36 Steering problem of the 2019 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 08/17/2019

I was driving on a two way highway at 55 mph with no cars in front of me in my lane. An incoming car in the other lane going about 55 or more mph was driving in the other lane. As the car got closer to my car and in their lane, the Honda Fit sensors went off. First, the brake signal flashed on the panel and made a loud warning noise. Secondly, my steering wheel rattled. Lastly, the car started to brake quickly. Luckily, I softly hit the brakes and it overrode the sensor. It felt like it was starting to do a full stop on the highway with cars behind me. This has happened a second time at 45 mph. Now I have to turn off the sensors every time. I worry it will glitch again or turn on and brake at a full stop without my control. The turning sensors also are malfunctioning especially at turns. Even when you are in between the lines and going slow, it turns on and slides you towards the middle, yellow line and towards oncoming traffic.

38 Steering problem of the 2013 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 08/03/2019

It was raining. I was on the highway, cruise control set at 65 mph. At this point, the road curves to the right. I had just gone through a dip in the road and I think I may have been hydroplaning. The vsa light came on and the ride became very choppy. I started pumping the brakes and I tried to steer my car to stay in the lane but the steering wheel locked up and I couldn't move it. I continued on a straight path even though the road curved. I was on the left hand shoulder, heading off the road completely, still trying to steer to the right when the vsa light abruptly turned off. At this point the steering wheel suddenly unlocked and I inadvertently pulled it hard to the right; sending me across 2 lanes of traffic, across the right hand shoulder, over a small curb and into the dirt/desert. As this was happening, I was able to correct my steering back to the left but not before I was completely off the right hand side of the road and hit a small hill next to it with the right side of my car. At this point, I managed to get my vehicle back on the right shoulder of the road. I took my car to the Honda dealer to have it checked. They said my tires were bald which caused me to hydroplane. Regardless of the condition of the tires, when the vsa is engaged, I should still be able to steer the car but I couldn't. The technician ran the diagnostic test(s) and said he found nothing wrong. Something is definitely wrong when your steering wheel locks up at close to 65 mph when a safety feature is engaged.

39 Steering problem of the 2015 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 06/25/2019

My car has approximately 60,000 miles on it and has only ever been used for transport from home to school. I was driving at approximately 20 mph and the check engine light came on while I was in motion. A couple minutes later, the power steering, traction, and tire pressure light came on all at the same time while I was in motion. My car jerked and I lost control for a brief second. The lights will flash on and off at random times while I'm in motion and is especially terrifying when trying to drive at a highway speed. Many people with 2015 Honda Fits have had similar issues and I would encourage you to explore this danger. A car that new with relatively low mileage should not be experiencing mechanical issues that put their drivers at risk.

40 Steering problem of the 2011 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 04/21/2019

Electronic power steering (eps) cuts out and back in at unpredictable times causing steering to become stiff and unsafe. The eps indicator comes momentarily when assisted steering is not available and turns off when power steering is restored. It happens periodically under all different driving conditions. This loosing and regaining assisted power steering happens with in seconds. If cornering when this occurs, the loss of powering steering causes severe understeering followed by severe oversteering when power steering is returned (all within the same cornering maneuver). First noticed just prior to getting the takata recall performed; Honda dealer stated there was nothing wrong with the steering because they "could not find any codes". Did not notice this problem too much again till recently when it started occurring so frequently the car is unsafe to drive. The owner's manual states there is only a problem with eps if the warning light stays on. Honda dealers are unaware of any issues although Honda has had eps issues with the Fit as documented in NHTSA complaints as well as Honda service bulletin 14-058 (dealing with earlier model Fits). When I recently contacted Honda and asked about the problem they stated they have no info on defects and basically it sucks to be me. Because there are supposedly no stored diagnostic trouble codes (dtc) with this known issue it cannot be ruled out as a cause of accidents. It seems any and all Honda Fit accidents (especially involving fatalities or sever injuries) it would be circumspect to consider the unpredictable loss of power steering, which causes over and under correction in cornering.

42 Steering problem of the 2010 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 04/03/2019

Steering wheel has been suddenly, and intermittently, turning immediately 90 degrees where I have to correct the wheel in order to avoid a crash. Typically happens on slight turns, like getting on or off a hwy ramp or turning on a red light. Goodyear tire said they are seeing electrical issues with the power steering and informed me this isn't a drivable car unless $2400 repair. The suddenness of this could have resulted in death, especially at the speed.

43 Steering problem of the 2009 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 01/30/2019

While driving at approx. 35 mph, radio lights flashed off. Slowing down to make a right turn, radio lights shut off, eps indicator came on for approx. 2 secs, steering wheel became hard to turn, power to steering and radio resumed after 3-5 secs. Same scenario occurs intermittently while driving on local roads at 50mph or below. Occurred at mileage 170,000.

47 Steering problem of the 2013 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 10/02/2018

When driving my Honda, the car intermittently loses electrical power for about a second. When this happens the power steering is disabled. I fear losing control especially when making turns. The steering will lock up. This happens literally daily at this point. Doesn't matter if I am on the freeway or city street.

49 Steering problem of the 2012 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 08/28/2018

While driving car when the eps light comes on and power steering cuts out mid-drive. Usually, this is while the car is hot, but not always. Sometimes, I can turn the car off and the power steering resets, but it will often cut out again. This can happen at any time. I'm terrified that it will cut off and I'll get in an accident.

50 Steering problem of the 2015 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 08/18/2018

4 warning ligghts glowed. Saftey breaking, steering, tires, engine lights. Aug. 21,2018 took to Honda dealer. Found misfire cylinder #1. Replacement of cylinder was done replaced ignition coils. Car was fine. On oct 28,2018 again same lights came on again ! found online there was a saftye recall done for this issue. But my car had no recalls. Please help. This is expensive and frighteing.

51 Steering problem of the 2009 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 05/13/2018

Intermittent loss of power steering while driving, causes difficulty in steering and potential loss of control- diagnosed by service technician as failing eps control.

52 Steering problem of the 2010 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 02/15/2018

The steering wheel intermittently freezes up, for about a second, at least once every day that I drive the car. No indicator lights on the dashboard turn on during or after these events. Several times it has been noticed while making turns, which is very unsettling. I no longer trust the vehicle's safety, and now feel the need to leave a very large distance when making a left turn in front of any oncoming car. I will not allow my wife to drive the car any more, for fear of her safety. I have heard that there is a recall for an eps failure for Honda Fits of previous model years, and want to know when the recall for this life threatening defect will be extended to the 2010 model year.

53 Steering problem of the 2011 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 02/06/2018

The power steering cuts out intermittently for seconds at a time before coming back on while driving. No specific mix of speed or temp seems to cause it, it is random. The radio cuts out each time as well. I'm told this is a faulty eps unit or sensor and is a known problem with Honda Fits. When driving straight it has not been an issue but I've heard stories of peoples steering wheels locking in a turned position and this could obviously cause an accident.

54 Steering problem of the 2007 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 09/26/2017

I own a 2007 Honda Fit sport and just yesterday while the car was parked and not running, I went to start it to leave work and the eps indicator light came on, steering wheel locked and car would not start. Was told a few things to try; bypassing battery cables clearing the circut, checked the fuse and neither worked(worth a try just to say we did so we would know). Finally had it towed to automotive shop, left over night only to find out the car started right away with no warning light on (eps indicator) for the mechanic. They drove it around, turned off, restarted and it started right up. Also hooked up to their code tool and no codes came up. My concern here is that this will happen again to myself, my 16 year old son, my 13 year old son riding as a passenger, or other passengers while driving (our only form of transportation) and cause an accident, harm, injury, or possibly death to ourselves and others around us. This is not safe and Honda should fix this issue regardless of how old the vehicle is or the mileage. It's a hazard to every life!.

56 Steering problem of the 2012 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 07/28/2017

While driving or idling, my car radio will turn off and my power steering will stop working. It almost immediately starts working again (both radio and power steering), so I cannot identify if any other electrical systems are affected. It appears that the lights and blinkers are working and I do not believe that the engine shuts off, but I can not say that for sure. Stopping the car and waiting several minutes before restarting seems to fix the problem temporarily, but it can reoccur at any time. I have counted it occurring 12 times driving 3/4 mile at speeds of 25 miles per hour. I typically experience it while driving straight. The car has 57,000 miles and goes to the dealership regularly for scheduled maintenance.

57 Steering problem of the 2009 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 07/21/2017

I was driving down two lane and my radio started cutting off and on and my steering started to lock up and became hard to steer I pulled on side street and pulled into a driveway and each sharp turn with steering wheel having to make a hard cut it would die down and when I finally got car straightend out it was diffucult to guide I turned the car off and restarted it and it seemed to run okay and then it happened again parking the car at my home.

70 Steering problem of the 2007 Honda FIT

Failure Date: 04/18/2016

Eps failure: last month, after a gas station stop; I started the car, to see the electric power steering (eps) indicator lit. Finding the power steering not working, I checked the manual. Turning the car off & on as recommended reset the indicator and unlocked the power steering. The problem has occurred several more times since then. Last week the problem happened three times, and persisted until I drove a short distance. I'm worried about failure in traffic, during a turn, etc. Reading online, I found many drivers reporting this trouble with both older and newer Fits, low and high mileage; sometimes happening while driving. The trouble can occur at highway speeds, a dangerous situation. The issue is detailed in Honda service bulletin 09-043, July 7, 2009.
