1 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2017 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 05/05/2021

After exiting an interstate highway and stopping at a stop sign, the auto-stop feature engaged. When the brake was released the engine started and the car moved forward a few feet then shut down completely. There was a momentary warning to put the car in park, but it disappeared when the electrical system completely shut down and all screens went blank. I pressed the brake pedal and the start button, but the engine did not start. I released and pressed the brake again and the car started. The transmission was in park and I had to push the drive button several times for it to engage. Luckily there was no traffic because I was blocking the exit and the road. After the engine started it took some time for all the systems to power up.

2 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2017 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 04/11/2021

Vehicle will not restart after engine auto idle engages. When lifting foot off the brake to begin driving car will not restart and says you must go into park and press brake. Radio and lights are still on. Even after shifting into park and pressing brake it will not start. After removing foot from brake and pressing stop car will completely turn off. We can then press start and car will usually start within three or four tries. This has happened about 10 times, with the last being in the center lane of a major freeway. Traffic came to a stop and when we started going again I was completely stuck in the middle lane with cars going all around me. Has also happened multiple times at stoplights and in drive throughs. I try and always disable this feature but forget sometimes.

3 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 04/08/2021

Car would not start after going into auto idle stop. Car went into neutral by itself. Had to put in park and it took several attempts before car would start.

4 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2017 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 02/26/2021

Auto engine idle will not start the car back up sometimes. If I forget to disable the auto engine auto before each trip, sometimes we will stop at a light or stop sign and the engine shuts off like it is supposed to. The problem is that periodically, the engine will not start back up when we are ready to go. The whole car shuts off and there is a specific order of pressing the brake and pushing buttons that we have to go through to start the car back up. Very dangerous while sitting in traffic. Has happened numerous times. Have taken to dealership numerous times with no solution. I have a video of it after it is shut down, but cannot attach it because it is more than 5mb.

5 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 02/15/2021

We have an ongoing issue with our auto-idle feature malfunctioning that began at about 20,000 miles. I have written a complaint here before, as have many other 2016 Pilot owners, however nothing appears to have been done to date. This is a significant safety feature when the auto-idle is engaged, foot is taken off the brake and the car completely shuts off, often times not starting back up without a jump start. The car completely shuts off, warning lights flash all over the dash and no matter what you try the car will not start back up. This has happened to my wife with our 2 daughters numerous times. Fortunately, there hasn't been an accident, but my greatest fear is one time there will be. Naturally this always seems to happen at busy intersections. We have taken the vehicle into Honda dealership where we purchased the vehicle too many times to count. They have replaced the battery, replaced the start/stop switch, cleaned out multiple error codes. Nothing has provided a permanent fix. We just had to have our transmission replaced at 70,000 miles! the problem reared it's head again today. This time my wife had to press the brake, the gas pedal (both with all her might) and press the start/stop button at the same time. Something isn't right. I'm convinced we have a lemon, however the dealer seems to think we don't have a case for that. Honda has to step in and take accountability. There are far too many 2016 Pilot owners having this same issue for Honda not to realize the valid safety concern we all have. Take a look at Piloteers. Org and you will find a ridiculously long list of frustrated 2016 Pilot owners all struggling with the same problem. I am urging you to take action to correct this problem. We purchased this vehicle for the safety features, however "safe" isn't something I feel knowing my wife and daughters are in this vehicle multiple times per day.

6 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 01/18/2021

Car is parked in my garage. Car will not start. Remote keyless start error. Called the Honda dealer. They said to have it towed in. Waiting on the tow truck right now.

7 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 11/26/2020

When I try to start the vehicle by pressing the start/stop button while sitting in the vehicle with my foot on the brake, the key fob in my hand, and the vehicle in park, the vehicle will not start. Also, after several attempts, if the vehicle does start, I get a message keyless start system problem and it often times takes several attempts to turn the vehicle off.

8 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 08/14/2020

The car stall didn't start after the idle start and now I have keyless start system problem.

9 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 06/14/2020

Remote system start error message received and then the vehicle wouldn't start. I was stranded at a gas station and had to be towed. Originally diagnosed as battery after I received a jump. We replaced the battery and had no issues for about 4 weeks. Now the error is back. Seems to be a recurring problem for 2016 Pilots based on my research. This needs to be a recall issue for Honda to fix!.

10 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 06/13/2020

I am getting a keyless start system error. I had a problem where the car would not restart at a busy intersection. Seems to be a common issue on this year/make/model.

11 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 04/02/2020

Car stalls and does not restart. Car has auto idle stop feature. When I come to a complete stop, the car completely dies and cannot be restarted. No emergency light, no lights on dashboard, cannot lock car, cannot put into neutral, must be towed. Car first started stopping at stop lights in city streets in 2017. Would take a few attempts to restart. Brought to dealer to state my concern that it would happen in the freeway and they checked and said everything was fine. On 3/19/20, driving in the freeway, I had to stop for traffic. Car died completely. I couldn't even turn on the emergency light. I had to open my door a little bit, stick my arm out and wave for oncoming traffic behind me. Semi trucks were quickly changing lanes to avoid rear-ending me. It was the most frightening incident that has ever happened to me. Car was towed to dealer and they said it was a transmission sensor error and claimed to have fixed it. 4/2/20 as my daughter and I were exiting the freeway, the problem occurred again. We stopped at the light at the end of the exit when the car just stalled. Again totally dead. It's just a parked car that cannot be restarted. Car was towed to dealer. I don't know what's wrong with it. The dealer's attempts to fix it did not work. The dealer was closed when we dropped it off tonight. This is a very dangerous situation. The car just dies and will not restart. There is not even a way to turn on the emergency blinking lights to alert other motorists of a stalled car. Had this incident happened in the dark, my daughter and I could have been seriously injured or killed.

12 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 02/07/2020

While stopped at a freeway off ramp. The car automatically shut off the engine per the start/stop feature. When the light turned green the car did not restart and instead completely shut off and put itself into park. I had trouble restarting while traffic built up behind me. This is not the first time this has happened. It is a very dangerous and disconcerting problem.

13 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 11/25/2019

The car's idle stop is not working properly. The radio consistently drops out and headlights flicker when releasing the brake to start the car after idle stop was engaged. Multiple times the car has now failed to start and appears to stall out, and makes me shutoff the whole car and restart it. This is a safety issue as some people do not realize and might rear end me. I have taken it to my local dealer, been told they cannot replicate it initially, to them validating the issue and wanting me to bring it back. I don't have confidence in them fixing the issue at this point as they do not have familiarity with it, yet I see many complaints about it online. I feel this problem is more widespread than Honda is communicating and the car has a fault in the auto idle stop design that they are not resolving.

14 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 10/24/2019

Twice now my 2016 Honda Pilot elite with auto idling stop feature has stalled at intersection lights. While stopped at the red light the engine goes off and normally when I lift my foot off the brake it restarts and accelerates when I push the gas pedal. However, in these instances when I lifted my foot off the brake and went to accelerate, the engine completely stalled. A couple of warning lights came on, unfortunately I didn't read which ones because I was at busy intersections. The car would not start even after putting it into park. It took about 2 minutes before the engine would start. Other drivers were trying to get around me, honking. The 2nd time, I was going to make a left turn and just had to wait until I could start it, watching in my rear view mirror hoping I wouldn't get rear-ended. I drive 75+ miles to work on a very busy and slow moving California freeway with lots of stop and go traffic. I am very concerned about our safety if this were to happen on a busy freeway where drivers don't realize I am dead in the water. I called american Honda and they advised me to get it into a dealer right away. I got an appointment for this am at 0700 but as of now (11:30am) haven't heard a word. They are charging me $125 just to run diagnostics despite the fact I have an extended warranty. The service person had a definite "could care less attitude". After reading on this website and others, this is happening a lot and Honda doesn't seem to have an answer. This is the 2nd major issue with this car. The last issue involved my car basically shutting down on the freeway at 70mph, going into a lower gear, every possible warning light on the dash lit up. Had to drive one mile on the shoulder to get it off the freeway. This happened twice to me and a "computer patch was done". It seems fixed but now I am not sure at all what is going on with this car.

15 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 08/09/2019

Keyless start system problem message on dash. Wasn't able to start vehicle for 5 minutes. Once started was not able to stop engine. This seems to be a recurring problem with 2016 Honda Pilot. This could be a dangerous issue under circumstances where car will not start.

16 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 06/19/2019

I have a 2016 Honda Pilot touring. 6 months ago, the auto idle stop feature began to malfunction. There are times when the car will not restart after the auto idle stop engages. I have to quickly figure out how to get the car started again while traffic is dodging me on the freeway. This has happened more than half a dozen times. The only reason it has not happened more is because I turn the feature off as often as I remember. I would like a recall to permanently disable auto idle stop. The feature is dangerous. Will someone have to die in an accident before Honda and the NHTSA does something about this problem? there are many reported cases of this happening and Honda is unable to fix it. . Read more...

17 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 06/10/2019

When engine auto idle is engaged, instead of re-engaging when foot removed from brake, the car stalls in one of three ways. Grade 1, the fan and radio shut off but the engine engages once gas is applied. Grade 2, the fan, radio and engine shut off but restart once gas is applied. Various warning lights then appear on the dash. Grade 3, everything shuts off and the car will not restart until you shift into park and press the start button several times. This is very dangerous as it happens at intersections when cars expect you to be moving and you're stalled out. I have video of these incidents and have provided them to the Honda dealer.

18 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 05/17/2019

We have had several issues but the most pressing is that the car will suddenly stop responding under acceleration. This has happened 3 times once very nearly caused a very bad accident with a big rig whilst we were entering a freeway. The car will suddenly not respond to throttle the gauges seem to reset and then the car will go. Similar to how the auto stop idle function works except we were not stopped we were under acceleration. We have also had several instances where the vehicle will not start after the idle stop has activated at a traffic light forcing us to turn off the vehicle and then restart it. We have take the car to the dealer several times but they have been unable to recreate the issue and assure us that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. . . Beyond the problems listed above the car frequently has electrical safety issues with the auto brake and collision detection, I cant even count the number of times that the car has suddenly braked out of no where, no obstacles or anything to trigger it, just decides we need to brake. These "safety features" should really be reviewed and tested better before being put into a production vehicle.

19 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2019 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 05/01/2019

I purchased brand new elite 2019 Pilot in April of 2019. Immediately after purchase I had horrible static coming through all speakers, at times vehicle would not start, randomly the vehicle would sense a collision even when I was only one on road, windshield wipers come on randomly and other electrical issues would occur, brake light flashes randomly. I do not feel safe driving this vehicle at all. . I have taken it in three times now and every time I am told that there is nothing wrong with the vehicle. I have been asked to take videos of it when it occurs. This is insane as my cell phone is disabled while I am driving. So, basically they are asking me to get phone, enable it and take a video all while I am driving with the vehicle doing all sorts of unsafe things. I have come close to being in a number of accidents due to the random collision braking occuring. I refuse to drive the vehicle on the freeway as I do not feel safe at all driving it. This has occured on the freeway, highways and city streets. I always drive in a lane where I can pull to the side if something occurs. I did not pay over 50,000 for a vehicle to not feel safe driving. I am tired of Honda telling me that they cannot find anything wrong with the vehicle. Basically implying that I am crazy and this does not occur unless I can get a video of it when it is happening. All services have been done at the morgan hill, CA 95037 Honda dealership. I have all paperwork on it but it is currently at dealership now again and the paperwork documentation is being attached and they have records in their files as well. I do not know what my next step is in getting help since the dealership just shared there is nothing they can do for me since they don't have a video and or witness these issues firsthand. Car serviced on 7/25/19, 4/13/20 and 9/18/20 at Honda dealership in morgan hill, CA.

20 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 03/09/2019

I have 45000 miles on a 2016 Pilot ex. I recently began getting a keyless start system problem error message in the instrument cluster. Engine will not start, have to constantly keep pressing the start botton and stepping foot break. Also notice my "walk away lock feature" stopped working. I check online and a lot of Honda Pilot owner are having the same issues. Please help investigate. Thank you.

21 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 02/20/2019

At 38000 miles vehicle displayed an error code relating to the keyless start. A week later the vehicle would not start. Unhooked the battery to reset the system and the error came back. Dealer replaced the start button but issue returned a few days later.

22 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2015 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 11/17/2018

After driving for an hour, turned car off for twenty minutes. When starting the car with the same key the immobilizing system went off. For two and one half hours car would not start. A tow truck had to be called. Then six hours later after towing putting the same key into ignition the car started. This is a family car my wife uses extensively transporting our family. I am extremely fearful of this defect reoccurring when I am not with her.

23 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 10/18/2018

Vehicle turns off completely when auto off feature engages while in a stopped condition. On two occasions, vehicle refused to restart for several minutes. The first time, the vehicle restarted after 2-3 minutes, the second time it happened, car would not restart until 10-15 min after the occurrence. During both occurrences, I was in a stop condition with foot on the brake, vehicle in drive. Dealer says battery tests fine and cannot replicate the issue, but I know there are others experiencing same problem. This is a major safety issue. Only out of shear luck, it happened to me while at a residential gate key pad punching in the code, and then today while in the drive thru of a fast food place. If this would happen on a busy street, at a busy intersection, while sitting in standstill traffic on interstate, etc, it could be extremely dangerous.

24 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 08/23/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Honda Pilot. The contact stated that the vehicle failed to start when attempting to drive. Also, while driving approximately 40 mph, the vehicle stalled without warning. The contact was not able to coast the vehicle to the side of the road. While in traffic, the vehicle restarted independently after ten minutes and was able to drive normally. The vehicle was taken to Honda cars of katy (21001 katy fwy, katy, TX 77450) where it was diagnosed, but the failure could not be duplicated. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and opened case number: 08934725. The approximate failure mileage was 29,000.

25 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 08/12/2018

The car continually stalls at red lights and other full stops after the "auto-shutoff" engages. The car fails to restart and results in dangerous situations in high traffic areas in the city. The car can not be moved easily because it becomes completely unresponsive, even disabling the flashers. It has happened repeatedly.

26 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 05/02/2018

The message "keyless start system problem" showed up in the information screen about a few weeks ago, it would come up intermittently, whenever I start the engine, and the message stays on the entire time the engine is runnning. When the engine is shut off, there will be a ding, and the message will stay on for a few minutes before going away. I took it to the local dealership, they had not encountered a message like that before, and could not figure out what was wrong. I already have over 42,000 miles on my vehicle, so the factory warranty has run out. Today I took it back to the dealership, since that message is still showing up, and I finally have the time to leave it for a few hours. The service advisor said now there is a code for that issue, but I would have to pay for whatever repairs needed to fix the issue. I feel that this should be a manufacturing recall issue, perhaps with the electrical system, or with the keyless start system, and that I should not have to pay for this repair. I'm afraid of what would happen when the issue gets worse, especially when I go on vacation, and the engine will not start because of an error with the keyless start system affecting the push button start. Again, the message does not come up everytime I drive. But today, on 6/28/2018, I have started the engine a total of 3 times while running errands around town, within 90 minutes, and this message has shown up every time I started the engine.

27 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 03/01/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Honda Pilot. While operating the vehicle and while at a stop light, the auto idle stop feature activated normally, but the vehicle would not immediately restart when the driver released the brake pedal and depressed the accelerator pedal. The failure occurred on several occasions. During the failure, several instructional prompts appeared, explaining how to restart the vehicle. On one occasion, the vehicle could not be restarted and was towed to sterling mccall Honda (22575 hwy 59 north, kingwood, TX 77339). While at the dealer, the vehicle operated normally and the cause of the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 29,000.

28 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2004 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 09/08/2016

Ignition key gets stuck in the ignition and does not turn. Several people have complained about this problem, but Honda is charging for the known defect in the tumbler system used with their special key system. People are told that this is normal wear, but this does not make sense that all cars expire at the same time and the fix involves replacing the entire ignition including the keys, leaving the owner with one set of keys for the doors and a new set for the ignition. My question, if the keys are worn, how do they still work for the doors. Once the switch is broker, the car will not start and the key feels like it is the wrong key.

29 Car Will Not Start problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 07/23/2016

Honda Pilot 2016 touring. Vehicle battery drains overnight or in a few hours for no reason. The vehicle would not start and would have to be transported to the dealership or have battery recharged for a long time. After recharge, safety equipment such as sensors, emergency stop, etc. Stop working. Contacted Honda and took vehicle to dealership multiple times. One time they replaced the battery and other times did something else but they are unable to resolve the problem. We believe vehicle is unsafe to drive. This problem seems to be encountered by many Honda Pilot 2016 owners which is reported online. They all complain of taking their vehicle to Honda dealership only to be told the dealership unable to resolve the issue.
