Hyundai Elantra owners have reported 47 problems related to warnings (under the forward collision avoidance category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Hyundai Elantra based on all problems reported for the Elantra.
Forward sensors in vehicle have been failing while driving rain or snow since 2021; would go way on its own. Most recent failure has occurred with no debris or obstruction to sensor on a clear and sunny day. The sensor failure has been stagnant and will not go away, increasing a safety concerns while driving.

The car now shows a warning "check forward safety system" and cruise control, understandably does not work. I have not had any collisions or accidents for this to occur. There seems to be no recall from Hyundai, however, this appears to be a safety issue that needs to be addressed by Hyundai.

This is a repeat incident. While driving, the speedometer stops working, tachometer, all of the collision warning systems start going through a self test, the check engine light comes on, and most concerning is the power steering. It becomes heavy, as if it is working at half power. The dealer kept the car for over a week recently, and they said that they were unable to duplicate the issue. It happened again while I was on a road trip , and I stopped by five star Hyundai in albany GA. The service advisor was aware of similar issues have occurred on Hyundai's, but that they were too busy to look at it. She wouldn't even come out of the building to look at the car and wasn't interested in looking at my video. I tried to upload video to this form, but was unable to do so.

Front sensor problem. Sensor check forward safety system. Abs, auto hold light came up out of no where. No damage to sensor.
I was driving in completely clear weather on [xxx] . No cars were within at least 100 ft in front of my vehicle. Suddenly the emergency braking system alarm flared and the brake engaged. This could have caused someone tor rear end my car but luckily no one was behind me. The brake also fairly quickly disengaged. I took it to pearson Hyundai where I had bought the car ([xxx]). They had the car for a couple of days and said they found nothing. They could not duplicate the incident. I would not have wanted to ever drive the car again as is, but the technician pointed out I could leave on the warning but eliminate the braking in settings. I am reporting this because if this happened with a child in the back seat on a road like the 95 it could do incredible harm information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

While traveling on a bridge with a very steep incline, the forward safety system light came on, which disabled the cruise control. We could not resolve the warning light issue, despite taking it thru a car wash, hoping that the sensor was just dirty. The warning light remained on for several days, then went away. One month later, on a sunny, dry day, the light returned. I made an appt at the local dealership, where the car was purchased and they told me that the front sensor was out of alignment and I most likely hit something, which I did not. $370 for the alignment and since they assumed I hit something, it voided the warranty.
Several times, including yesterday, my forward collision avoidance engaged by braking suddenly and strongly and inappropriately, almost causing me to be rear-ended. I was nowhere near the car in front of me, and fortunately due to traffic was traveling below the speed limit. This seems to happen whenever there is an overpass above the road. I have reported this to Hyundai, and they don't seem very concerned. Very dangerous. I would think there could be a software or sensor update that can correct this situation.
Car was breaking hard because of active assist despite that no car was in front. It was breaking consistently until I finally was able to disable the active assist. Luckily, there was traffic and driving at less than 20mph but this also happened some time last year at the same area where there was no traffic and was going at a minimum speed of 45mph and to have the active assist break hard put me at great risk of getting rear ended. I have footage from the dash cam which I unfortunately cannot attach as it's more than the 10mb limit.
High beam assist, check rear cross-traffic safety system, check blind-spot safety system, check forward safety system, check lane keep assist system, traction control disabled. All of those messages came on while driving. Rear backup camera quit working, reverse lights do not engage. No remedy for recall still. Vehicle is unsafe to operate without recall being fixed. This is my only transportation, fix it!!!.
Since 2/2/24 13 episodes of all safety features failing including blind spot monitor, lane keep assist, forward collision warning, and others. Last occurrence on 8-8-24. On one occasion the car failed to accelerate in the middle of an intersection, the car did move slowly and operation returned to normal after turning off the car and pressing the 12v reset button. Diagnostic codes found on car app include both c164286 and c164202 for all 13 episodes. Despite being told this code is "for the speed sensor because it saw a voltage drop from the battery system" the dealer claims there is nothing they can do because they can't recreate the problem. This is highly dangerous to my family and others as the safety features can prevent accidents. The most concerning is the car suddenly losing acceleration as this could potential happen where there is no safe way to get off the road in time prior to an accident. This loss of acceleration has been reported by many other people on the facebook group I am a part of called Hyundai Elantra hybrid owners. The loss of safety features occurred after all recalls were performed as of 8-8-24.
The car was giving me an issue with the forward radar blocked which was coming and going as if the radar was loose. This issue persisted for a week and the error was still coming and going after every 10-15miles of drive. Later after a week the error was constant screen and the radar is still intact to the car. Error on the screen: ######forward safety system disabled. Radar blocked. #####.
When passing under a bridge or traveling underneath train tracks, the forward collision warning would activate causing the car to brake when no other vehicle is in front.
My 2022 Hyundai Elantra sel's rear parking camera, rear cross traffic warning and forward colliion warning systems have stopped working a couple of days back. I have checked online for any resolution, and it appears I am not the only one facing these issues. There are a good number of drivers who have reported similar issues. Hyundai has not issued an recall/fix for these issues and the dealer is unable to tell me if the issue is covered under warranty (I have about 45k miles on my car), unless I pay $220 per issue to diagnose first. That will get me to near $660 before I know anything about how to fix it. I would appreciate if you can please investigate these issues in 2022 Elantra sel.
Check foward safety feature dashlight came on while driving, my blue link app told me the dtc c162078 chassis alignment failed front radar on Jun 4th 2024 while in park and idle my steering wheel kept going side to side, I recorded it not sure if that had something to do with this happening on July 2, 2024 and my safety is in jeopardy I feel due to the forward collision not working, Smart cruise control not working, made appointment at Hyundai dealership and I showed them the code bluelink told me to show them and they said they have to diagnose car themselves and the cost would be $169. 99. I had to call Hyundai customer care and get a claim number because dealership said they had to charge me. Two days I waited for dealership to call me the lady stated to let dealership know to waive diagnostic fee, I was told they would waive fee but I would need to pay $497 for part and $500 for labor which includes labor and recalibration, I told them I am financing a car I don't have safety features for, so I believe this should be listed as a recall or it should be fixed free of charge, being this is no fault of my own. No accident, didn't hit anything , I was driving at night and smooth roads. Dealership wanted me to lie to my insurance company and say I hit pothole. I told her no because that would be a lie.
At around 93k miles my hecu unit apparently malfunctioned at the same time as the left front tire speed indicator. All of my safety features abs, adaptive cruise control, lane departure, lane keeping etc do not work because of this.
My 2023 Hyundai Elantra has started alerting me while driving that I was going the wrong way down a road. The alert goes something like: warning entering into wrong way detected. This occurs when I'm driving the correct direction. I've googled the issue and other Hyundai owners have documented receiving the same message. I believe this is dangerous if one is driving someplace unfamiliar and receives this message. It has the potential to alarm a driver into making a u turn and traveling into oncoming traffic.
All safety features randomly appear and go off as well as while driving 80mph down the highway the speedometer and rpm gauge both dropped to zero. Vehicle has been at the shop multiple times and stayed for three months where they could not duplicate the issues. I have pictures and videos of multiple instances. Dealership replaced back up camera and was told that was the cause for the safety lights going off and within a week of getting vehicle back the forward collision light has come on two different occasions when no vehicle is around as well as two instances when a vehicle slammed on brakes in front of me and the front collision sensor did not go off at all.
Dash lights come on randomly while driving it disables all safety features, engine ticking , randomly my driver side window goes down.
I was driving on the highway at the posted speed limit when the warning "check forward safety system" came up and remained on my dashboard. The cruise control stopped working also. The light remained on even after stopping and starting the car and has remained on ever since. I have never been in an accident nor has my computer system reported any collision. My Hyundai blue link app gives me the following dtc: c162078. It started on 2/7/2024. My collision detection system does not appear to be working at all and my cruise control no longer works. I'm very concerned about it malfunctioning based on other entries on the NHTSA. Gov website. I took the car to Hyundai service center and they are trying to convince me this is due to a collision and warranty will not be covering it. They tried to charge me for diagnostic even though I already had the error code on the Hyundai bluelink app. They confirmed that my computer has zero reports of any collisions. The service tech said, and I'm quoting, "the system is very sensitive and a swift kick could cause it to malfunction. " that sounds like a manufacturing defect to me. I have never been in an accident with this car, there is zero visible damage to the front bumper, and my computer has no report of an accident. The dealership urged me to contact insurance. My major insurance company told me this was absurd, would never be approved, and is clearly mechanical. They also mentioned anecdotally that this problem has been coming up a lot for them with modern Hyundai models. Then I called Hyundai corporate and they have escalated the issue, agree it sounds mechanical, and will be contacting me in 3-5 business days. They apologized profusely so I am still holding out hope for warranty coverage. I believe the dealership is trying to blame me for this mechanical failure to avoid expense on their end. I have had many software-related issues with this car.
While driving on the highway, engine light comes on and then car shuts off mid drive. Days later, tire pressure light comes on and stays on showing good pressure. The car doesn't properly shift gears. Luckily I didn't have an accident. I have a case opened with Hyundai, but unable to get diagnosis until March. Car hasn't been consistently operable since purchase 3 years ago, as you can tell by my mileage.

2 times on freeway and 1 time on city streets, no vehicles within 100 yards and vehicle came to complete random stop. On freeway, tires skidded it was so abrupt and had neck pains for a few days thereafter. One time also on city street, corrective steering pulled shaply to right almost causing accident. Called Hyundai and the representative had no advice or care to even intake the issue for records. Not a safe vehicle especially since the engine has already failed and the ac has been replaced. It's now a frankenstein death trap being a danger to myself and others but they do not care.
On December 24 2023, the vehicle's forward collision warning failed. My son has a learner's permit. He was driving the car under my supervision. He pulled into a parking lot and hit a light post. We did not receive a warning, nor did the automobile automatically apply the brakes to avert the collision. There were no injuries. There was no property damage, except for our vehicle. I did not notify the police. In retrospect, we never hear alarms or warning when pulling into our narrow garage. Our other vehicles with the same safety feature do offer an alert in that context. I think the forward collision warning system is defective on this Hyundai Elantra. I have filed an insurance claim and notified the dealership by email. Next steps are pending after we hear back from our auto insurance claims adjuster.
On Saturday December 16th my vehicle was parked as I was shopping. When I returned to the vehicle and started it, lights began to light up on the dashboard. They included the rear collision, front collision, airbag, parking brake, battery, tires, blind spot, and others. I called Hyundai and they said that they did not receive any communication from the vehicle stating that there was a problem. The front and rear cameras stopped working and I could no longer tell if my turning signals were operational as I didn't hear the normal clicking sound. It was difficult to turn as the steering wheel was tight. When I first went to the dealership, they refused to take a look at the problem. After filing a complaint with Hyundai, I was finally able to take the vehicle in on yesterday. They also are confused because the initial test showed that there was no problem. They now have the vehicle and are trying to find the cause. This is very concerning because in addition to basically driving blind, according to the manufacturer book, continuing to drive with specific light on could cause engine problems. I also was no longer aware of the speed that the vehicle was traveling nor how much going. The dealership says that it will be several days before they can get to the cause. There was no warning prior to all of the lights coming on and the vehicle has not been involved in any accidents.
I was driving on the highway three days ago, and the forward safety went off. It was raining heavily, this happened to me once before and as soon as the rain cleared, it went away. This time it has not gone away. The safety remains disabled. I am unable to locate the sensors to see if maybe there’s mud or some thing blocking it.
One day I was on the highway driving and the front collusion safety warning appeared. I thought the warning went off because the sensor was dirty due to dead bugs. However, I pulled over and the sensor did not appear dirty. After awhile the sensor went off on its own. Then a few weeks late the front collusion safety warning appeared again while I was driving on the highway. The warning has not fixed itself. I cannot use my cruise control. I took it to the Hyundai dealership and they told the me senor is off alignment and it will cost $500 to repair because they have to remove the entire bumper. I have seen on Hyundai forums this is a common problem.
Forward collision warning system continues to engage dangerously and inappropriately, almost causing me to be hit from behind, as I always leave plenty of room in front. This is very scary and very dangerous. Software updates have not remedied the situation. Hyundai motors seems completely uninterested.
I was pulling into my driveway to do a 3 point turnaround and my cars forward collision warning came on, then the tire pressure light as well. There was nothing around me. I put the car in park shut it off and left it off. I figured if it the lights were still on and it wouldn’t move I’d call the dealership in the morning and have it towed again!! I started it after it was off/ not running for 2 hours and it was gone.
As I started driving my Hyundai Elantra, the digital dash and infotainment screen went black and then I got a message that my Hyundai bluelink profile along with its settings had been reset. I did not initiate this reset. I never heard anything from the manufacturer about this incident either. This momentarily caused me to lose sight of my speedometer and it reset all my adas settings such as following distances, warnings vs active assists, etc.
I was driving on the freeway & the engine just cut off. I lost complete power but luckily, I was able to get to the side of the road without any incident. About a month ago, the same thing happened but I was down the street from my house so it wasn't a big deal. The day after, the front collision light went off twice while I was driving. My particular car VIN number is not on the recall list.
On three occasions while turning out into an intersection my steering wheel will lock up and my forward collision warning system will engage and my just stop in the road. Out of those three times, my car has been towed to the dealership twice. The dealer has been working very hard to identify the issue while working with Hyundai tech services. They have poured countless hours and money into this car and still have not been able to identify and correct it. My vehicle has become a deathtrap waiting to happen.
I was traveling in the rain and a check forward safety system warning appeared on my dashboard. There was nothing in front of me to set that off. I notified the dealership and they said it was an alignment code and must have gotten hit. ( which I doubt) so wasn't covered under warranty.
My father was involved in a car crash, front end into a wall. Apparently, the front end collison warning did not sound and the auto braking system never engaged. Prior to the accident, the front end collsion warning would come on intermittently, but the dealer checked it out and stated it was working normally (san bruno Hyundai). After the collision repair, the warning light comes on and the car has been at bakersfield Hyundai now for over a week, but they can't find anything wrong with the warning system, but the system does not function (no warning of collision and auto braking does not engage). Our accident total was $10,000, lucky, no one was seriously injured.
Driving on highway, dashboard reported "check forward safety system" and "check Smart cruise control system". The car then disabled both while I was driving. This has happened 6 times to me. The first time I brought it to dealer and they stated it was a calibration problem. They reset it and I had no problems for a while. The problem has occurred 5 times more and will stay on for about a week or so and then just go away. It works again and then occurs again. So, it is intermittent and recurring. Each time the diagnostic code reported by the software to my phone is c162078. I see the 2018 kona had the same exact problem and a software update TSB was put out there. . Read more...
Check forward safety system message. Smart cruise disabled.
For the past 2 years my forward safety system light on has been on in my car. It has turned off and back on repeatedly but has now been on for about 6 months. Hyundai dealerships are estimated a week or two of labor to fix which is extremely expensive for rental cars and outlandish that I bought this brand new and it is already giving me issues. No damage has been had to the car in any way.
