1 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2016

Can't accelerate from 20 mph to 30 mph. Only has 104,000 miles on the vehicle. Took the car to the dealer who said transmission failed and it would cost over $4,000 to fix it. This is totally wrong from the manufacturer. Honda should pay for it. See attached diagnostic invoice from the dealer.

2 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/11/2015

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. While driving approximately 55 mph, the transmission failed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 169,000.

3 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2015

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The vehicle was repaired according to NHTSA campaign number: 04v176000 (power train), which experienced heat build-up between the counter shaft and secondary shaft second gears in the automatic transmission. The vehicle began to move slowly when transitioning from second to third gears prior to the repair. Once the vehicle was repaired, the failure recurred and the vehicle began to jerk when in second gear when or while driving 22 mph or higher. The vehicle would also emmit a whining sound under the hood of the vehicle. The brake warning light, the pcs warning light, and the engine warning light illuminated. The contact returned the vehicle to the dealer who stated that the vehicle needed to be diagnosed a second time and the vehicle would no longer receive a repair under the recall. The contact had the vehicle diagnosed by two certified mechanics who stated the transmission failed, causing malfunctions when in second gear. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failures. The approximate failure mileage was 89,000.

4 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/20/2015

Transmission failed at 150k miles. Honda is aware that the transmissions of the older Odysseys are not lasting long.

5 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2015

Traveling on an interstate highway, transmission failed. Fluid exited transmission and "smoke" appeared at rear of vehicle. Dealership diagnosed transmission failure and estimated repair costs at $2500-3500. Since we were 1000 miles from home and did not want to put that much into repairs, we bought a new car from the dealership. Later found out this transmission frequently fails under these circumstances due to lack of fluid circulation. Fluid is "blown" out of transmission and to rear of car. It may be due to a defect in design.

6 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/28/2015

Car was running on city road and suddenly stopped running and check engine light came up immediately. It was good that I was not busy and not running fast or not in the freeway, and there is no car behind my car. I stop engine; after sometime I started and it was running again and after 20 minutes it stopped on the road again. I drove to a nearby Honda service center for checking and they gave me documents that said a transmission replacement needed that cost more than 6,000. I drove back in my parking lot and park there and did not drive on the road again. I tried in the parking lot and found it runs when the car is cold, but when it heated it stop, but after sometimes it run again. I do not feel safe and do not drive this car on the road. Some of my friends also brought the same car and they faced the same problem after 100,000-180,000. If a car transmission failed like this and if it happen on the freeway with 70 speed it can make serious accident. Honda CO. Must recall this model and fix this problem.

7 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/17/2014

Like many other complaints about the 2003 Odyssey, we have experienced a transmission failure. Like others, our van has had the original recall notice work performed (Honda recall number 'p30' in early 2004, after the announcement), and yet at a relatively low 125,000 miles the transmission went out in Nov '14, as confirmed by a local Honda dealer. Honda stated that, since the previous work has been done under recall, they are not liable for any more work to be performed. My complaint is this: if so many other '02-'04 Odyssey owners are having the same problem, it is obvious that Honda did not properly correct their earlier mistake, and they should pony up to fix the transmissions, or reimburse owners who already had the work performed. My request: NHTSA place pressure on american Honda to do the right thing, and own up monetarily or service-wise to myself and the thousands of other owners who have had/are having/will have these issues.

8 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/14/2014

When accelerating from first gear to second gear at approximately 10-20 mph the vehicle seems to hesitate than jump into third gear. The distance from store to home is 3 miles with numerous stop lights. During this stop and go trip it happened 3 times. I had the vehicle towed to the facility where I take my vehicles for service. The diagnosis came back that the transmission is failing and it needed to be rebuilt. Estimated cost is $3000-$4000. This vehicle was recalled in 2004 for it's transmission, it has less than 15000 miles. I don't know what the fix was by freeway Honda in santa ana, CA. Today it is 96500 miles. What is american Honda's responsibility? apparently the fix did not help in prolonging the durability of the transmission. What is the best course of action available to me.

9 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/23/2014

Vehicle transmission failed during trip. This was after Honda dealer performed necessary maitenance on vehicle.

10 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 06/20/2014

Driving approx. 75 mph, on I-35 kansas, engine started revving to 5,500 rpm, van started slowing. Semis were behind and around honking horns. Pulled off to side of road, still dangerous area. Had to get towed 35 miles to service station, said transmission failed. Repair $ 4,100. 00.

11 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2013

Transmission failure on highway. Apparently this is a known transmission failure issue with 2nd gear. Honda indicates it was "fixed" by recall, which obviously is not the case. Honda will not fix as just out of warranty window.

Transmission failure. Unsafe, specially on busy traffic.

13 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/12/2013

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while driving 25 mph, the transmission failed without warning. The contact called the manufacturer regarding NHTSA campaign I. D. Number 04v176000 (power train) and the manufacturer advised the contact to take the vehicle to a dealer. The dealer stated that the transmission needed to be replaced. The dealer could not state if the defect was related to the recall or not. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 117,000.

14 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2013

Check engine light came on. Brought vehicle to service station. Determined transmission code. Took to transmission repair station, determined internal failure of transmission. Will require replacement. Second transmission failure on vehicle. First came in 2009 at 98,000 miles. Initial rebuild of transmission was done by private reputable transmission station. Complaint filed with Honda USA, no further action rec'd from Honda. Vehicle was purchased at 40,000 miles as certified pre-owned from local Honda dealership.

15 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/17/2013

Was exiting toll gate on I-70 at kansas city and transmission fluid came pouring out of the bottom of the tranny case. I had the transmission regularly serviced and approximately 2 months before this at service nothing unusual was detected. I had the car towed to topeka transmission service, inc. The transmission was changed. In taking my Honda to the topeka Honda dealership for two other recalls, they told me that there was also a transmission recall, NHTSA-04v-176000. Because my transmission had already failed and been replaced they did nothing. I contacted Honda motors America. They told me there was nothing they would do as I could not prove that what happened was a result of that recall. I told them they could not prove that is was not. I request your assistance in receiving compensation for this recall that I was never notified about and the subsequent transmission failure. The consumer stated she was never notified of the recall. Updated 02/06/14.

The manufacturer was notified who offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 130,000.

21 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 05/07/2012

I bought this Honda Odyssey brand new. After driving it for 89322 miles the transmission failed. I brought the car to the dealer that I purchased it from. The dealer was "Honda on grand" in elmhurst illinois. They wanted to charge me $6000+ to replace the transmission. I believe that this transmission should be replaced at no charge. I believe that this transmission is under recall from Honda, but I have not received anything from Honda about my transmission.

22 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 04/07/2012

Transmission fails on highway, endangering occupants due to sudden loss of speed.

23 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 02/07/2012

137,000 miles, transmission failed. All service had been completed by the dealer during the life of the vehicle, and I am the original owner. The dealer and Honda of America would not replace the transmission and the ecu. Even though there have been many similar problems with other people with the same make and model. The ecu has a TSB on it.

24 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 01/05/2012

While driving my two children to school, my transmission failed in the middle of an intersection. The transmission would not catch but I had enough forward momentum to coast to the side of the road just past the light.

25 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/21/2011

The vehicle was moving at the speed of 55-60 mph. Suddenly few jerks were noticed and vehicle failed to receive torque/speed from the engine. Engine was otherwise appear to be on and functional. Vehicle came to complete stop on a very busy highway and started rolling backwards (since the highway was up sloping), while in drive mode. Vehicle was then put in park mode. On further attempt, it would not engage in any other gears. Further diagnostics suggested "transmission failure" code p0730, which needed transmission change.

26 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/19/2011

Complete transmission failiure while vehicle was operating at highway speeds.

27 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 12/02/2011

As my wife was preparing to enter an exit ramp from the highway, the van experienced several hard shifts of the transmission which caused her to almost lose control of the vehicle. Since that instance, every time the van shifts gears, it is a very hard shift that jerks the occupants around. Van will not shift above third grear or into reverse. Mechanic has diagnosed this as a transmission failure.

28 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2011

Transmission failed and burned out completely going 65 miles per hour on i95. 3 kids in the car and left at the side of the highway, very dangerous situation. Honda will not help us but would like us to pay them $5600 for a rebuilt Honda transmission. There are numerous reports of Honda transmissions failing at as low as 45k miles. There should be a class action lawsuit for model year 2003. They do not care how many lives they put at risk.

29 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/10/2011

Transmission failed while traveling 40mph at 130000 miles. It was replaced. There was a class action lawsuit regarding 2003 transmissions, but the window had closed, so I had to pay for it fully. November 20, 2011, while driving 45mph, dash lights flash, radio loses power. When I turn the ignition off, the car is dead. Restarts almost immediately, after lots of clicking in the dash. At varying speeds the dash lights will flash, and the clock and radio go dead briefly. Sometimes the door lock and the sliding door buttons don't work, but if I wait 2 minutes, I hear the clicking in the dash, and suddenly there is power. Left it at the dealership to be checked out over 4 days, and they say nothing is wrong. To be traveling at 40+ and have the car go dead is a hazard to me and my family, as well as everyone else driving while I am driving. It is currently at another shop to be evaluated.

30 Transmission Failure problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

Transmission failed at under 80k miles. There are numerous complaints about these Mini vans. We serviced our vehicle appropriately and also brought the car in to be checked when the transmissions were recalled. At that time they installed a trans jet kit which would solve the transmission problem. We even installed a transmission cooler. Honda is unwilling to provide much assistance at all with this repair and I think they should have done a full recall on these transmissions, as they knowingly sold a poor product.
