4 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/10/2021

While driving on the highway at 70 mph I heard a knocking sound, there were not any warning lights on. I turned down the radio and a/c so I could hear it better, moved to the right lane and slowed down, a red oil light flashed on briefly and the knocking got very loud. I exited the highway at the next exit approx. 1 1/2 miles down. I pulled over and turned the car off, had it towed to the Hyundai dealership in venice. 2 days later they told me it had no oil in it. 5 days later they said it needed a new $8000 engine! I have always kept up with the maintenance and oil changes. I was 2000 miles over this time, but that should not leave 0 oil in the car. Approx. 60,000 miles on this vehicle. And if oil was getting low why didn't any lights come on.

6 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/15/2021

A ticking/knocking noise is going on in the engine, powertrain. It's been happening since I bought the vehicle and is worse in cold weather. It is believed to be a valve train issue. The knocking gets worse when I accelerate, also. This appears to be a known problem with 2013 Hyundai Elantras, but there isn't a recall for the engine. I contacted Hyundai and they've been slow to respond. My vehicle is currently with the business that I bought it from. They're using the quick, temporary warranty to get a new used engine, but I'm concerned that the same ticking/knocking noise will occur with the new used engine, because they refuse to use a different brand engine. I'd prefer that Hyundai do a straight up recall for the engines that consistently perform this way - with a knocking noise that hinders the performance of the vehicle.

7 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2020 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/06/2021

Tl the contact owns a 2020 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that while driving 30 mph, the contact heard a knocking sound coming from the vehicle before the vehicle stalled. The pushed the vehicle off the roadway. There were unknown warning lights illuminated. The vehicle was towed to san leandro Hyundai (1066 marina blvd, san leandro, CA 94577) where the mechanic topped off the engine oil. The vehicle started operating normally however, the failure recurred. The vehicle was diagnosed by the same dealer and the contact was informed that the engine needed to be replaced. 8 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/18/2020

My daily driver began to make a knocking noise and my dashboard break light indicator came on. I immediately scheduled service with my Hyundai dealer. But it did not make the (2) days wait. While driving at highway speed the front end began to intermittently pull to the right as if the right front brake was being tapped independently. Within minutes all of the electrical shut off and the engine stalled. I drifted to the side of the road. After several attempts the electrical did come back on but the engine would not turn over. I had the vehicle towed to closest Hyundai dealer, who said the engine needed to be replaced and all that was available was a used engine with 60,000 miles on it at an approximate cost of 5,000. 00 dollars with no guarantee that it may require additional repairs.

9 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/29/2020

My engine, without any prior warning signs, suddenly started to make a knocking noise approximately 5 minutes after driving it. Within a few miles on the highway, the sound got louder and heavier, and the acceleration became very weak. I pulled over and stopped the car. When I tried to restart it was so hesitant to do so that I called for a tow. Upon inspection the engine was considered dead and had to be very expensively rebuilt. I keep up with my regularly scheduled oil changes and have maintained the car properly for the duration of my ownership. This malfunction came out of nowhere and was no fault of my own.

13 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2014 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/30/2019

While driving on interstate 8e just before pine valley, in lane one, my vehicle suddenly began making a loud knocking noise. A moment later, the oil light came on, then the engine light and then the car stalled and could not be restarted. Luckily, as soon as the lights came on and the car stalled we were able to make it to the right hand shoulder. Once there we tried to restart the vehicle but was unable to do so. The vehicle was towed to frank Hyundai. Yesterday we were informed that the vehicle's engine is seized and requires a new engine. I am the second owner and have only had the vehicle for 2 yrs and it only has 87,000 miles on it. It has been well maintained. There is absolutely no reason the engine should have seized suddenly as it did. All vehicle fluids were checked and operational safety checks were performed and were good prior to our trip. We are lucky to have not been hit by another vehicle when this occurred. I understand that this is occurring in other Elantras of my same year in addition to the other Hyundai vehicles that have already been recalled. It my urgent request that this be investigated before someone does get injured or killed. I also request that Hyundai inclued the Elantras with same the affected years of the sonata and santa fe's, such as my 2014 be included in the recall.

14 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2014 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/20/2019

After driving on the highway the engine started making a significant knocking sound. I pulled over and had the car towed to the dealer. They performed an engine diagnosis and removed the oil pan to find a lot of metal flakes. I was advised not to drive the vehicle (engine would likely seize) and informed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle only has 85,000 miles on it, and the repair quotes are $6,500-8,500, which is almost what the vehicle was worth before the engine failure. Neither the manufacturer or the dealer would provide financial assistance towards repair due to me being the second owner. Since taking ownership at approximately 70,000 miles I have had every recommended maintenance performed by the dealer. No indication was ever given to me about there being metal in the oil pan or any potential problem arising. I have since found out that these engines have a high failure rate, and the manufacturer fights tooth-and-nail to avoid acknowledging a problem or assisting with repair costs for second owners -- even if well under the 100,000-mile power train warranty provided to original owners.

15 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/20/2019

My 2012 Hyundai Elantra started making a ticking/ knocking noise in the engine. I googled the problem and found that many people were having the same issue. It was a missed step when building the engine. The noise is called piston slap. It's happening to a lot of Hyundai's from 2011-2016 Elantra and sonatas. Hyundai didn't do a recall because they don't want to foot the cost of replacing the engines. I took my car to Hyundai of south brunswick NJ on 7/3/19 no one called me until 7/9/19 I called everyday 3-4 times a day and kept being transfered to leave voice mails, I left messages and no one called me back. On 7/9/19 I was called and told it would cost me 6,766. 00 to replace my engine. I believe Hyundai should be responsible for the engine when they're aware of this issue and have not done a recall. The problem happened just starting the car one morning and the noise got louder each day.

16 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2016 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 04/15/2019

I am told I need to have my engine replaced. My car had been making ticking and knocking noises as if it was struggling to function. The day it broke down, it was beginning to knock exceptionally loud. I was afraid it was going to stall while driving as the car would not accelerate when I pushed on the gas pedal. It stalled again at the next intersection. Then would not start at all. I had to ask for help to push my car to a safe area. This happened on a city streets. I had the car towed to the Hyundai dealership believing it was covered under warranty. I was told I needed a new engine at a cost of about $8,000. If I replace the engine with the same engine, who's to say this won't happen again? I bought the Hyundai because of the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty knowing I'd be putting on the miles for work. I don't expect engine failure at the 78,800 miles (I bought it used from enterprise car sales with 18,000 miles on it). The selling point was the 10 year/100,000 mile warranty that I expected to have. I learned it does not pass to the second owner. Why not? how does the driver change the apparently defective manufacturing of the engine?! as I pressed on with the Hyundai representative, he told me (after consulting with his supervisor) it is only covered for a second owner if it was a certified pre-owned vehicle. I said it was cpo and that is how enterprise marketed their vehicles. Hyundai then said the ownership for the warranty is under alamo/enterprise, not me. News to me, but, again, why does it matter if the engine is defective? these "nu" engines have already been established to be defective. What engine bites the dust at 78,800 miles? my car was serviced regularly although not by the dealership. The representative then proceeded to tell me the warranty would be invalid anyway if it was not serviced by Hyundai.

17 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 03/04/2019

The vehicle has a strange sound when started up in the mornings. Almost like a ticking or small knocking sound. When I put my car in reverse to back up it starts to jerk like it's about to shut off. Also that same jerking occurs while driving on the highway. When my car is at the speed 35 it starts to jerk like it's about to shut off too. It happens all day long between the speeds 35 to 65. When I turn on the ac my car makes a weird squeaking nose and also jerks like it's about to give out again. I have had all my fluids check and everything is just fine. I dont feel safe in my car. It started happening the same day I got my vehicle from a small used car lot on March 4th 2019. It's been happening since the day I have left. I called the guy who sold my the car and he told me t was probably the gas being bad since the car sit so long on the lot. But it has never stopped.

18 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/09/2019

I have 2012 Hyundai Elantra GLS with 1. 8 l dohc engine. When cold started, the engine produces ticking/knocking noise which quiets down after running for 15 minutes. But, I observed that it is getting louder and louder and the noise is also not getting reduced as it used to be. I went to northtown Hyundai and they found metal shavings in the oil pan. Hyundai refused to replace the engine for free even though they very well know that it is a manufacturing defect due to bad piston coating. The engine power has highly reduced and I am afraid that it might blow in the middle of the highway. I have attached the Hyundai canada bulletin where they acknowledge the manufacturing problem. But, Hyundai USA is not doing anything with this problem.

19 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/15/2019

Rattling/knocking noise while car is running, increase in noise as you accelerate.

20 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/01/2019

Engine making ticking & knocking sounds.

21 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/30/2018

I had my car for a year. When I first got my car , there was a knocking noise that came from the engine , I took it back to carmax to fix and they stated they did. My car ran good for a while and around August or September after leaving from work that same noise started again. This time it was bad and I almost got into a wreck. I took it to a mechanic they stated that I needed my engine replaced. I have seen that this is a ongoing issue with these models. I also show that there is a recall on my vehicle and my car is showing those exact signs. I have documentation of information from the mechanic and the cost of the labor and new engine.

22 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 07/11/2018

A knocking noise from the engine that increases in frequency as the engine rpm increases. Reduced power and/or hesitation and vibration. In motion the knocking comes from the engine and when stopped it hesitation and vibrate.

23 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 06/24/2018

My car started developing a ticking/knocking noise from the engine at startup- specially cold startup. The noise seems to go away after the engine is sufficiently warmed up- like driving 5-6 minutes on cold days and a minute on warm ones. Recently, I have started experiencing shudders in the drivetrain-- these feel like sudden motions, like the engine is trying to stall. Went to the dealer, and he said everything is alright, although my local mechanic says that this sounds similar to several other complaints he has received from his other customers. Their seem to be thousands of affected Hyundai Elantra customers who are complaining of the same issue only to be ignored willingly by the dealers and the manufacturer. My car started developing these noises around 80,000 miles- and Hyundai offers a 100,000 mile drivetrain warranty. Does not seem like Hyundai is honoring its warranties at this point. Hyundai America seems to be testing the strategy where most of the affected customers will run out of warranties or will sell their cars for second hand owners to discover that the original 100,000 mile warranty doesn't apply to them anymore. Hyundai should issue a recall on my model year and affected model year vehicles that are affected by this issue. There is a potential safety concern of engine failure at highway speeds where the occupants of the vehicle may get involved in a fatal incident.

24 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/06/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2013 Hyundai Elantra. While driving at an undisclosed speed, there was an abnormal knocking sound in the engine. The vehicle was taken to wilkins Hyundai (750 n york rd, elmhurst, IL 60126, (630) 279-3000) where it was diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired due to the engines being on backorder. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 64,999. The VIN was not available.

25 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 02/01/2018

My steering is loose and the wheel clunks and rattles. Sometimes it feels like the steering wheel will come right off. I can hit the slightest bump and it will rattle and shake like I ran over a huge pot hole. Also, when I'm driving the car will suddenly slow down and whine like I hit the brakes even when I didn't. I was almost rear-ended when I hit the gas but the car decided it wanted to suddenly slow down a few seconds later. There is something terribly wrong here. The engine is also making a ticking/knocking noise when warming up. This happens daily.

26 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/20/2018

When the weather got cold the engine started making a knocking noise. Took it to the mechanic and he said the block would need to be replaced and to contact Hyundai since this seems to be a common problem with the 2012 Elantra. Fyi: the check engine light never has come on for this problem.

27 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 09/10/2017

While driving city or highway there is a loud knocking sound and as you accelerate it gets faster and louder. My car has been at Hyundai in valley stream, NY for 4 days with no conclusion.

28 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2012 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 08/22/2017

I have an issue with a 2012 Hyundai Elantra. It currently has 84,585 miles and I purchased it used from a dealership at 48,484 miles. It was inspected by a Hyundai service department in August of this year after making a knocking noise and stalling continually. It was diagnosed by the Hyundai service department with the same exact issue the sonata has which is covered in the class action suit, but our dealers request for a new short block was denied by Hyundai. There are metal shavings in the oil valve, and also in the oil pan caused by shearing from the crankshaft. There appear to be others with the same crankshaft issue that own Elantra models as well. Please see above attachments. My concern is that the same faulty deburring process that was used on the sonata's crank shaft may have also been used on certain Elantra's during the same timeframe. I also have receipts of all of my oil changes. If there is any information that is public knowledge about this deburring process that might have been used on other engine models or if you have any suggestions on how to proceed, I would appreciate it.

29 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 121,000.

30 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/14/2017

At 60k miles, a knocking sound came from the engine after rough idling. The engine oil now has metal shavings. Dealership denied that there have ever been problems. Never missed an oil change. Trying to get dealer to cover under warranty.

31 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 01/01/2017

While running in park, idling in drive, or driving less than 30mph the engine makes a ticking/knocking noise. The noise could still be there after 30mph but I can't hear it over the motor and road noise. Hyundai and kia recently recalled 1. 4 million cars for this exact reason for engine failure. But for some reason this model/year is not included. Researching online, you can see that many people have had to replace the engine despite being only a few years old with low miles. My vehicle is a 2011 with 70,000 miles.

32 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2013 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/25/2015

My 2013 Elantra's engine recently stalled and now needs to be replaced, and the underlying problem as explained to me by the Hyundai service dept. Sounds extremely similar to the problems that led to the recent sonata recall. Here's what happened: I was sitting at a stoplight when I heard a strange clicking/knocking noise from the engine. The vehicle began to have a very rough idle, shaking noticeably. The engine then stalled. After about 30 seconds of trying, I was able to start the engine again but still experienced a very rough idle and the check engine light had turned on. I took it to the Hyundai dealership. After the service department had looked at my car, they told me the engine needed to be replaced and that they were going to file a warranty claim. I was told that the engine bearings had failed, and that when they don't work properly to reduce friction in the engine, metal shards can get into the engine and cause problems. As I understand it from reading about the recent class-action against Hyundai, this sounds virtually identical to the problems with the sonata engines that ultimately led to the recall. I am still waiting to hear about the warranty (I'm still under the full 5 year/60k miles cpo warranty), but wanted to report this issue since what I've been told is so similar to the issues with the sonata engines. If the warranty claim is denied, I plan to request documentation of the problems with the vehicle and will be happy to provide them to NHTSA.

33 Engine Knocking Noise problem of the 2011 Hyundai Elantra

Failure Date: 11/22/2015

The engine has been making a knocking noise but no one could find a problem. Car cut off a few times while driving in stop and go trafic the check engine light came on and the code stated problem with crankshaft. Went to start the car a couple of days later. Car would not start horrible knocking noise came from engine. Car turned over but would not start. Mechanic had to replace crankshaft sensor, timing chain, crankshaft problems. Have had car back a little over a month now the engine is making the same noise again and the check engine light has come back on. Have read the engine recall for the Hyundai sonatas and sounds very similar to what my car is doing. The car has 115,000 miles on it and problems started around the 113-114,000 mark right after the warrenty had expired. .
