I was stopped in traffic because a few cars ahead of me someone was stopped to turn left. I was rear ended by someone in a Nissan rogue SUV which hit me with enough force to push my car forward and smash me into a Ford explorer. I was hit twice and my airbags did not deploy and my car sustained substantial rear-end and front damage. So much so that the car was declared a total loss. My air bag did not deploy and from the damage done should have. If it had, I would of sustained less injuries from my accident.

8 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2013 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 05/19/2017

The problem seems to manifest when the passenger is a light-weight adult, in the case of my wife, in the neighborhood of 115 pounds light to be sure, but not absurdly so. We see the problem intermittently and rarely. Maybe a handful of times in a week. The light on the dashboard that indicates that the side air bags are disabled comes on. If we are to believe this status indicator, for the period that this light is on, we are not protected by the side air bags as they would not deploy in an accident. This light stays on sometimes as little as three seconds, sometimes as long as a minute. Most often it stays on for about ten to fifteen seconds. There is no pattern for when it might come on, or what will make it go off. It can happen when stopped at a traffic light, or traveling at freeway speeds, or anything in between. This problem only manifests when I am driving the vehicle and my wife is in the passenger seat. If she is driving and I am in the passenger seat, it never occurs. In addition, the reports I have seen from other Honda owners on the internet suggest that this is always the case, that this problem manifests only with light-weight adults in the passenger seat. Indeed, we have seen this occur one time when my wife was driving and a light-weight adult friend of ours in the neighborhood of 100 pounds was riding in the passenger seat. So it seems to be very much related to passenger weight.

12 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2010 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 08/08/2016

Takata recall - the story: during the last several years, we have checked online at all of the various web sites to see if this vehicle was under a recall for the airbags. Each time, we found that this car was not listed. In March of this year, we received a safety recall letter from Honda, regarding the front takata airbags. We took the car to the dealer, and they held it for several weeks, plus they provided us with a rental car, as the vehicle was "unsafe" to drive. When I picked up the car, I noticed on the work order that only the driver's side airbag was replaced. (I had assumed both front airbags would be replaced. ) when I questioned the service rep, he simply said that the passenger airbag was not a part of the recall. In July, we received the 2nd recall letter from Honda, this time for the passenger air bag. When I called our service rep, he informed me that alternate transportation would not be provided! I called Honda customer service and spoke to several people. They all told me different things. The first one told me that the airbag would not deploy in an accident, due to a "sensor" in the passenger seat. When I checked out our car, it turns out that this is not true! the airbag will deploy, even if the seat is not occupied! our car does not have this "sensor" feature! after waiting several days for the promised "return call" from case management, I called Honda at 888-999-1009. Talked with a rep who told me that she could find no record of my ever having called,or any case set up and sent to case management! all of the previous reps had simply lied to me! now, I am simply waiting for a phone call, with a car that I cannot drive. It is unsafe. I need for Honda to talk to me, and make a decision. I can take them to court to recover the cost of a rental car , if necessary. Honda case no. 04897936.

I felt like I was bounced around the car like a rag doll (yes, I was wearing my seatbelt). Car was totaled, I sustained shoulder, neck, and wrist injuries, but was shocked that airbags did not deploy.

22 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2011 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 07/25/2013

The car in front stopped on the highway because of another driver swerving to exit. This caused my car to rear-end the vehicle that was stopped directly in front of me. My car suffered severe damage to the front end. The airbags did not deploy!! upon looking at the damage after the accident, you could see that both airbag sensors were physically pushed back into the engine compartment. They were both clearly hit, yet neither deployed the airbags. Thankfully no one was injured. I was extremely lucky. With that said, what good are airbags if they don't deploy? especially in a severe front-end collision? makes no sense to me.

29 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 01/07/2010

I own a 2008 Honda Fit. On 1-7-2010, while traveling at approximately 45 -50 mph, the vehicle in front of mine began to brake. My brakes were applied; however, the vehicle did not seem to be slowing. The brakes were then depressed all the way to the floor, however, the vehicle continued forward until it crashed into the vehicle in front of mine. The abs did not engage during this incident. The air bag did not deploy. The seat belt broke. The insurance company was informed of the above noted failures. The vehicle was repaired, however, no brake problems were detected. In late February, 2010, I got my vehicle back from the repair shop. On 3-4-2010, I was traveling at approximately 45 mph when a vehicle pulled out in front of me causing me to slam the brakes as hard as I could. Again, the abs system did not engage and my vehicle continued forward. The only reason I did not crash into the vehicle in front of me is because it cleared my path before impact. During this incident, my seat belt did not "grab" me. I took my vehicle to the Honda dealership the next day, explained the incident, and asked that the brake system and seat belt be checked out again thoroughly. The Honda service writer told me that they could find nothing wrong with the brakes or the seat belt. Due to my field of employment, I have had extensive training in emergency vehicle operation. I know how the abs system operates and how a vehicle should respond when the brakes are applied in the manner described above.

The manufacturer stated that there was no recall for the air bags; therefore, the contact would be responsible for the repair costs. The failure and current mileages were 80,000.

31 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 02/22/2009

I was driving about 45 mph on a highway. I hit the car in front of me from behind. The speed of my car at the moment of the accident was about 45 mph as well. My front part was totally smashed, the both of the seat belts got pull out all the way and broke. The car in front of me also had completely smashed rear part of the car. My car was not drivable condition that was towed. The air bags never deployed. I do have neck, back and chest injury and my passenger has the same injury as mind plus knee injury by hitting his knee strongly on a dash. My car is 2008 Honda Fit, pretty brand new car. It is very scary that the air bags did not deploy.

32 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2008 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 05/11/2008

I bought Honda Fit, 2008 model a month ago. The traffic stopped and we stopped, but the vehicle in the rear did not stop and smashed the Fit from the rear, my vehicle was in the middle, struck by a Jeep in the rear and was pushed against a pick up truck in the front. The Fit was a total loss with engine pushed back, and bumper and front end smashed. Both front air bag failed to deploy even when the vehicle was a total loss with front smashed in.

33 Air Bag Not Deploy problem of the 2007 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 05/04/2008

I own a 2007 Honda Fit, sport model- that was involved in an accident. I was driving my car on the highway in stop and go traffic. There was a late model Toyota tundra pickup truck infront of my car and it came to a sudden stop. I couldn't stop quick enough- I was traveling at low speed must be under 15mph. My car hit the bumper of the pick up truck infront of me and the hood, lights and entire "top" front end sustained about "$7000" worth of damage. But none of the airbags deployed at all. Lots of lights on the gauge cluster came on and went off but the airbags did not deploy. The tundra only sustained a scratch on the rear bumper. After a tear down by the body shop it was determined that the sensors were installed at the sides at the front end of the frame rail. This is a very low position on this car since its already low to the ground. I believe the airbag sensors are too low on these cars by poor and irresponsible design by Honda. Had these sensors been placed at a higher elevation then the airbags would have gone off and the injuries would have been even minor. This design decision seems like it was developed to satisfy the frontal crash tests conducted by the insurance institute for highway safety. During those tests the cars are evaluated for crashes to a solid object anchored to the ground. The airbags would not deploy in a crash scenario with any vehicle that would not be a compact car. I was lucky because there was no loss of life but the same accident at a higher speed would have resulted in no airbag deployment and certain loss of life. The car is currently being repaired at a body shop in lorton va. I extend you the opportunity to come and study the car if you care to do so. . . Thanks so much shazad buksh.
