7 Front Seat Recliner problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/14/2003

When I exit the driver's seat and step down, my thigh sometimes hits the power seat reclining control and causes the seat to recline. The switch is spring loaded and would normally automatically jump back to the neutral position when released. For some unknown reason, it's possible to nudge it with my thigh at just the right angle that the switch does not return to its center/neutral position. I've tried to reproduce this manually by pushing it in this and that direction and I just can't do it. There seems to be some cause related to body positioning and the right amount of pressure in the right direction. I'm 5'-10", about 180 lb so it's not a case of being over/underweight or above/below height. This problem has happened a number of times. The first few times it happened, I exited the van and returned to find the seat reclined all the way. Needless to say, I was confused. I thought the seat support had broken. One time, I exited the vehicle, to check something in the rear of the car and heard my son crying. He was seated in a car seat behind the driver's seat. The driver's seat had reclined and the handlebar behind the driver's seat was pressed firmly against his legs. Luckily he was ok; but this incident highlights the potential danger of this defect. Something is wrong with the design or manufacture of the switches and/or seat. They should not be so easily activated. The switches are located close to the foam of the driver's seat which compresses easily. The switches should either be relocated further away from the cushion or the switches themselves should redesigned to be more robust.

9 Front Seat Recliner problem of the 2000 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/06/2001

Right front passenger turned in right front seat to adjust rear air conditioning controls. In doing this, pressure was put on the seat back and the seat back snapped and broke loose from the seat bottom on the left hand side. The seat was no longer safe to sit in because the seat back was not secured to the seat bottom on the left hand side. When taken to the dealership, they said that the inner adjuster stud was broken. American Honda agreed to pay for the part out of warranty ($100) but the dealership did not want to help with any of the labor at first. In talking to american Honda, they said labor had to be handled with the dealership and the dealership finally agreed to cover $60 of the $160 labor charge. The cost is one thing, but more importantly, I am concerned about the safety of this part for other people. I feel there could be a serious safety issue here and that this part should not have failed. With the small amount of pressure applied to the seat back to cause it to break, the seat would have surely failed in an accident (much greater force), possibly causing serious injury to anyone sitting in the seat. I am concerned that the part that failed was defective and do not want someone else to find out as a result of an accident that possibly injures someone. We have not had the part repaired, but need to do so this week. I will have the dealership save the part for me in case you need it for future reference. Back to the cost of repair, I feel that due to the nature of the failure and possible safety issues that Honda should pay for the entire repair. American Honda did agree to pay for the part, obviously because they felt that the part should ot have failed, but the dealership is not willing to install it at no charge. I will take the issue up with them again. Respectfully submitted, russell chason.

11 Front Seat Recliner problem of the 2000 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/01/2000

The seat-back of the driver seat will start tilting back automacticly. It happened all when the key is in the off position. When this happened, the driver seat presses down on to the passanger's thigh/knee who seats behind the driver. It won't stop until I pull the adjustment switch. When it happened, my 3 years old daughter sat on her car set, behind the driver seat was crying, and my 8 years old son was screaming. My daugther had bruises on her thigh which was caused by this.

12 Front Seat Recliner problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 09/02/1999

When exiting the drivers seat, the seat angle switch is depressed, which lowers the seat back. We had noticed the seat was in a reclined position each time we reentered the vehicle, but until the current incident when I remained in my seat with one leg outside the vehicle, the seat began to recline on my son directly behind the drivers seat in a child safety seat. This of course scared us and he cried for some time due to the pain of this incident. After about an hour he seemed to be ok other than some bruising. I will contact my local service department about this, but the position of this switch or the switch itself needs to be corrected to prevent injuries.

13 Front Seat Recliner problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Conusmer was rearend by a vehicle that was driving at approximately 30 mph. Upon impact, driver's and passenger's seatbacks reclined backwards, causing back pain and whiplash. Vehicle is still being fix , cause unknown.

14 Front Seat Recliner problem of the 2000 Honda Odyssey

Middle row seats can be configured as bench seats or captains chairs. In the bench seat configuration, the passenger is not safely restrained from a side or corner impact. The passenger can slip out of the seat belt on impact, risking injury or death. I compensated for this when my son was in a booster seat by strapping the booster seat to the seat but now that he is no longer in a booster seat he is not restrined by the seatbelt. Putting him in the seats in the captains chair configuration puts him at risk since he would then be next to the door and point of impact. Ford deals with this by requiring you to "latch" the seatbelt on the side facing the door, which restrains the passenger securely. Have any injuries been reported as a result of this defect with the Honda minivan?.
