Body Problems of GMC Sierra 1500 - part 1

While driving my 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 at4 at highway/interstate speed, the front upper grille molding/deflector unexpectedly detached from the vehicle. There was no collision or known impact immediately preceding the failure. I recovered the detached molding and inspected the vehicle afterward. Multiple molded attachment points on the back of the upper grille molding are fractured/broken. Several of the attachment retainers and mounting hardware remain attached to the vehicle. Photographs were taken of the detached molding, broken attachment points, mounting locations, and the vehicle after the incident. I have retained the failed part. I am aware of NHTSA recall 25v060 / gm safety recall n242490120 concerning certain 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles in which front upper grille deflector attachment points may fracture over time, potentially allowing the deflector to detach from the vehicle and become a road hazard. My vehicle is a 2023 model and is not currently included in that recall, but the failure I experienced appears similar to the failure described in that campaign. I am reporting this incident because the component detached while the vehicle was traveling at highway speed and could have struck another vehicle or created a roadway hazard. I request that NHTSA document and evaluate this failure and determine whether similar failures are occurring in 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by a dealer or manufacturer. There were no warning lights, messages, looseness, or other symptoms noticed before the molding detached. The failure occurred suddenly while the vehicle was in motion and created a potential road hazard for following motorists. The failed molding remains in my possession and is available for inspection. My vehicle is a 2023 model and is not currently included in recall 25v060 / gm n242490120, but the observed attachment-point fractures appear similar to the failure described in that recall.

The chrome grill deflector that was previously fixed under the gm recall (for the same part) broke off and flew into my windshield while driving on the freeway.

Driving vehicle at approximately 70 mph when a semi truck passed me going the opposite direction. The upper grille deflector / molding section of my front end grille blew off and landed into on coming traffic. I understand a recall was issued for the same problem on the 2022 models, but not the 2023 model.

A trim piece under my hood and above my grille on my 2023 GMC sierra slt 1500 flew off and over my windshield this morning during a heavy wind and rain storm. There was no previous damage to the front of my vehicle.

Upper bezel of front grille blew off driving down the hwy landing in oncoming lane of traffic. This is a known problem to GMC on late produced 2022 model year and issued a safety recall #xxx to replace the bezel and reinforce mounting points. I bought my 2023 GMC xxx and it was made in [xxx] so good chance it was made in 2022 and I could of had one of the faulty grilles. If not GMC still has a problem with upper grilles detaching while driving. I have talked to my dealer and GMC customer satisfaction with no help offered. I have bought a new grille and installed it. I own a 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 elevation. The front upper grille molding/trim has become loose and is separating from the vehicle. The attachment points/clips are no longer securely holding the molding in place. I am concerned that the molding could completely detach while driving, particularly at highway speeds, creating a road hazard for other motorists. The vehicle has not been involved in a collision or other event that would explain the failure. I have photographs documenting the loose molding and believe this is a potential safety defect that should be investigated.

The front upper grill broke and flew off the truck at highway speeds nearly causing a wreck. Zero previous damage. Simply broke at the connecting points without cause. . Pretty unreasonable for a 75000 dollar truck to have the upper grill just dislocate itself and nearly cause a major wreck at highway speeds.

The hood molding flew off my vehicle as I was traveling down the interstate. I did not hit anything, it just randomly flew off of my vehicle. The piece flew off and just barely missed the vehcile behind me. If that would of hit the other vehicle, it would of caused damage to their vehicle, and potentially could of caused an accident. The piece that fell off was the trim piece that is diretly below the hood latch and above the front grille. There was no incidcators that this was going to happen. I see there was a recall on the same model and year vehicle as mine but for chrome grilles. The recall # is 25v-060.

On September 11, 2026, while driving my 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 denali ultimate at approximately 70 mph on the buckman bridge (us 295 s), the painted upper grille/hood molding located between the hood and the top of the grille suddenly detached from the vehicle. Before I purchased the vehicle, it had sustained damage to the front fascia during transportation/shipping. As part of the repair prior to my purchase, the upper trim piece in this area was replaced by general motors. To my knowledge, the replacement was performed by gm as part of the pre-delivery repair. The vehicle had not been involved in a collision or impact prior to the failure while I owned it. The component detached while the vehicle was traveling at approximately 70 mph on a bridge and entered active traffic. I was unable to determine what happened to the component after it entered traffic or whether it struck another vehicle. At the time of the incident, I did not initially realize exactly which component had detached. I subsequently determined that the missing part was the painted upper grille/hood molding/front upper grille deflector. I am reporting this because I have since learned that gm issued safety recall n242490120 / NHTSA recall 25v060 for certain 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles involving the front upper grille deflector. That recall describes fracture of the attachment points and the possibility of the deflector completely detaching while the vehicle is being driven. My vehicle is a 2023 model, but the component and reported failure appear substantially similar. The failure occurred at approximately 70 mph and caused a large exterior body component to enter active traffic, creating a potential hazard to other motorists. I am requesting that NHTSA document this incident and investigate whether the defect addressed by recall 25v060 also affects 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles, including vehicles in which the upper trim piece had previously been replaced by gm.

I request that gm and NHTSA investigate whether recall n242490120 / NHTSA recall 25v060 was properly performed and effective, determine why the deflector detached, and assess whether improper installation, defective parts, inadequate fastening, impact, road debris, or another cause was responsible. Evidence and records requested please review or provide: • complete recall-repair records, including repair orders, technician notes, procedures, parts and fastening specifications, photographs, repair date and mileage, personnel identities, and attachment-point inspections. • an explanation for the discrepancy between the April 18, 2025 mygmc date and April 28, 2025 gm VIN-lookup date. • dealership inspection findings, photographs, measurements, and conclusions. • gm repair instructions, technical guidance, recall-validation records, and engineering analyses. • a written determination of the probable cause and whether this was a remedy failure, improper installation, defective part, unrelated damage, or unresolved cause. • criteria for determining whether the grille must be replaced or repaired. • warranty, goodwill, claim, technical-assistance, and customer-service records. • similar complaints, warranty claims, field reports, damage reports, and recurrence data. Corrective actions requested I request that gm identify the cause, determine whether the grille must be replaced, and assess whether the attachment can be repaired. If the incident resulted from the recall condition, repair, improper installation, defective parts, or failure of the remedy, I request no-cost repair or reimbursement, including grille replacement. If gm attributes the incident to unrelated damage or an external event, I request the supporting evidence and technical basis. I request that NHTSA determine whether additional oversight or corrective action is warranted to prevent recurrence and road-debris hazards.

I was driving down the george w. Bush highway in dallas, texas, and the front top bezel above my grill flew off and went over the top of my truck. I have no idea if it landed safely or damaged other vehicles behind me because I was in very thick traffic. This is extremely dangerous as I could injured people driving behind me potentially impaling someone as I was going 70 mph per the speed limit. Just both are being recalls on the 2022 GMC model of my truck. The dealership refused to fix this for me and quoted me over $500 to get this repaired.

I was driving home from family’s house 2 hrs away and got home late. When I got home I noticed the upper front grille assembly or top chrome trim piece for the 2024 GMC Sierra 1500 denali ultimate flew off at some point while driving. That could have caused an accident for others and myself but luckily no one is harmed.

My 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 was subject to gm safety recall n242490120 / NHTSA 25v060 for an upper grille deflector that could detach from the vehicle. The recall repair was completed by my gm dealership in June 2025. In late August 2026, while driving normally on the highway, the same upper grille deflector detached again in the exact manner described by the recall. There was no collision, impact, or other outside damage that caused the failure. I was able to retain the detached deflector due to my attentiveness however, it was close to detaching and either busting mine or someone else’s windshield. Upon inspection, the adhesive and retainers from the previous recall repair are still clearly visible, and the bonding appears to have separated. I have photographs documenting the failed attachment points and still possess the undamaged detached component for inspection. My gm dealership inspected the vehicle after this failure and determined that the front grille assembly should be replaced. However, because the recall is shown as previously completed, gm has stated that the recall cannot be reopened. Gm customer assistance offered only $251 toward a $1,673. 82 repair, leaving me responsible for $1,422. 82 to correct the same safety defect that the recall was intended to remedy. I am filing this complaint because the recall remedy appears to have failed, allowing the recalled component to detach from the vehicle again. A grille component detaching at highway speed could strike another vehicle or create a roadway hazard. I am concerned that other vehicles repaired under this recall may experience the same post-recall failure. I request that NHTSA review the effectiveness and durability of the remedy used for recall n242490120 / 25v060.

On August 22, 2026, while driving my 2022 GMC sierra westbound on state route 84 at highway speed, with strong westerly winds of approximately 35 knots, the front passenger-side wheel-opening molding/fender flare completely detached from the vehicle without warning. The detached molding struck the passenger-side exterior mirror and narrowly missed a motorcyclist traveling behind me. This created a serious safety risk because a substantial exterior component became a projectile at highway speed and could have struck the motorcyclist or another vehicle. There were no warning lights, messages, unusual noises, or other symptoms before the failure, and there was no known collision or impact preceding the incident. I did not initially know what had detached. After arriving home and inspecting the vehicle, I discovered the entire passenger-side front wheel-opening molding was missing. The detached component was not recovered. I reported the incident to my GMC dealer, which performs my regular service and warranty work. The vehicle was inspected on August 31, 2026. The dealer declined warranty coverage but, to my knowledge, did not determine why the component detached. Afterward, I inspected the corresponding driver's-side molding and found a substantial visible gap at its leading edge between the molding and vehicle body. Comparison with other GMC sierra vehicles of the same model showed their moldings appeared to sit substantially more flush. The vehicle and remaining molding are available for inspection, and I have photographs documenting the condition. The cause of the failure is currently unknown. I have escalated the incident to GMC customer assistance under case #109189284 and requested a product-safety review. I am concerned there may be an installation, attachment, or component-retention issue that could allow these moldings to detach while driving.

The upper chrome grille molding fractured at the clips and completely detached at highway speeds, creating a dangerous flying projectile. This is an identical material failure to NHTSA campaign 25v-060. The defective part or assembly process clearly extends into the 2023 model year.

While driving my 2023 GMC sierra at4 at highway speed, the front grille piece (gm part 84957848, roughly 3 feet or longer) detached from the vehicle without warning and flew off into the roadway. The piece landed on the shoulder rather than in a travel lane, but given its size, it could easily have struck another vehicle or caused a serious accident if it had landed differently. I was then forced to stop on the highway shoulder to retrieve the part, which put me in an unsafe roadside situation with traffic passing at highway speed. This part had all its retaining clips still intact, indicating a failure of the part/mounting itself rather than a missing clip or improper installation. Part number 86274905.

I have a rear sliding window on the cab of my truck that leaks from both ends of the plastic guide. I noticed it when placing my young children in their car seats. I contacted my dealership and was informed the repair would cost $1500+ and not be covered by gm or warranty.

The piece in front of the hood detached and flew off while riding down the highway.

The molding cover for the hood fell off by hwy speed, and recently we I went to oil change after I get the car the technician said the bolt for tie the oil thing is not correct and it’s not for this car and this was the reason for leaking and need to replace with right one.

The upper grill chrome trim blew off at highway speed. The plastic brackets holding it in place sheared off. This was a known defect resulting in 70,000 recalled trucks for the prior year model (2022), but for some reason isn't covered for 2023. Same exact issue.

Whilst driving down the highway at 65 mph the plastic front grill deflector broke off and slammed into my windshield and the vehicle behind me. Luckily the vehicle behind me sustained no damage other than how frightened she and her children were. This is a known issue and was subject to a recall for the 2022 GMC sierra denali's. Nothing has changed between the 2 models as far as I can tell and it's the exact same grill deflector. When I informed the dealership of this they told me it would be a $950 repair out of pocket. First of all, it is unacceptable for a $75,000 vehicle to have a plastic component that can just break off and become an immediate and unavoidable hazard on the highways. The recall must be extended to these vehicles. I have reached out to gm and they confirmed it would be an out of pocket expense, but I am escalating the situation. Thank you!.

The photographs show failed/broken attachment points while the molding was still partially attached to the truck. Later, while driving on [xxx] to work, the remaining attachments failed and the entire molding separated from the vehicle. The part could not safely be recovered from the interstate. The vehicle recently underwent dealer service involving the active grille shutter/damper area near this component. I cannot determine whether that service contributed to the failure, so I am reporting it as part of the vehicle's recent service history rather than asserting it as the cause. I subsequently became aware that NHTSA recall 25v-060 / gm recall n242490120 addresses separation of a front upper grille deflector on certain GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles due to fractured attachment points. My vehicle is a 2023 model and does not presently appear to be included in that recall. I started to notice detached broken plastic pieces behind the upper grill housing. I notified the dealer, and in the meantime of trying to figure out what to do, the upper grill housing came detached when I was driving down the highway and flew up and back onto the highway. Sounds similar to safety recall n242490120, which was for 2022 model year trucks. Not sure why this stopped at 2022, but it happed on my 2023.

August 5th, 2026, I was driving south on I-55 between hammond and ponchatoula at 70 mph when the top grill trim (bezel) flew off, hit (and cracked) the windshield, and landed somewhere behind my traveling vehicle.

My truck was serviced for the front chrome grill separation recall last year. On Saturday, 8/1/2026 while driving at highway speed the grill deflector separated from the vehicle violently. I was able to pull off of the highway and remove the part as only the passenger corner clip (with screw) was partially retaining the deflector. Upon looking at the "repair" or recall, the corrective action does not appear to have been done correctly per n242490120. The chrome coating was not scuffed let alone removed from the part and an insufficient amount of epoxy was used to attach this deflector. Damage was done to the hood and lower grill during this incident. I have had numerous and considerable issues with the purchasing/servicing dealership where I bought this truck.

The front grille bezel mounting clips broke and it started to fly off while driving on the highway. Luckily, I was able to pull over before the last clip broke and took it off before it became a spear flying at the cars behind me. There is an active recall for this issue for the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 models, but not 2023/2024 models (same body I believe).

While driving my 2023 GMC sierra on the highway at highway speeds, a piece of the front grille suddenly detached and flew off the vehicle. There was no prior accident, impact, or external damage to the grille; the part failed and unclipped on its own due to defective manufacturing or weak retaining clips. This creates a severe safety hazard as the flying debris could have struck the windshield of the vehicles traveling behind me, potentially causing a major accident. I am aware that the 2022 GMC sierra has an active recall (n242490120) for this exact same issue, yet gm is refusing to cover this 2023 model under warranty or recall despite presenting identical component failure.

The grill deflector flew off while driving on the highway. I was driving roughly 55 mph. It is available now, but will be getting repaired in the near future. My concern is that it appears that this was an issue with the 2022 models and it’s still an issue on the 2023. The safety issue is if there was a vehicle or motorcycle behind me that it could have harmed whoever could have been driving behind me, caused and accident, or damaged their vehicle or mine in the process. The service advisor (j. R. ) told me that “sometimes the wind gets underneath the bezel and makes it snap”. No it has not been inspected by any of this mentioned. No warning signs prior to the incident.

The upper grille trim piece came off while driving down i20 between hudson oaks and willow park. I was doing between 60-65 mph. It could’ve hit other vehicles behind me, or to the side of me. This piece is a known issue and the 2022’s have a recall but not the 2023 model years. No signs of this being about to break.

While driving at highway speed in normal traffic, the upper front grill deflector detached from the vehicle and struck the windshield, cracking the windshield. This appears consistent with the defect that is the subject of safety recall n24290120.

The upper hood trim that sits above the grill, flew off on the interstate at approx 80 mph. Upon research this is a common problem for this make and model in years of 22-24. Gm has a service bulletin for this issue as well as the NHTSA. For this particular failure. There was no warning and when I contacted gm they were unwilling to assist as "service bulletins" are not recalls and the vehicle is out of warranty. There was no warning, no indicator, it just blew off and I had no idea until I got home and the piece was missing. I was unable to locate the part on the interstate, however I was able to keep all of the pieces attached to the vehicle for evidence and support. I am beside myself anyone thought this was acceptable to sustain the force of air flow!.

My 2026 GMC sierra has an oil-canned roof from a touchless car wash because the sheet metal lacks structural rigidity. This caused the roof to buckle and caused a permanent fold in the roof of the truck. There is already documented issues for this exact problem on the newer GMC canyons and Chevrolet colorado mid-sized trucks. Bulletin for reference NHTSA official TSB #23-na-209 pdf. I leased the vehicle on 6/19/2026 and this happened on approximately 7/7/2026. The vehicle only has 1,480 miles on it as of this date.

My grill deflector suddenly flew off, hit my windshield a flew into a semi hauling oil field equipment. We both pulled over and found no significant damage to his truck. I have a two inch scratch on my windshield and possibly lite hood scratching. Dealership required me to pay $390. 73 but said I would be reimbursed for my losses. It never happened. Now I’m fighting with gm to get some resolution. This could be deadly for a motorcycle rider for sure. Hundreds of people reporting same issue on 22 and 23 sierras and at4’s.
