Five problems related to steering gear box have been reported for the 1997 GMC Yukon. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I have experienced intermittent loss of power steeringi in my 1997 GMC Yukon when making left turns. I took the vehicle in for service on 10/24/2003 (trouble not found). I took it in again on 10/31/2003 and they replaced the power steering evo sensor ($213. 60). Still have trouble. Again I took the vehicle for service on 11/19/2003 when the power steering pump was replaced ($648. 50). The vehicle still ng. Took it in on 12/1/2003,can't isolate trouble. Again on 12/10/2003, this time they changed the power steering box? so far the trouble seems to be fixed. Then I saw an article showing the exact same trouble I'd been experiencing with other GMC vehicles. However, my vehicle wasn't listed as one of the models they were looking at. This should be checked out.
While making a left or right turn on a curve, the steering feels like it goes away and there is no steering control at all. The steering gear box has been replaced by the dealership.
At higher speeds when traveling over 50 mph the power steering releases and the Yukon wanders all over the road. The steering box has been replaced twice. The problem still exists.
When driving at a speed of 30 mph and over , the steering releases for a few seconds and the vehicles wander all over the place . Also the steering feel loose at all times. Also when stepping on the brakes sometimes the truck doesn't stop , I also don't think the abs is working properly. I tried it in slippery conditions and I never felt the pedal shake . I had a 1995 Yukon before and it worked fine. 8ak.
Intermittently while driving, the steering wheel slightly turns either to the left or right. The dealer has replaced the gear box, the steering sensor and the computer module, but the problem still exists. Manufacturer has been notified.
