1 Tailgate problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2018

For some reason my particular van is not included in at least 2 recalls where other same year Odysseys are included. These all have the same engine, transmission and fuel system. My van was diagnosed by a mechanic as having a fuel pump module leak, which is recalled for some 2008 odussseys, but curiously not for mine. The same situation exists for the tailgate stay gas leakage, again, also recalled on some 2008 Odysseys but not all.

2 Tailgate problem

Failure Date: 06/14/2018

While vehicle was stationary, the manual rear tailgate gas-charged lift struts/stays failed without warning, causing the rear tailgate to fall on the occupant with significant weight and velocity, causing minor head injuries. The vehicle had been inspected roughly 2 weeks prior and no signs of imminent failure were detected. No safety mechanism exists to prevent the tailgate from falling in the event of lift support failure.

3 Tailgate problem

Failure Date: 06/26/2015

The car has large chunks of paint peeling from the roof and tailgate.

4 Tailgate problem

Failure Date: 09/04/2013

The liftgate/tailgate on the Honda Odyssey 2008 exl does not stay up. It falls down due to the weight of the liftgate and has the potential to injure the person using it. This is a non powered liftgate. Honda did have a recall on the powered liftgates for the 2008 exl, but not for the non powered ones.

5 Tailgate problem

Failure Date: 07/10/2013

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that while in park, the tailgate failed and would not remain open. The vehicle was not repaired and the manufacturer was not notified. The approximate failure mileage was 58,000.

6 Tailgate problem

Failure Date: 04/22/2013

The rear tailgate strut failed on my Odyssey ex- important to differentiate from the ex-l, which was affected by a recall for the same thing (NHTSA campaign #12v062000). The recall did not apply to the ex nor lx models. Problem is the the ex-l, ex & lx models share the same strut part #74820-shj-a21, price $63. 91/each. The parts information is right off Honda's own website. The recall makes no mention of failures to any motors, generators or power locks. The only reference is to the strut itself. If the strut is the problem, why doesn't the recall apply to all '08 Odysseys if all all Odysseys share the same part? I called Honda for an explanation & the rep said they would only pay for repairs to models covered by the recall. Since my vehicle wasn't, they wouldn't pay &, as it stands now, I'm out $213. 71, which is the cost for both parts & labor. I believe I am entitled to reimbursement of the full cost of replacing the struts & I also believe all '08 Odyssey models should be recalled for this problem as failure of the part poses a serious risk of injury to anyone standing under the door, which happens alot while loading/unloading the vehicle.

7 Tailgate problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2013

The vehicle was inspected by the dealer, who stated that the struts had leaked gas, which caused the failure. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure and current mileage 71,061.

9 Tailgate problem

Failure Date: 12/28/2012

We own the Odyssey ex-l with a manual tailgate. The taligate has stopped opening to its maximum height. The shortened distance is not obvious until you proceed under the door and hit your head on the rear tailgate. I'm probably like most Odyssey owners--more focused on her children in a parking lot than the height of my tailgate--but the headache that followed hitting my head on the tailgate this morning made me file this complaint. The door still opens smoothly but unless you are paying attention and push the tailgate up a few more inches after the liftgate supports have stopped, the door is too low and could result in a serious injury.

10 Tailgate problem

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while in park, the tailgate would not remain open. He also stated that the lift gate lock could not be unlocked with the key or manually. The contact was informed that the vehicle was not listed under recall NHTSA campaign number: 12v062000 (structure). The approximate failure mileage was 100,000.

11 Tailgate problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2012

The contact owns a 2008 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the vehicles tailgae had become inoperable and fell on the contact's shoulders. The contact did not receive any medical assistance for the injury. The vehicle was taken to the dealer who stated that there were no failures with the tailgate and offered no other assistance. The manufacturer was notified who stated that the vehicle was not under warranty and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 18,000 and the current mileage was 20,000.

12 Tailgate problem

Failure Date: 05/26/2012

The tailgate struts failed when my wife opened the tailgate causing a bruise on her head. Skin was not broken. The struts failed slightly on the 27th and lowered the tail gate a few inches. A few days later, they failed completely and tail gate is hard to open and must be held open or it falls rapidly. The struts need to be replaced. I will take it to the dealer to see if they will honor recall, even if VIN is not included on recall list or perhaps the part failure may also be covered under extended warranty.

Failure Date: 02/01/2011

I saw that Honda has recalled 2008- early 2009 model year Honda Odyssey ex-land touring models power liftgate gas struts I have a non-power lift gate version of this vehicle and the gas struts have failed. I've bumped my head on the tailgate multiple times.

2008 Honda Odyssey rear tailgate struts failed and the rear door free falls shut. The car is only 28 months old.

16 Tailgate problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2009

Tailgate lift gate hydraulic failure on the Honda Odyssey - failure could cause significant injuries. Was told by local dealership that it is a "common problem" in both old and new Odysseys. Mine failed at maybe 20k miles (I am guessing) and the car is 1. 5 yrs old. Know of another person who's failed at 20k too.
