1 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2008 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/06/2019

Issue with power steering rack and pinion leak. As part of power train, the rack and pinion leak creates safety issue while driving. Turning effects driving and pings, knocks are heard @ 52,000 miles. We have lifetime unlimited miles and years warranty from dealer. Warranty company and dealership parted ways so brandon Honda verbally refuses to fix problem. This should be a recall. Other Odyssey owners with this issue. Since it's not a recall, dealer should fix under our warranty. While sitting, power steering fluid leaks from rack and pinion. Seals/gaskets, whatever else reason for leak which is expensive to fix. We replaced a cv joint at our expense this year. All the steering and powertrain parts are listed under powertrain on Honda website's parts page.

2 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/14/2014

Cruising at highway speeds, vehicle suddenly lost acceleration. Added gas increased engine rpm and finally, smoke appeared and the vehicle was pulled over. Was towed to the nearest shop and told that the transmission fluid blew out of itself but could not identify the leak. Shop refilled transmission fluid and sent us on our way. 10 miles down the road, it happened again and this time I didn't rev the engine hard and pulled over to find that the car will not shift, either drive, or reverse. Smell of burning transmission fluid. Towed again to the local transmission shop and was told that the transmission is in need of a rebuild. Cost is upwards of $2500. We cannot afford a rebuilt transmission especially after paying out taxes and being affected by sandy just before. Honda is not helping, was told that there are no known issues with your model year and transmission. I kept insisting that there are many forums out there that say otherwise but Honda will not admit the fact that their transmissions are flawed. The 2006 class action does not affect my year so let's hope more people out there will be able to persuade for another case.

3 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/08/2013

The vehicle was a 2005 Honda Odyssey. I was traveling with my two children on the highway, going 75 mph and suddenly saw a flume of smoke behind my car. I notice the rpm jumped and I stepped on the brake immediately. It smelled like some liquid was burning. Pull the car over onto the side of the interstate and look to find smoke coming from under the hood and the transmission fluid had leaked and sprayed all over the engine, hoses, battery, radiator, etc - causing the smell. Towed it back to my house. When the car got to the house, the tow truck driver showed us that the atf had leaked probably completely out of the transmission. I would like for Honda to recall the transmission and fix my car. It's not only a defective transmission, it also a hazardous - what if it had caught on fire - when the fluid sprayed out.

4 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

5 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/17/2012

I was traveling with family on the highway, going 75 mph and suddenly saw a flume of smoke behind my car. I notice the rpm jumped to 5 and I stepped on the brake to immediately. It smell like some liquid was burning. Pull the car over onto the exit and look to find the transmission fluid had leaked and spray onto the exhaust and muffler - causing the smell. Towed it back to my house and call Honda but they said it's over 100k and they will not cover any repair cost. It's obviously a manufacturing defect but they will not repair it. Just the week before, I brother-in-law's van (exact same make and model - and about same mileage had to same problem - oddly enough almost at the same place on the highway. It's very unlikely that two identical vans broke down almost at the same spot with the same problem was a normal break down. Honda knows the problem but would not admit to it and will not recall it. I would like for you to tell Honda to recall the transmission and fix my car and my brother -in-law's. It's not only a defective transmission, it also a hazardous - what if it had caught on fire - when the fluid spray out. Please mandate Honda to recall the transmission of the 2003 Odyssey. Thanks.

6 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/18/2012

I bought my 2004 Honda Odyssey with less than 79k miles. Now with 107k miles the transmission fluid is leaking .

7 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2000 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/05/2011

@ 74560 miles check engine light came on was told it was the catalytic converter. Took it dealership but could not fix problem two weeks and due to being away from home on vacation could not wait around. Took to dealer immediately after getting home but was told it was over mileage for recall. Since I had to pay full price took it too local repair shop for repairs. The check engine light came back on after @ 5000 miles dealership blamed outside mechanic who said nothing was wrong with converter. The transmission was leaking the whole time but the dealership never told me about a recall. Now it is over 140000 the transmission is totally shot even after I have kept refilling it to make sure the fluid stayed at proper levels and I have to either have to repair it myself or trade it in. The dealer new there was a problem but never informed me when I was in there.

8 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/16/2011

When traveling down the passing lane of a 4 lane highway in heavy traffic at 60 mph the vehicle suddenly lost power and began to slow as if the brakes were on. Fortunately I was able to pull over to the side of the road without anyone running in to me. Upon getting to the side of the road I noticed that the engine light was on. I put the gear shift lever into park and walked around the van to see if any fluids were leaking. None were. I got back into the van to see if it would move. It finally did after moving the shifter from p to d a few times but it did not have the power and did not shift correctly. The code that turned up on my mechanics scanner showed that the transmission had slipped and would need replacing. I called Honda and they said there was nothing that they could do for me eventhough there has been numerous issues with these transmissions. The only recall they acknowledge was the fuel pump for my van. The outcome of the event could have been much more serious and I feel Honda is just turning a blind eye to this. If this caused a serious accident I question what they would say after a lawyer gave them a call. They should have at least attempted to negotiate a deal for a new transmission. This will be the last time Honda does this to me. I have owned many gm vehicles with more mileage and never had experienced a transmission failure. After spending over $3500 on a rebuilt transmission I don't believe another Honda will be in my driveway!.

9 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/06/2010

2006 Honda Odyssey bought used w/ approx 61,000 miles and 60,000 mile extended warranty, purchased last week of July 2010, breakdown 10/6/2010. Had shake while driving and was serviced, found to have problem with transmission, transmission fluid changed and problem resolved. Car was driven part way across country, 1200 miles, in the next 10 days, all highway miles. 20 minutes after stopping for lunch, while cruising on highway @ 70 mph, car had intermittent clicking noise coming from driver's side engine compartment. No warning lights were on @ this time and temp reading was normal. My husband took car off cruise control, noise stopped, he attempted to pass another vehicle, car lost all acceleration, check engine light blinked a couple times, he slowed, started safely moving to shoulder, clicking started, check engine light came on solid, temp gauge spiked to red, caron shoulder, no power. From first clicking noise to engine failure and first warning light was approx 1 minute. Dealer found car to have cracked engine, melted radiator, blown head gasket, no coolant or oil in engine. No original source for breakdown could be found even after complete engine teardown. Head gasket was not cause of breakdown. No oil leak, had oil change @ dealer prior to our purchase of vehicle, not yet due for routine service, oil life indicator gave 50% oil life 20 miles prior to breakdown. Honda notified and not concerned. Warranty CO denied claim b/c no cause of failure found. Dealership that sold car is paying for new engine, radiator and any other repairs and will continue to seek reimbursement from warranty CO. Search of Honda forums (edmunds. Com) found many problems w/ oil consumption on 2005-2010 Honda Odysseys.

11 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2007 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/02/2010

Failure of transmission due to (in dealer's words) "a crack or porous metal casing. " this is at least the third repair of the transmission. Two previous episodes of transmission fluid leakage were deemed by the dealer "caused by a loose bolt. " the first time shortly after vehicle delivery bolt was tighten, second time bolt was tighten and set with lock tight which required overnight stay at dealer service center. Third time, entire transmission is being replaced- being covered under dealer supplied powertrain warranty with a $25 deductible.

12 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/26/2010

I have a 2001 Honda Odyssey. In may/June 2009i noticed that there was some fluid leaking near the undercarriage -this was noticed right after a dealer servicing where they changed a lot of fluids in the vehicle. I called the dealer, he took a look and determined it was a transmission oil leak. He estimated that it would cost me up to $4000 to fix this problem and advised me to keep the fluid topped off and that would take care of the issue. On 01-21-2010, my van did not start even though the battery was working. I had it jump started. To prevent further such issues, I took the van to aamco to get the transmission oil leak examined. They determined that it was from the inside the transmission box and that it would take$600 to open the transmission and fix the issue. When they opened the transmission they discovered the transmission block and transmission had some issues and determined that the transmission needed replacement/ or needed to be rebuilt. They provided an estimate of $2300. I looked up the Honda website and discovered that this was an issue with Honda Odyssey vans of my model year and Honda extended the warranty on the transmission for these vans to 7 years and 9 months. I had never received any mailing to this effect from Honda and this was new information to me. I called Honda and they explained that they could not do anything as the warranty had expired - they want me to take the vehicle to a Honda dealer to get the transmission examined - they will consider my claim at that time. There is no guarantee I will get any reimbursement from them. The cost of the examination at the dealer would be out of my pocket in addition to the $600 I have already paid to aamco. Question Honda knows there is a defective transmission in this model year, why are they not replacing it? the way they have dealt with this issue - forces me to back on the road with this van with a risk of it stalling or having other transmission problems on the road.

13 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/25/2010

The contact owns a 2003 Honda Odyssey. The contact was driving approximately between 55-65 mph on normal road conditions and suddenly smoke was coming from underneath the hood. Pressure was applied to the accelerator pedal, followed by no power response. The driver pulled over to the side of the road. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer for diagnostic testing who stated that the engine exhibited a transmission fluid leak. The transmission needed to be replaced and has been ordered. The failure mileage was unavailable.

14 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/20/2009

The contact owns a 2001 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that the vehicle was leaking transmission fluid and was shifting hard. The vehicle would also jerk upon shifting gears. The manufacturer could not assist with the repairs. The powertrain warranty expired at seven years or 100,000 miles, whichever occurred first. The vehicle was out of warranty by two months. The manufacturer offered $1,200 off the cost of the $3,700 repair cost that would be the contact's responsibility to pay. The failure and current mileages were 74,000.

15 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/12/2008

Transmission defect. While driving, the d4 indicator on the instrument panel flashes. An abnormally loud noise from the transmission. D4 indicator. 16 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/22/2007

The contact owns a 2002 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated that he is experiencing failure with the powertrain automatic transmission. While driving 65 mph, the vehicle lost power and smoke began to rise from the front of the vehicle. He then noticed fluid leaking from the undercarriage. The vehicle was towed to a local dealer, where they stated that the injector kit was bent and burned and he may need a new transmission. After the vehicle was repaired at 62,123 miles, the transmission light illuminated on the dashboard. Honda of America stated that they would provide him with a new transmission. However, he would be responsible for the cost, even though they are aware that this is a manufacturer defect. The dealer also stated that he would have 2. 5 hours to take the offer or the deal is off, especially if he were to take the matter to court. The contact has a report from the dealer where the vehicle was diagnosed. Recall number 04v176000 (power train:automatic transmission) was referenced. The current mileage is 79,214 and failure mileage was 78,242.

19 Transmission Fluid Leaking problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/29/2003

Purchase vehicle 12/02, soon after purchase returned auto to dealer for pulsing / bumping in drive tran at speeds of 50-65 mph. Told could not duplicate and the they all do this. (some reply). At 46k miles vehicle continued pulsing but now was at times slipping into a nuetral gear, (auto rpm would red line when this happened) transmission would then rengage. Dealer than changed a soleniod vave and did another fluid flush (I had already did the flush). Dealer attempted to charge me for valve. We agreed with odyessey cronic transmission problems it should be warrenteed. At 48k miles transmission continued slipping / bucking. I would not allow my wife to drive it at this point for safety reasons in atlanta traffic. I drove it to work and at about 75 mph, it started loosing power (drive tran power). The lose of power was followed by and hard bump, bucking, tcr light on, check engine light on, brake light on. I pulled over and no fluid was leaking. Vehicle wa s able to continue on normally (??) although lights stayed on. I called dealer and brought back in that day. Transmission was changed. Now at 61k miles the vehicle continues to pulse / buck at 50-65 mph. There is a recall on earlier Odyssey's transmissions why no 2002's.
