36 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/15/2013

I bought a 2001 Honda Odyssey in Aug 2001 and in June 2009 the check engine light came on at 98000 miles. Took it to willis Honda (the dealer I bought the car from ) and they said the transmission had to be replaced (within extended warranty (93 months & 109000 miles) on miles and 2 months outside the extended warranty on months. Honda agreed to foot half the cost ($1200) as a one time goodwill. Now it is 145000 miles and this winter since January (I live in NJ) I notice that when it is cold and the engine is cold and I start driving without warming up around 20-25 mph the engine revs (possibly because the gear shift from 1st to 2nd or 2nd to 3rd doesn't happen smoothly). Took it to the willis Honda who had installed the replacement transmission in June 2009 (36 month/36000 mile warranty). It is now little over 43 months and around 47000 miles on this transmission. They say that the transmission is slipping and will have to be replaced ($5500) and that replacing the fluid/flushing the transmission would not do anything. Are transmissions expected to last only 47000 miles. I think Honda is selling bad equipment.

I took 2002 Honda minivan to dealership; they suggested a transmission replacement cost around $ 4500! called american Honda and enquired about any recall, Honda mentioned about the second gear recall, but I think the second gear automatic transmission recall not solved the transmission problem. Failure Date: 08/06/2012

Was driving from desoto state park back home to tuscaloosa when the transmission began to slip between 2nd and 3rd and then again between 4th and 5th. Ended up having to drive home doing 40 mph on back roads. Rebuilt the transmission to the tune of $4000. Two years and 40,000 miles later the transmission failed again. . . Same exact issue. This is a well known problem to every mechanic I have dealt with. This issue has existed since the car hit the market. This needs to be investigated. Now I have a gigantic paperweight sitting in my driveway. The vans value is less than it will cost to fix. Pease investigate.

44 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/29/2012

The transmission started slipping while our family was heading for a vacation going 75 mph on freeway in the middle of nowhere. Van jerked incredibly, then wouldn't shift into anything higher than 3rd gear. We made it to a freeway exit (not a town, just an exit) where after stopping for a minute we discovered that the van wouldn't go into reverse. We were able to turn it around by pushing and managed to make it to a small town limping along on the side of the freeway going 40 mph with our hazard lights on. Repair shop has quoted us at least $3700. 00 to fix it.

47 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/16/2012

The transmission slips between 2nd and 3rd gear only. Happens unpredictably, when first starting out and trans. Has not heated up yet or after having driven for quite a while. No other symptoms, no clunking or vibration, just seems to go into neutral while driving. Doesn't happen during every outing. Seems to correct if I downshift and then shift back up to d. But poses a danger when it happens as I am pulling out into traffic. Dealer said a recall service was done by previous owner, some kind of oil pump or cooler, but the problem persists.

50 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/21/2012

The transmission began slipping between the 2nd and 3rd gears. The vehicle would slowly move forward with very little apparent thrust then would suddenly "kick" into the next gear and lurch forward, then slowly move into the next gear. Also the tcs light came on and stayed on and the green drive (d) indicator began to flash. This problem is primarily with the drive gear and not so much the reverse gear. The check engine light came on two weeks ago and has remained on. An obd code reader on 22 Feb 2012 indicated 3 different fault codes -2 generic and 1 manufacturer- with the majority of explanations indicating specific transmission faults and one- a tcc code -electrical.

60 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/20/2011

Bought the vehicle at an auction 4 days ago and started experiencing transmission problems today. The transmission is slipping and stalls when shifting to upper gears especially for the first 3 gears. I understand it's a used vehicle and could have problems. But when it is an obvious design/manufacturer's flaw, going by the thousands of complaints from Odyssey users (brand new and second/third owners), should Honda not be liable for these design flaws? only after buying, experiencing and then researching my transmission problem did I realize my grave mistake of investing in this vehicle. Thousands of customers have had from 2 to as much as 6 transmissions put in these Odysseys! I am a student and put every penny of my savings into buying a vehicle I can not drive! any help in addressing this issue will be greatly appreciated.

68 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/12/2011

Approximately 2 weeks before the total transmission failure, vehicle started making a whirring sound and was sometimes slow to engage in drive after a cold start. There were also some erratic shifts. Vehicle was driven to Honda dealer where were it was purchased new and always serviced and maintained . (including transmission fluid services). Dealer diagnosed the repair as a transmission replacement at a cost of $4177. Because of the cost,I decided to consider my options and started to drive home. Approximately 2 miles later the transmission began to slip, lost power, and stopped dead against oncoming traffic as I attempted to turn onto a side street. (since this occured on busy state highway 303 with a 50 mph speed limit, there were a few anxious moments until I was able to push the van off the roadway). After a 2 hour wait for a truck, the van was towed to a transmission shop who confirmed the transmission had completely failed. This shop rebuilt the transmission for $3000. I am disappointed that Honda is unwilling to accept any responsibility for the failure due to the fact that the vehicle was purchased new and I was loyal to the dealership for all my service, and all maintenance performed as recommended. The vehicle was always gently driven and never used for towing or hauling.

69 Transmission Gear Slipping problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/09/2011

Transmission failure on Honda Odyssey 2003. Vehicle part of the recall that was issued in 2004. Oil cooler installed but it did not fix the original issue of the second gear having tooth chipping. Transmission fluid was changed as recommended, according to Honda. The car has 78k miles on it and the second gear is slipping. Honda never fixed the original issue of the second gear failing. This car was one of the first cars issued in the 2003 year model. I think this is still a safty issue because Honda never fixed the original problem.
