Our 2001 Honda Odyssey began making a loud metal on metal clunk whenever we went over any kind of bumps in the road. The noise was centralized to the front driver's side. When taking it it to be repaired, a section of the front coild spring that had sheared off fell from the front of the vehicle. We pulled over and recovered the section of coil and we were fortunate that we were going slow and that it does not appear to have done any other damage. To correct the failure we had to replace both front coil springs ($560) and we were also advised to replace the struts even though they appeared to be in good shape with no leakage (which we chose not to do at this time due to cost).

Front suspension - coil spring failure backing out of garage the rt ft spring broke with a loud noise, car pulled to one side on short drive with hard to control pull to right, a 8" piece was found on garage floor, no tire damage from broken spring upon inspection the left side spring is near failure and had to be replaced vehicle mileage 75k, this is a faulty Honda problem but Honda never owns up to ever having such problems even though neighbors had similar problem, this is a maintenance issue so they say. Both front coil springs replaced.
I have a 1999 Honda Odyssey, 147,000 miles. On Saturday, March 3, 2007 at approximately 11:30 am, I was driving and heard a loud noise beneath my vehicle. I then heard a piece of metal sliding down the roadway behind me. After pulling over and noticing that my front right tire had been punctured and going flat, I retrieved the large piece of coiled metal from the roadway. My first thought was a broken coil spring, but it appeared that the springs were ok. I replaced the tire and proceeded slowly believing that I had probably run over the broken spring which had been left in the roadway by another vehicle. Approximately 10 miles down the road I heard the same sound, and another piece of metal sliding down the road. I retrieved that piece of metal and compared it with the first, and it is a near duplicate match, including the location of the break. Upon further inspection, I noticed that my van had broken both the left and right side front coil springs, nearly identically, but it was difficult to tell because they appeared to still be seated properly in the coil housing closest to the tire. It appears that the broken coil springs are rusted through the black manufacturers paint at the location of the fracture. I had two of my children with me at the times of the breaks. I estimate my speed at 50 mph on the first break, on the two lane roadway, and the roadway was level, clear and dry. The second break occurred probably within 10 miles of the first and I estimate my speed at approximately 30 mph. I was operating on a two lane roadway, and the roadway was level, clear and dry. It should be noted that a time between the two breaks, after cresting a hill on a two lane roadway, I heard a metal scraping noise beneath the vehicle, and immediately pulled over and checked under the vehicle and walked the roadway behind the vehicle, but was unable to locate what caused the sound. After pulling away, the sound was gone.

I own a 2002 Honda Odyssey. On July 22, 2006 while I was parking the van in my garage, I heard loud clanking noise from the front left side. Later next day, when I was backing up the car, a metal piece fell on the ground. It turned to be **suspension spring coil**. I read from other consumer sites that, in 2001 and 2002 Honda Odyssey models this is a known issue. Luckily my extended
warranty covered the repair expenses. I sure hope NHTSA would investigate into this potentially dangerous issue. For now, I am just hoping the other coils don't break while driving.

Front coil spring failure on 2000 Honda Odyssey van. Vehicle now pulls hard to right. Fortunately it did not happen at speed. Dealer advises me that this would be a warranty repair if warranty had not expired 7000 km ago.
The left front coil spring on our 2001 Honda Odyssey van with approx. 56,000 miles is broken. I believe this is a defect and should be made public because my neighbor had the same problem with their 2001 Honda Odyssey van. See also 10212265.
Noise coming from front drivers side of van. Rubber seal at top of strut was hanging down. Spring on drivers side was broken. Honda dealership said both springs were broken. Dealership had to replace springs, struts, seals. . . Etc. Complete replacement of front suspension parts. {both sides} ron at ext. 118038 at american Honda stated that parts were defective. American Honda paid for all parts but not labor. Total bill over $2,000!.
Front right spring fractured causing the shocks to fail also. Repairs totaling $699. 37 included replacement of front right and left spring and front shocks.
1. Cold weather or none 2. Driver side front strut spring broke traveling down the strut and wrapping through the abs line (no line damage, but potential abs line failure present) pressing against the tire (resulting in a burned rubber smell and potential tire failure). 3. Front spring replaced, bearing replaced, rubber replaced. (old parts are available - also have photo of failure in place on vehicle).
: the contact stated while driving at 40 mph the front driver side coil spring fractured and punctured the tire. The vehicle pulled sharply to the left. Fortunately, the incident occurred on a rural road with little traffic. The vehicle was towed to an independent service dealer where the shock, strut and bearings were replaced. Updated 2/9/2006 -.
For no apparent reason the drivers side front coil spring let go from whatever holds the spring in place. The left front collapsed . The spring ripped the side wall of the inside of the tire causing it to blowout. Damage was also done to the a. B. S. Cable . This occurred at 78000 miles to a 2000 Odyssey. I replaced the front springs and struts and will have to get brake work done as a result of this scary situation. I bought this car new in August of 2000.
On 12/28/05 the drivers side front coil spring broke on our 2001 Honda Odyssey lx with 79,662 miles. This occurred on a residential side street at low speed. The vehicle pulled sharply to the left, however, this was controllable. No other damage occurred as the spring broke cleanly and collapsed vertically (tire, strut, strut tower are fine). This was replaced at my own expense by our local Honda dealer. At the time of the event I noted that this seemed unusual, however, I'm not sure if the dealer notified american Honda of the issue. I'm am concerned about the integrity of the other spring and plan on calling Honda to discuss.
I have a 2000 Honda Odyssey minivan with 52k miles on it and the coil spring around the strut of one of the wheels snapped while driving on a flat road. There was no trauma that made it snap. I was told that if that had happened while we were going 55 mph on the highway, I would have been in real trouble. I don't think that the coil should have snapped at 52k miles. It's going to cost more than $900 to fix.
A potentially serious and deadly defect in the springs of 2001 Honda Odyssey Mini-vans. On December 9, 2005 while driving 30 mph the driver-side spring of my Odyssey suddenly failed and broke into two pieces. This caused my vanã‚s steering to immediately pull hard to the left and into the other lane in front of oncoming traffic. Fortunately I was able to maintain control and no other damage occurred to my van or to others. We replaced that spring at our expense and visual inspection of the remaining spring showed nothing unusual. We were told at that time that spring failure in relatively new cars with an normal or easy driving history was very rare. We chalked up our experience to a fluke. On January 12, 2006 the passenger-side spring suddenly failed and broke into two pieces. Again, this occurred while at very low speed, I was able to maintain control while the steering pulled strongly to the right, and no other damage occurred. Again, we are replacing that spring at our expense. To have a failure of a spring is a highly unusual event for a ã‚youngã‚쳜 car with low mileage and an excellent maintenance record. To have two such failures within one month of each other is deeply disturbing and leads me to believe that there is a manufacturing defect in the springs. This fact presents a grave threat to the safety of not only the drivers and passengers of Honda Odysseys, but of others who may by hit by a van which has careened into oncoming traffic or off the road.
2001 Honda Odyssey lx front passenger side coil spring was broken. The vehicle was making a terrible noise. The part was on back order. When the mechanic removed the spring form the vehicle, it was found completely fractured and jagged in various places.
While the van was parked in the driveway the consumer heard a loud noise coming from the van like metal hitting metal. The noise was due to the coil spring breaking. The van was towed to the dealer and the technician stated, "we've never seen this problem". The sliding door can't be opened from the inside. Please provide any further information.
While parked the left front coil spring broke and punctured the tire. Nlm Honda paid for the cost of repair.
1999 Honda Odyssey. When we were in our dealership for a state inspection the mechanic notice our front coil spring broken, when questioned this was one in a million , they said it was the only one in our area that had this problem. When I asked to have the other coil spring replaced as a safety concern they told me it was not necessary due to they have only seen one in there dealership with this problem I was always told that if you replace one tire or shock or strut you should do it in pairs! lucky for us we had a ext coverage (mileage 46751) the second time was at (97653) lucky for my wife the van was at a light and the tire went flat. At the dealer the mechanic found the right coil spring broken with a flat tire and a list of bent and broken parts a total of $617. 00 out of our pocket. Coil springs should never brake , this is a safety concern.
2001 Honda Odyssey lx front passenger side coil spring broke backing out of driveway. Car pulled very hard to the right and could not be safely driven.
