wheel locked up with no warning while driving and truck shuts down and displays no power steering assist service. Erc warning twice in one week.
Front upper control arm ball joint separated from socket.
The contact owns a 2024 GMC sierra. The contact stated while the driving at an unknown speed, the instrument panel went dark as steering wheel became difficult to maneuver. The contact stated that he immediately drive to the dealer where several diagnostic codes were found such as power steering failure and the instrument panel needed to be replaced. the vehicle was repaired for the failure codes, power steering and instrument panel however the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken back to the dealer where the same repairs were completed however, the failure continued to occur. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and a case was opened. The approximate failure mileage was 10,200.
While driving on a two lane highway at approximately 60 mph the powersteering on my truck failed with warning lights on the dash. I limped it to a town where I could get it scanned and they could not figure out the issue. The issue was intermittent for a few days until it was non-stop. It took over a month to get the reconfigured part from gm to complete the repair, gm had to reconfigure the part to fix the issue I was having. A faulty powersteering control module was the probelm and it required replacement of the entire steering rack and alignment. Gm is aware of this issue clearly due to their choice to rework the affected part, but not issuing a recall in light of the issue to take full repsonsibility/reimburse customers that have suffered monetary damage due to their failure to propperly engeineer parts.
While driving and making a turn at slower speeds, such as parking lots or intersections, the entire dash cluster including the radio screen will go black. The steering will completely lock up and jerk back to the opposite direction. At the same time the park assist, stability control keeps flashing on and off. Sometimes the truck will shut off and then tell you to roll down the driver window and roll it back up. It is random and you never know when it is going to do it. The only fix I have found is to stop in the middle of the road and restart the truck. You can not drive off the road to do this because you cannot control the steering. I almost drove into oncoming traffic when it did this during a turn at an intersection. I have taken it to the dealership and they say then cannot duplicate it therefore don't know what the fix is. I have read multiple complaints on this on line. I have video but it is too big to send in this email.

The contact owns a 2017 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated while driving at 70 mph, the vehicle lost power steering functionality. The message "power steering failure" was displayed. The contact continued driving until he could safely pull over to the side of the road. The contact stated that he was able to pull to the side of the road by using physical force to steer the steering wheel. The contact then drove to the residence at low speed. The dealer was notified of the failure and informed the contact the vehicle was not covered. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.
While at highways speeds, the steering will not return to center while going/coming out of a curve. It acts as if the power steering system is failing or low on fluid but that is not the case. I’m aware of a current recall with the sierra but my VIN does not fall into the recall. The recall is for a software fix. GMC will not look into without charging me. This is a safety issue while driving. It holds the steering wheel in the turning position and I have to pull it to center.
Truck showed check engine light and popup message to service esc, vehicle disable traction control. Before being able to have the vehicle scanned for error codes (after sitting parked turned off for a while, all errors cleared. Several days later when turning vehicle on traction control warning light, parking break warning light, and stability control warning light all turned on, service esc message popped up again, prndl position indicator light turned off and vehicle began to have a clicking noise in the steering column when break was pressed. There is a multiple year long thread on this topic on the silveradosierra forum entitled "service-esc-and-service-power-steering" it appears that dealer and gm help are limited and the issue often goes away and recurs.
Getting shift to park safety warning, car is in park, and cannot move at all, cannot start because vehicle does not believe it is in park. Have been stranded multiple times on this error.
I am experiencing episodic loss of power steering assist without warning. This lasts for several seconds then power steering is restored. "stabilitrak” message may be displayed during the event. On one occasion my radio also went off when my power steering failed. On one occasion my vehicle died shortly after losing power steering which almost resulted in me having a motor vehicle accident. I reported the problem to the GMC dealership and have scheduled the next available appointment to have it serviced.

Rack and pinion went out and installed a new oem remanufactured one from gm directly. The dealership programmed it but it is facing the same issues for the steering going out at low speeds. The recall was already performed but on the old part. Gm program # n172085440 in the parking lot it goes out and I was driving and slowing down for a turn when the steering went out for 3 seconds going 15 mph then returned.
On [xxx], on or about [xxx], while leaving out the garage the steering wheel locked-up and would not turn unless exceptional strength was used. We immediately notified garlyn shelton in temple, TX dealer and had the 2017 GMC denali towed with aaa. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
Without warning power steering went out. Flashed code: service power steering; service esm and traction control light. After two restarts, went away like it never happened. I was backing a 24 ft trailer at the time of occurrence. There are numerous other people with the same problem in online forums. I cannot believe that there has not been a recall or even service bulletin regarding this problem. It is a major safety concern.
The contact owns a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while his wife was driving 25 mph, the vehicle made an abnormally loud sound and the front driver's side wheel detached. The vehicle came to a complete stop. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that the upper control arm had disconnected from the steering wheel ball joint, and it was determined that the upper control joint, steering wheel column, and front driver's and passenger's side wheel needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that the vehicle had received an alignment twenty days prior to the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
