My daughter was driving down route 95 in philadelphia when the hood on her Honda Cr-v opened and smashed the windshield and roof. This occurred on a Monday morning. She had jumped the battery on the previous Saturday night and closed the hood. She drove that night with no problems and drove all day Sunday with no problems.

5 Hood Latch problem of the 2003 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 04/09/2007

While driving 65 mph on the highway the hood flew up and hit the windshield. I was in the right lane so I was able to safely pull over. I had to get out of the car, pry the hood down, and attempt to secure it to drive to a body shop. Luckily , the windshield was not damaged, but the hood was destroyed, and the roof just above the windshield ,was severely dented. The original estimate was around $1700. The latch was damaged, and apparently there was no way to determine if the latch was damaged prior or after the incident. Earlier that day the hood had been opened and closed, but I had double checked that it was properly closed. It was nearly unbelievable that I avoided a crash.

6 Hood Latch problem of the 2003 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 02/06/2006

Driving to work on interstate 89 I had my hood fly up on me and smash my windshield, and totally block my vision of the road. I was lucky enough to not have someone near me, slammed on the brakes and pulled over to the side of the road. . . . I then got out and was able to secure the hood so I could temporarily drive it off the highway and to my office where I then proceeded to look into what may have caused this. On the day before I had added windshield fluid, shut the hood and check to make sure it was secure. It appeared to be so. I drove around town all day Sunday and then Monday morning approximately 20 miles before the hood blew up into my windshield. The auto repair shop indicated that he had seen this before on Honda crv's and that the design for where the hood rod is placed is right next to the latch and sometimes gets stuck in the latch causing it to not fully hitch. I'm amazed I'm alive and feel like people should know about this design flaw.

7 Hood Latch problem of the 2004 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 01/07/2005

Incident #2 1. On January 7, 2005, on us hwy. 441, I stopped the crv to refuel, opened the (replacement) hood, added oil, closed the hood and resumed my trip. 2. Within 2-3 miles at a speed of 60 mph, the car hood suddenly flew up and crashed into the windshield completely obscuring my view. Because it was daylight and traffic was light, I was able to move the car off the highway without incident. A police officer stopped to inquire, but there was no need to file a report. 3. Undrivable, the crv was towed to a body shop, where they discovered that the hood prop rod was inserted into the hood latch, preventing the hood from latching, thus causing the accident. Damage to the vehicle included the hood, roof and windshield, all replaced by the body shop at my expense. Here are the issues: a. The design of the 2004 crv hood prop rod is defective. It is very easy to mistakenly insert it into the hood latch, which is located less than an inch from the rod. I tried the same maneuver on our 2004 Honda accord, but the prop rod is located far enough away from the latch not to touch it at all. B. Honda has made its reputation as a manufacturer of safe vehicles. That is why I own two. However, the Honda crv does not have a warning system to indicate if the hood is unlatched. In this case, though both the hood latch and safety catch were unlatched, I was not made aware of it and was placed in a situation that jeopardized my life. This situation could easily be remedied by redesigning the rod and installing a warning light in the dash similar to those indicating unlatched trunks and doors.

8 Hood Latch problem of the 2002 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 02/07/2004

Afriend told me the hood looked like it wasn't latched on my 2002 Honda crv. I checked it and it was completely open. I could pick up the hood and look under it. I had not opened it since my oil change at the dealer a couple of months before. I'm the only driver and I always keep it locked so no one else could have gotten to the latch. I took it to the dealer and they say nothing is wrong with it. Now I'm almost afraid to drive it. I had been on the freeway just before it was noticed.

9 Hood Latch problem of the 2003 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 12/22/2003

December 22, 2003, the hood of my 2003 Honda crv flew up and broke the windshield, while I was crossing a bridge in very windy conditions. The car had been serviced the previous month and there was also an oil change (November), when the hood was last opened. There was no prior indication the hood was not secure.

10 Hood Latch problem of the 2002 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 12/01/2003

We own a 2002 Honda Cr-v (VIN jhlrd77432c052126) with 30,000 miles on it. My wife - who is the primary driver of the car - filled up the windshield washer reservoir on Monday (12/1/03) afternoon. This is routine; she checks the oil on occasion as well, and has done so with every vehicle we have ever owned. As she has done on many other occasions, she dropped the hood closed from the height of about a foot, and used two hands to try to pull up on it. There was no play. She visually checked the fender-hood fit on both sides and it was correctly positioned. A few hours later she was driving at fifty miles an hours when the hood popped fully open. Fortunately she was able to stop without further incident. We contacted the nearest Honda dealer - bedard brothers of cheshire MA; they examined the vehicle and although the mechanic said he thought that there was excessive play in the latch mechanism, they refused to acknowledge any mechanical defect or design flaw. In other words, it was not their problem. I worte a letter to Honda but they stonewalled me by saying that the dealer had found no problems. I was told to take it to a different dealer, but this would mean wasting most of a day since there are no other dealers close by. Moreover, I am not convinced that I will hear anything different from another dealer. I am convinced, however, that the hood was shut as securely as it was humanly possible to determine, and that there is a design flaw in the crv hood latch mechanism.

11 Hood Latch problem of the 2003 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 07/29/2003

On 7/29/03 at about 7:45 am my grandson opened the hood of my new Honda crv in order to get a "jump start" to start his car. I closed the hood, heard a snap, gently tested the hood for closure and moved on. At about 10:00 am I started to burlington and after about 10 miles, while on the interstate doing 60 mph, the hood flew open and banged against the windshield. Thanks to scant traffic and about a 2 inch slot below the hood, I was able to pull safely to the side of the road. I was able to force the hood (reshape) enough to get it closed and drive on. At about 11:30 returned to the dealer (shearer Honda in rutland vt) where the head mechanic and service manager determined that the hood latches worked correctly. They noted "creasing" of the coating on the hood support rod at about where it might have been creased had it mistakingly been inserted into the safety latch (the safetey latch has a u shaped area not unlike the support rod rod holder on my previous chevie s-10 pickup). I was told that since it was not a warranty problem I should contact my insurance company and file a claim. However, since it seemed to me to be a safety matter, one where I could easily have been killed, I decided to call Honda customer relations. The Honda spokesperson said since she dealership had determined the latches were ok and because it was apparently due to misuse on my part there was nothing they could do and I should contact my insurance agent. Apparently they have not had complaints re this problem, which doesn't suprise me if others with this problem were also told it was their fault and "take it to your insurance company". The reality is that it is a poor, confusing design. Simply increasing the size of the support rod at the point where it would compromise the safety latch would prevent inadvertant errors. The owner's manual briefly mentions the support rod, but no mention of this potential problem. I consider this a serious safety problem.

12 Hood Latch problem of the 2003 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 06/09/2003

I purchased my 2003 Cr-v in April of 2003. In June I was on the highway with my kids in the car going 70mph when my hood flew up and hit the windshield. I called Honda several times, and they said I have to turn it in to my insurance company, it is not their problem. It was late at night, and had that happened another mile down the road, we would have all been killed. The road had cement barriers and went down to one lane.

13 Hood Latch problem of the 2002 Honda CR-V

Failure Date: 04/19/2002

While I was driving my 2002 Honda crv on the highway about 65 mile/hr, the hood was popped up suddenly without any warning sign. The hood even flipped over more than 90 degrees and hit the windshield. The hood smashed into windshield so powerfully, the windshield was totally damaged. The impact was so strong, all items inside the car was flying freely inside the car, such as sunglasses, garage garage door opener, parking decal. My eye was hit by garage door opener, I lost my left eyes vision temporary. The worst part is the whole front window view was blocked out entirely by the hood. My car lost control on highway with 65 miles speed for a few seconds, it was the most scary moment in my whole life. I was very lucky to get the car under control. It is either the defect part or inferior design to cause the hood to hit windshield. This problem shouldnt happen and it is very dangerous and fatal, I hope your office can take action ASAP to avoid any death due to this problem.
