Hyundai Elantra owners have reported 48 problems related to automatic emergency braking (under the forward collision avoidance category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Elantra based on all problems reported for the Elantra.
On a few occasions (3?) the cars’ automatic emergency braking feature activated while driving at both highway and normal speeds. On none of the occasions was there inclement weather or a “slick” condition on the road. The feature would activate, give a visual and audible warning, and then DE-activate within a few seconds. When the feature activated, I felt the car jerk a bit to slow down, and sort of swerve in one direction before righting itself. There is a possibility that the feature activated because I had manually enabled the auto hold feature as well which I usually do.

1. Emergency braking system - came on screen in car - and car took control and began to break 2. I was terrified on two separate occasions because I had no control over my car. . . . The first situation was when I was on the highway in the slow lane driving approximately 65-70 mph with no one in front of me - suddenly as the car behind me exited off the highway and merged into the off-ramp - my car suddenly began to brake on its own - for absolutely no reason - and then a few seconds later I had control of my car again. The second situation was when I was on a city street in the fast lane (a 4 lane road (2 lanes on each side of the street with a middle verge for people to turn left). I was going approximately 45 mph with no one in front me but there was a car to the right of me (in the slow lane). As I came up to a truck that was stopped in the middle verge lane (waiting to turn left) - my car once again suddenly began to brake - for absolutely no reason - and then a few seconds later I had control of my car again. 3. I took it to the dealership - they informed me there is nothing wrong with my car because they could not duplicate the problem. 4. I do not believe it has been inspected by the manufacturer - I told the dealership they can keep my car for as long as they need to and find out what is going on because the car is dangerous since it is taking on a life of its own. I am not pleased after reading through everything on the internet that apparently this is not an uncommon complaint, yet, nowhere have I seen any resolution to this complaint, so I am now furious that the dealership seems to think it is ok to tell me that there is nothing wrong with my car. 5. No there was no warning lamps prior to the car taking a life of its own.

Receiving intermittent warnings to check automatic emergency braking system, lane departure warning system, and automatic high beam light system. All three warnings occur together and happen intermittently while driving. Problem may or not begin when first start driving. The problem will also seem to rectify itself after a period of time then begin to cycle again several minutes or hours later. Will occur at any speed or while idling.

The contact owns a 2023 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving at highway speeds, the forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking brake light illuminated, and the vehicle experienced phantom braking, causing the tires to skid and the speed to abruptly decelerate. Moments later the forward collision avoidance: automatic emergency braking light turned off, and the vehicle operated normally. The failure had occurred on several occasions. Additionally, the vehicle had experienced unintended acceleration, causing the vehicle to lurch forward. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who was unable to determine the cause of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of failure. The failure mileage was 1,500.
Driving approx 40 mph on city street with no cars in front of me. Car dash flashed red advising engaging emergency braking and then did. Brakes applied for a couple of seconds and then stopped and warning went away.
1. False emergency braking when car from back side passing. Today I was driving in the left lane (lane 1) at ~43mph. There was no vehicle in front of me and I saw a vehicle applying emergency brakes with a message pop up. At the same time there was a small truck passing me from behind in lane 2 at a higher speed than me. Looks like the system is falsely detecting there is a crash from back and applying brakes. I have been forced to park my car outside in case it catches on fire due to the faulty brake system that cannot be fixed. This puts my car in danger of vandalism and harsh winter conditions. This is unacceptable that Hyundai has not yet found a way to fix the dangerous brake system!!.

I was traveling on a road headed to east bound 1-80 when my aeb engaged and it caused me to swerve to the left and the aeb slammed into the braking system. It lasted about 30 seconds and then clicked off and did not do it again until a few days later when traveling on the same road the aeb engaged again at the same spot causing my vehicle to swerve to the left. It then did it a third time while traveling in town at 45 mph the aeb slammed into the braking system for about 20 seconds and then released. It was very scary and not provoked as this could cause a very severe accident if not fixed.

I was driving down a highway at around 60 mph with no one around me. As a car started to pass me on the left, my Elantra started sharply turning to the left and stopping. The dash started beeping with emergency braking lit up. The system activated on its own for no reason.
Abs hecu unit has failed, thus posing a safety risk. All brake lights (abs and warming brake lights), in addition to check engine light are illuminated on dash. Faulty relay recall was taken care of in timely manner (recall 188), but now fires are starting in other vehicles due to failed hecu unit (which dealership and independent mechanic has confirmed that I have). More recalls for earlier Hyundai years need to be included in recall 218 or a new recall implemented to avoid cars catching fire due to failed hecu (my car has not caught fire as of the time of this report).

On 2/26/2022, while driving east bound 134 at night. Aeb of my 2022 Elantra kicked in. The first time aeb kicked in hard and I lost control of the car for a split moment. The warning sounds as the aeb activated and I swerved slightly (within my lane). This happened while I still had sufficient safety distance with the car in front of me and before the car in front of me began braking. The second time this happened was 10 minutes later, when there were no cars next to, behind, or in front of me. Same thing happened where aeb suddenly activated under normal driving condition. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. This sudden braking puts me, my passenger, and car(s) behind me at risk. Potentially this puts cars next to me at risk too. The problem is currently under inspection by the dealer at cardinale Hyundai in corona, CA. Dealer so far has notified me the problem was unable to be reproduced and did not find any system or parts out of the ordinary. The vehicle has not been inspected by the police or insurance. This is a brand new 2022 model Elantra purchased on 12/31/2021. There were no prior warnings lamps, messages, or other symptoms prior to the failure. Dash cam video clips of both incidents are available upon request.
