37k miles. It started with the engine running roughly, so we replaced a coil ourselves. Seemed to fix the issue but a week later there was an intermittent noise from the engine which sounded like a very small exhaust leak (like pffffft). Occasionally, also intermittent, the engine would make a very loud clanky noise. Car shut off without warning while driving <5 mph. Our mechanic said the code was for the 2nd coil, so we replaced all 4 & spark plugs - just to be safe. Two days later, the same noise issues returned and the car shut off twice while driving in a well-trafficked downtown area (5-10 mph). It did not make noise or stall while idling. We had the car towed to the same mechanic, no codes this time. He replicated the issues by letting the car idle for an hour, then driving it 5-10 miles, it made noises and stalled while going up a very slight incline at <5 mph. He said it sounds like something to do with a loss of oil pressure sending the engine out of time, and the loud noise is the crankshaft. I don't know anything about cars and am just repeating what was told to me. At this time he drained some oil and found metal shavings. He said he could look into the problem but he would have to pull the engine and probably take it apart. He didn't want us to waste money trying to diagnose what seems to be a known issue and a blown engine. Also noted that there are few, if any replacement engines out there. In the past few months, I've had a tire sensor malfunction, the radio/media screen go blank multiple times, and the passenger seatbelt notification goes off even when it's just my cell phone and wallet on the seat. All of the electrical issues self-resolved so I didn't even have time to get too annoyed before this major engine failure. Three weeks from the first noise until this point.

I am the second owner and bought it from a Hyundai dealership with 45k miles on it. The car currently has 53k miles on it and the engine failed. I was driving the car and heard a knocking sound and without warning the car shut off. Luckily I was able to pull over and avoid an accent but had just gotten off the beltway. I got it towed to a aaa certified garage and they said they have seen the problem frequently with Hyundai. I had purchased an extended warranty from a 3rd party and luckily the damage is covered under the 3rd party warranty. However, the engine is being replaced by a refurbished/salvaged engine so I won't know whether or not this issue will happen again and it has hurt my resale value because it will now be listed in the carfax.
The motor started making a clicking noise very faint at first then over time it got louder then the engine light came on we had the car towed to the dealership we purchased the car. We were told that it needed a tear down to determine if the car needed a new engine they did that, then we were told since we were loyal customers had purchased 3 cars from massey and it had 104,000 miles 4 thousand over warranty that Hyundai would probably cover part or all of the cost! we were told that if Hyundai didn't cover the cost that it would cost us a couple of thousand dollars!. . . So we told them to fix the car Hyundai was going to cover some of the cost didn't know how much though! we were never told. . . And we've never been told how much Hyundai covered. The car needed a few minor repairs like the serpentine belt which we needed to pay for but we ended up paying $2300. 00 dollars we have talked to other Hyundai owners that have had similar problems with their engines just wanted to know if there were any recalls for the engine?.

1. Low rpm approx 300, rough idle. A/c usage increses the random intermittent occurrence. 40,000 miles when issue was noticed. 2. Relay switch, rapidly turns on and off. Usually at stops and idle. (sound location under hood/ engine compartment. ) 32,000 miles when issues was noticed. 3. Passenger side, front occupant seat sensor. Overly sensative, warning for seat belt when no passenger. Cell phone and or weight less than 5 lbs. 5,000 miles when issued was noticed.
The crankshaft pulley stripped from crankshaft! about 30k miles before we started noticing engine noises - loud ticking noises. After having my spouse park the vechicle because was hard knocks, I took it out with my daughter to take her to guitar lessons and to listen to it as I drove. On the way back to the (less than 3 miles) the engine died as there was a loud screech/knock. I restarted the enigne and drove back home. The coolant and oil was everywhere. That's when I notices the pulley was loose and I was able to pull it off the crankshaft. The oddest thing I've ever seen. The engine (I believe) still starts but ticketing does persist. Not sure what happened but clearly the engine had some issues with it. There was nothing we've done with the vehicle other than normal, highway driving. I've contact corporate Hyundai and they have indicated it's not longer covered and no work can be done on it. My concern - outside of 5k lost on the vehicle is this is a major concern for all the vehicles out there - especially at the lower mileage. I freaked out on the road when I heard the noises and felt like my engine completely fell apart. My safety was my concern. Something is wrong with this engine and it's not just mine. If it happened to me. . . A similar occurrence is happening to others. I sense Hyundai is not doing it's part to rectify this issue especially with such a core/critical part of the vehicle. I've lost confidence in their vehicles. . . Especially with lack of ownership of the issues. (vehicle is still at dealership at the time of the writing). I'll be picking it up today. I"m estimating the date this happened. . . Because I didn't mark it down. I tried to tow it myself to the dealership with my truck but I took the bumper off so finally got a real tow in to picker it up and relieved it.

While driving on beltway doing 55 mph the vehicle won't accelerate and also makes sounds when pushing on gas the rpm will be moving back and front even when car not moving. Car smells like something is burning. The car will start to slow down and shut it self off. All lights will turn on then I shut car off completely then turn back on and it starts up like nothing happened this has happened multiple times. Then when sitting still at a light the car shut off.
The contact owns a 2016 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that the timing chain and the motor were off sync and the vehicle would not start and stalled several times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who stated that the timing belt was loose, which caused the vehicle not to start. Leaving the parking lot at walgreen in tonawanda,NY. I was backing out with my foot on the brake. Putting the car in drive. The car leaped into a very high accelerated speed like a jet with the engine racing. The brake did not help. The car hit the barrier between the sidewalk and the store and the engine burst into flames. The distance was only a matter of yards. The airbags and seat belt kept me from going thru the windshield the force of the crash totaled the car. There was no one in this area of the parking lot thank goodness it was 10am Sunday morning. I do not know who called the fire dept and police. . This is a very serious problem. This situation happen so fast you don,t have time to blink. I am now left with no car and a twisted back.

Our 2012 Elantra began making knocking sounds during cold starts. The noise was fainter when the engine was warm but never disappeared completely. The sound became louder when the weather was colder. When I originally took the car to the dealer, I told them that I thought the problem may have been the timing belt but was informed that the 2012 had a timing chain and not a belt. When the noise became too loud, I finally took it back to the dealer for a diagnostic check of the engine and was told that it was a defective connecting rod bearing and a new engine was necessary. I am aware that the 2011-2013 sonata was recalled in 2015 for the same problem but thought that the Elantra was exempt.

Pulled over to shoulder on florida turnpike to adjust seat belt and the car started a very rough idling and would not engage in drive. Reported it to dealer and Hyundai motor America and following was their reply: -dealer: this is a characteristic of these vehicles that they don't know how to correct -Hyundai: they are aware of the problem and are working to resolve it. In the meantime I am driving a car that is not reliable to me from a safety standpoint and two dealers in miami, doral and lehman Hyundai service managers have told me that there is nothing they can do until the factory tells them how to correct the issue, your assistance will be very much appreciated.
On March 4, 2006 I purchased a pre-owned 2003 Hyundai Elantra with 33,855 miles from buhler & bitter Dodge located on route 35 in hazlet, new jersey. At the time of purchase I was advised that all used cars are certified pre-owned vehicles and are put through a 135 point check prior to being put on the lot. The Hyundai that I purchased passed this 135 point check and still had the remainder of the factory warranty which was 5 years or 60,000 miles. The balance of this warranty would be transferred to the new owner. The car ran great and like all of our cars in the past it was garage kept and serviced in accordance with the service schedule issued to us from the dealer upon purchase. On August 22, 2007 I drove to staten island for a doctor?s visit. On my way home- while traveling on the garden state parkway-the car appeared to be losing power as it related to my ability to maintain speed or accelerate. For my safety I began to move over to the shoulder and proceeded to shut off the car. Upon restart nothing occurred so I turned the ignition off again. There was no sign of trouble aside from the lack of power (I. E. No indicator lights illuminated, no smoke or noise was coming from the car), it just wouldn't start and then slowly everything appeared to shut off including the electrical power. At that point, I sat and waited for help to arrive. A gentleman from julian?s garage named scott arrived with a tow-truck and after trying to start the car himself stated that the either the timing belt went or the head gasket failed. Based on everything shutting down, it appeared that it most likely was the head gasket. He then towed me to a gas station near my home. Although disturbed by the situation and the fact that it was clear I would be without a car for a few days, I knew that I had the warranty and was covered.

Sunday sept 11, 2005- my car would not accelerate on I-285 west bound I had to coast over to the side of the road amidst Sunday traffic, they confirmed that my timing belt had popped car towed to midas gave me a TSB report stating that the timing belt covered had cracked and that is what made the timing belt pop, which in turn is a manufacturing. I called the consumer affairs and left a complaint with matt-file: 939520 he said I needed to have a Hyundai dealership look at the car to make sure in fact this is the problem, bc I have over 147,000 miles on the car and it is no longer under warranty. Jim ellis Hyundai looked at my car in service and did a diagnostic test, stated that the maintenance on the upper and lower cover is what caused the timing belt to break. They could fix the timing belt and the upper and lower cover and the crankshaft seal -which is leaking. Jim calls me back and states that the engine is gone and would need to replace the engine for the car to work again. He said that midas must have been trying to start the car with a new timing belt which locked the engine up, I told him that midas just checked the car and nothing was wrong with the engine, jim had another technician to look at it this morning to see if the upper and lower cover is causing the timing belt to break. Jim calls me back and states that the crankshaft sealed had leaked onto the upper and lower cover and caused the timing belt to slip, which in turn caused the crack into the upper and lower cover. He stated if midas had repaired the oil leak then the belt would not have broke. I relayed the message to midas and they state they will give me a notarized letter and fax over the TSB report stating that the engine was in running condition before the car was turned over to jim ellis Hyundai and that the part is defective. Now I am at a point were my car is still not fixed, I have no transportation and that the engine is ruined. I have filed a complaint with the federal trade commission ref: 6726217.

When driving at variable speeds, the engine cuts out then cuts back on. No consistencies to when or why it cuts out. Check engine light stays on for weeks at a time. Contacted dealer and have taken it in three times for this. Dealer apparently finds nothing wrong. First service, dealer kept car for 10 days only to replace the gas cap. Second and third visits found nothing to substantiate check engine light cause. Yet the check engine light comes on periodically and stays on for days. After 44000 miles, engine sounding different than when purchased. Burning smell comes form engine periodically, smells like a belt burning but no apparent belt is cinged. At times engine does not appear to change gears smoothly.

Since the purchase of my car new I have had the transmission replaced three times, the pulse generator replaced twice, and the electrical wiring replaced twice because it kept buring out. I would repeatedly take my car into fairfax Hyundai for service due to slipping transmission, car cutting off and steering locking up while driving on the beltway at 65mph smoke coming out of the exhaust etc. Finally on 17 March 1999, approxiamately 4 weeks after paying 350 dollars to have my engine cleaned (recommended by service manager) my engine blew at 15 mph. Oil was spurting out everywhere and the dealership has refused to give the the Hyundai complainant line number. The customer service rep. Stated that I would have to get that number from the service manager at the dealership where I purchased the car. . The service manager tommy has refused to give me the number but states that he is willing to work out a reasonable rate for parts a labor. Granted I have 78,000 miles on a 97' however these are all highway miles 167 miles roundtrip to work. All scheduled maintanence was done. I do not think nor feel that I should have to be saddled with this lemon any longer nor should I have to pay for any repairs since the car has been going back for major engine problems since 6/97 three months after purchase.
Engine warning light comes on 8 times/seatbelts won't latch/transmission slips/poor acceleration/exhaust smells like "rotten eggs"--.
