I recently purchased a 2010 GMC sierra crew cab. The rear seat head restraints are inadequately and/or defectively designed, and will offer little protection to the rear seat passengers in the event of a rear end collision. The restraints are mounted on short posts, which do not extend high enough to offer protection to most individuals who are seated in the rear. The posts also do not lock in place, (like the front headrests) and simply slide up and down freely. I contacted GMC by letter, and requested that they modify or replace the headrests, but they refused, stating that the vehicle was designed to pass all federal safety standards. After doing some research, I realized that auto manufacturers are not required to install head restraints on the rear seats of passenger vehicles, and that the shape, size and location of the restraints continues to vary from vehicle to vehicle. It therefore appears that many vehicles, such as mine, offer inadequate head protection for all but the front seat passengers. Indeed, the protection is so poor in the sierra, that any front or rear collision will likely result in the rear seat passengers' heads colliding with the rear window, causing head trauma in addition to the cervical trauma sustained from the lack of head and neck support. I am quite disappointed that my vehicle offers such inadequate protection, and hope that the NHTSA will take action on the issue. The cost of installing adequate head restraints in all u. S. Vehicles surely outweighs the health care and human costs that are being borne by our consumers every time someone is injured due to a manufacturer's faulty or negligent head rest design. Until the NHTSA mandates such protections, auto manufacturers will have free reign to continue to skimp on consumer safety, and the u. S. Public will continue to suffer the consequences.
I have a 2002 GMC sierra z71 4x4 truck, regular cab with an 8 foot bed. It has 75000 miles. The problem I'm having is both of the outside door handles stick open a little after you pull the handle to open the door and get in. Now when you put the truck in gear, or start moving the doors lock automatically. When you stop and put the truck in park the doors automatically unlock. Now since the outside door handle is stuck slightly open the door won't unlock or open with the inside handle, you have to reach outside push the handle in then you can unlock and open the door. I have electric windows, and have to put them down to reset the outside handle. My concern is, if I was in an accident, and my windows were up, and my battery was damaged, and the truck lost electrical power I can't open the windows to reset the handle, so that I can get out? now I'm trapped in the truck!!.

Vertical plastic cover next to accelerator pedal. There is a vertical plastic cover of some type, on the right side of the accelerator pedal that the right side of the sole of my dress shoes gets caught on, delaying my foot from reaching and applying the brake pedal. These valuable milliseconds is going cause someone out there to get killed or seriously maimed.

At the first oil change in my new 2006 GMC sierra, I found pieces of
metal (assembly from the engine) attached to the magnetic drain
bolt. Such is usually symptomatic of a defective bearing or something. No problem as of yet with the vehicle, but registering this observation. For record purposes. The attendant at the place where I got the oil changed said my vehicle was the fourth one he's observed with the same kind of metal pieces.

Excessive rust from middle of under carriage on back lead part failures. One of two straps holding up gas tank, rear strap, broke and rear of gas tank dropped about 4 inches. I was not driving the truck, just noticed then gasped. I replaced the gas tank strap. Research on internet reveals excessive rust for these trucks is common. After hearing about the Toyota tundras dropping a spare tire due to excessive rust, I figure a part failure possibly leading to a dropping a gas tank qualifies too.
