2003 GMC Sierra 2500 hd ext. Cab, 8-ft. Box. In cooler weather, fall, winter, spring, the gauges malfunction. That is, the speedo and tach read wildly high or don't activate at all, and the other gauges all are non functional. This is intermittent and is apparent when starting on cold mornings. So far, symptoms have disappeared in warmer temps. It has occurred every year. There is an advisory, but GMC won't act on my word, must see it.

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 hd. While the contact was driving between 55-60 mph, smoke expelled from the instrument panel and air vents. The vehicle was driven to the side of the roadway. The engine was turned off. The contact waited several minutes before restarting the engine. The vehicle resumed operation without the smoke failure. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired for the malfunction. There was a recall on the 2006-2009 GMC sierra models, the NHTSA campaign id number was 10v24000 (electrical system). The contact experienced the identical failures as mentioned in the recall defect. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

I own a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500hd pickup. The speedometer on this vehicle is starting to go bad and when I am driving down the highway it will gradually loose indicated speed and then eventually go to zero. I am aware that there is currently a recall out for this type of problem, but I had my vehicle in the shop and for some reason my VIN # does not fall into the recall list so I have not got it repaired at this time. The recall document that I found is #07187c: special coverage adjustment - instrument panel cluster gauge needle function -(Mar 20, 09), my question is that does your agency update this list frequently or once it is out that is all that will be covered?.
2004 GMC sierra slt duramax 2500hd. 92,000 miles. Well -maintained. With no warning speedometer read forty miles too low. We thought we were entering the freeway at 60, while in fact we were going 20. We almost got rammed by a truck. It is illegal to go 20 on an interstate. This required speedometer cluster replacement costing $529. Gm refused any coverage of the cost. I suggested they cover half the cluster part, $175. Their customer service said, "no. " if there is a safety issue, this would be it! I understand there are several lawsuits regarding these speedometers. Our VIN is on their "silent recall" list. National highway safety traffic administration should be responsible for issuing open ended recalls for safety items such as these. The mission is to protect the public?.
The contact owns a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 hd. The contact stated her speedometer was incorrectly reading 16. 2 mph and then the speedometer became completely inoperable. The contact stated that the speedometer was currently displaying a error message. An authorized dealer was notified of the failures. The estimated repair cost was $1,000. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the complaint. The failure mileage was 71,000.
The contact owns a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 hd. The speedometer displayed the accurate speed driven. The manufacturer stated that the warranty for the speedometer is covered up to 75000 miles and the failure occurred at 86000 miles which was the current mileage. The contact is concerned about the safety risk involved.
Sudden problems with speedometer. Speedometer starts at between 35 and 60 mph at a complete stop then goes up from there well past 120mph when traveling no faster then 60mph. Also does not move smoothly but rather very jumpy. This is a very well maintained truck with 54k miles on it.
Instrument panel works very rarely, can't tell how fast you are going or what gear you are in and the antilock brakes make it so the vehicle won't stop when you are moving at low speeds.

The contact owns a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 hd. On June 5, 2009, the speedometer displayed inaccurate readings. The speedometer read 120 mph when the vehicle was actually being driven 45 mph. There were no previous failures with the speedometer. The failure mileage was 60,000.
I have a complaint with GMC. I am having problems as well as others that I know with the 2003/2004 truck. I have a 2004 GMC sierra and my gauges do not work. I will be driving down the highway showing I'm driving 5mph. My oil pressure gage is not right. I talked with different service guys from GMC dealerships and they said they were replacing the panel clusters left and right in these trucks. GMC will not consider it a recall. It should be! they know about this problem they should be held countable of it. Not the consumer! it should not matter how many miles your truck has. They have a bad part in or installed it wrong they need to fix it. . Thank you so much for your time! I really hope that you can get this instrument panel cluster to become a recall. . Thanks again! p. S. Sry I just put todays date in the incident box. .
The contact owns a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500. The contact stated that the speedometer did not function properly and it would indicate a faster speed than he was actually driving. The oil pressure gauge also malfunctioned. The contact previously replaced both driver and passenger side carrier bearings that are associated with the four wheel drive. The contact was able to elevate the vehicle and move the wheel about a half inch in both directions. The vehicle had not been inspected when the complaint was filed. The contact called the manufacturer but was offered no assistance. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact confirmed that the vehicle was a 2005 model produced in 2004; however, the VIN displayed that the vehicle was a 2004. The current mileage was approximately 150,000. The failure mileage was approximately 70,000.
Speedometer was intermittently sticking. (needle would jump up or down, not rotate smoothly with speed changes. This problem lasted approximately 2 weeks. Then started reading high or low by up to 50mph. This lasted approximately 4 days. Then needle rolled over past the 120 mark and stuck there. No repairs have been made yet.
The contact owns a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500 hd. While approaching a stop sign at less than 15 mph, the speedometer read 40 miles over the actual mileage traveled. The manufacturer initiated a safety improvement campaign to correct the failure on the instrument panel but the mileage on his vehicle was outside of the manufacturer's requirements. No repairs were made to correct the failure. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was under 70,000 and the current mileage was under 90,000. Updated 12/07/09 updated 12/09/09.
Speedometer gives crazy readings and never gives accurate speeds. Cost to repair is $450 to replace the whole gauge cluster. I have seen hundreds of people reporting this problem on the local discussion boards. Gm should fix this instead of making money off of defective parts.
The speedometer on my cluster gauge of my 2004 GMC Sierra 2500hd went bad. Both my father and brother have 2004 chevy silverados 2500hd and they both received a letter saying that there is a defect in the gauge cluster and both of them had their speedometers go bad and chevy fixed them. Of course mine also goes bad and when I take it to a GMC dealer they say there is no recall or defect known and will not fix the problem and now I am driving without a working speedometer when GMC should fix the defect in mine. I knew the cluster must have been going out soon because a month prior the cluster would randomly reset my total engine hours so now I will never even know how many engine hours on my truck even when I do get it fixed. I have less than 60k miles.
Speedometer is pegged at 120mph and stops at 30mph.
2005 GMC 2500hd speedometer is inaccurate. Gm is unwilling to fix the problem at their expense. They are covering the 2003 and 2004 models only. That makes very little sense to me as they are older models. I have noticed on the internet, that this is a wide spread problem.
The speedometer and tachometer works sometimes but other times it does not work. This is a safety issue as the speed is unknown. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but I was told that it is no longer under warranty.
At around 102k miles, speedometer needle quit returning to zero when the vehicle stops moving. Needle may come to rest at any point on the dial when vehicle is stopped, and the rest point may or may not change while the vehicle is underway, making it difficult to estimate speed (e. G. , needle may initially indicate 30 mph at rest, but actual speed underway isn't necessarily 30 mph less than indicated because the rest point may have changed). And when the dial zeros at 120 mph, the truck effectively has no speedometer at all rather than just an inaccurate one. I received a letter from gm warning of potential instrument failures and offering free repair on vehicles with less than 70k miles; an email correspondence with gm confirmed that they would not repair mine for free or at reduced cost. Internet discussions and ads for instrument repairs reveal this to be a common problem on a range of '03-'06 gm vehicles. The gm dealer I called will fix the instrument cluster for $500 -- roughly 3 times what repair services advertising on the internet charge to replace all the defective stepper motors in the cluster. This problem is certainly safety-related (think of misjudging speed in a rollover-prone vehicle going into a sharp curve), and to the degree that is virtually inevitable on certain vehicles, gm should issue a recall rather than a limited "secret warranty".
Fly wheel and speedometer.
The speedometer does not always zero out after the vehicle comes to a stop and the oil pressure gauge goes to zero while driving.
Speedometer reads wrong. Will be doing 55 mph and the speedometer says 120 mph. At a stop it says I am doing 80 mph. GMC wants over $500 to fix this. I am not alone in my complaint there are hundreds, if not thousands of others. . Read more...
Speedometer reads high & low no relation to actual speed. Constant problem. Excessive cost to repair using hand held gps for now. 2003 GMC 2500 sierra hd 4x4.
2004 GMC Sierra 2500 speedometer failure at 49k miles: speedometer "offset" is high and renders speedometer unusable (reads 70 when traveling 0 mph and pegs out at > 120mph when travelling normal highway speeds, then fails pegged, and is inoperative).
The speedometer failed on the 2004 GMC truck - had no idea of the speed I was going whether I was in a school zone or on the freeway. Just lucky I have not received a ticket.
- the contact stated that any time he drives his 2004 GMC sierra (80000 failure mileage) his speedometer does not register the correct speed. The contact stated that while sitting idle in a parking lot it registers 55 mph. The contact had an appointment with the dealer 3/20/2007 to look into the problem. The current mileage was 81000.
Speedometer shows incorrect readings. At times it will show over 100mph while at normal highway speeds. Other times it will read around 60 while driving at least 80 -90 (from rate of passing other drivers on highway). This is a very dangerous situation. Apparently gm will repair at no cost but only if less than 70k miles. This vehicle began to show problem around 74k miles.
Driving on the interstate, my speedometer started indicating I was doing 20 mph while I was actually going at least 60 mph. It proceeded to only indicate speeds from approx -10 mph to 10 mph. Then the oil pressure gauge went 180 degrees beyond it's max, then the battery gauge did the same.
The contact owns a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 hd. The contact stated that his vehicle fails intermittently. He stated that the speedometer displays incorrect speeds or no speed at all while usually driving 45 mph. He also stated that the tachometer occasionally operates in the same manner as the speedometer. The frequency of the failures is increasing. The dealer stated that there have been numerous failures related to those specific components. The engine size is unavailable. The current mileage is 56,000 and failure mileage was 50,000.
While driving speedometer started acting up in cold weather. Stopped working. Bringing to mechanic to fix. Also, fan motor stopped working.
I own a 2004 GMC Sierra 2500 crew cab pickup with 59,000 miles. In the last 4 months the speedometer has been giving incorrect readings, I. E. 70 mph when stopped, 115 when doing 40 mph etc. On occasion, it either doesn't work at all, or the needle is fully pegged. There is no way to tell how fast this vehicle is going. GMC customer service has stated that they can provide no financial assistance for the $320 repair because "they cannot make a business case for it. " GMC refuses to acknowledge that this is a pervasive problem throughout many of their vehicles in this model year despite ample documentation of the problem easily found at auto repair websites on the internet. Additionally, previous complaints of this exact nature and exact vehicle have been filed with NHTSA.
Speedometer in my 2003 GMC sierra has gone erratic. Zero to 120 mph fluctuations, sticks.
Gauge cluster inoperative. Speedometer, oil pressure gauge and fuel gauge giving false readings.
I found myself driving 80 mph when my speedometer was reading 65 mph. After keeping track of this it progressively got worse. It reads wrong every time now. Under "number of failures" I am just guessing at a number because it has failed every time I have driven since the fist time.
