3 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2004 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 07/02/2016

Jan. 2015 traveling at 25 to 30 mph, driver front lower ball joint separated causing wheel to turn sideways in wheel well, which resulted in disabling vehicle, seperated cv shaft and fender damage. No injuries and had to have towed. May 2015 traveling 20 to 25 mph, passenger lower ball joint separated causing wheel to turn sideways in wheel well, resulted in disabling vehicle and damage to fender. Local police were called, no injuries and vehicle towed. July 2016 backing out of driveway, passenger front lower ball joint separated, causing wheel to turn sideways in wheel well, resulted in disabling vehicle, damage to fender, separated cv shaft, and dented the oil pan, no injuries. There is a fault in the design of the lower ball joint placement, the weight of the vehicle is naturally causing the ball to press against the retaining edge of the socket, resulting in metal on metal contact causing the retaining edge to wear resulting in separation of the ball joint. The only way to correct this would be to redesign the front suspension steering knuckle and lower control arm. The ball joint should be pressed into the socket with weight on the wheels not pulling it apart. My only suggestions until something is done about this, is go to a service garage and have them check the ball joints with a pry bar between the steering knuckle and lower control arm, if there is movement have it replaced and keep your receipts. Just shaking the wheel by hand isn't enough to see the movement. Do not pick the vehicle up by the lower control arm, it can result in control arm bushing separation.

4 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2002 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 11/11/2014

As I slowed to make a u-turn (turning the steering wheel left) on a residential street, the right front lower ball joint broke. The car collapsed on to that wheel and the engine stalled. The right axle was pulled out in the process. As I waited for the tow truck I looked and noticed the shaft where the screw connects to the ball joint was split in half. It was a loud frightening moment and now that wheel was sticking out away from the car with the other still in place. I lifted the car up with the jack. . . The cars fender edge collapsed onto that tire and I was afraid the sharp pressure could make it blow. I am thankful this happened on a residential street with no traffic at a low speed. I had just finished driving the car about 20 miles that morning and wondered what if this would have broken on me on the freeway going through a hilly curve or hitting a pothole. The car was able to be repaired. The ball joint and axle where replaced but it could have been worst was the message the tow truck driver told me, and I knew it also.

Failure Date: 05/28/2011

Suspension:front:control arm:lower ball joint summary: vehicle description: passenger vehicles. Certain vehicles were manufactured with ball joints that can prematurely wear out and, in the worse case, the ball joint would separate causing the front suspension to collapse. Consequences: this condition would result in vehicle deceleration and a sudden loss of power. Also steering controllability would be reduced. My car VIN is not listed under this recall but I just had an estimate to fix those exact parts. The swaybar bushing is breaking According to the dealership service manager but I cannot afford to remedy the situation. I am afraid something bad will happen as I must drive over 2,300 miles this week. Is there any way to see if Honda's recall will expand its vehicles it covers under this safety issue?.

18 Front Suspension Lower Ball Joint problem of the 2001 Honda Accord

Failure Date: 06/27/2007

I am writing in regards to a 2001 Honda Accord that I own. I have close to 76,000 miles, and I have always done every recommended service with a local Honda dealer here in canandaigua , NY. On June 21, 2007 I took the Honda to dealer for a noise in the rear of the car, it turned out to be rear stabilizer joints, both of them were replaced. Not even a week later, I am driving home from a short trip and hear this loud pop like my tire blew up. I had no idea what was happening, the next thing I knew something was scraping the road, and I could see some smoke in the rear view mirror, I somehow stopped the car and my mother and I get out. Fortunately, we weren't killed, a lower ball joint separated and pulled the axle out of the transmission and fluid leaked all over. I never expected this from a Honda, especially when I took good care of the car. My next question was the life expectancy of a lower ball joint, was it something that could go or break apart. Also, I would like to know how this could happen with no warning signs. When repairing the car I had the dealer check the other ball joints on the other side, and they noticed some play or movement in them. So they replaced the upper and lower ball joints on the other side. Which was also odd to me that 3 out of 4 ball joints needed replacement at such low mileage. I had the car inspected at the Honda dealer in October 2006, and during an inspection I understood that ball joints were to be looked at. If so, how come I was not informed of any rust in the ball joints at that time. How could they possibly have gotten so bad in 8 months time to cause such a catastrophe.
