The contact owns a 2004 GMC Yukon. While parked, the contact started the ignition and the check engine light illuminated. The check engine light would illuminate intermittently. The contact stated the speedometer was also failing. The speedometer would become stuck and after a few days would function normally. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technicians informed the warranty had expired and the contact would have to cover cost of the repairs and diagnostic. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 90,000.
While driving at 50 mph, speedometer 'failed' to the needle pointing straight down. I drove another 10 minutes home, speedometer needle never moved. Cycling engine off/on seemed to cause the needle to 'decrease' indicated speed by about 10 mph with each cycling. After cycling the ignition about 15 times while parked in my driveway, speed again read 0. Starting the engine again, the indicator still read 0, and when driving around the block, the speedometer seemed to work again. Doing a google search for possible fixes, I found a web-site full of people with similar issues with comparable GMC vehicles. Is there a recall in the works?.
On arrival from 80-mile trip, we parked vehicle and turned-off ignition. Upon alighting from vehicle, we detected a burning odor. Inspection revealed smoke released through front grille. Release of hood allowed smoke to billow-out. Flames emerged immediately, spreading quickly from engine bay rearward, engulfing entire vehicle, which was destroyed, along with other vehicle parked alongside. Fire department responded to immediate call for help and extinguished all fires within 30 minutes of call.
Failure to start engine. Over last 6 months, intermittent non-starting when key is turned in ignition. All lights and internal equipment (radio, heater) all come on but engine does not make any noise. There is no pattern (full log of issues available by owner). Vehicle has been in two dealerships for diagnosis and problem can not be identified. Some days the car will start after 1 or 2 tries, other days I have waited up to 20 minutes with 45 - 50 attempts to start.
