2001 GMC Yukon. Abs module failed causing pump to run continuously. Rather than pay $1,000 for repair, opted to have fuse pulled (suggested by GMC service manager). Abs light on dashboard stays lit constantly now. So does the brake light. Parking/emergency brake has not worked for three years now. Two weeks ago the traction assist off light came on and now it stays lit up too. From what I read in the owners manual, this problem may possibly be related to the abs. After much internet research, I have come to learn that problems referenced above are quite common with GMC vehicles. Since the problems are related to the braking capability of the vehicle I believe there are some serious safety issues that need to be addressed. Not to mention the fact that I will lose approximately $1500-$2000 value when I try to sell this vehicle.
Parking brake issue. I occasionally noticed a scraping noise coming somewhere from the rear of the car. The servicing dealer pulled the rear break rotor off to inspect the parking brake. They found that the pad had worn all the way down to the metal and that the noise I was hearing was the remenants of the shoe, the liner, scraping against the drum. The dealer maintained that I must be driving with the parking brake engaged. I maintained that was not true, that there must be a design flaw with some of the brake components causing the unintended engaging of the parking brake shoe and the drum. I contacted GMC directly a spoke with a service representative who maintained there was nothing he could do to remedy the problem. I did not want to simply replace all the parking brake and drum as I felt there was a design problem and that my issue would be recurring. My main concern is that the brake shoe liner could eventually wear out the drum and possible cause a crash. However, I am not able to stop driving the car. Subsequently, after researching the NHTSA site, I found GMC's service bulletin, NHTSA # 10000172 describing the problem and the recommended fix, which was replacing a part with a "newly designed part ( a tension spring)! the service bulletin did not state that the problem was caused by drivers driving their cars with their parking brake engaged. I believe that enough owners complained and GMC realized that it was a design problem. The bullentin covers serval gm models. Again, the problem is not the noise caused by the scraping, but the potential accident caused by the brake shoe liner eventually wearing thru the parking brake drum possible causing the rotor to seperate. This could happen while driving at highway speeds. A loss of control or sudden stop probably would take place. I think that could be very serious and needs immediate attention.

2001 Yukon xl parking brakes inoperative. Failed dealer inspection. He said they just wear out. Interesting, my vehicle has 60000, and the disc brakes are still the original. I have rarely used the parking brake. Maybe on a hill once or twice. This is a design problem or a module problem and GMC is not taking responsibility. I have an extended warranty and its not covered according to the dealer. The abs went out at 40000, and was covered by the warranty. I'm perplexed about GMC's lack of concern for its products and safety.
Parking brake failure. Poor manufacturer design causes expensive repairs to pass inspection and manufacturer will not cover expenses. Service bulletins issued regarding poor design and new kits made to replace substandard parts.
The emergency brake failed to stop 2001, GMC, Yukon when the vehicle was put in drive ,and the emergency brakes were engaged. This was one of the test required for a inspection sticker in grapevine texas.
Parking brake failure every year for the past 3 years. Yukon xl will not pass state inspection due to parking brake failure. Have replaced rear rotors due to parking brake shoe malfunction. Rear brake shoe does not disengage and wears prematurely causing parking brake failure and rotor damage every year that state inspection is required.
Problems with 2001 Yukon xl's abs equipment. The dealer was notified several times about defective emergency brakes, however they fell to fix the problem. The repairs were very expensive. Please help in compensating the consumer for defective vehicle. The abs light illuminated, the consumer took the vehicle to the dealer and was advised the electronic brake module needed to be replaced.
Heard slight grinding noises while making turns. Short time later I discoverd the parking brake would not hold the vehicle while in neutral with the motor running. Vehicle begin rolling down my driveway. Made appointment with dealer and discovered parking brake drums and shoes were worn out. Repaired under warranty, but considering the work involved, I am sure it would have been rather expensive. I hope the dealer used the new style spring clip.
Parking brake doesn't work. Parking brake pedal goes to the floor with no resistance.
I have a 2001 GMC Yukon xl and took it in for some routine maintenance at about 30k miles. The dealer informed me that the parking brake was not operating properly (would not hold the vehicle). Since it is a wear item it wasn't covered by the warranty. I have owned several gm vehicles as well as many of my family members and I have never had a problem with the parking brake wearing out, let alone prior to 30k miles. The original dealer gave us an estimate of $800 to fix the parking brake. At this time we are waiting a response from gm's customer service dept.
Emergency brakes do not engage. I do not normally use the emergency brake, and only noticed this problem after the warranty expired.
Parking brake failure and transmission failure. Resulting in death of 4 year old child. Please sign my petition if you have this problem. . Read more...
On may 17, 2003 my 4 year old daughter was killed in our driveway by our 2001 GMC Yukon. We were cleaning the rear of our vehicle when the vehicle came out of gear and the parking brake failed to hold the vehicle. My 2 year old son was in the vehicle at the time, but there is no way that he could have applied the brake to release the vehicle out of gear. This is something that no family should have to endure and I am asking for help in proving these failures. I feel there are two failures with this vehicle. The parking brake on all models of these vehicles fails to hold these vehicles. I have searched your websites to find 50 plus complaints about the parking brake on GMC/Chevrolet vehicles of this kind failing to hold the vehicle and vehicles not passing safety inspections because the parking brake does not support the vehicle. The second issue is I believe that there was either a malfunction of the transmission or that there are mechanical overrides in this vehicle as in the 2003 GMC envoy recall campaign #03v075 that can allow the transmission to be shifted out of park with the ignition in the off position. I also, I found odi id number: 897722 which shows that this should be investigated. I believe a full investigation should be done on the parking brake and the transmission of the GMC and Chevrolet vehicles. This is the link to the accident. . Read more...
The parking brake on my 2000 Yukon would not hold the vehicle when the parking brake was applied and the transmission was in neutral. This condition existed when I bought the vehicle new. When I took it back to have the problem fixed, I was told this vehicle has a new type parking brake. It was not designed to hold the vehicle with the transmission in neutral. It would only hold the vehicle with the transmission in park. After two years of the parking brake not holding I had it in for service and inquired one more time about the parking brake. The dealer checked it and told me the brake pads were worn out and need to be replaced. The dealer replaced the pads and made some other changes. Now the parking brake does hold the vehicle with the transmission in neutral. I feel I have been deceived and taken advantage of since the dealer told me there was no problem until the warranty had expired. I would like to know if there has been other complaints of this type. The contact stated the emergency brake failed twice. First, it happened in October 2002. The vehicle was taken to the dealership ,and they replaced the emergency brake bands ,and turned the drums. The dealership was unaware why it went out that early. This happened again in September 2005, the vehicle was taken back to the dealership, and they replaced the emergency brake system again. They said there was a clip in the brakes that may have fallen off. The contact then called gm, and they stated there was nothing that could be done. Updated 11/29/2005.
Vehicle parking brake was inoperative. Consumer pushed lever to engage parking brakes, but vehicle was still mobile. Ts parking brake will not hold on the slightest grade especially with consumer's boat attached. Failure of the parking brake could result in the vehicle and boat to submerge in the water.
2001 GMC Yukon. There was a recall #05042, for the parking brake, however the recall did pertain to the consumers vehicle. The parking brake did not work. This started approximately may 25, 2002. The vehicle has not been in to be serviced for this problem, but was diagnosed by an independent mechanic. Updated 1/4/2006 -.

Parking brake malfunction ( linitial lack of adjustment) ref: service bulletin #010526001 NHTSA 3619514. Concern with the fact a dealer charge is required to correct a defect which can lead to hazardous condition.
Emergency brake does not work properly, vehicle has failed the safety inspection twice. Manufacturer informed consumer that dealer adjusted emergency brakes to their specifications, and nothing else would be done. . . . .
My parking/emergency brake goes all the way to the floor and does not hold my vehicle on even the slightest grade. The dealer states that this is normal per GMC even though they have had numerous complaints. My engine has a knocking noise when I start it up in the morning. The dealer also stated that this is normal per GMC. My front passenger bucket seat back moves forward and back (wobbles). My rear end wheel bearing were replaced because of a loud hum. That was misdiagnosed twice by alfred mathews. My front end feels loose and squeaks when accelerating or braking. Rear leather bucket seats rattle all the time when driving and the leather has ripped @ seams twice. Alfred mathews replaced once and tried unsuccessfully to fix seat rattle. My newest complaint is a noise that comes from the rear of the vehicle when you shut the doors. ***dimsii ivoq entry posted after 12/12/02 cut-over to artemis****761455.
