GMC Suburban owners have reported 13 problems related to brakes failed (under the service brakes category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Brakes failed causing an accident. The vehicle was taken to dealer for repairs, but there was no apparent problem with the brakes. Three months later the brakes failed again while approaching a stop sign. Again the vehicle was checked by the dealer but they were unable to determine the cause of the failure.

Consumer was driving 25 mph and suddenly applied the brakes to avoid rear ending another vehicle from a panic stop and the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. The consumers vehicle made slight rear contact with other vehicle, but swerved and rolled on top of the sidewalk. Consumer was told by a mechanic that the vehicle did not have full stopping ability. Also, that the brakes system was changed in the 2000 vehicles.
1999 GMC has encountered numerous problems with brakes. Brakes grab on the front wheel. *t the vehicle's brake problems range from feeling soft to locking up while parked. Once the brakes failed and caused the consumer's vehicle to run through a stop sign. The vehicle has been taken tot he dealer several time. Each time the dealer replaced various components but the brake problem resurfaced.

During summer of 1999, I noticed battery acid residue below battery on lines and wires. Cleaned off with oil. Brakes were mushy. In October, 2000 brakes slowed vehicle but required additional pressure to stop. Noticed additional battery acid build up on lines and wiring. Brakes failed Nov. 22, 2000. Added brake fluid. Vehicle would not start on Nov. 28, 2000. Positive battery post separated from battery. Spent two hours removing broken-off battery from battery bolt, cables and installing battery. Poured baking soda water on affected area of lines and wires.

Brake failure @ 30mph unable to stop shuddering heard and brakes went to floor witnesses report hearing noises and seeing vehicle vibrate.
Repeated problems with brake failure following vehicle being parked in wet weather. Sometimes there is near total loss of braking capability, sometimes severe vehicle "bucking" while trying to stop. Symptoms diminish after several blocks of driving, re-appear after vehicle is parked for a few hours. Dealer examined shortly after we purchased vehicle (used) and found no problem. Have talked to other owners of Suburbans and GMC/chevy light trucks of similar vintage and have found similar complaints. Recent episode involved inability to stop and vehicle continued clear through intersection. I suspect rear brake linings/drums rust and tend to lock/release which seems to confuse the abs system until linings wear clean again. Vehicle is a hazard to operate for first few blocks in wet weather.

Repeated total brake failure when quickly and forcefully applying brakes. Brakes pull or lead when hot. One accident, four brake failures, constant brake pulling. Vehicle taken to dealer five times and they only adjust the brakes.
I lost track of brake failures. The tires wear excessively and need balancing and rotation. There is a vibration from the gas pedal, but nothing is found. The better business bureau resulted in an unsatisfactory offer - I have to pay to clear the title to have the car taken back. No other '99 is like ours to replace it.
Rear brake drums failed on three occasions. The main brake seal failed once.
The brakes have failed to stop the vehicle at slow speed 30 mph or less when one tire was in water. I have had complete loss of brakes in wet conditions when a hard braking application caused the brake pedal to junp up and down. It would now appear that only the front brakes are working now as it takes a hard break pedal to stop the truck normally, and the front rotors seem to be warped because of excessive heat. When this information was given to the deler they said a rear brake adjustment was needed every oil change even though these brakes are self adjusting. I have other friends with Suburbans with the same problems.
Upon appying the abs brakes in low speeds, the brakes failed 3three times to stop the vehicle. Once resulting in a crash/injuries. Also, replaced oxygen sensor.
While driving in rainy weather and when applying brakes vehicle will not stop. It will coast couple feet over the requested stopping distance. Has been in a collision as a result of brake failure.
