3 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 2018 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 09/01/2018

I was driving my odyssesy on a city street and approaching a traffic signal. As I braked at the red light, my young child in the back seat pulled the black strap right in front of her, which released the middle seat to slide forward. The middle seat with my son in it (which was then in a free slide motion) flew forward with incredible momentum and slammed his head into the front seat. I now am watching him for signs of concussion and monitoring his front teeth which loosened up. The middle seat release should not be so accessible to young children. It should have either two points of action required to release the seat or be positioned more out of reach for young children. Currently the strap is so conveniently located within easy reach of a child in the rear seat and easy to pull. With the vehicle in motion, it is extremely dangerous for a chair to be able to slide freely and fold. This design flaw should be addressed with a recall.

4 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 2012 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/22/2018

Passenger side rear seat is ejecting from the floor board and is reclining on it's own when breaking or going forward. Both on city & highway. It happened first on the highway going 65 and my husband had to suddenly brake because another car cut him off and our 8 yr old son was sitting in the seat and suddenly went forward and sideways and the seat reclined and would not stay in position. The seat came off the floor board brackets which are shown in the photos . Also in one photo you will see the space between the seat and the smaller seat in the middle how far it came off the brackets.

5 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

Center passenger seat back does not lock into place endangering occupant during a roll over or sudden stop / accident situation. Sometimes it locks, sometimes it does not, and also during hard impact force on the seat back the seat back will start to move freely . Dealer refused to entertain defect request to address. Dealer also refused to provide a part information that shows the locking mechanism so that a replacement could be obtained. The apparent defect appears to be a design and/or manufacturing problem. Please email me for additional photos.

6 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 2015 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/30/2018

Recently while driving with my two sons in the outward position in the middle row, a strange clicking came from the driver side middle seat. My 5 y/o son said "my seat is moving". The back of the seat was no longer locked into position and was moving freely back and fourth with minimal effort. We were doing normal stop and go, rush hour city driving with no hard stops and no sudden brakes. I contacted the dealer who said there was a recall however the parts were not available yet.

15 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 2008 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/29/2008

This is not a complaint about a vehicle accident, however it is a complaint about a vehicle design when installing a car seat. On the 2008 Honda Odyssey there is an 8th seat that is in the middle row center; it is called a magic seat. The dealer told me that a car seat can be installed safely in this magic seat. However, after I purchased the car I was unable to find a car seat to fit this seat that could be installed correctly (meaning not moving more than 1 inch in any direction). I tested many models of cars seats including: britax, graco, evenflow, sunshine kids, etc. The owner's manual of the Odyssey is very vague on whether or not a car seat can be installed in this seat and after calling Honda USA custom service, the agent could not give a straight answer on whether this seat was designed to hold a car seat or if any car seats were tested by Honda. I complained to the dealer, but since I had already purchased the car, they only directed me to the Honda USA costumer service.

16 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

The van was struck in the back by a large (semi) truck. The van rebounded forward from being hit by the truck. At this time the front seats in the van collapsed to the full back position – 180 degrees. This had us lying flat, below the level of the windows. As the van came to a stop the truck came up along side the van and stopped with the front right wheel being lodged in the sliding door on the left side of the van. The van was half way in the third lane of traffic and half way on the shoulder. The truck was tight against the center concrete median on the shoulder and tight into the side of the van. The flattening out of the front seats prevented us from controlling the direction of the van and would have been a living hell for anybody sitting in the back seats. This could have made this a much worse accident. Is this an expected result when an Odyssey is hit from behind?.

17 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/04/2005

2004 Honda Odyssey. The second row seat dislodged from the vehicle and tipped forward with consumer's daughter in a child safety seat. This happened when the consumer had to make a sudden stop. This seat had been in this spot for months. The dealership stated it was not latched correctly and they secured it. The dealership showed consumer how to do this. She tried to latch the seat and could not get it in. She then took the vehicle back to the dealership, and the service department agreed that it would not go in. Then they looked at another vehicle and found the same problem. The seat had to be dropped down very hard into place to make it latch; this was not indicated in the owner's manual. The dealership originally stated could visualize that itwas latched, but upon further inspection, there was no way to tell.

18 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/02/2005

I was driving n/b 101. I pressed my brake to avoid a collision causing my vehicle to decelerate from 65 mph to 40 mph. This resulted in my daughters seat un-latching from the floor of the vehicle and tilting all the way forward, causing my 2 year old daughter's face to be slammed into the back of the passenger seat. I pulled off the freeway. I saw that the back latches were in the popper place on the floor but weren't latching. I then tilted the seat up and placed it down hard about 20 times but it still would not latch. My daughter wasn't seriously injured, so at the preschool one the teachers and I read the manual and pulled on the latch release several times and tilted the seat forward and then back down, but it would not latch. Then one of the grandparents offered to try and help but still the defective seat wouldn't work. I called the Honda dealership in san jose CA on stevens creek blvd, where I bought the vehicle. They immediately said it was the middle seat and that I must be doing something wrong because they get the complaint all the time. I drove to the dealership and accidentally stopped off at the Volvo dealership next door. The Volvo service guy try to see if her could fix & after numerous attempts said the seat was defective. I then immediately proceeded to the Honda dealership. Once service person tried to latch the seat, could not, and then called another service guy who initially could not get the seat to latch. He then placed a pen around the latching mechanism and pulled on the release lever a few times and it resulted in the seat latching. He told me that the latch was stuck in the unlocked position but that it was fine now. He said it may happen again and that I could do the same thing he did to fix it. This seat is faulty and I'm worried for my families safety. This seat only works sometimes, and sometimes it fails, going into and remaining in the unlocked position, just because I press my brake. Please help, I'm scared.

21 Mid/rear Seats Assembly problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/11/2004

To whom it may concern: I am writing you with much pain and difficulty. Today while I was attempting to pull my bench seat out of the storage well, it malfunctioned and slammed down with its full weight and crushed my arm. I went to the doctor and after x-raying it, found out that it is broken! I have been in severe pain all day. And to make matters worse my husband, who is serving on the u. S. S baatton , cannot help me in a time of transition. I have to move 2 kids, 3 dogs, and my entire household to norfolk, virginia on Monday!!! I am appalled that these bench seats have no kind of safety mechanism to keep them from falling full force, injuring the people. And I shutter to think what would have happened if my 2 year old was near by and had her arm (or worse) injured. I looked thoroughly through the owners manual and found no warning what so ever of the possibility of this malfunction. Now I am not only going to have to suffer this injury, but I have to cope with extraordinary pain and difficulty during what is one of the most stressful periods in our lives. I am insisting that you put some sort of safety catch lock on these seats immediately! not only could other people be severely injured like me, but a child could die from such an incident. You will be hearing from my attorney further on this matter, but as for now, I insist that you do something to protect other consumers. I am also sending a copy of this letter to the better business bureau, consumer reports, the transportation safety institute, the national highway traffic safety administration, and any other consumer protection agency that I can find. Sincerely, cristie escandon.
