1 Parking Brake problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 08/05/2014

The contact owns a 2003 GMC Yukon xl 2500. While driving approximately 70 mph, the brakes failed. When the contact attempted to apply the emergency brake to slow down the vehicle, it also failed. The contact was able to downshift enough to stop the vehicle. There were no warning indicators illuminated on the instrument panel. An independent mechanic stated that the brake lines were corroded and one of the lines was severed. In addition, brake fluid was leaking from the vehicle. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 166,000.

2 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 11/12/2010

I lost braking on my 2001 GMC Yukon 4 wd twice during the last month, first time I had 3 brake lines replaced that had failed due to corroston, then a week later another brake line failed while I was towing a boat. I had to down shift to prevent a crash. I have spend over $1500 replacing abs sensors, brake lines, rotors and emergency brake parts, all failed from corrision. Nothing but brake problems with this Yukon with only 36k miles . In the repair shop now.

3 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 07/19/2010

I also have had issues with the parking brake and abs. If more people complain maybe there will be action taken. I do have a fuel module recall that I hope is going to be corrected. There are some dealers that do not want to even correct your safety recall. I am having to travel an hour and a half to a dealer out of town because my local dealer does not want to deal with me.

6 Parking Brake problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 02/07/2008

I have 2003 GMC Yukon with only 43k that I bought brand new in '03. The problem is its premature wear of the emergency brake. I was told by a gm mechanic that my parking brake is about to fail due to worn shoes. How is that so? I haven't even had the chance to replace my brake pads just yet. How is that possible that my parking brake shoes wear out way before my brake pads do, that I used every time I drive?.

7 Parking Brake problem of the 2004 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 12/03/2007

The contact owns a 2004 GMC Yukon. The vehicle did not pass inspection because the parking brake failed. The vehicle would continue to roll when the parking brake was applied. The vehicle was inspected by the dealer, but no repairs were made. The dealer did not mention what repairs were needed. The current and failure mileages were 87,000.

8 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 09/20/2006

2001 Yukon xl parking brake inoperative. Dealer says normal wear and tear. But car is in excellent condition and I hardly ever use the parking brake. Normal brakes are still good at 68000 miles. Informed by several mechanics that this is a normal occurrence with this vehicle. This is a design flaw gm should fix.

9 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 06/30/2006

My 2001 GMC Yukon xl 1500 slt parking brake has failed. The vehicle has 66000 miles and is in excellent condition and properly maintained. The parking brake foot lever goes to the floor and does not hold at all. The parking brake failure was reported to me by a chevy/GMC dealer during my latest state vehicle safety inspection. I am the second owner of the vehicle. The original owner says he never used the parking brake. I have never used the parking brake because it is not needed in our flat terrain. According to repair shops and the internet, this is a common safety problem with many os these vehicles. You may already be aware of this safety problem, but I show no information on your web site. I am informing you of this to perhaps prevent a serious accident. Any help you can provide will be grateful.

10 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 06/23/2006

Upon moving to houston, I had an inspection performed on my 2001 GMC Yukon. It was found that the parking brake had become engaged, even though I do not even use it, and destroyed my rear left rotor, brake pads, and emergency brake pads. In addition to replacing the rotor and all brake pads on the rear left, I also had to have the brake pads on the right rear replaced as well. I have been driving for an unknown amount of time with no rear brake pads or emergency brake. In other words, had I parked my car on an incline and used the parking brake, it would not hold my car. I also had no rear brakes if my front brakes had failed. I have read forums online and have discovered this to be a problem with several other 2001 Yukon owners. I bought the car new in 2001 and have had no need for my parking brake. The total damages were over $500 and there is no guarantee this will not happen again as there is no indication when and if the parking brake activates itself. The indicator light does not come on and the parking brake is fully disengaged.

11 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 05/03/2006

In may 2005 my vehicle failed state inspection due to parking brake could not hold vehicle. Prior to having the repairs done I contacted the dealership where I had purchased it and was told there was no recall at this time. I then had the place where the inspection was done repair the vehicle. In April of 2006 I noticed my brakes were squeaking when I was in reverse. I took it in for repair and was told the back pads that were replaced last year needed to be replaced again. I contacted gm and was told there was nothing to be done because there is no recall on my vehicle. This is a 2002 GMC Yukon I bought new in 2001. It has 56000 miles on it. I do not feel I should be having this many problems. The gm rep was not helpful at all. I will never buy another gm vehicle again.

12 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 04/07/2006

Parking brake will not hold. Vehicle will roll back with the brake fully applied. Vehicle has 35000 miles. Brake has been used only about 10 times over the life of the vehicle. Dealer states the brake cannot be adjusted. This is a serious defect.

13 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

14 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 01/11/2006

My 2000 Yukon xl parking brake wore out pre-maturely, I think this should be a recall item. It is a safety concern for the owner and the public.

15 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 10/13/2005

The consumer experienced various steering, suspension and transfer case problems with her 2001 GMC Yukon. The cigarette lighter was hanging out. The dealer replaced the housing and element. The parking brake shoes were replaced. Teflon grease was installed on driveshaft to alleviate the bumpiness in the rear. License plate light fogged up. The dealer replaced the lamp. The driveshaft was replaced along with the yoke at the rear u-joint. The consumer heard a clunking noise when putting the vehicle in reverse. The dealer determined that the transfer case chain had stretched. The dealer r and r the transfer case and replaced the chain.

16 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 10/11/2005

Non-working parking brake. If the vehicle is left in neutral (automatic or manual) with the parking brake applied the vehicle can roll. See 05v161000. This is caused by a design flaw from the manufacturer that causes the parking brake to not fully disengage while driving causing wear on the parking brake components. These vehicles have separate brake systems for normal and parking brakes. The parking brake system should never wear out. Applies to all 1999 - 2005 gm & GMC full size pickups and full size SUV vehicles.

17 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 09/28/2005

Parking brake failure. Parking brake no longer holds vehicle in place. Dealer claims linings wore prematurely. Parts were not in stock, so waiting for repair. Very similar to parking brake recall on 2001 GMC sierra pickup recall #05v161000.

18 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 09/26/2005

The consumer stated that the parking brake system failed. The vehicle is a 2001 Yukon xl. The consumer took the vehicle to a repair shop to have it repaired. The consumer talked to gm, and they offered no free repair. The brakes have been failing for the past year. The consumer's vehicle failed inspection, and that was how he figured out there was a problem. The consumer felt that this was similar to nhsta recall 05v161000.

19 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 09/16/2005

The wear indicator on my right rear brake was signaling a problem with the brakes. I took it to my mechanic who informed me that the emergency brake had completely worn on one side and the shoes had to be replaced; it also caused damage to the brake rotor which also had to be replaced, due to the design of the attachment of the shoes (the opposite of how it is attached on the other side).

20 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 07/29/2005

The parking brake on our 2002 Yukon does not hold once the rear brakes have warmed up. When the vehicle is allowed to sit for a few hours and the brakes cool, the parking brake holds. Since new, the parking brake pedal has gone all the way to the floor, and the dealer told me this is normal. I've complained to the dealer about this problem in the past when I took it for state inspection, and I was told it was a minor adjustment problem and it had been fixed. Since the car was cold when I picked it up, the parking brake did work fine. I didn't realize until last summer that the parking brake doesn't hold once the rotor assembly is warmed up. Clearly, this is a dangerous situation if parked on a steep incline. The dealer has told me not to worry because they say the vehicle is safe when in park. I disagree.

21 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 07/05/2005

I have a 2002 GMC Yukon. It has 70,000 miles on it. I recently tried to get it inspected. It failed because of the parking brake. I was told that there have been several gm products that have this same problem. I took my vehicle back to the dealer. The told me that there has been several problems with the parking brake and it has been re-designed. They also said that it was not re-called beause it is not a safety isue. (although I could not get a safety inspection because of it). I agreed with the dealer to pay 50% of the cost to fix it. When the vehicle was repaired I noticed on the receipt, and the cashier acknowleded it, that it was covered under warranty. The next day the dealer called wanting to collect $150. 00 for the repairs. I feel this should be a recall. I would like for someone to look into this matter and e-mail me the results.

22 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 06/09/2005

(1) vehicle failed safety inspection (2) emergency brake is non-operable (3) rotors and brake shoes replaced at repair shop.

23 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 06/01/2005

Couldn't get car inspected because of a worn out emergency brake that we never use.

24 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 05/04/2005

Parking brake did not hold. 1 rotor was bad and parking brake shoes were bad. Even after repair, parking brake goes all the way to floor. I believe brake shoes were defective when vehicle was purchased. This is poor engineering on gm's part. I think I should be reimbursed fully for repairs on parking brake. Since there was a service bulletin to dealers, I think the customer should have been advised. This was very unsafe. We had to pay $439. 47 for something that should not have happened. This was on 2001 GMC Yukon.

25 Parking Brake problem of the 2003 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 03/20/2005

Recently discovered, after being warned by brake shop employee, that the emergency brake was inoperative. He said this was a common failure of these vehicles, (gm's - Yukon, tahoe, suburban, etc. Series). Returned vehicle to gm dealer who repaired it and acknowledged it was a common problem.

26 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 03/15/2005

Vehicle was taken to a garage for a routine inspection, and mechanic determined that the parking brake was inoperative. When depressing the parking brake it failed to hold the vehicle while parked on an incline. Driver contacted the dealer, and was informed that the parking brake needed to be replaced.

27 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 01/02/2005

During 2004 state vehicle emissions and safety inspection it was determined that the parking brake did not work. As a result vehicle failed inspection and will not pass until issue resolved. When parking brake is pressed, the pedal easily reaches the floor and does not hold vehicle. GMC customer assistance notified 01/25/05. Not sure on resolution. Dealer wants to replace entire rear brake assembly, quote high cost for work, not covered under extended warranty, dealer blaming on normal wear and tear. Inspection place commented on similar issues with all other GMC Yukon 2002 model.

28 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 12/14/2004

During 2004 state vehicle emissions and safety inspection it was determined that the parking brake did not work. As a result vehicle failed inspection and will not pass until issue resolved. GMC customer assistance notified 12/21 and diagnosis and repair to begin 12/22. When parking brake is pressed, the pedal easily reaches the floor and does not hold vehicle.

29 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 11/10/2004

I own a 2001 Yukon xl and have a parking brake problem. When the pedal is pushed, it goes all the way to the floor. When I raised this issue with the service dept. In the first 3,000 miles, I was told this is normal, but have since discovered otherwise. I now have 46,000 miles on the vehicle. I just paid $125. 00 to have it repaired by another dealer who told me of the design defect. Gm needs to recall all the vehicles and correct the design flaw.

30 Parking Brake problem of the 2000 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 11/07/2004

The design of my 2000 GMC Yukon's emergency brake is faulty. The emergency brake failed on my car twice. In April of 2002, my car failed inspection due to the emergency brake not working. I had to pay $550 to replace the brake pads and replace a rear rotor that the emergency brake had damaged because the emergency brake pads had worn down and the base of the brake damaged the rotor. The car passed inspection but the brake did not seem to work well. So in 2004, inspection time rolls around and my emergency brake again fails. I was told gm had placed a recall to fix their faulty design but I am not sure if that is true or not. Either way, the design on this car is terrible. The only time the emergency brake is ever used is when the state inspection service tests it to see if it works. GMC should fix the brake system where the emergency brake should not be a $400 problem every two years.

31 Parking Brake problem of the 2002 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 10/18/2004

The parking brake did not engage when depressed all the way to the floor. The owner has contacted the manufacturer and the dealership and they stated there was nothing wrong. The owner received a second opinion and was told that the positioning of the parking brake was defective. Provide further details.

32 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

While applying the emergency brakes. The brake failed to hold. The driver noticed while driving, the brake light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. Please fill in additional information.

33 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 10/01/2004

2001 Yukon/xl parking brake does not work. Failed inspection twice, first repaired under warranty at ~15k miles, second for $225 at ~65k miles. Never has held. Last time was adjusted to hold, drags brake when released as too tight. Obvious poor design and safety hazard. Can never assume parking brake will hold.

34 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 09/15/2004

The parking and emergency brake on the vehicle was defective. The vehicle rolled back and has been serviced twice. The vehicle would roll frontwards as well.

35 Parking Brake problem of the 2001 GMC Yukon

Failure Date: 09/13/2004

My 2001 Yukon xl has experienced a mechanical parking brake problem since purchase in 2000. At approximate mileage 11500 I took the vehicle into the GMC dealership where it was purchased to complain that the parking brake went to the floor when applied. They told me that was the way it was designed. Since that time I have tried to use the parking brake several times and found that it did not hold the vehicle when applied. A few months ago I had my vehicle serviced by a non GMC shop and told them about a "swishing/rubbing noise coming from the rear of the vehicle, which now has approximately 73 k miles on it. They told me that this was the parking brake pads rubbing on the rotor and that this was a GMC design flaw that GMC was well aware of. I then took the vehicle to a GMC shop, coury GMC in mesa, az, where I bought the vehicle. I again told them of the non functional brake as I had previously done at the 11. 5k mileage mark. Service personnel again told me that the brake was designed to go to the floor when applied. They also told me that the rear rotor and emergency brake pad was worn out and needed replacement. I showed them the previous service order from the 11. 5k mileage mark. They told me that they would not fix the parking brake at their expence because too many miles had accumulated between complaints. I live in the arizona desert and can count on one hand the number of times that I have applied then released the parking brake as it does not hold the vehicle. According to independent shop owners the parking brake design is defective and wears out even if it is not used. This is obviously apparent in my case. Not only does the parking brake not hold the vehicle when applied it wears out when not in use and causes damage to the rear brake rotor, a definate safety issue. I was not surprised that there are many other complaints on the NHTSA website covering this very issue.
