Honda Odyssey owners have reported 10 problems related to transmission stuck in gear (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Honda Odyssey based on all problems reported for the Odyssey.
Occasionally when driving at slow speeds the car struggles and lurches forward and loses power. It is very scary when it happens. It feels like it is stuck in neutral and you lose power. Problem is it doesn't happen consistently, and have not been able to take it directly to the dealer while it happens. I think it is dangerous, because I believe it could cause an accident one day. I've googled it and have found many other people with my age Honda Odyssey have the same problem, and many say that Honda cannot fix it. I think it usually happens when the weather is cold.

My 2014 Honda Odyssey does not shift properly most notably when the weather is very cold below 30 degrees and first thing in the am. Driving down the street it's as if I'm stuck in first gear and then suddenly the car shifts and it sounds horrible as if the transmission clunks very loud & then the car jerks forward from the car shifting. This started happening when my car was very new within the first 1-2 years. I have had it into the dealership a few times because of this problem and they can never seem to get it to throw a code for them. I even left it there overnight so that they could drive the car cold in the morning and it didn't happen for them. It is very random when it will happen? after reading many Honda Odyssey online chats everyone says it's the computer and you have to shut the car off and restart it to reset the computer. This has seemed to work and stops the jerky shifting for the time being. So now when my car starts jerking me down the road and it sounds like the transmission is about to fall out I have to pull over somewhere safe and turn the car off for a minute and restart it. I thought for sure there would be a recall by now but I guess I should have reported it earlier. To sum it up there is a problem with the computerized shifting mechanism that for some reason when it's cold outside keeps the car in low gears. I have had my car regularly serviced at the Honda dealership and every time I've had my transmission fluid changed they comment on how dirty it is? I explained the problem to them and no one can solve it?.

I just bought used 2003 Honda Odyssey with 160k miles and transmission is getting stuck between 2nd and 3rd gear. I looked online and seems that my model has same issue with 10000s of car. I like to have Honda replace my transmission free of cost. I read that there is safety issue while driving with this issue. I am afraid if I am driving and I could get stranded in middle of road if gear gets stuck.

As original owner of 2003 Honda Odyssey engine buying car from weir canyon Honda in anaheim hills California. My engine block light, tcs, lit up at 153,000 miles. I have been experiencing a major transmission problem between 2nd and 3rd gear as car seem stuck and I am unable to accelerate. This is not safe at all since my van can be rear ended when it's stuck in this mode. My mechanic advises everyone from not to buy any Honda as his shop rebuilds Honda transmission all the time and makes a fortune from the poor victims of Honda owners like me. . Read more...
At 115000 miles the transmission started getting stuck in neutral between 1st and 2nd gear. I took it in to a mechanic who said it looked like the transmission was failing but no codes were coming up. A couple weeks later as the transmission slipped my check engine light came on as well as the tcs light. I took it back to the mechanic who got the code p0730 and told me the transmission needed to be replaced. I got a hold of my dealer who could not help me but could replace the transmission at full price. Honda corp. Just hung up on me when I started asking them about the recall back in 2004. I spoke with a CO-worker about there 2002 Honda Odyssey and there transmission went 2 months ago with under 100,000 miles. He also had problems speaking with corp. & dealer. I will never buy Honda again!!.

We bought a used Honda Odyssey 2000 van with only 60,000 miles. The previous owner took meticulous care of the van and had it maintained regularly which is why we were surprised at 67,000 miles the transmission gave out. I was driving on a major highway when the gears started slipping. I was in a 50 mile per hour zone when the gears wouldn't shift and I was stuck in third gear. This was extremely dangerous and could have led to a serious crash. Luckily, I was able to get the van to the side of the road to a very narrow shoulder. When I researched this, I found that numerous people have had transmission issues with Honda vans. We inquired about getting it fixed under warranty but were told that we were outside of the 93 month parameter. The problem is that the previous owner had no issues with the transmission and therefore did not need to change the transmission under warranty (service bulletin 02-062). We will now have to pay $3500 for a transmission that should be recalled and should be replaced no matter the time frame. If it is a faulty transmission, they should be held accountable for this product. This situation could have been a lot worse had I lived in a big city and experienced these problems on a freeway. Something needs to be done!!!.

My 2002 Honda Odyssey frequently gets stuck in 2nd gear while changing to 3rd gear, occasionally shifts into a neutral state, and randomly shifts back into 2nd gear. Two dealers and american Honda have all refused to repair this problem which was identified as a recalled mechanical failure in the transmission on the 2002 Honda Odyssey's. The dealers want to charge approximately $5k to repair it with a replacement transmission. This is unacceptable and both dealers and american Honda should accept responsibility and be accountable for this apparent defect. They claim that the "oil jet kit" was to prevent the potential problem before it happen, but as a result that measure of preventable maintenance was unsuccessful. I would like my vehicle repaired as soon as possible at no charge.
The transmission was slipped in 2007. It was brought to accura dealer for checkup and was informed nothing can be reproduced. Since then the issue has been on and off. The transmission was slipped again between 2nd and 3rd geared and cel(check engine light) was on Nov 17 2011. The vehicle seems stuck in the neutral for few seconds on the highway and it was lucky there are not accident. The vehicle was brought to Honda/accura dealer again for diagonoses and no issue was able to be reproduced. . Call up american Honda service hotline, I was told it was beyond 3years/36000 warranty and nothing can be done.
2004 Honda Odyssey lurched backwards while in idle then accelerated out of the garage. The consumer contacted the dealership who told the consumer their best guess was that the gear was stuck between park and reverse and eventually popped into reverse.
