Steering Failed problems of the 1997 GMC Yukon

Three problems related to steering failed have been reported for the 1997 GMC Yukon. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2004

At speed, 20+mph, the steering will go out for a second or 2 as if it is on ice. I have noticed a recall on 98 GMC Yukons,(#97v142000), but not on 97's. I have been told that it could be my steering box. These vehicles should not be driven in this condition. Steering will be lost if steering box fails completely, which in turn causes accidents.

2 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/23/1997

Steering fails erratically and at unexpected times. "play" in steering becomes so large that the wheel can be turned with no deflection of the tires.

3 Steering Failed problem

Failure Date: 12/01/1997

Ongoing problem with steering control of vehicle(variable assist steering sensor failure) . Vehicle been/out of dealer shop and various repairs made. But problem still occurs. Can NHTSA help in this matter or provide additional information.
