Automatic Emergency Braking Problems of Hyundai Elantra - part 1

The emergency braking system activated and began slowing down the car on two occasions: sometime in the fall of 2022 and on 09/01/2025. In both instances, I was driving about 65mpg on an interstate. There were no cars in front of me to cause the system to activate.

I have taken my car in twice due to my car braking when there is not a vehicle and or object in front of me but there are vehicles right behind me that have to brake but crain denies that there are any issues. My engine light came on a couple of weeks ago and I took it to auto zone to have a diagnostic test done. The report states that it has something wrong with the transmission/transmission line and or fluid. When I looked it up online it stated that there are recalls on engine pistons that could cause the diagnostic test to read that it's the transmission. My car is a 2020 Hyundai Elantra value edition but according to your website, there are no recalls!?.

The driver and passenger headlight has been replaced and the bulbs but the headlights keep going out was told it is an electrical problem and contact manufacturer. Also emergency braking did not work in recent accident nor did forward collision warning.

The transmission is slipping to the point that I have almost gotten in several accidents due to impatient drives and the car not engaging in gear like it should. Vehicle also has several electrical faults reverse braking system engages at random with nothing in its way,the key not in vehicle warning will sound randomly while key is in vehicle,horn stopped working out of nowhere,while washing vehicle with keys in pocket vehicles key warning system will sound about every 30-60 seconds only when washing vehicle,random front collision warning system with nothing in front of vehicle,seat height adjustment randomly stops working but the rest of the electric seat adjustment works then seat will start working again at random. When taken to dealership for diagnoses the dealer refused to diagnose electrical issues unless I paid out of pocket even though vehicle is under full warranty and all systems listed are warrantied.

While driving highway speeds (65mph-75mph) the emergency braking system randomly activated causing my car to slow to almost a halt and swerve itself in the middle of the highway almost causing multiple accidents. It has happened 2-3 times over the past 2-3 months. Brought to a dealer and it could not be "duplicated" so I was sent on my way worried about this car.

November 2023: purchase vehicle. September 2, 2024: driving on highway 50-55mph in right lane. No one/nothing in front of me. Clear day. Vehicle collision alert starts beeping, vehicle abruptly brakes and steers itself into the left lane. I feared for my life and also for the person who was behind me. September 16-17, 2024: drop off vehicle at dealership for oil change. Notfd service advisor of Sep 2 incident, requested investigation. Was told I'd have to pay for diagnostics and they would likely not find anything wrong. I was also told in summary: "nothing seemed wrong, incident could have been a glitch, we can talk about turning off the entire safety feature. " -- I felt completely dismissed. Since early 2024 (shortly after purchasing): • vehicle randomly disables all safety features while I am driving. Yellow icons appear on my dash, and dinging noises keep alerting. This happens almost daily! I showed photos and videos to a second dealership, and sent them to Hyundai corporate (Dec 2024). No one has made any resolution for this. • noticing moisture build-up in window crevices. Rear windows have rolled down while vehicle was parked overnight on several occasions. November/December 2024: • vehicle making high pitch whistling noise. Problem diagnosed as cracked heater console. Sealed/repaired twice, in two different spots. Why wouldn't they just replace it?! • horn not working. I was unaware until dealership tested it. • rear doors barely opening. This is a serious safety hazard. People need to be able to get out (and in). Brought vehicle in, was told they "lubed it up", yet the doors are not opening fully again as of December 2024-January 2025. December 2024: • contacted corporate to file complaint. Since I filed in December 2024, which is 13 months after purchasing vehicle, I was told I don't qualify for illinois lemon law buyback option. One month too late?! dangerous and annoying problems, and I'm stuck dealing with this? my vehicle is a death trap!.

Since 2/2/24 13 episodes of all safety features failing including blind spot monitor, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, and others. Last occurrence on 8-8-24. On one occasion the car failed to accelerate in the middle of an intersection, the car did move slowly and operation returned to normal after turning off the car and pressing the 12v reset button. Diagnostic codes found on car app include both c164286 and c164202 for all 13 episodes. Despite being told this code is "for the speed sensor because it saw a voltage drop from the battery system" the dealer claims there is nothing they can do because they can't recreate the problem. This is highly dangerous to my family and others as the safety features can prevent accidents. The most concerning is the car suddenly losing acceleration as this could potential happen where there is no safe way to get off the road in time prior to an accident. This loss of acceleration has been reported by many other people on the facebook group I am a part of called Hyundai Elantra hybrid owners. The loss of safety features occurred after all recalls were performed as of 8-8-24.

The vehicle applies automatic emergency brakes when another vehicle passes close by from behind in an adjacent lane, when the blind spot collision avoidance assist, feature is set to “active assist. ” the owner’s manual states that this feature operates when the turn signal is turned on in the direction of the detected vehicle. However, my experience shows that the car applies brakes even when the turn signal is off and the vehicle is driving straight within its lane, without changing lanes. As per NHTSA description automatic breaks to be applied if the driver ignores the warning and tries to change the lane. But Hyundai design applies brakes even if car driven within lane without any warning before applying break.

Rear backup camera suddenly stopped working and when in reverse the sensors kick in and breaks the vehicle when there's no object or vehicle behind. Also the code for the backup sensor came up but dealer didn't do anything.

Car applies emergency brakes when another vehicle passes close by at higher speed from behind in adjacent lane when the blind spot collision feature in my car is set to "active assist". As per the owner’s manual page number 7-46 to 7-52, the collision assist is designed to operate when turn signal is turned on in the direction of detected vehicle. Also, it is mentioned that the audible warning will sound. In actual scenario car is applying breaks even when turn signal is off, driving straight, no lane change. Also, there is no audible warning sound when car applies automatic brake. Owner’s manuals write up is not matching with the issue I observed, and this is very serious safety issue.

Breaks lock my car after driving for about 30 minutes and traction control light comes on.

Multiple times driving on highway at posted speed limit and vehicle displays emergency braking system and just comes to complete stop on highway with oncoming cars going 65mph. Has happened 3 times before.

--steering was affected and brakes. The vehicle is damaged and may be available for inspection. --safety was put at risk as the car did not engage in emergency brakes and veered left into another vehicle. --n/a; unaware if problem has been reproduced --inspected by insurance reps and auto repairmen --no there were not any warnings, unkown when it first appeared.

I am submitting this complaint because in the fall of last year 2023, I received a recall notice in the mail from Hyundai advising me of a safety recall with the abs module and risk of fire. As of today, the manufacturer has not made any efforts to remedy this issue and I am advised to park my vehicle away from structures to avoid fire. In order to keep myself and family safe I park my vehicle on the street in front of my home, but will not be able to continue doing this for much longer. Because of hoa regulations I will be fined if I continue to park my car on the street and will be forced to park in my driveway or garage. This has caused major inconveniences in my life as well as the worry that my car could become a risk to myself or others due to this safety recall. I do not believe that Hyundai has taken the appropriate measures to resolve the issue. I would like further investigation to insure the manufacturer does the right thing to protect not only myself, but other consumers who are affected by the recall. I contacted Hyundai on 4/13/24, received an apology; however I was not given an estimate of when they will have a resolution available. My car has done 4 false automatic emergency braking incidents while I was on the freeway (all times). There was no vehicle in front of me or the sides and my car started applying emergency brakes with a message pop up on the digital dashboard. Looks like the system is falsely detecting there is a car in close proximity. When this happened, I noticed the back car hit the brakes and immediately switch lanes. The sudden brake could cause a collision. The car allows me to take control after a couple seconds but when the warning appears I can not. I have not reproduced or verified the case with a dealer but the instant has happen 3 times in the past month. It has not been inspected by any other parties.

All safety features randomly appear and go off as well as while driving 80mph down the highway the speedometer and rpm gauge both dropped to zero. Vehicle has been at the shop multiple times and stayed for three months where they could not duplicate the issues. I have pictures and videos of multiple instances. Dealership replaced back up camera and was told that was the cause for the safety lights going off and within a week of getting vehicle back the forward collision light has come on two different occasions when no vehicle is around as well as two instances when a vehicle slammed on brakes in front of me and the front collision sensor did not go off at all.

Good afternoon abs module has a major recall on this vehicle how is it possible were a remedy has not been found as of this date. I do not have the liberty on not using the vehicle as its the only transportation I have to get around. This needs to be repaired ASAP as this puts the driver in an uncomfortable situation I have to take this vehicle in on the 13th of this month to fix the other two recall I feel I should get a loaner vehicle until the abs id fixed on this vehicle please get back to me on the current situation thank you.

Driving on a highway at 80mph, adaptive cruise control was engaged. It was a clear, sunny day, around 55 degrees f outside. We were 3. 5 hours into a 4 hour drive. There were no cars in front of the vehicle. There were other cars in the lanes immediately to both the left and right of us, as well as a car behind us. The car gave a warning for automatic emergency braking, although there was nothing to avoid. No vehicles were merging into us, no one was going to rear end us, and nothing was in front of us in or near our lane. The car then started braking automatically and attempting to swerve/turn automatically. I had to fight the automatic system to stay in our lane and not crash into the vehicles immediately to the left and right. This was extremely dangerous at highway speeds.

Frustrated because this recall is now 5 months old with no remedy available. As a senior citizen I am not confident driving this vehicle with the possibility of a fire while driving. I would like someone to put pressure on Hyundai to get this remedied quickly. I have another vehicle but I should not have to not drive this vehicle. I want my vehicle fixed!.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? ans: the forward collision warning didn't detect any vehicle ahead of me at the time of collision which caused the crash. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? ans: me and my CO passenger were luckily not injured but got almost killed during the collision. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? ans: the dealership or the Hyundai motor America couldn't replicate this issue. They didn't answer the question to why the detection didnt happen during the crash and why my automatic emergency braking failed. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? ans: yes, Hyundai motor America had a 3rd party company named bosch inspect the vehicle to check for any fault during the time of cash. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? ans: no there was no warning signs displayed during the time of collision and no signs after the collision as well. Funny part after the collision my front bumper came off, my headlights broke, and many other components were damaged like my air conditioning and my seat heater and stuff but none of those issues showed in my blue link report(a report that shows any signs of warnings or crash detection's) that came to me the next business day in my email from Hyundai.

Over the past 4 months, this car's safety sensors have randomly activated on 4 different occasions. The car will suddenly brake when this occurs, which puts me and the other drivers around me at risk of crashing. Each time, I've taken it to a Hyundai dealership for repairs. They always claim they can't recreate the issue and don't fix anything. I've provided the dealer with pictures and videos of the warning lights on my dashboard. It doesn't seem to help them diagnose the problem.

My car has 11000 miles. 6 times I have had the emergency braking come on when there have been no cars close to me (4 times by 3500 miles and twice from 3500-11000). One time no other cars even in sight. I have been on the freeway and on side streets, so from 20 mph to 65-70 mph. It is startling and I'm afraid will cause me to get rear ended as it's instinctive to step on brake when this happens. I mentioned this to the dealer I purchased it from at my 3500 and 11000 mile oil changes and they said they couldn't reproduce it and everything was fine. It's only happened 6 times in 11000 miles so it is unlikely the dealer will be able to reproduce. But especially going freeway speeds it is not safe to slam on breaks for no reason and I am afraid of getting rear ended. I was looking online to see if this problem had been reported and someone with the same issue was recommended to report it to this site, so I am doing the same. Thank you.

In the winter of 2024 I became aware, during a routine pre-trip inspection under the hood of my 2013 Hyundai Elantra gt, that the level of brake fluid was low enough not to be visible in the "overflow" container. About a quarter of a quart of brake fluid was then added. I then began checking the brake fluid level often and noticed that over time, I had to add brake fluid at least once a week. The problem increased to the point that I was going through a quart of brake fluid each month. In the meantime, I attempted to get various mechanics to find the leak but had a hard time convincing anyone I was leaking brake fluid as there was never a warning lamp or message activated. After paying for other "suggested" repairs such as replacing brakes the leak continued and at times the brakes became squishy until finally a mechanic acknowledged a leak coming from the area of the abs module actuator which he said was "fried". My car had to be in a Hyundai shop 90 miles away for three weeks awaiting the abs actuator part and repairs as I was advised the vehicle was dangerous and I could lose the use of my brakes. Again, this issue would have never been highlighted if I had not been diligent about checking the brake fluid and could have ended with much more serious consequences than inconvenience and expense. Again, there was never a warning light indicator to emphasize a potential hazard.

Driving at 70mph, another vehicle that is sitting on the grass on the side of the road decides to pulls out in front of me as I'm approaching(no warnings occurred from the collision assist system). I swerved to avoid the other vehicle and then he decides to pull into the lane that I'm trying to get into to avoid him. I break hard but not hard enough to lock the tires up or set off the abs. Moments after that incident, faults begin to pop up on my instrument cluster, check lane departure warning system(ldws), check autonomous emergency braking system(aeb) and check Smart high beam system. I figured that since some of these are safety related that I should report it. My vehicle has approximately 38000 miles.

Urgent safety recall (251) for fire risk was started 3 months ago. As of 12/13/2024 there is no remedy or any timeline for remedy. Owners in snow conditions (ohio) can't be reasonably told to park their Hyundais outside in winter. Maybe I don't understand the word urgent. . .

Automatic emergency braking appears to be getting falsely triggered. This happens when I am pulling out of parking spaces, even with nothing besides or behind me. This also happens when cars in lanes beside me pass me.

I’m having issues with braking and steering and I have made complaints to Hyundai and they have failed me they brush it off as though I need a new car but there are dangerous issues with this car. I also notified Hyundai corporate office on several occasions and a case manager by the name of jose didn’t help at all nothing was resolved he only left voice messages and nothing was done.

Have experienced at least half a dozen instances of unprompted initiation of the automatic emergency braking system within having the car for about 3 months. Would say that this system is malfunctioning. Automatic emergency braking occurred for seemingly no reason in all instances while travelling on the highway at approximately 70 miles per hour. There were no vehicles in front of the car and no vehicles switching lanes in front of the car. However, there were vehicles behind the car and in other lanes adjacent to the car but behind the car. The unprompted braking is dangerous for the cars behind and could cause a rear end collision where the car behind the drivers car would not register such excessive braking due to the lack of action prompting the automatic emergency braking. Additionally, this can cause driver loss of control due to the extreme response. Problem has not been able to be confirmed by dealer or independent service center. No messages prior just the indicator on the dash identifying the engagement of the automatic emergency braking.

I bought my 2021 hyuandai Elantra on September 7 2023 almost 2 months ago and the emergency braking system comes on pretty often while driving my vehicle on the road and freeway so the brakes will lock on me whenever the car is in drive which could cause a serious crash and probably cause damage over time to brake pads and other things this problem has occurred over 5 times within 2 months.

The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated while driving approximately 65 mph, the forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking brake light illuminated, and the vehicle experienced phantom braking, causing the tires to skid and the speed to be abruptly reduced. Moments later, the forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking light turned off and the vehicle operated normally. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure, but no assistance was provided. The failure mileage was 750.

- brake and fuel leak smell - yes - yes - no - no.

There are have been three significant safety issues with the car. 1. The forward collision alert system goes off without warning and with zero debris or cars in front of me. This has happened three times, putting my safety and those around me at risk. 2. The car has suddenly had what feels like the rear brakes locking up without warning midway through a turn. The car wheels were still spinning but the car stopped moving. This put me directly in harm's way. 3. While my foot was off the accelerator while I was approaching a stoplight, the car suddenly accelerated and lunged forward, nearly causing me to hit the car in front of me. I have taken the car in three times and called the dealership about this one more time and have had no resolution; they claim to be unable to replicate the issue. There were no warning messages prior to the failures.

On highway, no issues/no bad weather emergency brake came on for approximately 20 seconds for no reason while travelling 70 mph.

3 lanes going down to 2 (leftmost closed). I move over to far right lane out of middle lane. No cars ahead of me in right lane. Some cars in left lane. In lane for about 100 yards when. . . . Emergency collision warning appears and warning is made with sound and car pumps to brakes. Nobody was in my lane within 40 yards. Nobody moving into my lane. I have had it slow down and give collision warning when a car moves to right turn lane from right lane and I pass that car. But this time the alert went off and brakes were automatically strongly applied as if I was about to plow into another car without any obvious threat. Dealer checked alerts and no obvious system failures or codes appeared. Turned off automatic braking for now (and as a safety concern, it resets to the default safety braking each time in restart the car). 8:41 am 7/18/2023.

Abs module short circuit, I am aware of the current recall in effect for 2011 Hyundai Elantra's but it should be noted that my vehicle also has the same issue, short circuit causing the abs motor to run constantly. Issue was discovered by mechanic, I opted to disconnect the abs module, as replacement is unaffordable. Is there any plan to expand the recall to include my vehicle?.
