1 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2022 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/12/2021

2022 Honda Odyssey ex-l with 10 speed automatic transmission. Vehicle owned fewer than 24 hours. Purchased with 3 miles on odometer, with 130 miles on odometer when incident occurred while traveling southbound on i75 in ohio, vehicle was in motion cruising at 70 miles per hour. Suddenly vehicle started slowing down and engine started revving but no forward motion. Pulled over to side of road on shoulder and turned engine off for five minutes to let cool down. Restarted vehicle and when merging after fourth gear, engine exhibited same condition of no engagement between transmission and engine. Luckily was able to pull into rest area one mile from where the Odyssey started exhibiting the condition. Called roadside assistance and local Honda dealer who diagnosed condition following day of above approximately 40 miles per hour, engine and transmission are not engaged and engine revs without forward motion. Dealership stated vehicle requires transmission replacement per Honda technical.

2 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2019 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/01/2020

When the vehicle is parked, the head unit malfunctions and stays on, especially after being used for apple car play. It has left us stranded and had to be towed once, two other times, jumped as a brand new vehicle. More importantly, the transmission has issues. Between 20-30 mph, the vehicle disengages with the transmission, loses power, then clunks back into gear. It makes the driver and passengers unsteady, and causes unanticipated slow downs and speed ups. Adult passengers in my vehicle have yelled out in confusion over the loss of power and speed. When the vehicle is stopped, it sometimes hesitated to go into first gear, and then clunks into first, experienced as a neutral drop as if one is driving a manual transmission. Overall, the transmission is clunky, and leads to unexpected vehicle movements, unsteady feedback, and extreme discomfort and worry.

3 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2015 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/29/2020

Transmission power has started to fail to engage fully at highway speeds or low speed sudden acceleration. The third party shop showed me a Honda service bulletin 17-043 stating the transmission fluid deteriorates faster than normal. Somehow a software fix is going to address this problem.

4 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2014 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/09/2020

I was driving 70mph on an interstate. The battery light came on. There was no immediate change in vehicle performance and there were no odors present so I continued driving for several minutes towards the next exit. About . 5mi away from the exit, the abs, fcw, ldw, and brake lights came on, the air conditioner and console turned off, and the automatic transmission disengaged. This prevented the vehicle from being able to accelerate. The entire vehicle essentially lost power. The local dealer diagnosed the issue as an oil leak in the spool valve that then destroyed the alternator and fried the battery. The manufacturer (Honda) recenty issued TSB 20-023 detailing the problem and repair procedure, but it was limited to the source of the leak, not any of the other components that were damaged. My understanding of the incident leads me to believe a fire could have broken out due to the location of the leak onto the other engine components.

5 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/26/2015

Engine light and tcs light came on, gears stopped shifting at high rpms. Soon, transmission would not engage at all. Car failed to move on a busy freeway overpass exit. After several minutes with the engine off, I turned it back on and hobbled in first gear off the overpass. Mechanic said it was typical of 2004 Odysseys to have transmissions fail. Cost of repair far exceeds blue book value of car.

6 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/03/2014

The transmission disengaged at 65 mph and I had to keep cycling the gas pedal until the trans caught on at 40 mph and this went on until I brought it home. I was able to take it to the Honda dealer and they said I need a new transmission.

7 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/07/2014

Our Honda Odyssey's transmission failed under very scary circumstances---with my wife and disabled son attempting to merge onto a highway. As she tried to accelerate, the van’s engine revved, but the transmission did not engage----leaving the van coasting into traffic. Thankfully, she was able to leave the roadway just before a vehicle that was approaching from behind would have made impact. She and my son were very lucky. Prior to this incident, the transmission was not exhibiting any kind of shifting problems. In doing some research, I found that this is a known design flaw problem.

8 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/02/2014

Going uphill on a curve at about 35 mph at 9:45pm with a slight drizzle. The tcs and engine lights came on and gears disengaged. Gear was at d4. No power to drive the minivan uphill and van started to roll backwards and downwards. When accelerator was pressed, the rpm went up to 6000-7000 rpm but the gears remain disengaged. Suspect transmission defect. Set emergency lights on and roll over to the curb. Parked and hitch a ride home. Filed a complaint with NHTSA and reported it to american Honda on 8/4/2014 as this is a very dangerous event.

9 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/28/2014

As I was driving the car, the engine over revved but the wheels were not moving. I was on city streets making a turn - luckily I was able to coast to the side of the road without any incident but it could have been dangerous as the gears were not engaging. After I navigated to the side of the road, the car wouldn't move forward or backward on being put in gear. There was a smell of burning rubber - later I realized it was probably burning or overheated transmission fluid. On towing the car to the dealer, the dealer ran diagnostics and advised me that my transmission was damaged and needed replacement. For the past couple of days, the 'check engine light" and the "tcs off light" had been coming on and off occasionally. I had also noticed the vehicle not responding to accelerator pedal being pressed in a normal fashion.

10 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/31/2013

At lower speeds automatic transmission goes into neutral. The transmission will not reengage unless you place the transmission in neutral and back into drive. Unfortunately this happens during periods from completely stopped thru 2nd gear. Once past 2nd gear shifting patterns are always normal. This has been happening for over a year, yet the transmission still continues to operate, (ie. . Not completely failed yet) I have noticed that there has been a recall on my particular model (recall# 12v-573) however my dealer says that my vehicle is not part of that recall. I feel since this is a daily driver, that the malfunction of transmission will eventually cause an accident due to the fact that it happens during initial acceleration. I believe that if this was not a defect, then the transmission would have completely failed long ago. I merely think Honda should make corrections as stated in their recall notices.

11 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 05/25/2012

I was driving on a road trip and having neared my destination city, I had taken off the cruise control and exited the highway. After slowing down at the intersection, the car would not engage into second gear as I tried to accelerate. It continued doing this until I was able to stop and call aaa and have my car towed to the local Honda dealership. After running the diagnostics, the service advisor told me that the transmission is shot and needs to be replaced. Since it is a long holiday weekend my car is still sitting while they are closed and waiting to hear back on the estimate to replace the transmission.

12 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/25/2012

While driving my transmission would not engage. This caused an extremely unsafe situation due to the car being suddenly unresponsive while driving in 40 mph traffic. It could have easily caused an accident resulting in serious injury or death. Thankfully I was not hurt, however others might not be that lucky. The transmission no longer functions. After doing further research I see that Honda has had many issues with their transmissions that they have not addressed. Someone at the NHTSA needs to look into this before people get killed due to a faulty transmission design.

13 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/12/2011

Hi, Honda had a recall on the 03 Odyssey transmission for chipping of metal, over heating, etc. Right now my car will not engage from reverse to drive for 10-15sec and while driving will accelerate for no reason, which I believe are very major safety issues. Spoke to Honda customer care and they will not take care or fix these issues case# n012011-12-2800224 on 1229/2011. Thanks, a mathew.

14 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2004 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/19/2011

My 2004 Odyssey, with 77000 miles, experienced a transmission failure while driving on highway with no warning & no early indications of malfunction (slippage, engagement, etc), noticed tachometer revving higher than normal then lost of drivetrain power with engine still operating. Manage to exit highway and onto offramp before transmission disengaged from engine. The frightening thing was we coasted to a stop in a blind turn with vegetation hiding our position from other exiting vehicles ( sb i280 ocean Ave exit, next to city college of san francisco). Serramonte Honda service dept told me transmission no longer under original 60000 mile power train warranty & that he does not know of any transmission problems in the Odyssey model. Internet search reveals transmission failures very common with many Odyssey owners having to go through multiple power trains with no admission of design flaws for such premature transmission failures by Honda.

15 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 11/13/2011

While driving in heavy traffic with my 3 children in the car the gears suddenly were not engaging and the vehicle not responding properly and we slowed down considerably and without warning to drivers around us. During the drive home this happened several times. I was thankful to get home safely.

16 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/10/2011

No advanced warning for automatic transmission failure. Transmission failed while driving on busy parkway at about 9:00pm at night. Vehicle suddenly decelerated and had no forward drive. Fortunately, this incident occurred at night in light traffic as in heavier traffic the vehicle would have certainly been struck from the rear by a follwoing vehicle given the sudden and unexpected deceleration. Car was safety hazard as it was driven home in a single gear at no more than 25-30 mph. The transmission failed to engage it "limp-home" gear (1st??) on several occasions on the drive back home and became stuck in the middle of the intersections. This would occur when the vehicle would engage the "limp-home" gear for a moment (enough to pull into the intersection from a stoplight) and then fail or if the intersection was sloped downhill, releasing the brake would permit the transmission to "freewheel" like the trasnmission was in neutral (but it was not)and the vehicle would roll into the intersection. The car had to be turned off and restarted several times before the automatic transmission could re-engage the limp-home gear. Manual shifting of the gear lever was either impossible (I. E. Gear selector would not change) or ineffective (I. E. Limp-home gear would be selected but not engage and the vehicle did not move forward). Van has not been repaired and is located at my home as it is now dangerous even to drive on a public road.

17 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/23/2010

About a month ago, I had two occasions when my 2003 Honda Odyssey would not shift from park to reverse. Each time I turned the car off and back on and then it would shift normally. On 12/23/10, I was driving down the street when suddenly the gears disengaged. The tachometer revved, but the van was just coasting. After a few seconds, the gears engaged again. The has happened several times over the past few days. Today I took my van to the dealer and was told the van has fault codes p0740 and p0780. I need a new (rebuilt) transmission and a new ecu. The cost is $5101. 80.

18 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/14/2009

Nhtsa recall #04v176000 power train:automatic transmission regarding the forementioned recall, I do not believe that Honda's solution is only a short term solution and a safety issue still exists. The recall service work was performed 4/21/2004 by an authorized Honda dealer. However, the vehicle shutters when changing between second and third gear and will sometimes have a delayed shift between gears where the car slows down quickly while in limbo. Two safety issues are present. One, the car shutters and seems as though it's transmission will cause it to come to an abrupt and violent stop since it's moving at around 35 miles an hour. Secondly, if crossing an intersection after stopping or yielding to oncoming traffic, if the transmission disengages or goes into limbo between second and third, it presents the possibility of being struck by oncoming vehicle. The dealer, brown's Honda of glen burnie, MD, states that the transmission needs to be replaced in it's entirety as replacing components does not fix this problem - it is an inherent problem. I've verified the dealers statement with other professionals. With this said, I believe that Honda's remedy is short lived and to serve as a bandaid and would sincerely appreciate an investigation by the ntsb. Thank you.

19 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/13/2009

2002 Honda Odyssey. While accelerating onto the road/highway, the transmission fails to engage the next gear (3rd) and 'slips' - freewheels as if in neutral! multiple times this has happened, even when accelerating up a hill, and is very dangerous because we can't get into the traffic stream! Honda has refused to acknowledge the design flaw with their transmissions and keeps replacing them with 'broken' ones!! the Honda dealer says the transmission needs to be replaced, but as you can see on Odysseytransmission. Com, that transmission will have the exact same problem in about 30-40k miles!!.

20 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

While driving on the interstate my 2003 Honda Odyssey started to put out smoke from under the hood and the transmission would not engage. Luckily we were able to pull out of traffic without hitting any other cars. We were towed to a repair shop where they said the transmission overheated and due to the damage had to be rebuilt. There is a recall in place (NHTSA # 04v176000) for our vehicle for this issue. In speaking with Honda it appears recall work was done in 2004 (a revision to the oil cooler return line), but we still experienced the transmission defect. I just wanted to file the complaint in case others had found that Honda's repair solution had not been effective for them either.

21 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 06/09/2009

Transmission fail to engage to 3rd gear.

22 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 02/27/2009

Transmission disengages/slips on numerous occasions.

23 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2005 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/30/2009

This behavior happened a few times in the past according to my wife. The last time happened on 1/30/09 while I was driving on a city street under normal speed and suddenly the transmission lost power, the d drive failed to engage. I immediately move the gear shift several time to re-engage the d gear. Very unsafe, unpredictable and scare in a busy street.

24 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/12/2009

The contact owns a 2002 Honda Odyssey. The contact stated while driving at speeds of 20 to 40 mph, the transmission would not engage in lower gears. The contact would have to shut off the engine and when restarting, the transmission would function normally for a while. The dealer advised having the transmission replaced at the owners expense. There were no recalls and the vehicle was outside of factory warranty. The failure mileage was 64,000 and current mileage 67,000.

25 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2006 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 01/09/2009

I was making a three point turn in a parking lot and when I put the car in reverse the car would not engage. It acted as if it were in neutral. I have an appointment to take the vehicle into a dealership next week. Forums state the this has occurred quite often in Lexus.

26 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 08/19/2008

Transmission seems to disengage after slowing down and then accelerating and does the same thing going around a turn or through a traffic light. Car has 63,000 miles on it and to knowledge no one has worked on the transmission and supposedly it was supposed have a modification done on it at some time or another but not to my knowledge so I took it to my Honda dealer and they tell me it will cost $3983. 00 to rebuild the transmission , now from what I have read on the internet about his all Honda are having the same problem so why isn't Honda required to repair these if they are all going bad , just looking on the internet I must have seem hundreds of complaints about Honda transmissions.

27 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 07/17/2008

My 2002 Honda Odyssey ex # (mi 53,519) has failed to accelerate properly, transmission is failing to engage. The van then functions as if in neutral gear. This is extremely dangerous because it is occurring when driving in traffic. I took it to the Honda dealer and he informed me that I need a new transmission. He also informed me that Honda will not offer any assistance in the cost of this repair. This is unacceptable for a vehicle with such low mileage. Add to that I have discovered that this problem and Honda's response is not unique but is somewhat common.

28 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2001 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/15/2008

Traveling down I-75 near marietta georgia, traffic came to a near stop as tornado producing storm entered the area. The "check engine" and tcs light came on prior to the failure. The vehicle has 130,000 miles on it, but has been well maintained. When attempting to re-accelerate, the engine rpm's increased rapidly but the transmission did not immediately engage. When the transmission did finally engage, the van lurched forward with a very unhealthly sounding mechanical clunk. After exiting the highway, the transmission continued to delay engaging making it very difficult to seek cover from the storm. As the tornado sirens wailed and the hail starting coming down, my family and I found ourselves essentially stranded 8 hours from home in the midst of very severe and dangerous weather. I am the original owner of the 2001 Odyssey and purchased it specifically for Honda's purported reliability. It appears that Honda has known for years that this transmission is prone to failure. At a minimum, Honda should have notified all owners so that they could act accordingly - instead Honda allowed owners to unwittingly place their loved ones in danger. I'm a long time Honda proponent and I'm enraged that they would act with such negligence! not only are they responsible for endangering, but they disrupted our vacation, cost us a cab trip to the atlanta airport piled with bags for seven people as well as a week's car rental charge. After pressing Honda, they agreed to pay for half of the transmission cost but no labor.

29 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 10/29/2007

Sporadically when shifting into 3rd gear, the transmission seems to completely disengage, the engine rpm increases rapidly, and the car loses power. After letting off of the gas, the transmission will shift.

30 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 03/03/2007

For the past few months, when accelerating my 2002 Honda Odyssey from start, e. G. , entering a highway on an incline, occasionally the gear fails to engage, I. E. , pressing the accelerator increases the rpm to 5k without moving the vehicle. There have been occasions where I've had to pull over to the side. The symptoms were similar to the information on the transmission recall notice I received from Honda a couple of years back. I took my vehicle to Honda of westport, where the service manager (george) told me point blank that the recall campaign was over. After some persuading, they agreed to look at the problem, and said they couldn't replicate it. Last week, the check engine light came on. On calling the westport Honda service dealer, the service manager (george) told me the same thing (I. E. , the recall campaign is over). Frustrated, I took my car to the local mechanic who checked that diagnostics came back with code p703 (incorrect gear ratio), indicating that it was a transmission problem. I called back george at Honda of westport with my findings and he repeated the same "recall campaign is over" and I would have to bear all expenses to repair this vehicle. Given that the problem started back in March, just past the vehicle's warranty, I believe it is unfair of Honda to rebuff me and refuse to entertain the automatic transmission issue which is already well documented.

31 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2002 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 09/12/2005

(1) transmission failed to engage 2nd to 3rd gears while driving. (2) transmission failed and unable to drive the van (3) took the van to Honda dealer. They said the transmission needs to be replaced. Premature transmission failure. It is a known problem for Honda transmission. Some car/van does have extended warranty, but they do not have extended factory warranty for my van. My CO-worker's 1999 Honda Odyssey's transmission was replaced with extended factory warranty after the transmission failed. Why is my van does not have extended warranty? thank you.

32 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 2003 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 12/18/2003

My 2003 Honda Odyssey transmission suffered sudden catastrophic failure while driving on the interstate in traffic. The vehicle could not be driven any further and was left in a dangerous spot and required towing to the Honda dealer. The vehicle could be cranked and placed in gear but the transmission does not engage and the engine revs the same in both park and in drive. There was no warning of a transmission problem until some erratic revs appeared on the tach going from normal cruising revs of ~2k up to 5k a couple of minutes prior to the failure. The only other indication was the "check engine " light which according to the manual indicates an emissions system problem. . . Not a transmission problem. This happened Friday night and the dealer called sat morning and said the transmission required replacement. After researching the problem on the internet I see many other people have the same problem with their 2003 Odyssey transmission and in fact their has been class action suit on prior year and maybe another one that covers 2003. I am very concerned that Honda is aware of this problem and not doing anything. There was a recall and I took my vehicle in but the changes they made were not effective. Additionally, I understand that the filter is internal and cannot be cleaned or changed.

33 Transmission Not Engage problem of the 1999 Honda Odyssey

Failure Date: 04/23/2003

Had transmission problem on my 99 Honda Odyssey. Replaced it at 60000 miles at aamco transmission. Honda denied my claim because I did not bring it to the dealer. Now at 90000 miles, the engine light came on again and the shifting feels rough. This is a design problem that Honda tries to ignore. This transmission problem can cause an accident if the second gear does not engage while we are on the freeway.
