3 Starter problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 06/27/2020

I was driving on a dual two lane highway at 55 mph. At a cross road a traffic light was red, and I stopped the vehicle. The automatic idle stop shut off the engine for 1/2 to 1 minute, before the traffic light turned green. When I took my foot off the break, the car should have started, but it didn't. . Many of the dashboard lights came on, the car shifted into neutral. The cars around me moved forward and several honked, because I wasn't moving. Other cars were approach me from behind at speed. I tried to turn the ignition off and restart it. Nothing happened because the shift was in neutral. I exited the car and pushed it to the right turn lane just ahead and pushed the brake to stop once I was out of the driving lane. I put the car in park with my foot on the brake and tried to start the engine 2 or 3 times before the starter turned the engine over. Several cars went by at speed, and luckily no one wanted to turn right. The car is just over 5 years old and I am very familiar with its operation with the automatic idle stop feature, but this time it surprised me. I had replaced the battery after 2. 5 years of driving, and it is only 1 year and 10 months since it was replaced. I have read anecdotal accounts of similar incidences by other 2016 Pilot owners who had no reason for the incident. The car did not have any further problems that day, because I cancelled the idle stop feature for the trip home. I feel I could easily have become a statistic along with my wife had the traffic been moderately greater that evening. Other have registered complaints about this problem on this website. I am having the battery replace tomorrow, even though the dealer hasn't yet evaluated its condition.

4 Starter problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 06/07/2020

The following error code appeared several days ago; keyless start system problem. Honda informed me that the push button starter required replacement. I installed the new unit as instructed, and the error message went away. Today (two days later) the error message re-appeared. I have since noticed that there are many problems reported online by Honda vehicle owners about this issue.

5 Starter problem of the 2017 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 03/01/2020

At apprx 50k miles (March 2020), display panel intermittently indicated "keyless start system problem" and now (sept 2020) that error code is constant. For a few days recently the error code disappeared, but it came back. . . The code shows when you start the car. The car does start every time but I am worrying that one day it may not. I googled the problem and did some of the remedies (change the fob battery, press the brake for 30 secs while the car is on) but the error code remains. Seems a lot of others are having this issue. I called the local Honda dealership and spoke with a service rep who said he comes across the problem a few times every week and does replace the keyless starter button.

6 Starter problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 12/17/2019

"keyless starter system problem" light comes and goes. Mileage 50k - have changed key fob battery, issue still randomly displays - seems to be more often now. Find that if I try to not rush the turn off process it will sometimes help - ie put car in park - wait a few seconds, then shut off vehicle - doesn't always prevent message - quite unnerving wondering when I wont be able to start the vehicle - this has been going on for last 10k miles.

7 Starter problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 08/08/2019

Our Honda Pilot shuts down while being operated, typically while attempting to resume driving after having been stopped at intersections, making turns, red lights, etc. All electrical components become unresponsive, including starter, shift controller, hazard lights, etc. Typically takes to 5 minutes to restart, leaving us stranded in traffic; an incredibly dangerous situation. This has occurred (5 times so far) with the "auto engine idle stop" engaged and is suspect. 1st attempt by dealer to diagnose & repair involved replacing the battery despite testing "good". Shutdowns continued; the last occurred in a 5-lane highway with my wife and 3-year old child on board. 2nd attempt to diagnose & repair, took 4 weeks and a suggested repair of replacing the battery (previous battery less than a year old) and a new starter @ $1,600; even though the technician stated both were "good". Conversations with the dealership/technicians acknowledge the suspected problem electrical/computer based but the on-board computer does not record these events. The dealership/technicians state they reported and researched this issue via their in-house tech site but we were told this issue is unknown and isolated to our car. Our solution being a mutually acknowledge, unnecessary repair. I debated their $1,600 "solution" and questioned warranty coverage and was informed if not done, would be recorded as "customer refuses repair". When I asked if the $1,600 would be refunded when the issue resumed (since well agreed the suggested repair was not the solution), I was informed "no". We have not done the repair. A simple internet search shows this is not an isolated problem as we were told and is even recorded here on the NHTSA website numerous times, verbatim to our experience.

8 Starter problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 10/27/2018

Keyless starter system error message and it no longer auto locks.

9 Starter problem of the 2017 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 06/13/2018

We live in san francisco and do a lot of urban driving (aka, there's a ton of stop signs). When the a/c is not on, the engine turns off almost every time we stop. After owning the brand new vehicle for about a year, the radio and lights started turning off when the car would start back up at a stop sign/light. The power to the lights actually started to dim before they turned off completely. Eventually, the car failed to start back up on its own a few times. We took it in to the dealer and they replaced the starter under warranty. The problem went away. We're now 2 years + 4 months into owning the car and the lights are starting to dim again when the car is starting back up at stop signs/lights -- I'm hoping it fails again before the 3 year warranty is up so we can get it replaced again for free. This feels like a manufacturing defect to me -- one that's exacerbated by the frequency of stops in an urban environment and a starter that isn't built to withstand that kind of use. This should be investigated for a recall.

10 Starter problem of the 2016 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 01/06/2018

The keyless start system appears to be faulty. The vehicle has begun to intermittently, but increasingly, show a keyless start error that prevents the vehicle from being started with the starter button. Multiple attempts are sometimes necessary to get the vehicle to start. A critical system such as this should not fail in this fashion, completely disabling the vehicle, given its current mileage of 44,610.

13 Starter problem of the 2011 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 05/16/2012

Vehicle purchased new in 2011. No issues until mid 2012. When attempting to start car, the starting sequence works but engine does not turnover. The starter clicks, but nothing else happens. The first time this happened, car had to be jumpstarted to get started. Battery test was conducted with no issues. The second, third and fourth times it happened, the car eventually stated with no issue. The vehicle is located in southern CA, so cold weather is not a factor. Battery checks each time indicate no issue with the battery. Most recent time, on 2/23/14, same exact problem.

15 Starter problem of the 2003 Honda Pilot

Failure Date: 05/11/2011

Car ran away in reverse as if it had a mind of its own. Full weight on the brakes but the car kept accelerating. Crashed into utility pole encircled with old car tires. Car bounced off and then crashed into the pole over and over again. Hit gear shift into forward. Engine screaming really high revs, car raced forward and I did everything I could to avoid hitting parked vehicles and a pond as car kept going faster. With nowhere to head but golf course or highway, I steered onto a farm field and drove a half mile until I was able to pull out the keys from the starter which stopped car. I did not think I was injured at time but I ended up with whiplash which meant I lost about six months income. Honda refused compensation, or paid for any of the repairs of the car with exception of the key interface for starter . Honda claimed thnothing wrong with car. Said had my foot on accelerator. However, Honda dealership charged me more than $3,000 to fix a completely destroyed braking system how could I have had my foot on the accelerator and destroyed the brakes? Honda refused to buy my car and decommission it because they said car was perfect. Downright rude afterward. I did not let anyone else drive the car and used it as infrequently as I could. Seven months later, I was in an underground parking garage and same thing happened. The car accelerated into thesolid concrete wall just four feet ahead. The impact destroyed car. Front end crumpled in, the engine damaged and all airbags deployed. This from a four foot collision.
